UFC 136 is an upcoming mixed martial arts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts) event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Fighting_Championship). While not officially announced by the organization, it is expected to take place on October 8, 2011, at the Toyota Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Center_(Houston)) in Houston, Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston,_Texas). The event will also coincide with a two day UFC Fan Expo to be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_R._Brown_Convention_Center).
Background

A UFC Lightweight Championship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Lightweight_Championship) rematch between Frankie Edgar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankie_Edgar) and Gray Maynard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Maynard) is expected to headline this event.
A bout between Jose Aldo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_Aldo) and Kenny Florian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Florian) for the UFC Featherweight Championship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Featherweight_Championship) is expected to take place at this event.

Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago Set for UFC 136

Brazilian UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) middleweights Demian Maia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demian/maia/326/) and Jorge Santiago (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jorge/santiago/401/) have agreed to face off in October.

Maia confirmed the matchup to Brazilian news site Esporte.Ig.com (http://esporte.ig.com.br/lutas/demian+maia+fara+duelo+brasileiro+contra+santiago+ no+ufc+136/n1597081891495.html), and though the UFC has yet to officially announce it, a source told MMA Fighting that the report is correct.

The meeting will come during the rapidly filling UFC 136 fight card in Houston's Toyota Center, and both fighters will be looking to bounce back from recent losses.

Maia (14-3) had a two-fight win streak snapped at June's UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+131/), losing via unanimous decision to Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/). Santiago, meanwhile, fell in his UFC debut in May, losing in a second-round TKO to Brian Stann (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/stann/667/).

Prior to that, Santiago (23-9) had won 11 of his last 12 fights.

Several additions to the UFC 136 card have been added over the last few days, including a heavyweight match between Dave Herman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dave/herman/1800/) and Mike Russow (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/russow/821/) and a featherweight bout with Josh Grispi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/josh/grispi/1084/) and Matt Grice (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/matt/grice/446/).

As of now, however, the event has no headlining act.

Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard Agree to Meet for a Third Time at UFC 136

Frankie Edgar (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/FrankieEdgar/) and Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/GrayMaynard/) have verbally agreed to meet for a third time at UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC136/) in Houston, sources close to the event confirmed with MMA Fighting.

The long-awaited trilogy fight was supposed to take place at UFC 130 in May, but injuries suffered by both the champion Edgar and Maynard forced the UFC to delay the lightweight title fight.

Maynard handed Edgar the only loss of his career in April 2008. They met again in January, this time under different circumstances with Edgar as champion, but the UFC 125 rematch ended in a draw. That fight is considered by many to be the current front-runner for 2011 Fight of the Year.

A nagging back injury (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/05/16/frankie-edgar-discusses-injury-that-forced-him-out-of-ufc-130/) forced Edgar (13-1-1) to pull out of the UFC 130, while a lingering knee injury (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/05/24/gray-maynard-talks-ufc-130-withdrawal-anthony-pettis-and-more/) sidelined Maynard.

UFC 136 is scheduled to take place on Oct. 8 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. The co-main event is expected to be Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann.

Jose Aldo Defends Featherweight Title Vs. Kenny Florian at UFC 136

Someone at the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) office must have marked July 15 as "Fight Announcement Day" on the calendar.

After several major fight bookings were announced on Friday, the promotion added one more big one for UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC136/) – a featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) and Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/). The UFC made the announcement on its official website.

UFC 136 will take place Oct. 8 in Houston, the UFC's second trip to the nation's fourth-largest city. The pay-per-view event will be headlined by a lightweight title trilogy rematch between champion Frankie Edgar (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/FrankieEdgar/) and Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/), a fight booking first reported Friday by MMA Fighting (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/07/15/frankie-edgar-gray-maynard-agree-to-meet-for-a-third-time-at-uf/).

Aldo (19-1, 1-0 UFC) will be defending his featherweight belt for the fourth time and second time as a UFC fighter after the WEC merged with the promotion at the start of this year. In April at UFC 129 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC129/), Aldo beat Mark Hominick (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/hominick/578/) by unanimous decision to retain the title. In the WEC, after beating Mike Brown (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/brown/627/) in November 2009 to win the belt, Aldo beat former champ Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/) and Manny Gamburyan (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/MannyGamburyan/) in title defenses.

