De 6e editie van het Upcoming Glory gala werd 23-01-2010 gehouden in Sportstudio H&A te Deventer. Het gala bestond voornamelijk uit Shooto C+ partijen van 2x3 minuten. Bij deze regels is staand nagenoeg alles toegestaan, maar op de grond mag er niet gestoten worden en gelden de Shooto grappling regels. Verder waren er nog een aantal thaiboks partijen en een nieuwe variant het op het Shootfighting genaamd Striking.

Aangekomen bij Sportstudio H&A van Akdeniz was de ring al meteen zichtbaar. Het was dan ook duidelijk dat het een sfeervol gala zou worden met iedereen zo dicht op de ring. Het had ook meer de sfeer van clubkampioenschappen ware het niet dat er toch een professionele organisatie aan het gala had gewerkt. In slechts 3,5 uur werden 17 partijen inclusief pauze afgewerkt. En alsof dat nog niet indrukwekkend genoeg is werden ook Marloes Coenen en Dion Staring nog even in het zonnetje gezet naar aanleiding van hun komende partijen op 30 januari.

Zoals altijd ging het er weer lekker fanatiek aan toe. Er waren een aantal mooie submissions te zien en de KO van de avond kwam op naam van Egbert van Tatsujin Amsterdam. Een indrukwekkende verschijning die zijn tegenstander met een mooie rechterhoek voortijdig het canvas liet opzoeken. Om het geheel een internationaal tintje te geven was er een team van Per Eklund gekomen voor een soort mini interland. Deze wisten de Zweden overtuigend met 4-1 te winnen dus de trip was niet voor niets geweest.

Volgens de ringspeaker waren we ook nog getuige van een unieke gebeurtenis in de vechtsportwereld. Een hele nieuwe discipline werd ons getoond: Striking. Tonie Michielsen en Fatih Altenay mochten dit thaiboksen met kleine handschoenen en worpen als eerste uitproberen. Lang duurde het niet, want Michielsen wist al snel zijn tegenstander 2 keer aan te slaan in de 1e ronde waarna de scheids de partij moest stoppen. Dan maar kijken hoe het Vincent Latoel en Normen Juaquin vergaat. Van tevoren werd druk gespeculeerd of Latoel niet te ervaren was voor de C-klasse kickbokser Juaquin. Dit bleek totaal onterecht aangezien Juaquin erg rustig en doordacht vocht. Totaal niet onder de indruk van Latoel pakte hij staande zijn punten. Latoel was hier niet van gediend en maakte keer op keer de takedown. Dit zorgde wel voor een punten voorsprong, maar hij raakte er ook erg vermoeid van. In de 3e ronde loopt hij zelfs op een stoot waardoor hij flink last van zijn neus krijgt. Deze lijkt gebroken gezien het bloed wat eruit blijft lopen. De dokter kijkt er een paar keer naar en moet de partij dan stoppen waardoor we een verrassende winnaar krijgen van dit gevecht.

Om 19.30 uur konden we dus weer huiswaarts met in het achterhoofd een leuk en sportief gala. Ook de prijs was prettig. Ik was niet officieel als reporter, maar met mijn riante reporter salaris was die 15 euro goed te doen. Dank gaat uit naar Glory voor het soepele verloop, de vechters voor hun inzet, sportstudio H&A voor het bier en het publiek voor het sportieve aanmoedigen.

Ik wilde bijna zeggen tot volgende keer, maar aan het eind hoorde ik dat Upcoming Glory 7 op 13 maart zou zijn. Dat zou ik persoonlijk niet handig vinden aangezien ook Grappling Ede die dag wordt gehouden en je dan toch in elkaars vaarwater zit. Als we op beide evenementen een leuk deelnemersveld willen hebben zou het mooi zijn als het op een andere dag is....
