Op zaterdag 9 april vond er in Almelo iets memorabels plaats. NPU Undisputed heeft de octagon weer terug naar Nederland gebracht na zo'n 15 jaar afwezigheid. 1996 was het jaar waarin het eerste octagon gevecht plaatsvond, en dit was ook meteen de laatste. Het evenement wat plaatsvond in Emmen had zoveel commotie veroorzaakt dat het legaal verantwoord werd gezien toekomstige vergunning aanvragers te weigeren op grond van het gebruik van de octagon.

Anno 2011 is daar dus verandering in gekomen. Gemeente Almelo heeft aan de hand van een mondelinge overeenkomst, dat is wat ik althans gisteren begrepen heb, toestemming gegeven voor het gebruik van de octagon als gevechtsring. Overigens zou naar mijn mening de regering dit wetsartikel nog best wel eens mogen herzien. Hedendaagse partijen in de octagon zijn voorzien van veel meer reglementen dan in '96 het geval was. De eerste stap is inmiddels gezet.

Bij binnenkomst van de zaal was ik eerlijk gezegd een beetje verbaasd. Het eerste octagon-evenement in Nederland sinds 15 jaar had ik me iets flamboyanter voorgesteld, maar het beperkte budget was anders besteed. De grote hoeveelheid media en de lange lijst zichtbaar op de matchmaking maakte al snel duidelijk waaraan het budget besteed was.

Door een hoog aantal uitval van vechters bleef het uiteindelijke aantal partijen op 23 staan, en maakte iedereen zich klaar om te gaan genieten van deze avond. Omdat hier (http://www.mixfight.nl/forum/showthread.php?113090-Live-PbP-NPU-event-Almelo) en hier (http://www.mixfight.nl/forum/showthread.php?113133-Uitslagen-NPU-Undisputed-Octagon-Fights-9-april-2011-Almelo-Holland) elke partij al beschreven staat zal daar verder niet meer over ingegaan worden.

Wat wel nog even 'noteworthy' is, is mijn favoriete partij van de avond. Omdat er weinig publiek aanwezig was bleef het ook voor een groot deel van de avond relatief stil tijdens de gevechten. Het 21ste gevecht van de avond bracht daar echter verandering in. Henry Heinhuis tegen Olaf Cordemeyer was toch wel degelijk de 'Fight of the Night' hier. Al bij opkomst stond één derde van het VIP gedeelte met de handen in de lucht de longen uit het lijf te schreeuwen om hun favoriet Henry Heinhuis aan te moedigen. Het publiek in de tribune werd daardoor snel opgejut om hun favoriet Olaf Cordemeyer een hart onder de riem te steken.

Deze aanmoedigingen wierpen overduidelijk hun vruchten af, want beide heren vochten alsof hun leven ervan afhing. Een waar slugfest ontaardde zich in de kooi en werd werkelijk geen enkel terrein weggegeven. Elke vierkante centimeter van de octagon werd om gevochten en beiden wilde via winst door KO de kooi uitlopen. De partij eindigde uiteindelijk op een jury-beslissing. Hierbij besloot de jury op datgeen wat ik al vermoedde: winst Henry Heinhuis. Het publiek werd gek en Henry besloot zijn fans te bedanken door zichzelf op de ring te werpen en z'n fans te omarmen terwijl hij zijn balans hield op de balk.

Verder verslag laat ik over aan de twee mixfight fotografen die aanwezig waren, en aan FightstarTV die gedurende de week alle partijen online zal zetten. Hierbij presenteer ik dus alvast de meesterwerken van Ronald en Tov!

Hoogtepunt van de avond: geweldige zanger (Sam Cooke?) in de pauze van het programma (zie foto hieronder).

En uit deze foto blijkt dat sport verbroederd, zoals deze grote fora-meeting op 9 april ook door mij (on-?)bedoeld was.
Beter dan karten, paintballen of ezeltje-prikje. Haha.
