Struve vs McCorkle UFC 124

Two heavyweight up-and-comers are finalizing talks to meet at UFC 124 on Dec. 11 at the Bell Center in Montreal.

According to MMAjunkie.com, Stefan Struve and Sean McCorkle have verbally agreed to square off. Struve tweeted that his opponent should be announced within the next 10 days, though the 6'11” Dutchman did not specify that his upcoming fight would be at UFC 124. The bout has yet to be officially announced by the UFC.

Struve, 22, just signed a new four-fight contract with the UFC and holds a record of 4-2 in the promotion. “Skyscraper” most recently defeated Christian Morecraft by second-round knockout at UFC 117. His performance was impressive enough to win him “knockout of the night” honors. Struve also holds a “submission of the night” award, which came at the expense of Chase Gormley at UFC 104. His only losses in the organization have come to title contender Junior dos Santos and former IFL heavyweight champ Roy Nelson. Training with Team Schrijber in Holland, Struve holds the distinction of being the tallest man in the UFC.

McCorkle recently showed up on radar after a first-round submission stoppage of Pride veteran and former K-1 world grand prix champion Mark Hunt at UFC 119. Hailing from Indianapolis, “Big Sexy” used the home field advantage and locked up a straight armbar from top position, contorting Hunt's arm at an unnatural angle and forcing the tap out. Though he stands 6'7” tall, McCorkle will still be giving up four inches to Struve on fight night. Still undefeated in his five-year career, McCorkle fought mostly in Indianapolis' Legends of Fighting promotion before getting called up to the big show.

UFC 124 will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck. The bout will be a rematch of the pair's 2007 scrap, in which St. Pierre out-wrestled Koscheck en route to a unanimous decision victory. The two welterweights also opposed each other as coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter” season 12.

It seems everyday Sean "Big Bitch" McCorkle needs to fullfill his needs and talk smack about me. I am not going to spend a lot of time going back and forth with this person on the internet, but I am going to give you guys the opportunity to do so on my behalf.

Here is the deal, we are going to do a photo shop contest on who can expose McCorkle for the bitch that he really is. So make it as outrageous as you want. The winner of the contest will be announced the week of the fight and will get my fight gloves after I knock that Bitch out. I will make sure that there is plenty of Big Bitch blood on it. Sean if you want, you can compete too so you win something after you lose to me.

Is soooooo freaking badass. Last month I was given tickets10 rows up to watch Cain beat Brock at UFC 121, and tonight I sat cageside at UFC 123. In 3 weeks they will pay me a shitload of money to beat Stefan Struve in front of 20,000 people live, and millions watching on PPV.

Whether I get cut after losing(yeah right) or retire undefeated(most likely) I already am dreading the day it comes to an end. It's now so easy for me to understand why Chuck Liddell just can't walk away, and why Randy is still going in his mid 40s.

My buddy Jake O'Brien summed it up best when he told me there's nothing like fighting in the UFC. I said "you mean compared to fighting in other organizations?". And he said "No, I mean in the world"

UFC heavyweight prospect, Sean McCorkle has been speaking ahead of his UFC 124 showdown with Stefan Struve on December 11th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, explaining how his war of words across the internet boards have helped to promote this one more than anything.

Speaking via Heavy.com (http://www.heavy.com/mma/mma-interviews/2010/11/mccorkle-addresses-internet-fame-trash-talk-and-struve/), McCorkle said:

“I would like to be an internet sensation, but I think Kimbo Slice is already an internet sensation. So I probably need to come up with something new. I used to tell people I was famous, but it was off the internet, so it’s not like being really famous. If the internet were the real world, I’d be a top level celebrity.”

“Before I started actually seriously training and fighting in the UFC, probably an hour a day (I would spend online). Probably now, to be honest with you, no more than 30 minutes a day. And most of it’s done from my phone. I might be at the barber shop coming up with a new joke about Stefan Struve on the Underground or something like that. It’s kind of a hard legend to live up to at this point with as busy as I’ve gotten, but I’ll never forget my internet sensation roots.”


McCorkle then spoke about how he used a number of derogatory posts aimed at his UFC 124 opponent to bump their fight up to the main card of the evening, something that ended up working for him.

