Following a successful debut in Australia this weekend, the UFC handed out $50,000 performance bonuses to the following lucky bastards:
Fight of the Night: George Sotiropoulos and Joe Stevenson, for their main-card three-rounder. Silva/Bisping might have been a closer battle, but Sotiropoulos gave the Sydney crowd what they paid for — 15 minutes of Aussie domination.
Knockout of the Night: Cain Velasquez, for his first-round smashing of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the headlining bout.
Submission of the Night: Chris Lytle, for scoring UFC 110's only sub, a kneebar of Brian Foster during the prelims. Amazingly, Lytle has won seven end-of-night bonuses in his last eight UFC appearances.
In other news...
— Michael Bisping wasn't too pleased with the way the scores played out in his fight against Wanderlei Silva. "It was a close fight, but personally, I thought I won rounds one and two," Bisping said during the post-fight press conference. "Congrats to him though...I'd love to have a rematch with Wanderlei."According to FightMetric, Silva edged out Bisping in the second round by a close margin. And of course, the Axe Murderer ended the third frame so strongly that it's hard to say that Bisping "won" the fight. Anybody think Bisping got screwed by the judges?
— Silva's next opponent will most likely be Yoshihiro Akiyama. Said Dana White: “Akiyama wants to fight Wanderlei very bad, it’s a big fight, and he wants this fight. We offered him [another] fight but he said wants Wanderlei." Silva and Akiyama were originally slated to face each other in Australia, but the UFC decided to give Bisping the nod instead. Akiyama hasn't fought since his Octagon debut, a split-decision win over Alan Belcher last July.
— Since Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic emerged from his beating of Anthony Perosh relatively unscathed, and Ben Rothwell should be over his stomach virus in the near future, Cro Cop and Rothwell will have their make-up fight sometime in the next few months.
— As promised, Cain Velasquez is on stand-by for a title shot if anything should happen to the winner of Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 111 next month. “Because of Brock’s absence, it’s a little plugged up right now in the heavyweight division, but this guy?” Dana White said. “In my opinion, Nogueira’s probably the best heavyweight of all time, and (Velasquez) absolutely demolished him tonight. He’s for real and he’s in the line right now.”