Aldo had been set for a title defense against Chad Mendes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chad/mendes/1484/) at UFC 133 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+133/) next month in Philadelphia. But because of various injuries, Aldo was forced to delay his return to the cage. Mendes elected to stay busy and took a fight with Rani Yahya (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rani/yahya/1044/) on the same card – where a win would likely make him next in line after Florian.

Florian (15-5, 12-4 UFC) will fight for just the second time at featherweight after moving down from a five-year stint at lightweight. The 145-pound division is Florian's fourth weight class in the UFC. He began his career in the promotion at middleweight on Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter" before moving to welterweight for two fights, then a long run at 155 pounds that included two title challenges – losses to Sean Sherk and BJ Penn.

Last month at UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC131/), Florian made his featherweight debut, outpointing Diego Nunes by unanimous decision. After that fight, UFC president Dana White (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/DanaWhite/) said Florian was likely next in line to challenge for Aldo's title.

UFC 136, which will be accompanied by a lead-in UFC Fan Expo, now features the two title fights; a middleweight bout between surging contender Brian Stann and former title challenger Chael Sonnen, fighting for the first time since his recent suspension; and, announced in the last 24 hours, fights between Dave "Pee Wee" Herman-Mike Russow, Demian Maia-Jorge Santiago, Joe Lauzon-Melvin Guillard and Josh Grispi-Matt Grice.

Anthony Pettis-Jeremy Stephens Latest Addition to UFC 136 in Houston

The Houston hits just keep on coming. A bout between final WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/pettis/1069/) and Jeremy Stephens (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jeremy/stephens/545/) has been added to UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC136/).

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC/) announced the matchup Saturday for its Oct. 8 card, which will take place in Houston, coinciding with a UFC Fan Expo (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFCFanExpo/) on Oct. 7-8.

The fight is the latest in a slew of recent fight announcements the UFC has made for the show, which will be its second trip to the nation's fourth largest city. The UFC last visited Houston for UFC 69 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC69/) in April 2007.

Pettis (13-2, 0-1 UFC) will be looking to rebound after some bad luck, followed by the end of a four-fight winning streak. Pettis, as the last WEC (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/WEC/) lightweight champ following that promotion's merger with the UFC, was expected to face the winner of the Jan. 1 fight between champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/). When that fight ended in a draw, a rematch was ordered (one that will, coincidentally, happen at UFC 136 in the main event) – and Pettis was left in the cold. He took a fight with Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) at the Season 13 Finale of "The Ultimate Fighter," and was outwrestled en route to a 30-27 sweep on the judges' scorecards for Guida.

Prior to that fight, Pettis went 4-0 in 2010, including his win over Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) to claim the WEC title at the promotion's swan song event in December. That fight included his now-famous flying kick off the cage in the fifth round – "the kick heard 'round the world." Three of his four wins in 2010 won fight-night bonus awards.

Stephens (20-6, 7-5 UFC) has started to surge upward in the lightweight division in 2011 with a Knockout of the Night win over Marcus Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/marcus/davis/185/) at UFC 125 and a unanimous decision win over Danny Downes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/danny/downes/1559/) at the TUF 13 Finale in June. Last September, he lost a close split decision to Melvin Guillard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/melvin/guillard/501/) at UFC 119, his only loss in the last two years.

Stephens, an Iowa native, has four UFC fight-night bonuses in his career. Against Pettis, he will be facing his second consecutive Duke Roufus-trained fighter. Downes also is a product of the Roufusport school in Milwaukee.

UFC 136 features the main-event lightweight title trilogy rematch between Edgar and Maynard, plus a co-main event featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) and new featherweight Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/KennyFlorian/). In addition, the card features middleweight clashes between Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/ChaelSonnen/) and Brian Stann (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/BrianStann/) and Demian Maia-Jorge Santiago, plus a lightweight bout between Guillard and Joe Lauzon. The star power already on the card means the Pettis-Stephens fight is likely to end up on the preliminary card.

Joey Beltran to Face Acclaimed Newcomer Stipe Miocic at UFC 136

Fresh off snapping his two-fight losing streak with a win at UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+131/), Joey Beltran (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/joey/beltran/1203/) will go for two in a row when he takes on UFC newcomer Stipe Miocic at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 136.

