Former UFC interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) meets promotional newcomer and grappling specialist Jon Olav Einemo (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 131.
UFC president Dana White today confirmed the booking during an online chat with "The Seattle Times (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/othersports/2014571609_webwhitechat22.html)."
UFC 131 is expected to take place June 11 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Brock Lesnar vs. Junior Dos Santos headlines the night's pay-per-view broadcast.
Carwin vs. Einemo is expected to be part of the PPV broadcast.
Carwin hasn't fought since UFC 116 in July 2010, when he suffered a second-round submission loss to then-champ Brock Lesnar. Carwin dominated the first round of the fight but admittedly slowed in the second, which gave Lesnar the opening he needed for the comeback win. Prior to the loss, Carwin, who recently pulled out of a UFC 125 booking to undergo back surgery, had posted a perfect 12-0 record with 12 first-round stoppages. The UFC victories came over Christian Wellisch, Neil Wain, Gabriel Gonzaga and Frank Mir.
Carwin had been expected to fight at UFC 131, possibly against Ben Rothwell. But with Rothwell facing an extended recovering from surgery, officials struggled to find a replacement.
Einemo, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, is a 35-year-old Norwegian who won the 2003 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship. He's fought in Shooto and PRIDE and owns six first-round stoppage victories (five via submission) in six career victories. His only loss came via decision to Fabricio Werdum at PRIDE 31.
Einemo hasn't fought professionally in four-and-a-half years.
