UFC 134 in Brazil sells out in 74 minutes (http://mmajunkie.com/news/24052/ufc-134-in-brazil-sells-out-in-74-minutes.mma)

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jun 19, 2011 at 1:00 pm ET
http://mmajunkie.com/dyn/images/fighters/anderson-silva-20.jpgUFC 134 officially is a heavily anticipated event.

Officials recently announced that the event, which is the UFC's first in Brazil in 13 years, sold out in just 74 minutes.

The event takes place Aug. 27 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and top contender Yushin Okami headline the pay-per-view show.

Tickets went on sale to the general public on Saturday. A pre-sale period for arena-VIP customers took place Thursday.

As MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) reported following a media event in Rio this past week, the event is expected to accommodate nearly 17,000 fans (http://mmajunkie.com/news/24019/ufc-134-ticket-pre-sale-begins-today-nearly-17000-seats-available.mma). UFC president Dana White expects it to be the first of multiple shows, including pay-per-view events and UFC Fight Night shows, to take place throughout the country in the next year.

To date the UFC has hosted just one show in Brazil: "UFC Ultimate Brazil" (UFC 17.5) in October 1998. That show took place in Sao Paulo.

The latest UFC 134 card now includes:

MAIN CARD

Champ Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami (for middleweight title)
Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub

David Mitchell vs. Paulo Thiago
Erick Silva vs. Mike Swick

Dana (White) stated earlier in the week at the UFC 134 press conference that 16,752 tickets would be available for the event, with prices ranging from R275 (170 USD) to R1600 (1000 USD). So it looks like Zuffa will make a pretty penny on the Rio gate.

23/06/11 - Gracie wants seven-figures for appearing at UFC 134

Royce Gracie has confirmed that he is looking for at least one million dollars to appear at UFC 134.

Gracie, who won three of the first four UFC tournaments and is one of the fathers of MMA, appeared on Brazilian show Sensei SporTV (http://sportv.globo.com/videos/sensei-sportv/v/sensei-sportv-especial-royce-gracie-18-de-junho/1540615/) this week to renew his calls for a spot on the UFC Rio card.

“Matt Hughes in the Octagon in Rio would be ideal. He’s the one I’m after,” Gracie said, hungry for a rematch of their UFC 60 meeting which ended in a first-round TKO win for Hughes. “In that fight with him I’d gone overboard in training. Dad [Helio Gracie] told me ‘That’s a mistake.’”

After the loss Gracie faced some criticism for not having moved with the times and having the same kind of game he had in the very first UFC event, some twelve years previously.

“I’ve been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 44 years. I always kept my mind open to other styles but just to know what I may be up against. I’m not going to learn wrestling to try and take down Matt Hughes,” he said, before outlining his belief that it is better to be deep in one art than shallow in many.

“If I go and train MMA, what does that mean? Training MMA is [for] Kimbo Slice. Can he stand and bang with a boxer? No. Can he put up a good fight on the ground? No. He’s a tough guy, but he’s not good. MMA isn’t a martial art [in itself]. You have to have somewhere you come from, you have to know an art.”

As for his hopes of appearing at UFC 134, there has been no word from the promotion on whether he will be invited to fight, although it doesn’t appear likely as the card is filling up rapidly. Gracie wants a slot badly - but wants top dollar as well.

“Dana White knows what I’m worth; he knows what I bring to the table. Yes, my fight purse has seven digits!” he confirmed with a laugh.

Dan Miller Agrees to Face Rousimar Palhares at UFC 134

Continuing a long trend of stepping into fights on short notice, Dan Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/miller/445/) has accepted a UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) bout with Rousimar Palhares (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rousimar/palhares/404/), after Palhares' original opponent Alexandre Ferreira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alexandre/ferreira/1670/) was removed from the bout for undisclosed reasons.

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) confirmed the change on Wednesday afternoon.

Miller is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Nate Marquardt (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nate/marquardt/372/) at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 128 in his home state of New Jersey. Marquardt had been expected to face Yoshihiro Akiyama (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yoshihiro/akiyama/914/) at the event, but Akiyama withdrew after an earthquake and tsunami devastated his home country of Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/). Miller stepped into that fight with just one week's notice.

