K-1 interview: Semmy Schilt

Interview with 4-time K-1 WGP champ and Finalist Semmy Schilt. His style might not be the most popular and continues to spark debates among fans, but there is no doubt that he is consistently the one to beat.

You may think his style lacks grace or that his fights are less than dynamic, but there isn't one fighter or fan who doesn't realize that Schilt is the most dangerous man in the WGP Final. He's continued to take on all comers and no matter how messy the battle, he's often the only one coming out smelling like a rose.

-- Tell us about the Final 16 Gerges fight.
Schilt: He put on the pressure, so I had to move around a lot.

-- Your leg looks damaged. Was it the low kicks?
Schilt: It started hurting two days after, but I felt nothing in the ring.

-- The judgement was 2-1 in your favor, but there were boos from the crowd.
Schilt: Maybe they didn't like the judgement? If you look at the fight closely, you'll see that I was the clear winner. The fans can boo if
they want.

-- Did you think it would go into an extra round?
Schilt: K-1 is a sport. There is always that chance. I thought I had won the first two rounds, so I felt that it was over. If it went to a draw, I probably would've been disappointed.

-- At last year's Final, you won with three first round KO's. It was harder this last fight.
Schilt: It's hard to fight every round with that level of energy. Sometimes I spread it across the whole fight.

-- Do you think you proved you are a worthy champ?
Schilt: Yes, I think I did.

-- Who can stop you?
Schilt: Who knows? We'll see in December.

-- K-1 fans will be curious to see who can beat you.
Schilt: Whatever! They can guess all they like.

-- Some say Alistair.
Schilt: I don't think so at all. But if I do fight him, I'll fight with all I have.

-- Who do you think is the strongest man in the world?
Schilt: Of course it's me. I'm the current champion. That shows you right there that I'm the world's strongest.

-- What makes the perfect K-1 champion?
Schilt: A great fighter, and a great person. Someone like me, right?

-- What's more important, winning or giving the fans a good show?
Schilt: It's a sport. A competition. If you enjoy it as a sport, you will enjoy the show as entertainment as well.

-- Does winning make you strong or does being strong make you a winner.
Schilt: In Holland we say, "If you're not strong, be smart". But I also fight with my head. That's how it is.
Kyotaro is hard to fight.

-- Do you have any weaknesses?
Schilt: Hehehe. Even if I did, I wouldn't tell you.

-- What do you hate?
Schilt: People who lie.

-- Are all fighters liars?
Schilt: Maybe. That's why I have to beat them (laughter).

-- You chose the second match in the drawing. Why?
Schilt: It's better to fight earlier.

-- What did you think when Alistair feinted?
Schilt: It would be a mistake to fight me. I invited him, but he ran away.

-- You face Kyotaro in the first match. Do you think you can win with no damage?
Schilt: Yes I do.

-- Do you have the advantage this time?
Schilt: I won't know until I fight.

-- Your impression of Kyotaro?
Schilt: He moves around a lot so he's hard to fight. He runs around so it's frustrating. Just like this interview (laughs).

-- We're almost done. How conscious are you that it could be your fifth win?
Schilt: My team is excited, but I just want to be this year's champion.

-- But it's never been done before.
Schilt: Of course that would be amazing.

-- How many times do you want to become champion?
Schilt: As long as I want to, I can become champ many times.

-- A message for the fans.
Schilt: On December 11th, I'll become this year's K-1 champion. Dont miss the moment I become the first five-time champion!
