Fabricio Werdum apparently will take an extended layoff this fall and winter.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) that the heavyweight fighter will be on the bench until January 2011. As a result, no opponent has been set for his return.
"The date is really to be determined because Fabricio is not going to fight until the beginning of next year, so he's going to be sidelined for the next five months," Coker said.
Werdum (14-4-1 MMA, 3-0 SF) said this past month that he intends to take the rest of 2010 off after undergoing a much-needed surgery on his elbow.
The fighter said he had repeatedly put the surgery off over a two-year period, and worried that it could affect future fights, he finally opted to get it done.
Manager Richard Wilner could not be reached to verify whether the elbow surgery prompted the layoff, though he recently told MMAFighting.com that Werdum might not need to go under the knife, and that if he did, the layoff would be brief.
Werdum scored the upset of the decade when he submitted Fedor Emelianenko in 69 seconds at "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum" back in June. It was his third consecutive victory since he signed with the promotion following a UFC release in late 2008.
Wilner said Werdum would be open to a rematch with Emelianenko or a fight with Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, whom he defeated under the now-defunct PRIDE banner in May 2006.
But for the time being, the Brazilian fighter is taking it easy. He recently celebrated his 33rd birthday and has conducted several training seminars around the world, where he has no doubt shown countless hopefuls the submission hold he used to turn the MMA world on its head.
