The longstanding question surrounding the Strikeforce heavyweight title has been when will Alistair Overeem finally return and defend the belt that he won in 2007? That question has been answered. The Dutchman will return on May 15 to defend against Brett Rogers.

If everything works out as planned, it sounds like he'll be sticking around Strikeforce for quite a while.

Busy over the last few years fighting primarily in Japan, competing in several K-1 kickboxing matches, Overeem has become a popular figure in the MMA community and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says it's never been an issue if he would return, but when.

"It's a timing issue," Coker said why it's been so long since Overeem fought in Strikeforce. "Because when we signed Alistair we knew he had a schedule (with) some fights with K-1, and last year we only had him until the fall and then he was going to fight in K-1 September, October, November, December. So it just worked out the way it worked out. Then he got hurt for us last year, so the fights didn’t happen. It just worked out the way it worked out."

Overeem fought just last weekend in K-1, knocking out Dzevad Poturak in the opening round of the latest edition of the K-1 World Grand Prix. Now that he’s turning his attention back to MMA, Coker is hopeful to show the U.S. audience what their heavyweight champion is all about.

"Now that we're scheduled, we're going to fight him. Hopefully you'll see Alistair fight every other month in Strikeforce, so we can help build the popularity of Alistair," said Coker. "Because this guy is an amazing, amazing athlete, great fighter, has a great history of fighting some of the best fighters."

The Strikeforce champion has never been one to hold his tongue on potential fights, and Coker believes he truly wants to face the best fighters in the world. Maybe even the best heavyweight the sport has ever seen.

"Here's a guy calling me saying I want to fight Fedor (Emelianenko). That doesn't happen too much where fighters are calling and saying I want to fight the best fighter in the world," Coker said.

The first challenge for Overeem, though, is Brett Rogers, who comes into the fight off of a loss to Fedor last year. Of course, the question came up immediately as to why Rogers would get a shot at the title coming off a loss?

Coker believes it was a smart choice based on Rogers' overall performance in the fight with Fedor.

"With Brett Rogers, we thought about it and said here's a guy that fought Fedor. Did he lose? Sure. But he fought a fight where it was at the point where I thought he was going to win that fight," said the Strikeforce head honcho. "I was sitting right there watching Fedor's head bounce up and down off that canvas and I said to myself 'oh my god, Brett Rogers is going to knock Fedor out.’ For a split second I thought that was going to be the outcome."

The match-up will prove the worthiness of both Overeem as champion and Rogers as challenger when they meet on May 15 in St. Louis.
