Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will put his title on the line for the first time ever when he takes on number one contender Junior dos Santos at UFC 138, which is tentatively scheduled for the HP Pavillion in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 19, 2011.

Los Angeles Times today confirmed the date and location for the showdown with UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

Velasquez has not competed since beating Brock Lesnar to a pulp at UFC 121 in Oct. 2010 to win the belt. He has been on the mend ever since, recovering from a serious shoulder injury, which required even more serious surgery to repair.

With such a long layoff, as well as a fighting such a formidable opponent immediately upon his return, oddsmakers pegged "Brown Pride" as an early underdog.

Perhaps that will change now that it has been revealed that the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout will have home field advantage on fight night.

Dos Santos, meanwhile, has been cracking skulls (literally) and taking names since his Octagon debut back in 2008. He has rattled off seven consecutive wins since that time, finishing five of those fine folks before the final bell.

"Cigano" most recently blasted past Shane Carwin via unanimous decision at UFC 131 to punch his title ticket. He emphatically put his stamp on his status as the second best heavyweight in the division with yet another convincing win over the best the division has to offer.

Chris Weidman vs. Tom Lawlor Middleweight Bout Headed to UFC 138 in San Jose

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s recent all-out assault on fight announcements continued overnight with a middleweight bout for UFC 138 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC138/).

Tom Lawlor (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tom/lawlor/467/) will fight for the first time in what will be more than a year when he meets Chris Weidman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/weidman/1769/).

UFC 138, though not yet officially announced by the promotion, is expected to take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. It will be the UFC's debut in San Jose, a city it previously has stayed away from. San Jose was the home base of Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/), the UFC's one-time competitor that now falls under the Zuffa umbrella.

Weidman (6-0, 2-0 UFC) was a Division-I All-American wrestler at Hofstra University in his home state of New York. He transitioned to MMA, training under the tutelage of former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/matt/serra/212/) and coach Ray Longo at their Long Island gym, and success came quickly.

After going 4-0 for the New Jersey-based Ring of Combat promotion, including winning its middleweight belt, Weidman got a short-notice call to face Alessio Sakara (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alessio/sakara/448/) at UFC on Versus 3 in March, filling in for Rafael Natal (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rafael/natal/1594/). He dominated for a 30-27 sweep of the scorecards. Last month, his guillotine win over Jesse Bongfeldt at UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC131/) earned him Submission of the Night.

Lawlor (7-3, 1 NC, 3-2 UFC), a cast member of Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/TheUltimateFighter/)," last fought at UFC 121 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC121/) last October. His unanimous decision win at that event over TUF 4 vet Patrick Cote (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/patrick/cote/405/) was Cote's third straight loss and sent him packing from the UFC. That win snapped a two-fight skid for Lawlor, who had previously lost to Aaron Simpson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/aaron/simpson/662/) and Joe Doerksen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/joe/doerksen/322/) in 2010.

UFC 138 is expected to feature a main event heavyweight title fight between champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/CainVelasquez/) and top contender Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JuniordosSantos/). Velasquez's training home is at the San Jose-based American Kickboxing Academy. He has been out of action since winning the title against Brock Lesnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/BrockLesnar/) at UFC 121. dos Santos dominated Shane Carwin at UFC 131 to remain the No. 1 contender for the belt.

Cain Velasquez Set to Defend UFC Title vs. Junior dos Santos at UFC 139

PHILADELPHIA -- The surgically repaired shoulder of UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has fared well in workouts, and he is on track for a UFC 139 title match with Junior dos Santos, a source with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting on Thursday.

The bout has yet to be announced by the UFC, but is expected to be made official shortly.

A source with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting that both fighters verbally agreed to the bout, which will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, the home city of Velasquez's gym, American Kickboxing Academy.

Velasquez was first injured during his UFC 121 championship victory over Brock Lesnar, tearing his right rotator cuff, a setback that was expected to take between 6-8 months to heal. After a long layoff and rehabilitation, he recently ramped up his workouts and is said to be progressing well.

In the interim, No. 1 contender Dos Santos took a bout with Shane Carwin, winning a convincing unanimous decision at UFC 131.

Barring any unexpected setbacks, Velasquez will put his 9-0 record on the line on November 19, essentially in his backyard.

Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story Added to UFC 139

Martin Kampmann (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/MartinKampmann/) and Rick Story (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rick/story/669/) will both look to return to the win column in a UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) bout when the duo face each other.

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) confirmed the matchup on Wednesday morning.

Though not officially announced, UFC 139 is expected to take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Kampmann has lost two straight fights, though both were razor close and and led to controversy. In the first at UFC 121, he fought Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/shields/1202/), out-striking him during the bout that ultimately went Shields' way, mostly it seemed on the strength of four successful takedowns.

He returned last March against Diego Sanchez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/diego/sanchez/461/). Again, Kampmann out-struck his opponent (77-51, according to FightMetric (http://blog.fightmetric.com/2011/03/sanchez-vs-kampmann-official-ufc.html)), yet he lost another decision. The back-to-back losses dropped him to 17-5.

Story, meanwhile, is coming off a more decisive loss, one which snapped a six-fight win streak. In June, he faced Charlie Brenneman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/charlie/brenneman/1478/) on short notice and dropped a unanimous decision. With the defeat, he fell to 13-4.

UFC 139's main event has yet to be confirmed by the UFC, but as MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting reported earlier this month, heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) is on track to return from a shoulder injury and defend his title against Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/).

The event takes place on November 19

"Josh Koscheck returns at UFC 139 in the heart of his training ground San Jose, he will be looking for a jump to middleweight." by Matt Erickson.

Ryan Bader, Jason Brilz Agree to Fight at UFC 139 in San Jose

A pair of light heavyweights badly in need of a win will meet at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) in November.

Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/) and Jason Brilz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jason/brilz/227/), each with two-fight losing streaks for the first time in their careers, have agreed to a fight on the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s Nov. 19 pay-per-view in San Jose, Calif. The promotion announced the fight Tuesday night on its official website.

The UFC 139 card, which is quickly starting to fill up with several recent fight announcements, features a main event heavyweight title fight between San Jose-based champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/).

Bader (12-2, 5-2 UFC) started his UFC career 5-0, and his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career 12-0, including the title of Season 8 champion of "The Ultimate Fighter." The two-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State then began a methodical climb up the light heavyweight rankings that culminated with a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rogerio/nogueira/797/) in the co-main event of UFC 119 last September.

The win over Nogueira got Bader a fight against Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) at UFC 126. But Jones was on his rapid ascension to the top of the 205-pound heap and submitted Bader in the second round. Jones got a quick title shot against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, which he won in dominating fashion. Bader had to regroup.

