Jammer dat Aldo is uitgevallen anders was het echt een goede card. En jammer dat Guida vs Gomi niet het co-main event is maarja Leben is altijd vermakelijk en die Stann is geloof ik ook een Amerikaanse war hero.

The Cut List: Who Desperately Needs a Win at UFC 125?

When we look at the UFC 125 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+125/) lineup, what we see is a host of fights that are painfully difficult to call. Of the 11 bouts slated for Saturday night, only three feature a fighter coming off a loss.

That's good news for those of us who are hoping to start 2011 off with a night of competitive fights, but it means that the Cut List is a short one this time around, featuring only three fighters who are teetering on the precipice of unemployment.

Who are they, and what do they need to do to keep their jobs in 2011? The answers await you below.

Brandon Vera (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Brandon+Vera/) (11-5, 8-4 UFC)
Who he's facing: Thiago Silva
Why he's in danger: Though you could argue that he got robbed against Randy Couture, the fact remains that Vera has lost two straight in the UFC, which puts him one defeat away from the dreaded three-fight skid. It's more than just numbers with him, though. At one time he appeared to be the next big thing in the UFC. He was young, well-rounded, and nearly unstoppable, or so people said. The problem came when Vera started listening to them. These days, Vera says, he's come back down to earth and is ready to re-earn that old reputation again. Against the hyper-aggressive Silva, he'll certainly get a chance to prove it. If he comes up short, it doesn't bode well for his immediate future.
Odds of getting cut: 4-1. This is a very winnable fight for Vera, but even in defeat he would have to look truly terrible for the UFC to risk putting him on the free-agent market. Unless he pulls a Kalib Starnes and backpedals for fifteen minutes, he'll most likely stay on the roster for now.

Marcus Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Marcus+Davis/) (17-7, 9-5 UFC)
Who he's facing: Jeremy Stephens
Why he's in danger: As much as the UFC loves his stand-and-bangedness (yeah, I made that term up just now), you still have to win some fights. Davis has lost three of his last four, and his one win in that period was over Jonathan Goulet, who was himself shown the door afterwards. Davis' ability and willingness to take a beating makes him valuable, but only to a point. Lately he looks older and slower every time we see him, and where once he was almost impossible to put away, these days it's happening with increased frequency. A move to lightweight could revitalize his career, or it could be another instance of the fighter's false friend. And it's not like the UFC is hurting for talent at lightweight right now.
Odds of getting cut: 2-1. Stephens is a tough kid who likes to brawl, but he's really only got one setting. Davis is probably a little more technical, even if he's lost some speed and power. If he can't win this one, he at least needs to put on a show as he goes down in flames. Fortunately, that skill is usually the last to go.

Phil Baroni (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Phil+Baroni/) (13-12, 3-6 UFC)
Who he's facing: Brad Tavares
Why he's in danger: I know, I know, he's the "best eva." He also hasn't beat a quality opponent since, what, 2006? That he's survived as a name fighter for so long is a testament to his all-out fighting style and his indefinable charisma. At times he may seem like the one guy every nightclub manager is hoping to keep out of his establishment (and away from his daughter), but he's still somehow very likable. Maybe it's because he's so forthright with his emotions, or maybe it's because we all have our own inner "Bad-Ass" that has to come out some time. I don't know. The point is, he's memorable and he's fun to watch. But for Pete's sake, he's got to win a fight here and there.
Odds of getting cut: Even. Tavares is a 2-1 favorite, and lately the only thing Baroni has done well in the cage is bleed. Still, maybe a training camp at AKA will help him turn things around against a relatively inexperienced opponent. Maybe.

UFC 125 Weigh-In Results

LAS VEGAS -- While you're getting ready to go out and stuff yourself with overpriced booze and cold appetizers, 22 fighters just finished starving themselves to make weight for UFC 125 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+125/).

In a match that will be contested for the UFC lightweight championship, Frankie Edgar (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Frankie+Edgar/) will face Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Gray+Maynard/). Both fighters had no problems making weight, coming in at the limit of 155 pounds.

"I'm going to walk away with a win and get revenge," Edgar said. "You can't beat it. I'm going to start the New Year off right."

When asked how he thought the fight would go down, Maynard was a man of few words, just as he's been all week.

"It's gonna go down with a win," he said before wishing the crowd assembled at MGM Grand Garden Arena a Happy New Year.