The promotion confirmed the fight's booking on Wednesday.

The aggressive Beltran had dropped consecutive decisions to Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/matt/mitrione/1163/) before rebounding with a third-round TKO over Aaron Rosa (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/aaron/rosa/1377/) in June. The victory made Beltran 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the UFC.

Miocic is thought by many to be an excellent prospect, with a background in wrestling from his days as an NCAA Division I competitor, as well as a boxing background as a Golden Gloves fighter.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder is unbeaten in six pro fights, with all six wins coming via finish (five knockouts, one submission).

UFC 136 will take place on October 8 from the Toyota Center in Houston.

Nam Phan Replaces Josh Grispi at UFC 136

One featherweight in dire need of a win will take over for another in similar standing.

Nam Phan (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nam/phan/1243/) will look to end a two-fight losing streak in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) when he steps in as a replacement to faceMatt Grice (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/matt/grice/446/) at UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/) on Oct. 8 in Houston, Texas, the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) has announced.

Grice's originally scheduled opponent Josh Grispi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/josh/grispi/1084/) recently withdrew from the preliminary bout. Entering the UFC earlier this year as a No. 1 contender for Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/)'s belt, Grispi has since lost both his UFC fights to Dustin Poirier (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dustin/poirier/1595/) and George Roop (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/george/roop/454/).

Phan (16-9) is looking to hold onto his spot on the roster after falling to Leonard Garcia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/leonard/garcia/384/) in a highly controversial decision and losing last weekend against Mike Brown (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/brown/627/). He's a mainstay in the California MMA scene and is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu standout.

Grice (13-4) returned to the UFC in June and lost via first-round TKO to Ricardo Lamas (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ricardo/lamas/1054/). In his previous stint with the UFC, Grice compiled a 1-3 record from April 2007 through July 2009. This UFC 136 fight will be the former University of Oklahoma wrestler's second try at 145 pounds.

UFC 136 features a stacked card with two championships on the line; Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/) and Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) vs. Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/). The main card will also be filled out by Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/) vs. Brian Stann (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/stann/667/), Mike Russow (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/russow/821/) vs. Dave Herman and Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon.

Clay Guida in No Rush for UFC Title Shot, Says Jim Miller Is Top Contender

MILWAUKEE – The logjam in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) lightweight division thanks to the Frankie Edgar (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/FrankieEdgar/)-Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/) draw has been far-reaching.

Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) knows plenty about it. He's been on one of the division's best tears, with four straight wins. But if he wants a title shot, he's got to wait until the dust finally settles.

After dismantling Anthony Pettis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/pettis/1069/) in June, Guida positioned himself for a possible title shot. But he believes Jim Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jim/miller/509/) is ahead of him in line, and he has no problem waiting for his moment to come.

"Jim Miller is the frontrunner, and maybe Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) – we'll see what happens tomorrow night," Guida said Saturday during a fan Q&A in Milwaukee. "I'm not in a rush. I'll be (in the UFC) five years in October. When the time comes, we'll be ready and it'll be the most exciting lightweight title fight you've ever seen."

Miller and Henderson fight in the co-main event of UFC on Versus 5 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/ufc+on+versus+5/) in Milwaukee on Sunday. Miller's seven-fight lightweight winning streak has him likely next in line for the Edgar-Maynard winner, but a Henderson upset could throw a wrench in the works – and could open the door for Guida.

Guida said he does not yet have his next fight booked – perhaps a strategic move on the UFC's part, waiting to see what happens between Miller and Henderson.

But Guida has no qualms with saying Miller is ahead of him in line – even though Miller hasn't been named the official next title challenger yet.

"Jim Miller's just been a wrecking ball," Guida said. "He ran through Kamal Shalorus (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kamal/shalorus/1158/), which I thought would be his toughest test. It's an interesting matchup. I've won four in a row, but right now Jim Miller is the frontrunner for next contender. But don't sell Ben Henderson short. He's a gamer."

Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and division number one contender Gray Maynard square off at the UFC 136 press conference held today in Houston, Texas, in advance of their Oct. 8 showdown.