But against Tito Ortiz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tito/ortiz/234/) at UFC 132 last month, Bader fell victim to what has been the year's biggest upset. Ortiz dropped Bader with a short right hand early in the first round, then moved in for a guillotine choke that forced Bader to tap. The win by Ortiz was his first since October 2006, saved his job in the UFC and made Bader the answer to an MMA trivia question, albeit on the wrong end.

Brilz (18-4-1, 3-3 UFC) saw his two-fight skid begin with a controversial split decision loss to Nogueira at UFC 114 in May 2010. That bout, which won Fight of the Night, had most in attendance, and many scoring the fight live, believing Brilz was the victim of bad judging.

After nearly a year off due to injury, Brilz returned at UFC 129 in Toronto to face Vladimir Matyushenko. He never had a chance to get started – Matyushenko knocked him out just 20 seconds into the first round.

Though he may get some leeway for the Nogueira fight, a loss to Bader would mean the former University of Nebraska-Omaha wrestler, and current assistant coach, would have just one win since March 2009.

UFC 139, though not yet officially announced by the promotion, will be its debut in San Jose, the former home base of one-time rival Strikeforce. The pay-per-view is expected to take place at the HP Pavilion.

Aside from the heavyweight championship in the main event, UFC 139 will also feature a bantamweight contenders bout between former champions Brian Bowles and Urijah Faber, a welterweight bout between Martin Kampmann and Rick Story and a light heavyweight bout between Stephan Bonnar and Kyle Kingsbury. In addition, though he does not yet have an opponent named, Josh Koscheck is expected to make his return at the event, and is planning on a move from welterweight to middleweight for the first time since his appearance on Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Another key Strikeforce star is heading to the UFC.

Vitor Belfort (20-9 MMA, UFC) announced on his official website that he's fighting former Strikeforce middleweight champion and noted kickboxer Cung Le (7-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif.

On Friday sources close to the event told MMAjunkie.com the bout was under consideration but that Le was still working on details for his UFC deal.

A deal apparently has been reached.

UFC 139 takes place Nov. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. With a heavyweight title fight between champ Cain Velasquez and Junior Santos moved from UFC 139 to UFC on FOX 1 – and given Le's massive following in San Jose – he and Belfort very likely could headline the pay-per-view show.

Le, 39, went 17-0 as a Sanshou kickboxer before moving to MMA in 2006. Le, who hasn't fought in 16 months while pursuing an acting career, has fought exclusively for Strikeforce, where he posted a 7-1 record (with seven knockout victories) with an array of flashy and highlight-reel wins. His only defeat during his run came to Scott Smith, who pulled off a stunning come-from-behind KO win in the final couple minutes of their December 2009 bout. However, Le avenged the defeat in his next bout with a KO set up by a spinning back kick.

Thanks heavily to Le, Strikeforce has drawn some massive crowds in San Jose, where the fighter has many Vietnamese fans. In fact, he was a part of both of the best-attended Strikeforce events in history. Both took place in San Jose.

He now meets 34-year-old Belfort, who recently rebounded from a vicious KO title loss to champ Anderson Silva with a dominant victory over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133. Belfort, who's now won six of his past seven fights, scored a "Knockout of the Night" award with the Akiyama victory. In fact, his past four victories (and nine of his past 10) have all come via knockout.

Le talks debuting in the UFC in exclusive interview

Cung Le is returning to the cage, but this time, it’ll be the Octagon.

The news was announced late this week that the former Strikeforce middleweight champion was signing with the most successful organization in the sport. He already has an opponent, UFC veteran Vitor Belfort, whom he’ll face in what will likely be the main event of UFC 139 in San Jose in November.

HeavyMMA caught up with the newest member of the UFC roster on Saturday night in Cincinnati.

“I’ll be in San Jose for UFC 139 and I’m fighting Vitor Belfort,” Le confirmed. “I’m very excited and honored to be a part of the UFC. I want to thank Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta for the opportunity and I’m going to fight my heart out.”

While Le’s name has been thrown around for the past few years in potential dream match-ups for MMA fans, Belfort doesn’t care to acknowledge his status. In a recent interview, “The Phenom” made comments suggesting that he didn’t know who Le was or what he had accomplished.

Le addressed the issue.

“What Vitor says doesn’t bother me. He can talk all he wants. We’ll take care of business on November 19th. Let him talk. I don’t like to talk so he can do all the talking. I’ll let him have that job and we will work it out in San Jose. Vitor is very dangerous, but I’m very dangerous too. We have two dangerous guys in the ring and we are going to see which one of us is more dangerous.”

Le says his movie-making career is on hold for the time being.

“Every time I commit to something I always go 185%. Right now I’m not doing any movies and won’t while I prepare. There will be no distractions and I’m just going to focus on this fight.”

Le is a member of the American Kickboxing Academy team and that is where he will return to prepare for Belfort. On Saturday night, he was on hand to watch his AKA teammates go 4-0 on the Strikeforce card.

“My gym is Cung Le’s AKA. I’m part of the AKA team and I’m going to keep my training there. Everyone saw us tonight. We dominated and we won all of our fights on this card. I’m going to AKA to train smart, hard and make sure I stay injury free. I’m very proud of my teammates that fought tonight and it was just awesome to see.”

“I want to thank the fans for all of their support. I’m happy to be a part of the UFC now and I’m going to do my very best to entertain. If fans want to follow me on twitter I’m @CungLe185.”

Cung Le 'Honored And Excited' to Make UFC Debut And Face Vitor Belfort

After a 19-month layoff, Cung Le (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cung/le/1001/) will finally return to fighting when he faces Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/) at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) on November 19. That's a lengthy layoff for anyone, but especially long for Le, who turned 39 years old in May. But while most lengthy periods of inactivity are the result of injury issues or contract disputes, the flashy fighter wasn't gone due to rehabilitating from surgery or holding out for more money. He was busy making films.

While he had spoken to the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) several months ago about possibly joining them, things didn't come together for the two sides until after the UFC moved its original UFC 139 main event of Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) vs. Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) up one week to the UFC on FOX premiere.

That left a hole at the top of the card, and Le was more than happy to fill it.

"I feel honored and very excited," Le said on Monday's edition of The MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Hour. "It's just nerves and everything going on. It's been pretty exciting."

Le said he wasn't quite sure how he got out of his Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) deal to move over to the UFC, leaving specifis to his management, but said he originally began lobbying UFC executives Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White for the opportunity during the Zuffa "Fighter Summit" back in May.