Prior to that, Miller had won two straight fights, with a decision win over Joe Doerksen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/joe/doerksen/322/) and submission victory over John Salter (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/john/salter/1185/). The latter of those two fights was again a short-notice bout, with Miller replacing an injured Phil Baroni (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/baroni/267/).

Miller is 13-5 with 1 no decision in his pro career.

Palhares is attempting to win his second straight after defeating Dave Branch (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dave/branch/1540/) via submission in March. Palhares is 12-3 in his career, and has won four of his last five UFC bouts.

This is the second time a Palhares-Ferreira bout has been called off. The two had been expected to fight in March, but Ferreira pulled out six weeks before that, after floods in Brazil resulted in casualties to his friends and family.

UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) will be on Palhares' home turf, taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main event features a middleweight title match pitting champion Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) against challenger Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yushin/okami/479/).

Brazilians Raphael Assuncao and Johnny Eduardo Meet at UFC 134 in Rio

Veteran Brazilian fighter Johnny Eduardo (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JohnnyEduardo/) has signed with the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) and will make his debut with the promotion in his home country at UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) next month.

The company announced late Sunday on its UFC Brazil Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/#%21/ufc_brasil/status/92755752237801472) Eduardo has signed on for a bantamweight fight against Raphael Assuncao (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/RaphaelAssuncao/) in Rio de Janeiro.

Assuncao had been rumored for a fight against Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) and Dream vet Darren Uyenoyama (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/darren/uyenoyama/909/), but that fight never materialized. Instead, Eduardo (25-8) will make his promotional debut against a fellow Brazilian.

Eduardo will enter UFC 134 riding an 11-fight winning streak. His last loss came four years ago at a Shooto event in Brazil. Though most of his 33 career fights have been in his native Brazil, Eduardo does have one Stateside fight, a unanimous decision win over Donald Sanchez at Bellator (http://www.mmafighting.com/bellator/) 3. Nineteen of Eduardo's 25 career wins have been by stoppage.

After going 3-2 in the WEC, Assuncao (16-4, 0-1 UFC) made his UFC debut in March with a knockout loss to Erik Koch (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/erik/koch/1092/), who had taken the fight on a month's notice for an injured Manny Gamburyan. Assuncao has just one win since 2009 – a decision victory over LC Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lc/davis/1053/) at WEC 52 last November. The Atlanta-based Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt will be making his bantamweight debut, dropping down from featherweight.

UFC 134 will take place Aug. 27 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. It will be the promotion's first event in Brazil since UFC Ultimate Brazil in 1998. The pay-per-view card is headlined by a middleweight title fight between Brazil's Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) and the last man to beat him, Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/)'s Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yushin/okami/479/).

In addition, the main card features a light heavyweight bout between former champions Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Forrest Griffin and a heavyweight fight between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brendan Schaub. Of the 12 bouts on the card, 11 involve Brazilian fighters. All told, 13 Brazilians will are scheduled to compete at the event, a new high-water mark for a UFC show.

Knee Injury Halts Mike Swick's UFC 134 Comeback Fight

Mike Swick's return to the Octagon has again been put on hold.

The welterweight, who has been out of action since UFC 109 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC109/) in February 2010, has been forced out of UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) later this month with a knee injury. The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC/) made the announcement late Thursday, and Swick confirmed the news on his official Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/#!/officialswick/status/99336840095596544).

Swick's opponent, Erick Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/erick/silva/1820/), is awaiting a new opponent. The UFC said an announcement will be made soon for a new fight for the Brazilian, who is making his UFC debut.

Swick (14-4, 9-3 UFC) said on Twitter he suffered the injury while wrestling: "Yes rumors are true. I tore my knee today wrestling. Will get MRI results in am but Dr thinks torn MCL, ACL and possibly meniscus. Got my health and size back and was having best fight camp of my career then one small twist during training. Can't catch a break sometimes."

Swick has dropped two straight fights after starting his UFC career 9-1. After his first UFC loss, a unanimous decision to Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yushin/okami/479/) at UFC 69, the TUF 1 competitor dropped down from middleweight to welterweight and rattled off four straight wins.

