Mousasi Leaves M-1 Global:
"After careful consideration, I have decided that it is in my best interest to part ways with M-1 Global," Mousasi wrote in the e-mail. "During the time I spent under their wing, M-1 Global, as a promoter and management company, allowed me to achieve many great things. I appreciate all they have done for me."
"My management is being taken care of by someone close to me," he wrote.
Mousasi recently returned following a two-week trip to the U.S. to train with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. He said he would like to come back to the states to train with Strikeforce lightweight contender Josh Thomson and his American Kickboxing Academy team in San Jose, Calif.

Ik zeg UFC here comes Mousasi

Sorry American Kick box academy but also not sure yet..
Mousasi recently returned to his native Holland following a two-week trip to the U.S. to train with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Georges-St.-Pierre-3500). He said he would like to come back to the states to train with Strikeforce lightweight contender Josh Thomson (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Josh-Thomson-2394) and his American Kickboxing Academy team in San Jose, Calif., after he hit it off with Thomson in Miami, Fla., for Strikeforce’s Jan. 30 event at the BankAtlantic Center.

Sherdog (http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Mousasi-Leaves-M-1-Global-22601) reported this morning that Stikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi has parted ways with management company M-1 Global

Mousasi, who won the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in August, said he has a fight contract directly with the U.S.-based promotion and will continue to compete for it. Mousasi said he also still plans to enter the first round of Dream’s light heavyweight grand prix, rumored to begin this May in Japan

It's always news when a top fighter leaves his management company, but this one might have more significance than most business-side shakeups. There are two reasons that this matters:

M-1 Global also represents (and it part-owned by) the world's #1 heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko
Mousasi is not only one of the fastest-rising stars of the sport, he was the only other significant fighter represented by M-1 Global.
For the moment it appears that this move will have little noticeable difference for MMA fans as Mousasi will still fight for DREAM and Strikeforce. But the longer term implications are very interesting. Mousasi controversially claimed that he had been offered a contract by the UFC last year but M-1 hadn't informed him of the offer. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva later denied it (http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/8/6/980383/joe-silva-talks-gegard-mousasis). Here's what our Brent Brookhouse had to say at the time:

M-1 lied to Mousasi to get him to sign a deal they wanted him to sign. They looked out for their own interests instead of his. They violated their duty to the client. The fact that Joe said they didn't make an offer is actually worse. It means that rather than lying about the numbers offered they cut off any potential negotiations by claiming a poor offer was made before the UFC had a chance to establish a starting point for negotiations.

Here's what M-1 boss Vadim Finkelstein had to say in an interview last year with K-1 Legend (http://k1legend.wordpress.com/2009/10/13/k-1-legend-interviews-m-1-globals-vadim-finkelstein/) (now Head Kick Legend (http://www.headkicklegend.com/)) :

K-1 LEGEND: While I understand this has more to do with Apy than it does you, what exactly happened with Gegard Mousasi and why did he believe he was offered a contract by the UFC? There are many conflicting stories and it’d be nice to have something to put the rumors to rest with.
Vadim Finkelstein: Well, I believe the UFC has never made an official offer. Moreover, it was simply impossible. By that time the deal with Strikeforce was successfully signed after 3-4 months of negotiations.

For me personally, Mousasi's break with M-1 Global raises the hope that Fedor Emelianenko himself will reconsider his relationships with them at the end of his current two fight deal with them.
Mousasi is his own man, and has said in the past (http://www.fighters.com/08/20/strikeforce-champ-gegard-mousasi-fedor-emelianenko-is-not-my-mentor-but-i-look-up-to-him?submit_foot=set) that he's not especially close to Fedor. But fans can hope this is the first crack in the wall that has been keeping the world's #1 heavyweight out of the world's #1 promotion

Gegard Mousasi (28-2-1 MMA, 2-0 SF) is keeping with a personal credo to mind his own business.

The 24-year-old Strikeforce light heavyweight champion recently parted ways with M-1 Global, the promotional and management company that assisted his rise to prominence in the mixed martial arts world. The departure was first reported Friday by Sherdog.com.

Mousasi's longtime manager, Apy Echteld, on Friday told MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/)

Echteld, who spoke via telephone from Amsterdam, declined to name the executive who had rejected the offer. Echteld also said he was the only party holding a management agreement with Mousasi.

"Basically, what M-1 could provide for him was not what Gegard and me had in mind," Echteld said.

A separate source with knowledge of the situation said Sergei Matvienko – son of the mayor of St. Petersburg, Russia, and a major M-1 backer – may have been the executive who turned away the proposed deal.