At the time, Le was coming off the taping of back-to-back-to-back film projects and spending time with his family. He says Fertitta told him they'd look to work a fight out for him depending on his movie schedule, but nothing of substance happened until about two weeks ago, when talks were reignited. In a short time, he was approached with an offer.

"Vitor was the only one offered to me, and when they said, 'Hey Cung, we'd like you to fight Vitor,' I said yes," he said. "Go big or go home."

Le said his interest in the matchup comes from the two fighters' backgrounds. Both he and Belfort gained their reputations as strikers. All seven of Le's pro MMA wins are by knockout and prior to that, he gained renown as a pro kickboxer. Belfort, meanwhile, is considered one of the sport's all-time great knockout artists.

"We'll find out who's more dangerous come November 19," he said.

Le said he had signed a six-fight deal with UFC, but said that when it comes to his future, he plans to take things one fight at a time. Le said that in hopes of extending his career as far as it will go, he keeps himself healthy, eating well and consistently training. He also noted he hasn't had a lengthy MMA career which might have led to wear and tear on his body.

The first of those fights comes in San Jose, California, which is Le's hometown. He also trains at the city's American Kickboxing Academy gym. Last Saturday, Le was in Cincinnati and watched in person AKA's huge weekend at Strikeforce, when the gym's fighters (Luke Rockhold (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/luke/rockhold/1294/), Daniel Cormier (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/daniel/cormier/1409/), Muhammed Lawal and Mike Kyle) went 4-0. That made Le hungry to return home and get back in the gym to represent his team, and his town in the biggest fight of his career.

"It's a dream," Le said. "It's like coming full circle. My first MMA fight was in San Jose, and now my first UFC fight is going to be in San Jose. Definitely, I'm very excited about it."

Dan Henderson's long-anticipated return to the UFC is now a reality.

Henderson (28-8 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has verbally agreed to fight former UFC light heavyweight champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (20-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) at UFC 139. Sources close to the event today confirmed the news to MMAjunkie.com following an initial report from MMAWeekly.com.

UFC 139 takes place Nov. 19 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. While it's likely that Henderson vs. Rua will take main event or co-main event status on the pay-per-view card, the position of the bout could not be confirmed.

It's also unclear whether Henderson will vacate his Strikeforce light heavyweight belt, though all signs point to a fresh start two-plus years after he left the UFC.

Henderson was unable to come to terms with the UFC executives on a new contract following his explosive knockout of Michael Bisping at UFC 100 and in late 2009 signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce. The California-based promotion was purchased by UFC parent company Zuffa LLC this past March.

During his Strikeforce tenure, Henderson went 3-1 with the promotion and most recently took home a huge win when he stopped once-dominant Fedor Emelianenko with strikes this past July in a non-title heavyweight contest.

Following that triumph, he expressed hope that he might be able to fight in both Strikeforce and the UFC.

"I definitely feel like there's still a possibility for me to defend that belt in Strikeforce," he recently told Clinch Gear Radio. "But I think now that the UFC has bought Strikeforce, they need to make money off me, and I need to make money, so we'll see what happens.

"But I'd like to work out a deal where I'm fighting in both promotions.

This past March, he picked up the fourth major title of his career when he stopped Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante to win the light heavyweight title. Before that, he knocked out former champ Renato "Babalu" Sobral to mute a decision loss to Jake Shields in his promotional debut.

With three consecutive victories by way of stoppage, Henderson, a former two-title PRIDE champion, has hardly seen his stock soar to greater highs.

In Rua, Henderson meets a former UFC champion on the rebound. "Shogun" stopped former champ Forrest Griffin in less than two minutes at UFC 134, which put him back on the right foot after he lost his title to now-champ Jon "Bones" Jones at UFC 128.

Dana White Confirms Dan Henderson vs. Shogun Rua at UFC 139

UFC 139 was once scheduled to host the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) heavyweight championship, but after that bout was moved up a week to the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX headliner, the search began for a replacement fight.

Now, it's set. Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) has re-signed with the promotion and will take on Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mauricio/rua/457/) at the event to be held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

UFC president Dana White confirmed both Henderson's signing and the fight's booking to 5thRound.com (http://www.5thround.com/89797/dana-white-dan-henderson-signed-exclusive-ufc-contract-unsure-about-strikeforce-belt/) after Tuesday's UFC on FOX press conference in Hollywood, California.

The bout was originally reported by MMA Weekly (http://mmaweekly.com/shogun-rua-tabbed-to-welcome-dan-henderson-back-at-ufc-139) on Monday, but at the time, multiple sources told MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting that the deal was not yet done, though it was the intended direction of the promotion.

Signing with Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/), Henderson (28-8) becomes the third organizational champion since the Zuffa-Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) merger to vacate his belt, following welterweight Nick Diaz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nick/diaz/506/) and heavyweight Alistair Overeem (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alistair/overeem/808/).

Henderson went 3-1 during his Strikeforce run, losing his debut bout to Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/shields/1202/) in a decision before scoring consecutive knockout wins over Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Rafael Cavalcante (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rafael/cavalcante/1390/) and Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/).

The 41-year-old will be in his third go-round with the UFC. He won two matches in the organization in 1997, then spent several years fighting overseas in Japanese organizations before returning to the UFC in 2007, going 3-2 along the way.

Rua (20-5) is fresh off an August 27 first-round knockout win over Forrest Griffin (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/forrest/griffin/380/) at UFC Rio. It was Rua's first fight back since losing the light-heavyweight championship to Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/).

UFC 139 also features former Strikeforce star Cung Le making his UFC debut against Vitor Belfort, and Brian Bowles facing Urijah Faber in a key bantamweight bout.

UFC President Dana White twittered the news moments ago.

Vitor is injured and out of San Jose fight. Now Cung Le will fight Wandy!

The extent of Belfort’s injury was not announced.
Le will be making his UFC debut at the San Jose event. San Jose is his adopted hometown, and the location of all eight of his fights under the Strikeforce banner.
Le is the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, as well as an accomplished kickboxer, touting an undefeated record at 17-0. His only career loss was to Scott Smith at Strikeforce Evolution in December of 2009. He avenged that loss to Smith in most recent fight on June 2010,
Silva last fought at UFC 132, losing to Chris Leben via TKO. Silva now sits at 2-4 since returning to the UFC just under four years ago.
The combined age for Le and Silva is 74, one of the oldest combined ages for a fight in UFC history.

UFC 139 Bout a Dream Come True for Cung Le, but Last Stand for Wanderlei Silva

Cung Le (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/CungLe/) isn't the only fighter to find out the hard way that acting and professional fighting don't always mix, especially when done in the wrong order, but at least he used it as a learning experience, he said at Tuesday's UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) press conference.