Middleweights Chris Leben and Brian Stann both took advantage of the extra pound afforded them in a non-title fight, both weighing 186 pounds for their co-main event. Leben is seeking a four-fight win streak while Stann would make a major step forward in his career by beating the respected veteran in his path.

The most animated weigh-in came between welterweights Nate Diaz (170) and Dong Hyun Kim (171), who got in each other's faces and exchanged words, which must have been an interesting moment between them since Kim speaks limited English. The two still shook hands afterward.

Lightweights Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi both checked in at 155 for their lightweight scrap.

UFC 125 Lightweight Title Breakdown: Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard

LAS VEGAS -- Fresh off two straight wins over a legend, Frankie Edgar (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Frankie+Edgar+/)and his confidence are both at an all-time high. Because of that, it's probably the perfect time to be facing the one man who has figured him out.

Thirty-three months ago, Edgar and Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Gray+Maynard/) faced off in Broomfield, Colo., with Maynard winning a unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout for Maynard 30-27, but it was much closer than the final scores indicated. Each of the first two rounds were very close, with Maynard out-landing Edgar 22-16 in the first, but Edgar out-landing Maynard 20-16 in the second. The third went decisively into Maynard's column with a series of takedowns, although Edgar actually out-landed Maynard in the round, 12-8.

All this time later, there's not a lot that we can project from that fight into Saturday night's UFC 125 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+125/) championship encounter.

Both fighters have improved significantly between then and now. Edgar (13-1) has made huge leaps with his striking, footwork and head movement, and Maynard (10-0, 1 no contest) has vastly improved his boxing and wrestling transitions.

But one thing will not be any different than the first fight, and that is the importance of the wrestling aspect of the match.

Edgar essentially lost the first fight because he couldn't stop the takedown. Final Compustrike stats (http://compustrike.com/comparison/edgar_maynard1.php) show that Maynard put Edgar on his back on eight of 10 attempts, a fact that far outweighed Edgar's 48-46 striking advantage in the eyes of the judges.

Edgar can't allow an encore performance at UFC 125. He admitted as much during the lead-up to the fight, but no one has of yet figured out a way to stop Maynard's takedowns. He doesn't get the credit that other takedown artists get, but Maynard has landed an astounding percentage of his tries, successful on 25 of his last 30 attempts (http://compustrike.com/comparison/maynard.php) (83 percent).

Despite Edgar's strong wrestling credentials as a collegiate All-American while at Clarion University, his takedown defense has been one of the few holes in his game. His last opponents have successfully landed 16 of 27 tries (59 percent). Even when you remove the stats from the Maynard fight from the mix, Edgar's still found himself on his back on 8 of 17 attempts.

As a result, he'll be working with a small margin for error against Maynard, who himself was also a collegiate All-American while at Michigan State. For both fighters, everything will hinge on who wins the fight within a fight.

If Edgar can keep things standing, he's shown a more varied striking game, particularly since beginning his work with muay thai coach Phil Nurse, as he's added many kicks into his attack. He has also become more comfortable with his footwork, head movement and distance, all elements that will help against a bigger opponent.

Maynard put things together well in his August No. 1 contender fight against Kenny Florian, routing Florian in a decision by out-landing him standing 19-12 and taking him down five times in six tries.

This seems like one of those matchups were styles might dictate the outcome, and Maynard may well be able to dictate the fight's location with his takedowns.

But I can't shake the feeling that Edgar has nearly always found a way to beat guys who were bigger or stronger, or both. Their first fight was essentially a toss-up into round three, when Maynard took over and closed strong.

But it's a forgotten fact that the event took place at elevation, and while Edgar declined to use that as an excuse, it seemed clear that he ran out of gas in the third, an event that hadn't happened before, and hasn't happened since.

If conditioning plays a role in this fight, it could swing the other way. Maynard has never before experienced the championship rounds, and a fourth and fifth could drain him after a big weight cut. Edgar by comparison cuts very little weight.

Edgar is the more technical fighter, while Maynard tends to live up to his "Bully" nickname with a physical style. There are plenty of reasons to think Maynard will do what he did in 2008, but I think a well-schooled Edgar stops enough takedowns to show his advantage in the striking department, and pulls off yet another upset to retain the lightweight championship in a decision victory.