Although Echteld praised M-1 Global's efforts in getting Mousasi exposure stateside, he said the decision to move on was based on a desire to move the fighter's career to the "next level."

"It's not that difficult," Echteld said. "The input of the marriage was like this: we wanted to make Gegard famous as soon as possible in the U.S. I think the co-branding with Fedor did well."

Echteld said he would continue to work with M-1 Global as a talent scout and manager in addition to his work with Mousasi. He said the management team would be "extended" in the near future, but he declined to say who would join.

Mousasi, who is ranked among the top ten light heavyweights in the world by several media outlets, made his U.S. debut this past August at "Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" and took just one minute to defeat Renato "Babalu" Sobral for the promotion's 205-pound belt.

Mousasi fought alongside Emelianenko three months later when he defeated Rameau Thierry Sokodjou in a non-title fight for the promotion's network television debut, "Strikeforce and M-1 Global present Fedor vs. Rogers," on CBS.

In a January interview with MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/news/17715/with-planned-retirement-at-30-gegard-mousasi-searching-for-best-career-options.mma), Mousasi said he is a free agent after the August and November fights and was looking for the best career options.

However, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation said Mousasi signed a long-term contract that could tie him to the San Jose, Calif.-based promotion for as many as seven fights.

Recently, Mousasi participated in a training camp with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, where he hoped to bolster his wrestling and takedown skills. He is currently in Holland training with K-1 legend Peter Aerts.

There is still no exact date for Mousasi's next Strikeforce fight, a light heavyweight showdown with up-and-comer Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal that has been tentatively planned for April on CBS. (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) that the decision to leave was made when an M-1 executive elected not to sign a long-term management proposal that would have given the Dutch-Armenian fighter "lifetime security" – a deal similar to one held by Fedor Emelianenko.

Breaking down Mousasi’s M-1 split

In a surprising piece of news that largely flew under the radar of Vitor Belfort’s shock-withdrawal from UFC 112, Gegard Mousasi announced this week that he has parted ways with promotional/management company M-1 Global. What does this mean for Mousasi? How does it affect Strikeforce? And could Fedor be next?
http://www.mmaspot.net/mmaspot/files/image/fighterprofiles/gegard_mousasi.jpg

As the news of Mousasi’s split from the Russian/Dutch conglomerate broke late in the week, there were two immediate overriding reactions across MMA fandom. Firstly, that Mousasi should turn tail and run for the greener pastures of the UFC and secondly, that the situation would open the doors for stablemate Fedor Emelianenko to follow suit. Sure, in a perfect world we’d have Fedor vs Lesnar headlining the next UFC, traffic wardens wouldn’t exist and my prom date wouldn’t have disappeared with another guy back in 2001. Unfortunately things aren’t always that simple; there are a million reasons Fedor/Lesnar won’t happen for a long time, traffic wardens aren’t going anywhere and in all honesty, that dude was a lot better looking, and less drunk, than I was.

First of all, there are a multitude of differences between Fedor and Mousasi’s deals with M-1 global. Emelianenko is a minority owner of the company, for starters. As such he’s tied to the company for as long as it exists, or at least until he sells up. The other unique part of their relationship is that Fedor’s fight contract is owned by M-1; he is simply ‘loaned’ to Strikeforce and other promotions on short-term deals. A good analogy for soccer fans would be Carlos Tevez’s situation up until last year; he was ‘owned’ by a consortium and loaned to clubs like West Ham and Manchester United. People often ask why Fedor doesn’t just sack his management and head for the UFC…it’s the same reason that Randy Couture couldn’t just sack the UFC and head for Affliction: they owned his fight contract.

Mousasi’s relationship with M-1 was entirely different. The Dutch-Armenian was discovered and managed by M-1 Global’s chief talent scout and Dutch fight promoter/manager Apy Echtheld. He was brought into the M-1 fold so that he could be promoted alongside Fedor – the end game was to piggyback Mousasi off Emelianenko’s US appearances and create another star; a plan that seemed to be working just fine, with interest in Gegard at an all-time high.

While M-1 never had the same investment in Mousasi as they did with their prized Russian heavyweight, they certainly had a vested interest in his success. Despite running the M-1 challenge series, they have only three fighters in long-term management deals with M-1 itself (the third being 11-2-1 middleweight Karl Amoussou); Mousasi was a valuable extra piece in the complex game of promotional chess that the Russians were playing, which is why it came as such a shock when the Strikeforce middleweight champion pulled the plug.

