UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Chael+Sonnen/) on Wednesday lost his appeal against an indefinite suspension, leaving the 34-year-old contender's mixed martial arts future up in the air.

In a hearing in Los Angeles, the California athletic commission ruled 4-1 to uphold Sonnen's indefinite suspension, MMAJunkie.com reports (http://mmajunkie.com/news/23647/chael-sonnen.mma). While suspended, Sonnen is ineligible for a fighting license in California. The Nevada athletic commission adheres to the rulings in California.

Factored into the ruling were Sonnen's money laundering conviction in January and a false testimony last December.

In January, Sonnen avoided jail time with a guilty plea to one charge of money laundering (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/04/08/chael-sonnen-sentenced-to-probation-10-000-fine-in-laundering/) by agreeing to forfeit his real estate license and paying a $10,000 fine.

Last December, Sonnen told the commission that he had cleared the use of testosterone replacement therapy with Nevada athletic commission executive director Keith Kizer. However, Kizer said the conversation never took place. Last month on The MMA Hour, Sonnen admitted he used the "wrong words" in the testimony (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/04/11/chael-sonnen-breaks-silence-on-nsac-troubles-legal-woes-fighti/), stating it was information relayed to him by his manager, whom Sonnen has since relieved of his duties.

Sonnen last competed at UFC 117 in August in Oakland against champion Anderson Silva. Seemingly on his way to victory on points, he was submitted by a triangle choke three minutes and 10 seconds into the fifth and final round. Following the fight, he failed his drug test and was suspended for one year, later reduced to six months. Sonnen was then ready to make his return in March against Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128, but his UFC contract was frozen (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/01/04/ufc-suspends-chael-sonnen/) in order for Sonnen to "take some time off from his fight career to focus on the resolution of some personal issues."

During Wednesday's appeal hearing, Sonnen said if his suspension isn't lifted, he could not only be missing out on an opportunity to coach The Ultimate Fighter 14 opposite Michael Bisping, but his fighting career could be over.

"If I don't get my license today I'm effectively retired," Sonnen said, according to ESPN writer Josh Gross. "That came from the boss, Dana White."

CSAC Clarifies Ruling, Says Sonnen Won't Have to Wait a Year to Reapply

The California State Athletic Commission made a mistake with regards to Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Chael+Sonnen/)'s licensing status, and as a result the fighter might not have to sit out an entire year before he can reapply for a fighter's license in the Golden State, according to a report from ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/extra/mma/news/story?id=6572062).

CSAC executive officer George Dodd admitted the error to Josh Gross, saying he had misinterpreted the application of rule 399, which would have required Sonnen to wait a full year between licensing applications.

But since the commission had voted merely to uphold Sonnen's suspension rather than to revoke or deny his license, that rule does not apply, Dodd said.

"That's what we came up with," Dodd told ESPN. "That's why I needed to go out there with this and set the record straight that he can apply after June 29, after his license does expire, because that's the legal jurisdiction we have to the end.

"Rule 399 was treated as almost a revocation or denial, but you can't do that.

"I'm the one that put it out there and the error of putting it out there rests solely on me, but we're going to correct the situation as we should."

So what does it mean for Sonnen's fighting future? For one thing, he can reapply for a license when his current one expires on June 29, 2011.

Of course, there's no guarantee that the commission will grant him a license then, and if he is rejected at that time then he will have to wait a year before he can reapply.

As Dodd told MMA Fighting (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/05/19/csac-chael-sonnen-cant-reapply-for-license-until-may-2012/) last week, "rehabilitation" is one of the primary criteria the CSAC will judge Sonnen's future licensing applications on.

"[Sonnen] is going to have to show that he's done something to promote the sport, promote goodwill," Dodd said. "He does a lot of good things already. He talks to kids and stuff like that about making right decisions. But he's going to have to show that he's making the right decisions as well. You can say it, but you have to make those decisions yourself."

Dana White Says UFC Will Honor Chael Sonnen's Suspension No Matter What

LAS VEGAS – Dana White (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Dana+White/) may not like it, and he's been adamant in his belief Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Chael+Sonnen/) has been punished enough.

But the UFC boss said Saturday after UFC 130 that as long as the former middleweight title challenger remains under suspension by the California State Athletic Commission, he won't step foot inside the Octagon.

MMA Fighting asked White following the post-fight press conference if he would allow Sonnen to fight in a state that would grant him a license, despite the CSAC suspension, or overseas, where the UFC does its own self-regulation. And White said that won't happen, even though he knows there are states that would grant Sonnen a license and allow him to fight.

"We don't do that," White said of the possibility. "He's going to have to pay his dues and straighten his stuff out with (the CSAC), even though I think what's happened to him is wrong."

Sonnen's difficulties started after he dominated middleweight champion Anderson Silva deep into the fight before tapping to an armbar-triangle at UFC 117 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+117/) in Oakland, Calif., last August. After the fight, he failed his drug test, then ran into further trouble with the CSAC when his testimony was called into question for its accuracy. And further complicating things for Sonnen, he plead guilty to a money laundering charge stemming from a real estate deal.

That all added up to the CSAC extending his suspension from six months to indefinite. He won't be eligible to apply for a license in California until the end of June. And White thinks the CSAC has given his former top contender a raw deal.

"I think Chael has paid his dues," White said. "Can you keep a guy from making a living for having a big mouth? He's a big mouth. He says dumb (crap). He says stuff that doesn't make sense sometimes. He lives on his own little planet. I can tell you this: You go throughout the history of boxing and look at some of the guys that have been licensed in boxing and what they've done."

White was reminded that Strikeforce heavyweight Josh Barnett doesn't have a license in California and has long had difficulties in that state following a failed drug test in August 2009. Yet Barnett will fight in Strikeforce's heavyweight tournament in Texas in less than three weeks, a state that granted him a license despite his current ban in California. And since Zuffa owns Strikeforce now, along with the UFC, couldn't the same thing, theoretically, be done for Sonnen? Sure, White said. But it won't happen.

"We will honor it. We won't let him fight anywhere," White said. "We'll honor that suspension until it's cleared up. (The CSAC would) regulate me – they're my boss too. You show me a guy who fought the government and won. Show me that guy. I want to meet him. I don't want to be the guy to try. I do what I'm told."
