Dream/Strikeforce Lightweight Tournament in the works

http://prommanow.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/DREAM-strikeforce.jpg

Real Entertainment, the company that produces DREAM along with FEG, is looking to put together a lightweight grand prix that would feature fighters from the Strikeforce and DREAM roster, according to ESPN.com.

The tournament would not necessarily take place under the DREAM banner and would not involve the financially-troubled FEG, the report says.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told ESPN the following:

"We’re committed to keeping our fighters active, but if we can help Dream and have our fighters go over there and participate in their tournament, why not?"
While plenty of pieces would have to fall into place, Strikeforce did manage to put together a star-studded heavyweight tournament set to kick off on Feb. 12 in East Rutherfod, N.J., featuring Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva and Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov. Strikeforce and DREAM feature several big name lightweight competitors, including Gilbert Melendez, Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Josh Thomson, and Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante.

Shinya Aoki vs Takanori Gomi
Tatsurya Kawajiri vs Katsunori Kikuno

Gilbert Melendez vs Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante
Eddie Alvarez vs Josh Thomson

Dream co-producer Real Entertainment (ex-DSE staff) plans on forging ahead in the turbulent Japanese mixed martial arts promotion business with an eight-fighter lightweight tournament starting in May, sources tell ESPN.com.

The field would consist of Strikeforce (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/promotion/strikeforce) and Real Entertainment fighters.

"We're committed to keeping our fighters active, but if we can help Dream and have our fighters go over there and participate in their tournament, why not?" said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker.

Strikeforce could provide up to five fighters:

Gilbert Melendez (18-2) [Num. 3]
Josh Thomson (18-4) [Num. 18]
Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante (15-4-1) [Num. 22]

Lyle Beerbohm (15-0) [Num. 41]
Jorge Masvidal (20-6) [Num. 43]

Japan's Aoki, Kawajiri and Kikuno are also expected to participate:

Ben benieuwd of Dana deze keer wel reageert.
"Fucking joke. Fuck. This is fucking retarded as fuck."

waarom wil jij zo graag dana's reactie?
Omdat hij anders SF bij elke gelegenheid afkraakt. Maar hij is tot nu toe oncharacteristiek stil.

Dat sowieso.

Strikeforce Furthering Japanese Partnerships, Considering a Strikeforce Heavyweight GP Event in Japan?
DREAM and K-1 promoter Fighting and Entertainment Group are keeping us all anxiously waiting for news of their life or death, but the vultures are already swooping in.

In the same week that the UFC announced new distribution deals and plans to return to Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/01/25/zuffa-targeting-japanese-ufc-event-in-2011/), ESPN's Josh Gross reports (http://sports.espn.go.com/extra/mma/news/story?id=6066330) that Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Strikeforce/) CEO Scott Coker (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Scott+Coker/) is considering venues in the U.S., Canada, Brazil and also Japan for the second quarterfinal round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, to be held April 9.

Leading Japanese promoter DREAM (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/DREAM/) formed an alliance with Strikeforce in August 2009, but until now the agreement has been limited to fighter exchanges. The Japanese event is now having serious financial difficulties and DREAM co-promoter Real Entertainment, which consists of former Pride FC staff, is now considering furthering the alliance.

Scott Coker should be meeting with Real Entertainment's Sotaro Shinoda this Thursday to discuss the possibility of holding the second quarterfinal round of the heavyweight GP in Japan.

Gross also wrote on rumors (http://sports.espn.go.com/extra/mma/news/story?id=6066438) this week that Real Entertainment is planning on holding an eight-man lightweight tournament starting in May, possibly without the support of FEG and possibly partnered with Strikeforce.

TV ratings and internal politics indicate that DREAM would be the first event under the FEG promotional banner to fall unless co-promoter Real Entertainment takes the initiative and splits the partnership now. Although the proposed lightweight GP will most likely not be under the DREAM name, a coalition with Strikeforce seems like one of the few plausible ways for Real Entertainment staff to continue promoting fights at this point.

"We're committed to keeping our fighters active, but if we can help DREAM and have our fighters go over there and participate in their tournament, why not?" said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker to ESPN. "If things go the way they should, I feel confident we'll send a bunch of guys over."

While on the topic of Strikeforce, heavyweight Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Satoshi+Ishii/) is currently in negotiations (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/01/26/strikeforce-looking-to-sign-satoshi-ishii/) to fight in the American promotion as a light heavyweight. Koichiro Matsumoto (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Koichiro+Matsumoto/), Deep featherweight champion and Ishii's new best buddy, has been posting recently on his blog that Ishii will be fighting on the Feb. 12 show in New Jersey but that in fact will not happen. MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani has more (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/01/26/strikeforce-looking-to-sign-satoshi-ishii/).

Real Entertainment, a partner of Japan’s Dream events, and Strikeforce are working towards putting together an eight-man lightweight tournament starting in May that will involve fighters from both promotions.

The announcement surfaced on ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/extra/mma/news/story?id=6066438) on Thursday evening noting that participants could include Japanese fighters Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri and Katsunori Kikuno, with Strikeforce fighters making up the rest. Some of those fighters could include Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, KJ Noons, Lyle Beerbohm, Jorge Masvidal and Justin Wilcox.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The field would consist of Strikeforce and Real Entertainment fighters, possibly but not necessarily under the Dream banner, and likely without FEG, which has been its promotional partner since Pride Fighting Championships was purchased by Zuffa in 2007.

“We’re committed to keeping our fighters active, but if we can help Dream and have our fighters go over there and participate in their tournament, why not?” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, who confirmed ongoing discussions between his promotion and Real Entertainment for the May event. “If things go the way they should, I feel confident we’ll send a bunch of guys over.”