But against Dan Hardy (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/hardy/492/) at UFC 105, he dropped a unanimous decision that would have earned him a title shot against welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/). He followed that up four months later with a loss to Paulo Thiago (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/paulo/thiago/651/), who choked him unconscious in the second round.

Then Swick's problems really began. A stomach ailment kept him sidelined until this past January, when he was scheduled to face David Mitchell (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/david/mitchell/1597/) at the Fight for the Troops 2 show. But Mitchell pulled out with an injury, and Swick decided he could use more time to recover from the stomach issues.

Now, eight months later, Swick's comeback fight will again have to wait.

Silva (12-1), a highly touted Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, has not lost since December 2006. All his fights have been in his native Brazil, and seven of his 12 wins have been by submission.

UFC 134 will be the promotion's return to Brazil for the first time since 1998. The pay-per-view, headlined by a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) and Okami, will take place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Anderson Silva will be sponsored by Nike and Brazilian soccer club, Corinthians Paulista, at UFC 134 in Rio.
The two new sponsors add to the Spider’s total for the big event in Brazil on August 27th.

The Nike deal was confirmed by Nike Brazil Director of Sports Marketing Luis Alexandre although terms of the deal were not disclosed.

details of the soccer sponsor:

On Monday, officials from Brazilian soccer team Sport Club Corinthians Paulista — also sponsored by Nike — announced a multi-tiered marketing initiative in which the pound-for-pound great will be prominently featured. Silva, a well-known Corinthians booster, will don the club’s jersey during his entrance at UFC 134 and will lend his name to a new MMA facility to be constructed by the team in his hometown of Sao Paulo.
Payout Perspective:

The champ is cashing in on his status with some notable sponsorships. Last week he inked a deal with Burger King for UFC 134. It is worth noting that Silva’s marketing firm, 9ine, is a newly created firm founded by former soccer player Ronaldo. The firm was created for the burgeoning sports market in Brazil. Silva signed on with the firm earlier this year. Through 9ine, he received a big sponsorship deal with Brazilian company, Bozzano, for his title fight with Vitor Belfort. Its not known whether the Bozzano sponsorship will continue at UFC 134. Although new in name, 9ine is backed by global media/communications company, WPP.

The mainstream sponsors show how big this event is in Brazil. Of course, Silva is the champion and in the main event of the card so that helps with visibility. Silva joins Diego Sanchez, Urijah Faber (Sacramento Kings) and Mark Hominick (Hamilton Tigercats) as fighters that have been sponsored by professional sports teams.

UFC Rio: Nogueira uses a “motivational picture” on his camp for Schaub
Photo Guilherme Cruz
http://www.tatame.com/imagensup/7631/13130989303606.g.jpg

Brendan Schaub defeated Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 128, on march, and challenged Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira right after the fight. And he specifically asked the UFC to match him against the Pride and UFC legend at UFC Rio. Dana White accepted his proposal, and they’ll fight in 16 days.

Training hard at Rio de Janeiro, Nogueira is working hard on his wrestling techniques with Eric Albarracin, and the coach used a photo to “motivate” the Brazilian on training. And it’s working so much that his training partners need to make him stop training: “Go away, Digão… Somebody take him out of here”, Anderson Silva yelled after their last training. Watch out, Schaub!

Miss iets opgelopen in trainingkamp.

UFC 134 a Homecoming for Brazilian Talent

For as long as mixed martial arts has existed -- and even before anyone used the term -- Brazil has produced a wealth of fighting talent. But as a lucrative spectator market for the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc), Brazil has lagged far behind the United States, not to mention Canada and even some European countries that have never produced much in the way of MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) talent.

With UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) taking place in Rio de Janeiro on August 27, however, the UFC thinks it may have finally reached the point where it can showcase its Brazilian fighters at home, and see them get as much recognition from Brazilian fans as they get in North America.

"It was very important for us -- Brazil has exploded in popularity for the UFC," said UFC President Dana White. "It's a big deal."

UFC 134 sold out the HSBC Arena, which frequently hosts concerts and will be the venue for basketball and gymnastics at the 2016 Olympics (http://olympics.fanhouse.com/), on the first day that tickets were available. White said the UFC underestimated the demand for tickets in Brazil.