After the jump is the staredown between Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian.

http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/687146/Aldo-Florian_staredown_medium.jpg

Frankie Edgar: I'm sure we're both highly motivated coming off a draw. We'll both bring it.
Gray Maynard: Since January 1st, this has been on my mind every day and every night. I trained hard and I want that day to come.

Kenny Florian: It was especially difficult dropping down because of my injury. I expect the weight cut to be that much easier this time. I could have fought five more rounds after my last fight and i'll be ready on October 8th.
Jose Aldo: I'm working in camp to come back stronger than ever. I've been questioned because of that 5th round against Hominick, people saying I gassed and I want to come back stronger than ever.
Kenny Florian: I had a unique opportunity to do stuff for ESPN and do commentary for the UFC and I enjoy doing that. I found a good balance as far as taking time away from that and training. When it's time to analyze fights, I analyze them and when it's time to fight, I fight. That's what I'm doing right now, just getting ready for this fight.

Dana White: Chael talks about everybody. If we wanted to line him up against everyone he talks about, that would be a very difficult job. Should he win this fight, he'll be back in there with the Brazilians soon enough. We'll see what happens.

Gray Maynard: We've danced a couple times. In round one, it took a lot out of both me and him and we fought the last part about half and half. In the third fight, we'll be 100% and it's pretty much up to him if it goes five rounds or if it ends early. I'm going away with the belt but it's up to him if he wants a whole fight or not.
Frankie Edgar: I don't want a whole fight (laughs). I'm preparing for what he has. Of course I want a finish. I don't want to have that feeling again of going to a draw and that's what I'm looking for.

Dana White: There's so many good guys at that 155 pound division, that division is so stacked. I like Melvin Guillard and I always thought he was the biggest waste of talent and he's really turned that around. If he beats Lauzon, it'll be interesting to see who fights for the title next.

Dana White: I think twitter is the greatest marketing tool in the history of the world and it gives you a great link with the fans. I look at twitter to see if people have problems with tickets or with cable and with twitter and I can literally fix things that are happening in the business as it happens through twitter.

Dana White: I came from boxing. I built this company based on the things boxing did wrong. UFC and boxing can co-exist but boxing won't be fixing their problems any time soon. My job is to put fights on that people want to see. The best example is Mayweather - Pacquiao. Even if I don't necessarily agree, I go after guys and try to make fights that fans want to see.

Dana White: We might do a Hall of Fame induction at the expo.

Dana White: Styles make fights and so do fighters. All these guys are hungry. Boxing had that same old story, "if it wasn't for boxing, I'd be dead or in jail." These guys in MMA do it because they love it. Lots of them went to college. When you get guys like this, you get great fights. It's all about guys like this, the great fighters.

Jose Aldo: Anderson Silva is Anderson Silva and Jose Aldo is Jose Aldo. All I can do is train hard and do what I can do put on great fights.

Dana White: People have asked me to comment on the SBJ article. I didn't comment on the Wall Street Journal article either. I think we do fit in the sports world with Major League Baseball, with the NFL and NBA. To do that, you have to have the right deal. There are a lot of organizations that jumped at the first offer and ended quick. No matter what carrots were hanging in front of us, we took this slow. Building a sport is where everyone around the world plays by the same rules.

Frankie Edgar: I've got such great support at home and for me to bring the title back home, it's not just for me, it's for them too. I feel like they're in the cage with me.

Kenny Florian: Maybe if someone is looking for something a little more extreme, the All Balls Brawl could go mainstream. It was a thing I did for College Humor

Dana White: It was like the Showtime boxing fight the other night so I guess it has gone mainstream.

Jose Aldo: I learned my kicks from Pedro Rizzo, watching him fight for many years and training under him as well.

Nick Catone Out of UFC 136 Fight Against Aaron Simpson

The injury bug has hit Nick Catone (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/NickCatone/) once again.

"The Jersey Devil" has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC136/) fight against Aaron Simpson (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/AaronSimpson/) due to an undisclosed injury, sources close to the fighter confirmed with MMAFighting.com.

The 30-year-old, who has only fought once since January 2010 due to several different injuries, including a serious back injury, most recently defeated Costantinos Philippou at UFC 128 in March. No word on the severity of his most recent ailment or who will replace him against Simpson.

Catone (9-2) is 3-2 in the UFC. He also holds wins over Jesse Forbes and Derek Downey.

