This past Thursday, the 7th of April, the Dutch city Enschede was the place-to-be for the Dutch fight sport scene. Mixfight reporter Bas Meelkop was present. Peter “The Lumberjack” Aerts stood proudly in front of the building that was soon to be officially his own brand new dojo. Shoulders held high and chin pointed straight forward he introduced his gym in front of the camera of FightstarTV, announcing it with all his accumulated pride.
Pride he so rightfully deserves. The forty year old kickboxing legend has seen it all. He has seen losses, he has seen struggles, but many a times he has also seen victory, and all the great emotions that come with it. Yesterday was another victory for this charismatic man.
More so than a victory, it also marks the shift in activities of the ‘Dutch Lumberjack’. This new dojo also means that he will be occupied with an extra major task. Aerts, when asked about the fact whether or not he will be laying down his career as fighter and continue as a coach, he promptly answered with slightly debunking the statement. “It all depends of the K-1 and where other opportunities lie.” Thus mentioning that, for now, he is neither excluding the fact that he will still be active, nor is he confirming it. One thing is confirmed though: Peter Aerts will do all in his power to ‘find new loggers to cut all that wood out there’.
When he was asked how he was going to manage his gym, he mentioned he would not only be spending time with a small specialized group of semi- and professional fighters, but that he would also be training the other classes of fighters. All aimed at trying to train fighters from the moment they first put on their gloves to, hopefully, standing in a ring in Japan with their hand raised and a crowd of twenty thousand cheering for them.
“There is definitely no lack of ambition”, I thought when he mentioned all of this. On top of that, he clearly mentioned his goal. “In a year or two from now, I hope to have at least one or two world class fighters.” He explained after the talk about the organization of his dojo. All that was left for me to say was wish him good luck.
The day of the opening was an enjoyable one, to say the least. With on the list of present people such as retired fighter Gerard Gordeau, world-class kick-boxer Andy Souwer and heavyweights Daniel Guita and Hesdy Gerges, the latter of which gave a kickbox seminar that day to a variety of future students of said gym.
The official opening was performed by Peter Aerts and his good friend Ali-B, who in the Netherlands is a renowned rapper. Cheerful emotions pretty much made up the whole day, with the sun showing its bright self every now and then to the guests attempting to bask in it and enjoy the day. The Lumberjack sure did.
Further interviews performed this day will be up soon, at FightstarTV.com!