"We're very excited it was a fast sellout -- things sold out in an hour," White said. "We were a little gunshy down there. We had a 14,000-seat arena down there and 350,000 people were online for tickets. We probably could have done a bigger arena."

Fourteen Brazilians will participate in the 12-fight UFC 134 card, and one of them, former light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua, said Tuesday that he's pumped about fighting back home, where he hasn't fought since 2003, when he was 21 years old.

"I'm very happy to be fighting in Brazil," Rua said. "I'm very motivated to do a good showing and to give something back to the fans who give me so much support, not only here in Brazil but all over the world."

White said he believes recent fights featuring Brazilian stars, including the Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) vs. Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/) fight in February, have garnered more attention for the UFC than it has ever before received in Brazil. And he said he thinks Brazil represents a big step toward the UFC's southern expansion.

"We're doing a lot in Latin America and Brazil is our first big step," White said.

One of the reasons there are so many great fighters from Brazil is that the culture has long been accepting of full-contact martial arts, whereas in other countries, there's resistance to MMA.

"As you go into every market it's different," White said. "There's no doubt about it: Brazil will be a zillion times easier than the UK and Europe have been. . . . And there's so many talented guys that come out of there. Not just talented guys, literally icons of the sport come from Brazil. It's the country where this thing started ... it's a fighting culture there. People get it and like it."

And if the 14,000 fans at UFC 134 like it, the UFC will be back soon.

Dana White Calls Yushin Okami the Best Japanese Fighter Ever

UFC President Dana White is fond of saying that the only way to prove you're the best fighter in the world is to do it in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc). It's not that there aren't any good fighters in other promotions, White believes, it's just that the only fighters who consistently test themselves against the best in the world are the ones who do it inside the Octagon.

By that rationale, White says Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yushin/okami/479/) -- who will fight Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) -- is the greatest Japanese fighter in MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) history.

"In my opinion, Yushin Okami is the best fighter ever to come out of Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/)," White said. "This guy didn't fight cans and get this built-up, mythological record."

Fighters who fight "cans" and build up a "mythological record" are a constant thorn in the side of White, who regularly complains about fans and members of the media who proclaim Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) -- whose best moments came in Japan, and who never fought in the UFC -- as the greatest fighter in history. White always insists that Silva is the best ever, and now that he's promoting Silva against Okami, he's talking up Okami as the best ever to come out of Japan.

A lot of longtime fans of Japanese MMA -- especially the fans from the Pride days -- would disagree. Kazushi Sakuraba (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kazushi/sakuraba/110/), Takanori Gomi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/takanori/gomi/721/), Kid Yamamoto, Hayoto Sakurai, Caol Uno (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/caol/uno/237/) and Shinya Aoki could all make a case that they've accomplished more in mixed martial arts than Okami has.

White is right, however, that none of those fighters have proven it in the Octagon. Aoki has never fought in the UFC. Sakuraba and Sakurai each fought in the UFC just once, with Sakuraba fighting on the UFC's Japan card in 1997, and Sakurai losing to Matt Hughes in 2002. Gomi and Yamamoto are both currently under contract to the UFC, but both were past their prime before they ever appeared inside the Octagon. Uno had some success in the UFC and fought twice for the UFC lightweight title, but his overall record in the UFC was just 3-5-2.

And White is surely right that if Okami beats Silva -- a very big "if" -- he would have an excellent case that he's the best fighter ever to come out of Japan. Okami has already beaten Silva once, although that was a controversial disqualification. If Okami were to beat Silva convincingly, that would become the signature win of his career and completely transform his reputation, while simultaneously knocking Silva from the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.

"Anderson Silva is fighting for his legacy," White said. "Yushin Okami is fighting for respect."

For Okami, White believes, a win over Silva would make it impossible for anyone to deny that he's the greatest fighter ever to come out of Japan.

"If he wins this fight," White said, "he'll get the credit he finally deserves."

Shogun “two wins away from a title shot”, says Dana White Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Mauricio Shogun will have now, in UFC Rio, a rematch with the American Forrest Griffin, the first guy to ever beat him in Ultimate. With that extra element on the table, the Brazilian is preparing for fighting at the HSBC Arena.

