A 30-year-old MMA fighter has died from head injuries after making his professional debut Saturday in South Carolina, according to TV station WRDW (http://www.wrdw.com/sports/headlines/97325969.html).
Michael Kirkham, from Gaston, S.C. was pronounced dead this morning at Aiken Regional Medical Center. He was struck in the head several times during the bout, was unresponsive when transported and never regained consciousness before dying from a brain hemorrhage, according to WRDW.
Kirkham had fought six times in MMA events as an amateur. He was a lightweight who stood 6-9, and was nicknamed "Tree."
The event's promoter, Sam King, told MMAFighting.com that, "Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with his family, other than that I have no comment."