"I actually learned my lesson the first time when I came back against Scott Smith (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/scott/smith/376/)," Le said. "I wasn't very busy training when I was on the movie set. I was just more focused on getting into character."

He started off well enough against Smith in their first meeting in December of 2009. But his lack of training caught up to him in the final round, and Smith came out of nowhere to score the upset via knockout of a fading, winded Le.

When they signed on to face each other in a rematch some seven months later, he had every opportunity to make the same mistake. Fortunately for Le, experience -- particularly the painful kind - is an excellent teacher.

"I was doing some film work, [but] I made sure I trained every day and I stayed in shape," he said, adding that this time around, as he prepares to face Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/wanderlei/silva/275/) at UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif., he's been in the gym since February.

"I am focused on this fight, so right now it's all about being an MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) fighter," said Le.

For Silva, who stepped in as a replacement for the injured Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/), the stakes are even higher. UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White has made it clear that he thinks Silva might need to hang up the gloves after his knockout loss to Chris Leben (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/leben/414/) at UFC 132 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+132/), and this could be the Brazilian's last chance to prove to his boss that he still has some fight left in him.

"I love fighting. I love the sport. I grew up inside the ring, inside the Octagon. I want to fight as long as I can," Silva told reporters.

When asked if he felt that his back was against the wall in the fight with Le, he didn't argue. "Some guys fight better in that position. I'm thinking I am one of [those] guys," he said.

Le, a decorated Sanshou kickboxer who turned to MMA relatively late in life and fought the entirety of his four-year career in Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) up until this point, said he specifically sought out a deal with the UFC because he wanted to fight in the Octagon, and not simply because he wanted to be on this card in his adopted hometown of San Jose.

"It really means a lot," he said. "I've fought on many platforms, different styles, but being a UFC fighter now, being the co-main event, definitely is a dream come true. Just earlier this morning I was looking at the picture where I was at the refugee camp, and now being in the co-main event of the UFC, it's a dream come true. I'm very excited and I'm going to be ready to rock and roll and give the fans what they want to see."

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will not train at Kings MMA for his fight at UFC 139. | Photo: Sherdog.com

After losing his UFC light heavyweight title to Jon Jones (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Jon-Jones-27944) in March, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Mauricio-Rua-5707) decided to return to his roots and train with former longtime coach Rafael Cordeiro (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Rafael-Cordeiro-422) at Kings MMA in Huntington Beach, Calif. Though the collaboration yielded Rua’s highlight-reel knockout of Forrest Griffin (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Forrest-Griffin-3526) in August, it appears Rua will prepare elsewhere for his main event tussle with former Strikeforce champ Dan Henderson (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Dan-Henderson-195) at November’s UFC 139 (http://www.sherdog.com/events/UFC-139-Shogun-vs-Hendo-17551).

Rua’s manager, Eduardo Alonso, confirmed Friday to Sherdog.com that Rua will not return to Kings MMA (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder.php?search=yes&association=Kings+MMA) to train for Henderson, but preferred to keep quiet on who will be involved in Rua’s camp. Alonso said only that workouts will take place in Sao Paulo, where Rua trained in 2009 for his UFC 97 win over Chuck Liddell (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Chuck-Liddell-192).

Alonso asked understanding from media and fans curious about further information.

“We don’t see any advantage at this moment to feed our opponents information about the work we’ve been developing,” stated Alonso. “This is a work philosophy we’ve adopted at other times, and now we’ve decided to do it again. It’s nothing to do with the fans, and we understand their hunger for news. At the right time, further information will be given, but I can’t give up on what we decided and agreed to do.”

There had been no evidence of a rupture between 29-year-old Rua and his former Chute Boxe (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder.php?association=Chute+Boxe) coach. In September, just before the announcement of Rua’s date with Henderson, Cordeiro (Pictured with Rua) stated that he expected Shogun to return to Kings MMA as soon as possible. On Friday, Cordeiro told Sherdog.com that he was not hurt by Rua’s decision, but also preferred not to speak much on the matter.

“There’s no problem,” said Cordeiro, 38. “If he believes it would be easier for him to train [in Sao Paulo], then it’s great, go there. There’s no big drama. I just wish him the best and good luck. I want to see him holding the belt again. Life is made by choices and it was his and his team’s choice. God bless him and I’m OK with that.”

Kings MMA’s fighters are allowed to train in other gyms, Cordeiro explained; for example, Kings-affiliated fighters Fabricio Werdum (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Fabricio-Werdum-8390), Mark Munoz (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Mark-Munoz-22411) and Wanderlei Silva (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Wanderlei-Silva-209) each have their own teams.

“I’m not in the habit of inviting athletes, because my gym doesn’t give exclusivity for anyone,” said Cordeiro. “Kings MMA is like an all-teams sister. Those athletes with the spirit of hard-working group mentality are welcome. This is the methodology that is helping us to grow. In that way, Kings MMA’s doors will always be open to Shogun, but I don’t have time to think about him as I need to get Wanderlei Silva prepared.”

Silva is slated to meet Cung Le (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Cung-Le-14883) on the UFC 139 undercard, where “The Axe Murderer” will attempt to rebound from a crushing, 27-second July loss to Chris Leben (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Chris-Leben-6258). Cordeiro believes the former Pride middleweight champion will rise above the bad moment and put on a show against Le.

“He’s devoting so much of himself in training,” the Kings leader guaranteed. “It’s great to see him like that, motivated to overcome. I’m enjoying this hard work. He wants to get there prepared. Cung Le has an interesting game plan for him. He just fights on his feet, and that makes him much easier to study. Wanderlei accepted this invitation with pleasure and will make Le pay for his sacrifice in a brutal way.”

After Reshuffling, UFC 139 Spike Prelims to Feature Bader vs. Brilz, McDonald vs. Soto

The UFC 139 preliminary fights on Spike have been reshuffled, with a bantamweight bout pitting Michael McDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/mcdonald/1007/) against Alex Soto moved into the two-fight showcase.

It had been previously reported that a middleweight encounter between Chris Weidman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/weidman/1769/) and Tom Lawlor (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tom/lawlor/467/) would be included, but on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour, Lawlor said that information was incorrect, and a Spike representative confirmed to MMA Fighting that the fight would not be aired.

No reason was given for the change on the one-hour telecast, which is also set to feature Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/) against Jason Brilz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jason/brilz/227/).