“It was part of my plan. My plan was, to be honest with you, was to get on the main card because the sponsorship money is drastically better. That was my plan and it was a little tough to get it going. I had to really push him (Struve) for a while, but he started coming back. It’s worked out pretty good. It’s a fight a lot of people want to see. I think it’ll be a good one, for me anyway. Probably not so much for him.”

“I think I’ve been pretty witty or funny about most of it without taking any personal shots at him. But he’s a tough guy, a really game guy. He showed a lot of heart in his fight against Christian Morecraft. I think he’ll go in there and scrap for sure.”

McCorkle impressed everyone in his octagon debut, taking down former PRIDE and K-1 veteran, Mark Hunt by pulling guard before slapping on a nasty looking kimura to force the submission. Things against the six-foot-eleven Struve may be a little more difficult as the man dubbed “Skyscraper” has a slick submission game all of his own.

The heavyweights have propped up UFC 124's co-main event by hitting the message boards to snipe at each other.

At 22 years old, Struve would seem a prime candidate for a war of keystrokes. And yes, he's had fun logging in and firing back at the noted keyboard warrior. But in the long run, he'd rather play Anderson Silva to McCorkle's Chael Sonnen.

You'd think Struve would welcome that. More eyeballs are good for your brand; they entice sponsors, and they sell merchandise. It helps the promotional machine along.

Plus, trash talk motivates. It's easier to fight a guy you don't like. There's nothing better than running a nasty phrase through your head to propel that last five minutes of sparring. But Struve's reasoning is much simpler.

McCorkle started it.

"Because he was talking all this [expletive], I was like, 'We can do something with it,'" he said. "But not too much because I don't want it to distract from training."

Struve said his life is plenty full without Internet trolling. He trains up to three times a day and does his best to eat clean and get as much recovery time as possible. He's trying to mirror a champion's lifestyle. Other stuff gets in the way.

"I'm really focused, and I don't want to get less focused because I have to put stuff on the Internet," he said. "I don't want to put my energy into that. All my energy goes into training."

McCorkle, on the other hand, appears to mirror Sonnen's outlook on a fighter's lifestyle. Namely, that fighters have plenty of time to do other things besides fighting. In this case, it's the time to wage an Internet jihad. (A future in politics seems unlikely for the Indianapolis resident.)

"He's doing it to get some attention," Struve said. "In my opinion, he's only in the UFC because he got attention for himself on the Internet. His fights weren't that impressive in my opinion."

Struve isn't buying the idea that stirring the pot will get him ahead.

"I don't think I can advance my career much by talking trash," he said. "I think I can advance my career by improving my skill set and being a better fighter.

"I'm 22, so I've got a lot of improvement to do – getting bigger, getting stronger and (improving) my ground game and standup. That's the way you become a champion – not by trash talking."

At best, the winner will take another step up the heavyweight ladder and put a new notch on the old career belt. But this is the last time Struve takes up a keyboard in anger – at least for now.

"I show respect for my opponents," he said. "I show respect for everybody who's in this business. So he didn't really have a reason to go that way. But whatever works for him, he can do that. I'm fine."

In the run up to UFC 124 Sean McCorkle has been doing his best Chael Sonnen impersonation going after Stefan Struve on twitter (http://twitter.com/bigsexymccorkle) with comments like:
"The only thing Stefan Struve has ever finished in his whole life is ‘another guy off'", "Stefan Struve likes black guys. Just sayin(g)" and "There's no way a dirty communist like Struve beats an American patriot like me. Freedom always wins, Struve. And these colors don't run!"

Apparently McCorkle believes that despicable homophobia wrapped in weird patriotism (the Netherlands isn't a communist ... but China is and we KNOW how much the UFC loves China! McCorkle, why do you hate America!?) is the best way to earn attention from UFC fans.

"They're not really annoying. I don't pay much attention to it. I've never had a guy trash talk so much before a fight. It's funny, but some of them are kinda 'you know.' I'm 22 and he's like 34 or 35? Maybe even older. (ed. note - he's 37) It should be the other way around. Come on, grow up man. I'm getting a little annoyed but I'll talk to him next week. I don't like him and I'll do my talking with him next week in the octagon. I promise the people in Montreal one hell of a fight."