“I just think about doing my best and winning. I don’t think about the worst, I know I can do it”, tells Mauricio. “It was a bitter defeat, I was upset about it, but I’ve trained a lot to overcome that”.
Complimenting his opponent, Shogun hopes for an exciting bout.

“Forrest is a very good fighter, and I knew I could meet him again. I’ve evolved a lot, and so did he, and it’ll be a great fight”, tells Rua.

“There’s no easy fight in 205”, added Griffin.

Coming from a loss to Jon Jones, when he was dethroned, Shogun might get back to the right track for a chance at the title with a new triumph. “Shogun is one of the best guys in the world, and he might be two wins away from a title shot. But it depends on how the fight go”, said Dana White.

Thumbs up if you think Kenny Florian is a good color commentator. Not that you have a choice, mind you, as "KenFlo" will be replacing Joe Rogan in the broadcast booth for UFC 134: "Rio" on August 27 in Brazil, according to MMA Weekly. That's because the comedian has resumed his role as host for NBC's "Fear Factor" and will be on location filming for the upcoming season. Rogan is expected to return at "Battle on the Bayou" on Sept. 17 in New Orleans.

UFC Considering Manaus, Brazil Show in 2012, Possible Crowd of 100,000

With a sold-out event already guaranteed for the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s first voyage in over a decade to Brazil, the wheels are already in motion for the promotion's return in 2012. And one of the possibilities is a whopper.

In fact, if the UFC pulls it off, it could become the biggest MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) show of all-time.

According to several Brazilian newspapers (http://acritica.uol.com.br/craque/Amazonia-Amazonas-Proprietario-UFC-participa-reuniao-Manaus_0_541145913.html), on Tuesday, Zuffa co-owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta met with Omar Aziz, the governor of Amazonas, and his deputy Jose Melo, among others. There, the group discussed a possible August 2012 date for the UFC that could nearly double the UFC's previous record attendance.

According to the reports, the event would be held at Manaus' Convention Center -- popularly called "Sambódromo." The sprawling, outdoor venue is over 400 meters long and can hold a capacity of over 100,000.

"The opportunity to realize the UFC in Manaus and bring home some of the great fighters who are from this region is something that makes us very excited," Lorenzo Fertitta said.

To date, the largest crowd in UFC history is the 55,724 that filled Rogers Centre in Toronto for UFC 129. The all-time MMA attendance record is held by a joint PRIDE/K-1 promotion in 2002 that reportedly drew 91,107 fans to Tokyo National Stadium in Japan, though that number was never verified and largely believed to have been inflated.

Saturday's UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) will see 14,000 fans fill Rio's HSBC Arena. The event sold out in just over an hour, and UFC officials have noted regret at not booking a larger venue. The Manaus show would potentially blow that show away, along with every other show UFC's ever done.

Among the Zuffa-employed fighters with ties to Manaus are current featherweight champion Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) and current Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) middleweight champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ronaldo/souza/896/).

Sonnen: UFC 134 trip to support Okami canceled due to sponsor intervention, police threat (http://mmajunkie.com/news/24937/sonnen-ufc-134-trip-to-support-okami-canceled-due-to-sponsor-intervention-police-threat.mma)

TUALATIN, Ore. – Chael Sonnen wanted to be in Yushin Okami's corner for UFC 134, and he still has a plane ticket to Rio de Janeiro.

It's Brazil that doesn't want him there.

Sonnen said a major sponsor of Okami's requested he not attend the pay-per-view event, which takes place Saturday at Rio's HSBC Arena.

A source with knowledge of the situation told MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) that Praetorian, a Brazil-based MMA brand, threatened to pull the Japanese fighter's sponsorship if Sonnen attended.

"There's a line of people that want to kick his ass," the source said.

And that could be the least of problems for the expert trash-talker. Sonnen said friends in the country forwarded him a local-media report in which a police chief threatened to arrest him on sight if he showed. The official cited a law that makes disparaging the national identity a crime.

"You don't have freedom of speech in Brazil; put it like that," Sonnen told MMAjunkie.com after a workout at Team Quest Tualatin.

The source said Sonnen's claim is untrue. But the fighter's bombastic interviews have created quite a stir.