Simpson (9-2) has won his last two fights in a row against Brad Tavares and Mario Miranda.

UFC 136, headlined by Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard, airs live on pay-per-view from the Toyota Center in Houston on Oct. 8.

Dave Herman out of UFC 136 due to failed drug test; Herman says lab lost his sample (http://prommanow.com/index.php/2011/09/28/dave-herman-out-of-ufc-136-due-to-failed-drug-test-herman-says-lab-lost-his-sample/)

http://prommanow.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dave-pee-wee-herman-267x200.jpg (http://prommanow.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dave-pee-wee-herman.jpg)UFC heavyweight Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (http://prommanow.com/index.php/tag/dave-herman/) was scheduled to fight Mike Russow (http://prommanow.com/index.php/tag/mike-russow/) Oct. 8 at UFC 136 in Houston, however, he was pulled from the card Tuesday after his pre-fight drug screen came back positive for marijuana.
Herman revealed the reason for his removal from the card Tuesday night while a guest on Clinch Gear Radio with hosts Stephen Quadros and Jeff Dotseth (http://www.clinchgear.com/blog/2011/09/dave-pee-wee-herman-clinch-gear-radio-9282011/). Herman denies any wrongdoing and said after initially taking a drug test on Sept. 15, the lab called back a week later to say they lost his urine sample and he needed to retake the test.
Herman said he went back in and retook the test last week, only to be told Tuesday he had tested positive for marijuana. However, when Herman spoke to the Texas State Athletic Commission, he said they had a different story, ”Texas said they never lost it and said the first one was for drugs and the second was for steroids.”
ProMMAnow.com (http://prommanow.com/) (Pro MMA Now (http://www.prommanow.com)) contacted Herman’s manager, Shu Hirata, for comment, but was told they will issue a statement tomorrow.
It is a big disappointment for Herman, who was scheduled to fight for the first time on a UFC Pay-Per-View. Fans will recall Herman earned “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC 131 for his second round TKO of Jon Olav Einemo (http://prommanow.com/index.php/tag/jon-olav-einemo/).
“Pee Wee” said he felt he was in the best shape of his life for UFC 136, but thinks this setback will give him a chance to get that much better before he does return to the Octagon.
As a result of Herman being pulled from the bout, the preliminary bout between Nam Phan (http://prommanow.com/index.php/tag/nam-phan/) and Leonard Garcia (http://prommanow.com/index.php/tag/leonard-garcia/) has been moved to the main card. Kenny Florian Hopes Experience Gives Him UFC 136 Edge Against Jose Aldo

Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JoseAldo/) has had little trouble with any opponent the last three years, but Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/) thinks he might have a solution for the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) featherweight champ.

Florian, fighting for just the second time at 145 pounds after a long stretch at lightweight – and stints at welterweight and middleweight before that – challenges Aldo on Saturday for the featherweight title at UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/) in Houston.

But through a career filled with many ups, and a few downs that include a pair of losses in UFC lightweight title fights, Florian believes it's his longevity that will give him the edge against the Brazilian, who is widely regarded as one of the top three or four pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.

"I think, generally, he hasn't faced a guy who's as well-rounded and experienced as I am," Florian (15-5, 12-4 UFC) said Friday during a media call for UFC 136. "I'm going to bring well-rounded skills, experience and just see where the mystique lies. That's it."

The Aldo mystique has been in full force since he stormed the WEC with five straight knockout wins, including an 8-second KO of Cub Swanson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cub/swanson/1050/) with a flying knee. The standup prowess seemed to fly in the face of the generality that Aldo, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who trains with the famed Black House team, should be devastating on the ground.

But his perfect WEC start earned him a shot at Mike Brown (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/brown/627/)'s featherweight belt, and once he got that shot, he continued his tear, dispatching Brown in the second. Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/) took him to his first decision in nearly three years, but was never real a threat – Aldo outstruck Faber 138-27, according to FightMetric, and stuffed all nine of his takedown attempts.

After knocking out Manny Gamburyan to defend his WEC belt a second time, Aldo became the UFC featherweight champion and was given his stiffest test as champion from Mark Hominick (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/hominick/578/) in April. Hominick dominated Aldo in the fifth round, outstriking the clearly gassed champ 62-3.