McDonald is considered to be one of the bantamweight division's top prospects. Just 20 years old, he's already competed 14 times as a pro, holding a 13-1 record. He's 3-0 under the Zuffa banner, most recently defeating Chris Cariaso (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/cariaso/1253/) in a split decision back at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 130. Soto, meanwhile, will be making his major MMA debut. He's 6-0-1 in his carer.

The Bader-Brilz bout features two fighters in need of a win, as both come into the event on two-fight losing streaks.

Meanwhile, Weidman vs. Lawlor will air live on Facebook.com.

UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) will emanate from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California with a main event of Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mauricio/rua/457/). The five-round main card will air on pay-per-view.

Tom Lawlor Thinks Experience Will Take Him Past Chris Weidman at UFC 139

More than a year since his last time out in the Octagon, Tom Lawlor (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tom/lawlor/467/) is finally healthy and ready to return at Saturday's UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/). Waiting across the way from him when he walks into the middle of the HP Pavilion will be Chris Weidman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/weidman/1769/), a fast-rising prospect who is unbeaten and has won both of his bouts since signing with the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) earlier this year.

For Lawlor, the matchup came as no surprise. Before Weidman was ever in the UFC, he made Lawlor's radar after defeating his friend James Brasco in a submission grappling match at 2009. With Weidman in the nascent stages of his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career at the time, it was a clear stretch he was going to be a player on the world middleweight scene.

Just six fights into his career, Weidman will be at a disadvantage from an experience standpoint. With Lawlor having more time under his belt, he thinks that's the advantage that will send him to victory.

"He's impressive, but kind of like me, he's still pretty young in his career," Lawlor said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I have double the amount of fights he does. He only has six fights. So there's a lot of things he hasn't experienced and I think I'm going to be able to exploit some of that."

Weidman is a former two-time collegiate wrestling All-American, and has landed six of his nine takedown attempts fighting in the UFC. Many feel that advantage gives Weidman the edge going into the fight.

In training for this bout, Lawlor traveled to Temecula, California to work for the last several weeks with Team Quest, a camp renowned for its wrestlers. While Lawlor says that wasn't the sole reason for his work on the west coast, it will certainly come as a benefit.

"This isn't a wrestling match," he said. "This is a fight, or I'll turn it into a fight. If it was a wrestling match, my money would be on him. But it's not a wrestling match, it's a fight ... If I was a betting man, I would bet on myself."

For Lawlor, his performance usually starts at the weigh-ins, where he's notorious for his appearances, usually coming out dressed as a character from MMA's past. Among his recent stage entries were Dan Severn (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/severn/5/), Harold Howard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/harold/howard/4/) and the "Just Bleed" guy from UFC 1.

With 13 months to ponder his next time in front of the audience, Lawlor has something planned for UFC 139, and it's something big.

"Unless they stop me right before I go out there, it's going to be really good," he said. "It might top all the past things that I've done and that's saying a lot. I get a lot comments on the Dan Severn thing, I get a lot of comments from real hardcore fans on the 'Just Bleed' guy. But I really think this will take the cake. It's going to set a new standard for weigh-ins."

For Stephan Bonnar, Fight of the Night Is Only Part of the Strategy

Stephan Bonnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/stephan/bonnar/297/) wanted a name opponent for his return to the cage this year, but what he was offered instead was rising star Kyle Kingsbury (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kyle/kingsbury/472/). And although Kingsbury might be a tad lacking in star power, there was an appeal.

"I was content with [Kingsbury as an opponent] just cause of the fact he's got a couple Fight of the Night bonuses," Bonnar said with a laugh on Monday's The MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Hour. "And that evens it out. I think our chances of getting a bonus are pretty good."

Bonnar, who meets Kingsbury this Saturday at UFC 139, says his Fight of the Night chase isn't all about the paper. Bonnar feels he has the advantage on the ground and an early brawl is part of the strategy.

"I know I say it in a way that I'm going to be stupid and reckless," he said. "But if I went out there like, 'I think I have a better submission, I'm just going to take him down and submit him,' I think it would be harder than if we slug it out first. Both of us landing some shots. I think that will help open up the submission a little better."

In his last fight, Bonnar said he should have tried to soften up Igor Pokrajac (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/igor/pokrajac/966/) before taking the fight to the mat. Sticking to a ground-centric effort, Bonnar wasn't able to submit Pokrajac, but did enough for a unanimous decision.

It's been almost a year since that fight due to injuries and poor timing. While "time flies" as he commented, he's also been busy during the stretch with his broadcasting duties and his "Punch Buddies" tees (http://www.ngaugeinc.com/), formerly "Trash Talkin' Kids" (name changed for legal reasons). Bonnar saw the T-shirt line as a creative outlet.

"it wasn't so much as setting myself up for later," Bonnar said. "It's about, man, I wanted to use my brain a little more than something other than a punching bag."

Last Saturday, Bonnar joined Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/) and Jay Glazer in the handling of the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX pre and post-fight show on FUEL. Bonnar has done commentary for Versus shows and has been a guest analyst on MMA Live on ESPN. As an on-air talent, the TUF 1 icon will have no trouble finding a way to stay involved in the sport once his in-ring career is over. Not that he still doesn't have quite a few fights left in him.

"I've been doing this for 10 years," the 34-year-old said. "I haven't really put an exact date. It takes toll on you. I'm not getting any younger, guys are getting better. I'd say no more than five years if that."

UFC 139 Predictions

Will Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) make a statement in his return to the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) that he deserves to contend for the light heavyweight belt? Or will Shogun Rua beat Henderson and make a case that he should get another crack at Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/)? Can Cung Le (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cung/le/1001/) thrill the fans in his UFC debut, or will Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/wanderlei/silva/275/) pick up a much-needed win? Will Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/) or Brian Bowles (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/bowles/958/) take a big step toward a rematch with bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/)?

We'll examine those questions and more as we predict the winners of Saturday night's UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) pay-per-view.

What: UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson

When: Saturday, the Facebook preliminary fights start at 6 p.m. ET, the Spike card starts at 8 and the pay-per-view starts at 9.

Where: HP Pavilion, San Jose

Predictions on the five pay-per-view fights below.

Maurício "Shogun" Rua vs. Dan Henderson
Henderson left Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) and its light heavyweight belt behind after beating Fedor Emelianenko, and now he'll try to prove that he deserves a shot at the UFC light heavyweight championship. If he beats Rua, he'd have an excellent case that he deserves to challenge the winner of the upcoming Jones-Lyoto Machida light heavyweight title fight, although Rashad Evans has been waiting for a light heavyweight title shot for a long time, so Henderson may have to get in line.