In several highly circulated clips and on Twitter, Sonnen has maligned the South American country and several of its most popular fighters. Former light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida has been a favorite target, as have national icons and brothers Antonio Rodrigo and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Brazil-based MMA manager Alex Davis said Sonnen's words have united Brazil's MMA community.

"Brazilians don't get together on other things, but they've gotten together on this," he said. "Brazilian authorities would not arrest Sonnen for anything he said. They would defend him. But he is talking about people that a whole generation of fighters worship."

Okami, of course, is facing another object of worship, that of reigning middleweight champ Anderson Silva, in UFC 134's headliner. Silva has not been on Sonnen's Christmas card list for some time.

While the onetime middleweight contender expressed regret over not being able to help his teammate, Sonnen is there to do what's best for his frequent training partner, which, in this case, is to stay away.

"I only want to be there to help him," Sonnen said. "I don't need to see the show. I can watch the show on TV. I was going exclusively in support of Yushin, and frankly, it's been headed this way for a long time. It's been headed the direction of, 'Hey, this is becoming a distraction.'

"This fight isn't about me. I'm not involved. I'm here to lend you support. But I don't want things thrown at what will unintentionally be him while he's in the ring or we're going to the ring.

"This is serious business. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it's not my place to disturb it or shift any type of attention to me. This is his moment, his night, his time to be the world champ."

Even in the Rain, Brazilian Fans Make UFC Open Workouts Memorable Affair'

RIO DE JANEIRO -- If the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) held an outdoor open workout on Venice Beach on a rainy winter weekday to promote an upcoming event, you'd probably call them crazy. At the very least, you'd call them poor planners, and you'd be right.

In Brazil, however, the rules are different. Especially if you're bringing UFC fights to a city of passionate sports fans who have never seen an MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) event of this magnitude. And especially if you've got Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) on the guest list.

Throngs of energetic fans packed the sands of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday afternoon just to get a look at their MMA heroes. What's usually a low-key fight week photo op quickly turned into a beach party, and soon it became abundantly clear that UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) wouldn't be just another fight card. Not in this city.

People in costumes danced to imaginary beats. Fans broke out in impromptu chants. A Brazilian reporter tried to handle a microphone in one hand and his cell phone in the other, all while wearing a pair of boxing gloves for some reason.

Did any of them even notice it was raining? Did any of them care?

"Fighting's popular in Brazil," said UFC light heavyweight Forrest Griffin (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/forrest/griffin/380/). "Who'd have thought?"

Griffin was one of the first fighters to hit the mats in the afternoon, though he didn't stay there long. The hired hands in raincoats who penguin-walked with towels under their feet to dry off the training surface never even had a chance to get out of his way. Griffin waved to the crowd, did about three minutes worth of stretches and calisthenics, then decided to call it good.

When a Brazilian reporter asked why he didn't attempt an actual workout, Griffin went into his usual deadpan.

"I don't know. Why didn't I?" he shot back. "I mean, think about it. Why would I want you guys to see my bag? You got to pay money to see my bag. Or at least buy cable TV."

When asked if that meant there was something significantly different in his bag for his rematch with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua on Saturday night, Griffin admitted it was mostly going to be the usual stuff on his part.

"It's new to Brazil though, dammit," he said.

But then, these fans didn't really come to see Griffin, and he knew it. It was UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva who most of the chants and cheers were reserved for. That is, once he finally fought through the afternoon Rio traffic and walked up to claim his belt, which the UFC's Reed Harris had carefully protected from the rain using a white beach towel.

Silva might be regarded as one of, if not the best pound-for-pound fighter when he's competing in the U.S., but it Brazil he's much more than that. He's a superstar. He's Michael Jordan, Hulk Hogan, and maybe one of the Kardashian sisters, all rolled into one.

Cameras swarmed him as he stepped briefly on the mats, and the frantic Brazilian media members nearly knocked each other to the ground trying to get a word or two out of him. While a UFC open workout in the states might only garner attention from MMA websites and a few local news outlets, in Rio it seems that everyone with a video camera and a microphone was willing to run one another over to get a glimpse of the champ.

That seemed fine with Silva, who showed up in glasses and earphones and removed neither as he held court all in Portuguese (with no translation provided by either his camp or the UFC), showing a level of enthusiasm one doesn't typically see out of him at most fight week media responsibilities.