Florian who survived a close fight against Diego Nunes in June in his featherweight debut to get his shot at Aldo. And while he didn't say getting into the later rounds with Aldo gives him an advantage, Aldo's fifth round against Hominick might give him hope that the Brazilian is beatable – especially if Florian can weather the early storm.

"He's pretty unique and a very fast, explosive guy," Florian said. "His dangerous weapons are his legs and excellent footwork. He's very, very fast and, I think, dangerous on the ground. He's definitely a unique opponent, and I had to prepare differently for him for sure."

Florian's title fight experience comes from a unanimous decision loss to Sean Sherk (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/sean/sherk/183/) at UFC 64 for the then-vacant lightweight belt, then a submission loss to BJ Penn (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/bj/penn/361/) in the fourth round at UFC 101 when he got another crack after a six-fight winning streak.

After losing to Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/) in a top contenders fight at UFC 118, giving Maynard a shot at Frankie Edgar, Florian dropped to featherweight. He competed on the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" as a middleweight, quickly dropped back to welterweight after the show, then moved down to his long-time lightweight home.

But through all the weight classes, Florian said one thing has been the same – constant improvement.

"I think every fight is always going to be different," Florian said. "You're always going to have a different mindset based on your training camp, based on your opponent. I've always learned from each previous camp, win or lose. I've made a lot of mistakes and I've tightened some of those mistakes. My goal is to try and make each training camp better and better each time, and to try and increase my work load capacity and improve my skills, and I think I've done that every training camp.

"I've trained my ass off for this fight, and I'm looking forward to going out there and competing hard."

Florian and Aldo fight in the co-main event of UFC 136 at the Toyota Center in Houston. The main event is the lightweight title rematch between champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Also on the card is a middleweight contenders fight between former title challenger Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann.

Aldo ready for Florian: “I prepared myself to go for a submission or the knockout”

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo talked exclusively to TATAME one day before heading to the United States, where he’ll defend his belt against Kenny Florian, on November 8th. On the interview that you can check below Junior seemed to be a lot confident of a win and guaranteed he’ll do everything in his power so that his fans don’t suffer with a five-round bout, didn’t seem to be afraid of Florian’s reach and guaranteed to go for it. The tough guy also commented on the American’s strong points and how to neutralize them, among many other subjects.

How was the preparation for another title defense, now against Kenny Florian?

All three months of trainings were great, this is how long we take to get ready for a fight and I’m feeling fine thanks’ God and now I’ll just get there and do what I trained for. I always try to keep training, I let go my nights out or parties, because that’s my life, nobody tells me to do it, I chose this lige and I try to be professional.

But at some point you need to relax, take it easy...

The most I do is go to the movies, but then I’m at home at midnight. I also like playing videogame, and when i get home I go and play soccer, I love Pro Evolution. Another thing I also like doing it go to Flamengo’s matches, which is something I really love doing, so these are my hobbies. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, and these are my only ways of having fun.

Kenny Florian has a greater reach than you and are taller than your previous opponent, Hominick. Does that worry you?

Actually, Hominick is shorter than Florian, but he has a larger reach, so I’m used to it. I fought Jonathan Brookins, who’s a guy bigger than both of them and he was a lefty, so it’s almost the same game. My tallest training partners, like Leo Santos and (Luis) Cane try to play it like Kenny does. I also brought an Olympic boxer from Salvador to train with me, Davi. Diego Nunes fought Florian and he told me some things I should know, he said he’s a too calm guy, experienced and he also told me he waits for the right time.

Do you believe a good way to minimize this reach gap is to hit him with low kicks?

Absolutely. I’ll kick him in the leg, and we’ll start going up so when it truly gets him, you know what happens, right? (laughs).

Nova Uniao black belt, BJ Penn found in Jiu-Jitsu a way to defeat Florian, submitting him with a rear naked choke. Do you believe you’ll get the advantage in case you take him down?

I belçieve so. In my point of view, my Jiu-Jitsu is enough to put up Kenny and maybe get something from it. He’s very good when he’s on top, but when he has his back against the floor he doesn’t do anything, he just hits you with his elbows and keeps his guard closed. When he opens it, his opponents get an advantage. I trained a lot and I’m sharp in all situations it can go. It doesn’t matter if he wants to bang, I’ll do it. If he wants to fight on the ground, it’s ok by me. I’ll get there and go for it.