However, I think it's going to be a moot point, because I think Rua has the right striking style to frustrate Henderson standing up, and I think he'll be just good enough on the ground to avoid getting controlled on the canvas by Henderson, who's a vastly superior wrestler. I like Shogun to win an action-packed fight by decision.
Pick: Rua

Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le
I've always enjoyed the aesthetic beauty of Le's san shou style of striking, but I've never believed it would be effective against a top-notch opponent. And so I think the result of this fight hangs mostly on whether Silva is, at this point in his career, even close to "top-notch" anymore.

So is he? Based on the way the Axe Murderer looked against Chris Leben, I'd have to say no: Silva buckled the first time he was hit hard and was knocked out in just 27 seconds. Silva is 2-6 in his last eight fights, and four of those six losses have been ugly knockouts, and so I'm going to lean toward Le to win this one, just because I think Silva has taken so much damage through his spectacular career that he just doesn't have a lot left.
Pick: Le

Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles
Faber is another fighter who has had a long and spectacular career but has begun to decline lately: He was 21-1 in his first 22 fights, but has gone just 4-4 in his last eight. However, Faber's only losses have been to featherweight and bantamweight champions, and he has looked awfully good while winning, too. Bowles is a terrific fighter who has bounced back from serious hand and foot injuries to win two in a row, but Faber has such good wrestling and such a diverse style of striking that he should be able to dictate where the fight goes and win a decision.
Pick: Faber

Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story
This is a very interesting fight between two guys who are right on the cusp of the welterweight Top 10 but who are coming off disappointing losses. Story's wrestling might just be enough for him to control Kampmann for 15 minutes and win a decision, but Kampmann has more ways to win, with a good striking game and varied submissions.
Pick: Kampmann

Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kingsbury
This isn't a great matchup -- neither of these guys is even close to the top of the light heavyweight division -- but it does have the potential to be an entertaining brawl. Bonnar is a fan favorite riding a two-fight winning streak, but Kingsbury is a better technical striker and should beat Bonnar.
Pick: Kingsbury

Ten Years Later, Shogun Looks to Avenge Brother's Loss to Henderson

On November 3, 2001, the fans at the Tokyo Dome were treated to a great fight between Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) and Murilo "Ninja" Rua (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/MuriloNinjaRua/) at Pride 17. A decade later, Henderson will take on Ninja's little brother Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/).

And just because it's been 10 full years since the Henderson-Rua fight, that doesn't mean Shogun has forgotten. In fact, Shogun said on Wednesday that he's been motivated during his preparation for the fight with Henderson to avenge his big brother's split decision loss to Henderson from the Pride days.

And Rua said that watching and re-watching that fight, and discussing the fight with his brother, has helped him to formulate his game plan for his own bout with Henderson.

"Certainly that was a great fight," Shogun said. "I watched that fight between my brother and Henderson a number of times. It was a very competitive fight. My brother is one of the people who helped me a lot with my strategy for Dan. I hope to impose my game plan, knowing it's going to be a tough fight with a great fighter. That was a great fight and I have good memories of it."

Henderson has even better memories, because he won -- but only after a brutal battle, and only by split decision. Henderson said he expects a similarly difficult time fighting against the younger Rua.

"It was a tough fight," Henderson said. "It was a war and I would expect the same from his brother."

If the Henderson-Shogun fight is as good as the Henderson-Ninja fight, the fans will be the winners.

Wanderlei Silva Isn't Ready to Go Now, but Will He Ever Be?

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The old Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/wanderlei/silva/275/) is still in there somewhere. You know he is. You catch glimpses, like the shadow of the famous tattoo on the back of his head, now just barely showing through his hair. You see his old face lurking there just beneath the taut mask of his new one, and you know.

He knows you, too. Better than you think. He knows what you've been saying about him. He knows you wanted him to quit after he got knocked out by Chris Leben (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/leben/414/) in his last fight. He also knows you said it out of love and a genuine sense of compassion, and he's not mad at you, even if you just don't get it.

"After that last fight," Silva said, "it's normal."

In other words, when he gets knocked out he fully expects the criticism and the retirement talk to start up again. But he's not ready to go just yet, no matter what you or Dana White or even his peers say about it.

Ask Silva why he's still getting in the cage at 35, now that he doesn't need the fame or the money anymore, and he'll tell you that it's simple: he just wants to show us all that he can still fight.

"I don't know how long, but I can do it right now," he said.

And the knockouts? The increasing frequency with which he's ended his nights asleep on the mat? The fights he has no memory of beyond one or two good blows? He takes worse than that in sparring, he said, as if that's supposed to be somehow encouraging. Besides, the doctors look at him before and after every fight, and they tell him his brain is fine, he insisted.

"I think the punches make me more smart," he joked. "They shake my head up."

But it's not a laughing matter to anyone else. Not to UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White, who says he could still make money by putting weathered old fighters like Silva and Chuck Liddell (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chuck/liddell/113/) into one brain-damaging brawl after another at the end of their careers, but "I don't want to make one dollar of that kind of money."

Not to former foe Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/), who himself added to Silva's knockout total when he starched him back in 2007 -- the second outright KO he'd suffered in a year's time inside the Pride ring.

"I think his ability to take a punch has gone down," Henderson said of Silva at Wednesday's open workouts. "His chin isn't there anymore, and with his style it's not conducive to winning fights if you're going to go out there and bang with guys and you can't take a punch. It's unfortunate. I was a big fan of his as well, and I loved watching him fight. But that happens I think to a lot of guys with that style -- Chuck [Liddell] is the same way, that's his style too. There just comes a time when you've got to realize that."

Even Cung Le (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cung/le/1001/), Silva's opponent at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) on Saturday night, agreed that the hits have taken their toll on "The Axe Murderer."

"It's true. You take a lot of damage and it adds up," said Le. "But I don't know. Some fighters, they pull another fight out of their back pocket and they rise to the occasion."

Obviously, that's what Silva is hoping for on Saturday night, but his aspirations don't end there. His fans might be hoping that he can win one last battle and then ride off into the sunset, but he's not. To hear him tell it, he's nowhere near done -- and that's the scary part.

"My dream is, I start my career right now, because right now is another moment in this sport," said Silva. "This sport is so big. I hope I'm still fighting for a couple more years."

And sure, he's had a great run. From when he first knocked out a teenage Muay Thai champion in a tournament in Brazil when he was 15, to the wars he waged in the Pride ring, he's been to the mountaintop and back several times by now. Can't he just be content with that, people wonder. Doesn't he know that he has nothing left to prove in this sport?

