Shocker: Holyfield-Botha a flop at the box office

Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review-Journal says that ticket sales for Saturday night's fight between Evander Holyfield and Francois Botha are dead. From his article:

Evander Holyfield shouldn't expect much company Saturday when he fights in Las Vegas for the first time in 6½ years.

Through Wednesday, fewer than 1,000 tickets had been sold for the fight between the 47-year-old former heavyweight champion and Frans Botha, 41, at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The last time Holyfield fought there, a crowd of more than 17,000 saw him lose a unanimous decision to Lennox Lewis. That was Nov. 13, 1999, with the undisputed world heavyweight title at stake. This time, despite $25 lower-bowl seats, there have been few takers to watch two past-their-prime heavyweights.

What this means is that with back-to-back 40something fights in Las Vegas, the public has loudly spoken and said, "No thank you." I'm sure they'll paper this up over 1,000, maybe even get another 1,000 in for free if they can find enough locals interested enough to spend their Saturday night in the Thomas & Mack Center, but it's clear what desire there is to see this fight. There's almost none.

Last weekend, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. put just 6,792 fans into Mandalay Bay, and both ESPN's Dan Rafael and Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole made it clear how bogus that number was in terms of how many people actually paid full price (or any price) to be in there. Rafael said that for almost all of the fight week festivities, he was the only real media in attendance. I wonder if there'll be any media for this one?

Those ordering the show will get this undercard:

Cruiserweights, 10 Rounds: Henry Namauu (5-3, 3 KO) v. Rayford Johnson (5-4, 3 KO)

Cruiserweights, 6 Rounds: Arthur Williams (46-16-1, 30 KO) v. Valente Tinajero (8-0, 4 KO)

And yes, that is 45-year-old "King" Arthur Williams, former titlist. Williams lost his last fight in October to a guy named Victor Barragan, who before that beat Namauu. Barrgan then lost a fight and is now 11-5 (3 KO), with one of his three stoppages being Williams.