But this one was special. This one was for his countrymen, who jumped up and down in the sand and cheered him like he was royalty, even if he didn't bother to do much of a workout, which was, ostensibly anyway, the whole purpose of the afternoon.

Saturday's UFC 134 Prelims Get Full Spike, Facebook Treatment From Rio

The last time the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) was in Brazil, there was no such thing as Spike TV (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/SpikeTV/) or Facebook (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/Facebook/).

But for Saturday's UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/), the promotion's first trip to the South American cradle of MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) since 1998, fans can watch all 12 fights on a combination of Facebook, Spike and pay-per-view.

This will be the 15th consecutive event that the UFC has utilized Facebook to air preliminary card fights, dating back to January. And for the ninth straight event, each fight on the card will be broadcast in some form. The first five UFC 134 prelims will stream live on Facebook, followed by a pair of fights on Spike leading into the pay-per-view broadcast.

A pair of fights between Brazilians and Americans leads the Spike broadcast. A middleweight bout between Rousimar Palhares (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rousimar/palhares/404/) and Dan Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/miller/445/) kicks things off, followed by a lightweight bout between Thiago Tavares (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/thiago/tavares/533/) and Spencer Fisher (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/spencer/fisher/269/).

Palhares (12-3, 5-2 UFC) fought exclusively in his native Brazil until signing with the UFC in 2008. His last three wins have been by submission. Miller (13-5, 1 NC, 5-4 UFC) has struggled since starting his UFC career 3-0. He suffered a three-fight skid with decision losses to Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/), Demian Maia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demian/maia/326/) and Michael Bisping (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/bisping/368/), but rebounded with back-to-back wins over John Salter and Joe Doerksen. But in March, he lost a unanimous decision to Nate Marquardt in his native New Jersey.

Tavares (15-4-1, 5-4-1 UFC) started his career 12-0 but has gone just 3-4-1 in his last eight fights. In March, he was knocked out by Shane Roller at UFC on Versus 3. Fisher (24-7, 9-6 UFC) is also coming off a loss. Ross Pearson took a unanimous decision from him at UFC 127 in Sydney in February, giving the Iowa-based fighter three losses in four fights.

On the UFC's Facebook page, fans will get a Brazilian-heavy lineup. An opening bantamweight bout between Canada's Yves Jabouin and American Ian Loveland is the only fight on the card to not feature a Brazilian. Three fights on the Facebook prelims feature Brazilians debuting in the UFC against fellow Brazilians. And Paulo Thiago (13-3, 3-3 UFC) looks to end a two-fight skid against David Mitchell (11-1, 0-1 UFC).

To gain access to the Facebook fights, which will begin at 6 p.m. Eastern, viewers must "like" the UFC on Facebook. As of Wednesday afternoon, the UFC had more than 6.2 million fans at the site. When the UFC first started streaming prelims fights on Facebook in January, it had approximately 4.5 million fans at the social networking site.

The UFC began streaming preliminary fights in January with its Fight for the Troops 2 show at Fort Hood, Texas. Since then, the promotion has included free Facebook fights for each event, regardless of the main card's platform – be it on pay-per-view, Spike or Versus. For the historic UFC 129 card in Toronto in April, five prelims were aired on Facebook, followed by a pair on Spike leading into the pay-per-view – meaning for the first time, fans were guaranteed the opportunity to see each fight on the card. That has continued for each of the eight events since then, including Saturday's card in Rio.

UFC 134 features a main event middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami, the last man to beat him – albeit by disqualification when Silva delivered an illegal upkick and Okami couldn't continue. The co-main event features a rematch between former light heavyweight champions Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Forrest Griffin. And also on the main card, heavyweight Brendan Schaub looks for his fifth straight win in a matchup against Brazilian legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Video: Shogun Rua Uses High Tech Strobe Sensory Training to Prepare for UFC 134: Rio

Basically, these glasses keep flashing intermittently. It temporary blocks his vision and makes it harder to react quicker or to avoid strikes. The goal is that by getting used to working out on these conditions, Shogun will learn to anticipate movement better, so once he removes the glasses, he should be able to react better to his opponent's strikes.