The answer seems to be: not really. Because the people who make that claim are usually the same people who, with their very next breath, tell him he can't do this anymore. And that's what he's trying to prove, Silva said. That those people are wrong. That he has not just one good fight, but several left in him.

"I have a great career," he said. "I fought with the best guys in the world. I feel good about what I did in the past, but I know I can do better. I can still fight. I can be competitive right now."

And if he can't? If he steps into the cage with Le and ends up watching the ending on a big screen after the fact? What then?

Don't expect him to doff his cap and announce that he's had enough. Within the Silva camp, no one appears to be even considering that option. Of course, they assume he's going to win, but even if he doesn't get 'em this time, he'll get 'em next time, said longtime trainer Rafael Cordeiro.

"His last fight, he was ready. He was. But now, I think it's Wanderlei's moment."

This is part of the problem. Because you can't simultaneously prepare for victory while also preparing for the consequences of defeat. And after spending your entire adult life pursuing one goal, you can't give it up just because of one bad night. If you were the kind of person who could do that, you'd never have gotten here in the first place.

But the end is coming, as it comes for every fighter. Somewhere in that brain that has, by Silva's reckoning, benefited from one good shaking after another, he knows this. He's just doesn't see any reason why the end has to come right now. Not that he'll be any more ready in six months, or maybe even a year. Which makes you wonder: what's it going to take? How will he recognize the end for what it is?

"Good question," he said, after a pause. "In the moment, we're going to know."

And sometimes, sure, that's the way it works. You see the exit coming and you know when to get off. Other times you find out later, when you see it in the rearview mirror. Then it only gets farther and farther away as you plow forward, trying to make up your mind about what to do next.

Urijah Faber Says Dan Henderson's a 'Unique Cat,' While Hendo Says Very Little

Maybe someone should tell Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) that he's about to headline one of the better UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) pay-per-views of 2011.

While they're at it, maybe they should also tell him that the match-up is kind of a big deal to the fans who always wanted to see Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/MauricioShogunRua/) mix it up back when they were both in Japan's Pride organization, and if he wins there just might be a title shot in it for him.

Not that I expect it would make much of a difference to him, nor would it generate any outward displays of enthusiasm, but it might be nice just to know that he knows it.

If you weren't already used to his sleepy pre-fight demeanor, you might have been forgiven for mistaking his laconic performance at the UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) press conference on Thursday afternoon for disinterest.

Again though, that's only if you didn't know the guy. It's only if you weren't familiar enough with his sense of humor to recognize that, when asked about the differences between training for a three-round fight and a five-round fight, he was just trying to have a little fun by replying, "The difference is two rounds."

You'd also have to know him well enough to know that, when he deflected talk about getting back into a title shot, suggesting that the winner of his fight with Rua might not be deserving of a crack at the champ if it ends up being "a boring fight and not a whole lot happens," he wasn't trying to be difficult so much as honest.

After all, this is the same man who, at Wednesday's open workouts, insisted that he'd never actually been all that passionate about pursuing a rematch with middleweight champ Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/), and that, sure, he wouldn't mind winning a UFC title, since that was "definitely on the goal list."

Maybe that's just what happens when you're a 41-year-old fighter with more than 14 years in the sport, and you've won big fights in every major organization. Maybe you show up to press conferences in a little conference room on the edge of the San Francisco Bay, and you still can't get too terribly worked up about the man you're about to fight in a cage just two days from now.

Fortunately for us, UFC bantamweight Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/) was there to tell us a story about Hendo -- a story that told us more about Hendo than Hendo would likely ever tell us about himself.

As Faber told it, he was a former wrestler in his first couple weeks of MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) training, and he ended up on the mat with Henderson during a training session in a Sacramento gym.

"I was just going in there, going for the kill, and of course I went against a guy who's another great wrestler and bigger and more experienced and everything and he was just killing me and he was like, 'Man, don't you know any jiu-jitsu?'"

The answer, Faber said, was "not really," which only earned him a shaming from Henderson, who pointed out that another smaller fighter, Javier Vazquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/javier/vazquez/1093/), was able to hang with him thanks to his jiu-jitsu skills. The message was clear enough to Faber, who said he also started asking around about Henderson's training regimen because "I was trying to get a feel for how the best guys did things."

"I was asking his training partner how much he runs, and he said, 'Dan hasn't ran in 13 years,'" Faber said, before recounting a story about the year Henderson spent "partying" instead of training, only to then enter and win a national wrestling tournament.

"This guy's a unique cat," said Faber. "He's like a pirate or something."

Here's where you naturally pan to Henderson himself, looking for a reaction, briefly forgetting who you're dealing with.

"I guess I got no comment about that," he replied.

Of course not. Why would he? When you've got exploits like Henderson's, both in the cage and out, you don't have to talk about them. You can let others do it for you.

Army Vet and Dolphin Trainer Alex Soto Faces Tough Debut at UFC 139

Alex Soto (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/AlexSoto/) still isn't completely sure what went wrong in his Ultimate Fighter audition. At the time it seemed like he'd done everything right.

"I went there, tried out, did everything good," he said. "I grappled in front of Dana White, Joe Silva, and made it to the next phase, hitting the mitts. I made it all the way to the interview process, but I never heard anything back."

Maybe it was the interview, he thought later. He was in the middle of a weight cut for a fight he had later that same week, so maybe his personality didn't shine the way it could have. Then again, Soto's coach, Manny Hernandez, has his own theory.

"It was the beard," said Hernandez.

To hear Hernandez tell it, this wasn't just some scruff from a few days of not shaving. It started just below Soto's eyes and only got worse from there.

"Me, his manager, his coaches, we all said, 'What's with the beard Teen Wolf?'"

Okay, Soto can admit now, the beard didn't help. That's part of why he shaved it. But even though he didn't make it on TUF, things worked out when the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) needed a late replacement to take on Michael McDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/mcdonald/1007/) at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) and Soto just happened to be in top shape since he was already preparing for a local fight on that same night. Even on 12 days' notice, he couldn't turn down the chance to get in the UFC.

Now Soto finds himself facing one of the organization's top young bantamweight talents on the Spike TV prelim portion of the card, and the UFC officially has its first professional dolphin trainer under contract.

No, that's not a typo.

In addition to his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career, Soto currently works for the U.S. Navy training dolphins. It's a career path he got into after working as a diver at Sea World, where he initially cleaned tanks. When the park was looking for an employee adventurous enough to get in the water and work with the animals, it found one in Soto, who's always up for a thrill.

For instance, consider his early experiences with MMA. After taking what he thought would be a pretty standard bout in Tijuana, with gloves and shinpads for extra protection, he got word that, actually, not everybody had shinpads. Or gloves, for that matter. And oh yeah, this bare-knuckle fight was in a nightclub.