Where do you think he’s dangerous at?

He has a big experience and I can’t underestimate his elbows, because it’s something he uses a lot and he’s good at it, besides kicking hard, he owns a powerful high kick. I gotta stay tuned to these tricks, but I’m sure I’ll block them.

Do you think he’ll try to stand and bang against you?

All fights start with both athletes standing, but honestly I don’t believe he’ll want to bang with me, he won’t risk it. He’s a guy who doesn’t take risks, you can notice it on his fights and you’ll realize he didn’t start trading punches with anyone from the beginning, he always tries to get away from it with a jab or a punch and then grab you and take you into his game.

Have you ‘honores’ your last opponent, Mark Hominick? (Aldo has skulls tattooed representing some of his opponents on his shoulder)

I didn’t honor him (laughs). That’s a privilege for those who has been knocked out by me, and since I defeated him by points I didn’t honor him. It’s only for those I’ve knocked out. I did an excellent fight against him, but I couldn’t knock him out.

Battle Brewing Over Next to Fight for Belt as Champ Anderson Silva Recovers

HOUSTON -- Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/) and Brian Stann (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/stann/667/) both hope to make their case as the next man to fight Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) on Saturday. But their UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/) fight, largely considered a possible No. 1 contenders bout, is no sure thing to produce a middleweight title challenger.

On Wednesday, UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White said there was more than one possibility for Silva, and he seemed willing to wait to see how things play out before committing to a plan.

One alternate possibility? If Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) beats Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/) next month, he might bump to the front of the line.

The returning star recently vacated the Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) light heavyweight championship to come back to the UFC. And though his first fight back will be at light heavyweight, he's willing to move down to 185 for another crack at Silva.

"We've got to see what happens here," White said. "The winner of [Sonnen-Stann] deserves a shot at Anderson Silva? It'd be tough to say no. But if Henderson beats Shogun, it'd be tough to say that Henderson doesn't deserve the shot either. So we'll see what happens."

White also revealed that if Silva had been healthy, he likely would have been slotted into an immediate title bout with Henderson. It would actually be a rematch, as the two squared off at UFC 82 in March 2008, with Silva winning via rear- naked choke in the second round.

Meanwhile, Sonnen seems to have toned down some of his usually pointed comments aimed at Silva, a fact that led a Brazilian reporter to ask him about how much of what he says is for show. Sonnen, who came across a bit subdued throughout the UFC 136 press conference, suddenly came to life, saying that he still has the long-reigning champion in his crosshairs.

"I'm not scared of that guy, I'm not going to apologize to that guy," said Sonnen, who is favored to beat Stann this weekend. "And I appreciate what the Brazilian people said, and a lot of that was said in good fun. But the bottom line is I'm sticking a finger in his chest, I'm picking a fight, and I'm not going to quit."

Whether Henderson (28-8), Sonnen (25-11-1) or Stann (11-3) receives the opportunity might also be a question of timing. Silva is still on the mend after a shoulder injury. The problem isn't considered serious, but simply a matter of time and rehabilitation.

"He has bursitis in his shoulder," White said. "The doctor told him he needs to rest it for eight weeks, and he's doing physical therapy. It's not like he's got some injury that needs surgery or anything like that. As amazing as this guy is, we forget this guy is 37 years old."

Regardless of the challenger, upsetting Silva will be an uphill task. The popular champion is riding a UFC-record 14-fight win streak, and he's successfully defended his belt nine straight times, also a record.

Florian: “I know I can beat anybody at 145lbs and even at 155lbs”
By Guilherme Cruz

Kenny Florian wants to get it, finally. After wasting two chances, the athlete plans to leave the cage of UFC 136, this Saturday, with the featherweight belt on his waist, but to do so he’ll have to beat Jose Aldo, who’s ruling the division for a long time. Before entering the octagon, Florian talked to TATAME Magazine and guaranteed: he’ll defeat the Brazilian. “For everything that I’m doing at my training camp I feel that I know I can beat anybody at 145lbs and even at 155lbs. I can give a difficult fight for anybody”, warns, complimenting his opponent a lot, also revealing he is not scared of Aldo’s striking.