Yushin Okami Won't Say How, but Insists He'll Beat Anderson Silva at UFC 134

RIO DE JANEIRO -- When you're trying to conduct an interview through a translator, not everything gets through with perfect clarity. When you're trying to do it through two translators, that's when it starts to feel a little like communicating through smoke signals.

Take Wednesday afternoon's workouts, for example.

When a Brazilian reporter attempted to ask Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/YushinOkami/) whether he thought UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/AndersonSilva/) deserved to be called the world's best pound-for-pound fighter, that question then had to be translated from Portuguese to English for Okami's trainer/translator -- at this point, 'pound-for-pound' became 'weight-for-weight,' which confused everybody and necessitated a minute or so of word-wrangling between the two translators -- then into Japanese for Okami, who listened intently like a man trying to work out an Algebra question in his head before answering in Japanese, so that it could be translated into English by his trainer and finally into Portuguese by the UFC's translator.

It's like a game of telephone, only the subject always has something to do with grown men beating each other up for money, so at least there's a context you can guess at. From what we heard out of Okami, who was all business in the midst of Wednesday's Brazilian beach party, my guess is he expects to leave Rio as the UFC middleweight champ, even if he won't say how he plans on accomplishing it.

"I understand many people are saying Anderson Silva is the pound-for-pound fighter, but it really doesn't matter to me," Okami said via his translator. "I'm going to beat him, and I'm going to be the middleweight champion."

And how will the fans in Brazil feel about that, if Okami really does ruin their party in the UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC134/) main event on Saturday night? He doesn't know, and, not surprisingly, he doesn't particularly care.

Fighting Silva on neutral territory would be enough to think about. Fighting him in Brazil, where people have been "very warm" to him so far, according to Okami, is something he seems to be trying to put out of his mind entirely.

"I kind of knew that [the UFC] would ask [me] to come to Brazil. I knew it was coming," Okami said, adding later, "I don't think about where I fight; I always think about who I fight. This time I'm going to fight Anderson Silva."

Of course, that part of the equation is something he experienced before, when the two met in Honolulu in 2006, where Okami came away with a victory via disqualification after Silva hit him with an illegal upkick. That was many fights ago for both men, however, and lately Okami has been training in Oregon with Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/ChaelSonnen/), who took Silva to the brink last summer before succumbing to a fifth-round submission.

While Okami said that his first meeting with Silva gave him "a lot of lessons," he suggested that his approach in Saturday's title fight would be more than just a facsimile of Sonnen's game plan.

"I and Chael are different fighters, so obviously I cannot just imitate his fighting style," said Okami. "I need to adjust my style to fight Anderson Silva."

On Wednesday it quickly became apparent that the challenger was merely the supporting cast in the eyes of Brazilian fans. Silva was practically the whole show, and Okami was merely a necessary, though forgettable part of the scenery to them. He showed up early, became one of the few fighters to treat the workout portion of the open workouts at least semi-seriously, then answered questions and spent the rest of the time scowling in a corner by himself, waiting to leave.

As part of the pre-fight hype for this event, he's finally gotten his due from UFC president Dana White, who called him the "best fighter to come out of Japan." As far as UFC success alone, that's probably true.

At the same time, it's hard to tell how much of that is genuine appreciation for Okami's skills and how much is a marketing tactic.

Fortunately, Okami doesn't seem too influenced one way or another.

"I'm very glad to hear that coming from Mr. Dana," Okami said of White's praise. "But I'm doing this to be the best in the world, so I'm going to prove it in the next fight."

And how, exactly, does he plan to beat the man who many consider to be the "weight-for-weight" best in the world? There was one question he heard often, and one he certainly seemed to understand, but he wisely chose not to give a straight answer to it.

For now, all Okami is saying is that his strategy will be different from Sonnen's -- and it will work. That's the language of pre-fight certainty that all fighters understand. No translation necessary.

Brazilian MMA Fans Fire Back at Chael Sonnen

RIO DE JANEIRO -- One of the big storylines heading into UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) has been whether or not Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/), who has criticized the country and its fighters for over a year, will show up to corner his training partner Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yushin/okami/479/).