"So turns out it was just a straight-up brawl," said Soto. "It was a great experience. I don't think I'd do it again, but it was a great way to start my career."

For the 27-year-old Soto, that trip to Tijuana was actually something of a homecoming. He was born in the border town, and lived there until he was 12, when his family immigrated to the U.S.

Soto was in high school during the terrorist attack on 9/11, and that event made him feel like he had to do something to defend his adopted homeland, he said. So right out of high school he joined the Army. Before he knew it, he was shipping off to Afghanistan.

"I remember how I felt on 9/11," said Soto. "It was a scary feeling. It was, you know, terrorizing. And that's what I thought about when I went to Afghanistan was, the way that I felt that day, I want to do something about it."

Soto was deployed with the 25th Infantry's Long-Range Surveillance Detachment -- a special unit that he was motivated to join largely because it was supposed to be difficult to get into.

"I'm always looking for adventure," he explained. "It was a tryout where they put us through hell for about three months, and I made the team."

When Soto came back home, he began to turn his focus toward an MMA career with the help of Hernandez and the rest of San Diego's Team Hurricane Awesome. That puts him in regular sparring sessions with Strikeforce 135-pounder Liz Carmouche (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/07/20/for-openly-gay-fighter-liz-carmouche-mma-offered-open-arms-and/), who Soto jokes is just one of the bigger fighters he has to face on a regular basis, now that she's "put on a few pounds" between fights.

"We go hard," Soto said. "We don't take it easy on each other."

He'll need the benefit of those training sessions against McDonald, who at just 20 years old is considered to be one of the UFC's future stars at bantamweight. Maybe it's his status as a rising contender, or maybe it's the fact that Soto took the fight on less than two weeks' notice, but oddsmakers seem to like McDonald's chances, tabbing him a 5-1 favorite on Saturday night.

That's alright with Soto, and with Hernandez, who said he was "ecstatic" when his fighter got the call for what many expect to be a rough entrance into the UFC.

"Whatever's meant to happen will happen," said Hernandez, who recounted telling Soto when he first joined the gym that he could go as far with MMA as he wanted to. Soto still remembers that day well, he said. At least so far, Hernandez's words have proved true. After all, he did start out in a bare-knuckle fight in a Tijuana nightclub.

"Now I'm here in the UFC," Soto said. "The biggest stage in the world."

From Afghanistan to the dolphin tank, Soto's already led an uncommonly interestingly life. Now the next chapter is set to begin on live TV. Whatever happens, at least this time an ill-advised beard won't be to blame.

UFC 139 Weigh-In Results

The UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC139/) fighters took to the scale to make it official at the HP Pavilion on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't exactly smooth sailing all the way.

There was trouble early when several fighters missed weight, some badly, and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan claimed that there was a discrepancy between the California State Athletic Commission's scale and the one fighters had been using to check their weight backstage. The problems were mostly confined to the first few fighters to weigh in, however, with those higher up on the card clocking in on the mark with no apparent problems.

Just to make things more interesting, middleweight Tom Lawlor did his best Steven Seagal impression on his way to the scale, and things got a tad physical on the stage when Rick Story got too close for Martin Kampmann's liking. All in all, an interesting day on the scales in San Jose.

Full weigh-in results are below.

Main card (pay-per-view)

Dan Henderson (203) vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (205)
Wanderlei Silva (185) vs. Cung Le (185)

Ryan Bader vs. Jason Brilz
Michael McDonald vs. Alex Soto
Tom Lawlor vs. Chris Weidman
Nick Pace vs. Miguel Torres

In San Jose, UFC Benefits From Groundwork Laid by Strikeforce

At least for local MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) fans, the HP Pavilion might as well be the house that Scott Coker built. Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) held its first event here in March of 2006 -- the first sanctioned MMA event in the state of California -- and both the venue and the city served as its home base for the next five years.

That's why it felt a little odd to walk into the HP Pavilion for Friday afternoon's weigh-ins and see the UFC's logo splashed around the arena. This was where Fabricio Werdum (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fabricio/werdum/308/) upset Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/). It's where Gina Carano (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gina/carano/1193/) and "Cyborg" Santos became the first women to headline a major MMA event.

And now, with Strikeforce firmly under Zuffa control, it's the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) that's reaping the rewards of a vibrant market full of passionate fight fans.

For Cung Le (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cung/le/1001/), it seems especially strange. The hometown favorite has yet to fight in an MMA bout outside of San Jose, and his contest with Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/wanderlei/silva/275/) at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) will mark the first time he's set foot in a cage that didn't belong to Strikeforce.

"I'm trying not to think about it," he said earlier this week, adding that it was "an honor to be in the UFC."

Le made his MMA debut at that first Strikeforce event, knocking out Mike Altman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/altman/1211/) in the first round in front of what was, for the U.S. at the time, a massive MMA crowd of more than 18,000 fans.

For Coker, you might think it would be a little bittersweet to see his old friend now working for his former rivals, but speaking to MMA Fighting from Las Vegas (where he's attending Friday night's Strikeforce: Challengers show) the San Jose native insisted he was genuinely happy for Le.

"I'm excited for him," said Coker. "I think it's a big fight, and I'm not just saying that."

The way Coker sees it, the success of combat sports in the Bay Area -- from the early days of his kickboxing promotion to Strikeforce's warm reception there as an MMA promotion -- has a pretty simple explanation.

"It wasn't until the '50s and '60s and '70s that a lot of the martial arts instructors started moving to America," he said. "...Before that, very few people did martial arts in America. What happened was, when the martial artists came over to America, most of them settled in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Seattle, because those were the ports of entry. That's why when you look at the Bay Area, you know, I remember at one point counting about 80 [martial arts] schools just in the South Bay part of the Bay Area."

The success of local fighters, such as the American Kickboxing Academy's stable of top talent, has helped maintain local interest in the sport over the years, but the UFC has historically shied away from promoting events in the area. It brought UFC 117 to Oakland last summer, but San Jose has always been Strikeforce's stomping grounds.

Until now, of course.

So now that Zuffa owns his promotion and the UFC is moving into the building where some of the greatest moments of his professional life took place, what will it be like for Coker when he flies back to San Jose on Saturday and walks into the HP Pavilion to watch a fight there as a spectator? At least for now, even he isn't quite sure, he said.

"We're all one family now. But to me, how is it going to feel to walk into the HP Pavilion [for a fight] and have it not be Strikeforce? I'll be able to answer that when I walk in there. I really don't know yet."