The official word was that an unnamed M-1 executive, thought to be Sergei Matvienko (one of the key financial backers of the group), refused to guarantee Mousasi the same ‘lifetime’ deal that they have with Fedor – a move that would most likely have resulted in Mousasi also becoming a part owner of the group. His decision is thought to be based on poor financial returns from M-1 Global’s ‘M-1 Challenge’ series and their deal with Strikeforce, according to reports from MMAJunkie.

As is often the case though, things aren’t always as simple as they seem. Ever since he originally signed his Strikeforce deal last year, there has been growing friction between Mousasi and M-1. It dates back to the collapse of Affliction, when the UFC and Strikeforce were negotiating for the services of the newly freed-up fighters. The story goes that Echtheld, on behalf of M-1, told Mousasi that the UFC had offered him only $40,000 per fight (with an equal win bonus) and that he should accept Strikeforce’s marginally better offer. Despite the fact that the deal offered by the California promotion was less than half of his guaranteed purse of $125,000 from Affliction, Mousasi accepted the deal as he trusted Echtheld, who had discovered him at the age of 15 and been with him ever since.

The tale then took a sinister twist; Mousasi heard from other fighters that the UFC was offering to match Affliction fighters’ contracts. Without his manager’s knowledge, Mousasi called UFC matchmaker Joe Silva who informed him that the UFC had not made any offer of $40k/$40k; negotiations had been cut off before they could table a deal. He confirmed that Zuffa would have matched Gegard’s Affliction contract. This means that not only was Mousasi lied to by his management, but that M-1 acted completely selfishly in cutting off the UFC’s advances in order to secure their position with Strikeforce and CBS.

Apy Echtheld has confirmed that he still has a management relationship with Mousasi, but it seems that their once-strong relationship is now shaky at best. When the news of Mousasi’s phonecall to Joe Silva broke, Echtheld told the press that Mousasi was on a conference call during negotiations with the UFC, something the fighter and promoter have both strenuously denied. M-1 later refused to comment on the situation, with Wadim Finklechtien directing people to “…talk to Apy”.
To those familiar with Echtheld’s history, it’s no great surprise. He was the ‘mastermind’ behind Bushido Europe (http://www.bushido-europe.com/): an attempted co-promotion with Pride in Holland. The initial card featured K-1 and Pride fighters Ernesto Hoost, Valentijn Overeem, Igor Vovchanchyn and Gilbert Yvel…all of whom mysteriously pulled out in the week leading up to the event. Mark Coleman, Aleksander Emelianenko and Kevin Randleman still appeared, but Pride pulled their backing. The main event advertised Fedor against Dutch icon Bob Schrijber – despite the fact that the Russian was out of action with a broken hand, sustained in his legendary fight with Cro Cop just weeks previously.
http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/2009/mma/11/09/gegard.mousasi/gegard-mousasi2.jpg

Still, Echtheld continued to confirm the fight as far as the day of the weigh-ins, even though Fedor didn’t show up and Schrijber didn’t weigh in. Fans in Holland tried to warn those travelling from Europe to see Fedor; many posted on the event’s forum that he could not possibly compete due to his injury. They were branded liars and, bizarrely, threatened with legal action…I should know, I was one of them. The event was actually pretty good – Fedor’s only appearance was an in-ring apology (complete with a large cast on his hand) saying that he wasn’t cleared to compete.
So where does all of this leave Mousasi? Well, depending on who you believe he’s either a free agent, has one fight left on his deal or (most likely) is tied into a multi-fight commitment with Strikeforce and Dream that could see him participate in the Japanese promotion’s 205lb GP later this year. If the relationship with his management is indeed on rocky grounds, then America’s MMA management power-players will be circling over the immensely talented youngster in the coming months. One would assume that the UFC are still interested, provided Mousasi keeps winning. Having M-1 and Echtheld out of the picture certainly makes a deal for Gegard to compete in the world’s premier MMA promotion seem infinitely more plausible.

Fedor, still the jewel in M-1’s vastly diminishing crown, won’t be going anywhere for some time yet. With that said, should he see his former teammate, training partner and friend reaping the rewards of a healthy UFC contract and the fame and endorsements that come with it, it could very well start the ball rolling on ‘The Last Russian Emperor’ making his Octagon debut.

Mousasi, meanwhile, is staying quiet: seemingly content to follow his dream of being recognised as the world’s best fighter. He refuses to name names, bury his former employers or trash-talk his management: a rare show of class in what can so often be the murky business of contractual wheeling and dealing in the fight game.