What do you think about Jose Aldo? Do you think he’s one of the best pound for pound fighters?

Absolutely. For a long time I thought that Jose Aldo was one of the bests fighters in the world pound for pound. I’ve been a fan of his since the first time I saw him fight. He’s really exciting, very, very fast, explosive... That’s the kind of fighter I like to watch. Aldo’s been a great champion, but way I see it, it’s just business, we have to fight and this has been a dream of mine, it’s a dream of his and it’s gonna be who wants it more. And that’s what it comes down to.

Kenny Florian Hopes Third Time Is The Charm In Elusive Championship Hunt

HOUSTON -- For Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/), the third time better be the charm.

The respected UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) veteran has twice before fought for a UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) title, but come up short each time. Saturday might be the 35-year-old's last chance at a major championship.

For Florian, the opportunity comes just one fight into the move to the UFC's featherweight division. In his 145-pound debut, Florian earned a decision over Diego Nunes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/diego/nunes/1083/), but it wasn't a vintage performance, leading many to wonder if he can bring the goods to beat the great Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/).
Florian says that moving down was a good decision at a bad time. At the moment he decided to try his hand at featherweight, he was coming off a knee injury that had him sidelined, and he weighed around 180 pounds, his heaviest weight in years.

Getting those 35 pounds off to make the featherweight limit proved to be what he termed the "toughest thing I've ever done in my life, for sure."

With only four months between that fight and this weekend's UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/), Florian monitored his weight much closer, getting no higher than 168 pounds. On Thursday, one day before weigh-ins, he told MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting he was at 154.

So the weight issue is no issue.

That makes Saturday all about performance. In Aldo, Florian faces a well-rounded opponent with fast hands, excellent power and underrated grappling.

Except for the fact that Aldo is liberal with his use of kicks, he's fairly similar to the man that Florian last faced for the title, BJ Penn (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/bj/penn/361/).

The Penn loss proved to be a turning point for Florian. Prior to that, he spent most of his time training with his coaching staff and a series of partners, many of whom had never fought professionally.

Soon after, he began to supplement the training at his own Boston area gym with trip to Montreal to train with Firas Zahabi. That opened up a new world of training partners, from UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/) to wunderkind Rory MacDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rory/macdonald/1176/). Under the "iron sharpens iron" philosophy, Florian believes that improved preparation will have him at his best for Aldo.

"I just think I'm doing it at the right time, where I have all the things I should have had all along during my career," he said." I have the best coaches, the best training partners. I think I found a good groove, a good way to train."

Yet Florian will have to find a way to put that hard work into action on Saturday. After his UFC 118 loss to Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/), a No. 1 contenders fight that precipitated his drop to featherweight, UFC president Dana White characterized Florian's performance in less than flattering terms. In fact, he threw out a phrase that most fighters would consider offensive.

"I think Kenny is just one of those guys who chokes in big fights," White said then (http://www.mmafighting.com/2010/08/29/dana-white-on-kenny-florian-he-chokes-in-the-big-fights/).

Not surprisingly, Florian strongly disagrees, citing his wins Roger Huerta (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/roger/huerta/504/) and Joe Stevenson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/joe/stevenson/477/) prior to earning his title shot against Penn, along with wins over Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) and Takanori Gomi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/takanori/gomi/721/).

But White yields a big megaphone. When he says something, it usually sticks. So Florian won't just be fighting for a belt, he'll be fighting to try and change that perception of him.

"For the fans, and for the all the haters, the people who do say I choke in the big fights, it would be validation as well, but more than anything else, I want to go in there and beat a great opponent in Aldo," he said.

If he can't do it, his future will be murky. Three championship losses in two divisions may limit his options. Does he try to rebound at 145? Move back up to lightweight? Is retirement a possibility? White, at least, is on record as saying it could be Florian's last title fight. So Florian has to make it count.

MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) will always be in his life in some way, shape or form, but UFC 136 may be his last chance to pan for gold.

"It's a dream of mine since I committed to be a professional fighter," he said. "That's what everyone wants and what they should want. I'd still be the same fighter, still be the same guy. It would be some validation, really for everyone else, I guess. I know I'm a good fighter. I've done all the work. I've prepared hard. That's the most important thing."
