McKenzie-Rocha, Johnson-Harvison Added to UFC's Return to New Orleans

A pair of submission specialists will be looking for a tap in New Orleans, and it won't be one on Bourbon Street.

Lightweights Cody McKenzie (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cody/mckenzie/1713/) and Vagner Rocha (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vagner/rocha/1565/) have made verbal agreements to meet at UFC Fight Night 25 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFCFightNight25/) in September. The promotion made the announcement at UFC.com on Wednesday morning.

In addition, the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC/) recently added a welterweight bout between DaMarques Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/damarques/johnson/876/) and Clay Harvison (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/harvison/1818/) to the card, which will be headlined by a welterweight scrap between Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/shields/1202/) and Jake Ellenberger (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/ellenberger/965/).

McKenzie (12-1, 1-1 UFC), a cast member of Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter," saw his ridiculous streak of 11 straight choke submission victories end in January when he was, ironically, choked out by Yves Edwards (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yves/edwards/283/). Prior to that, McKenzie had 12 stoppage wins, and 11 straight first-round choke submissions – 10 by way of a guillotine he has modified into what he calls the "McKenzietine."

McKenzie, an Alaska native, was a member of Georges St-Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/)'s squad on TUF 12 and reached the quarterfinals before losing to Nam Phan (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nam/phan/1243/). In his UFC debut at the TUF 12 Finale in December, he beat Aaron Wilkinson by guillotine to win his official UFC debut and Submission of the Night honors. He won a second straight bonus for Fight of the Night in his loss to Edwards at Fight for the Troops 2 in January. Since then, an injury forced him out of a UFC 130 fight with Bart Palaszewski.

Rocha (6-2, 0-1 UFC), a Bellator and Strikeforce veteran, made his UFC debut last month and was dominated in the standup game by Donald Cerrone en route to a unanimous decision loss. The Brazilian, who has a black belt in BJJ, fights out of Florida and will be looking to avoid his third loss in four fights. Four of his six career wins are by submission.

Johnson (12-9, 3-3 UFC), runner-up on TUF 9, is coming off a tough submission loss to Season 7 TUF winner Amir Sadollah at Fight Night 24 in March. Before that, he submitted Mike Guymon in January, sending "The Joker" into retirement. Johnson has yet to go the distance in the UFC – all three of his wins and all three of his losses have been by stoppage.

In Harvison (9-3, 1-0 UFC), Johnson gets another TUF veteran. Harvison, a member of Brock Lesnar's team on Season 13 this past spring, reached the quarterfinals, but lost to eventual runner-up Ramsey Nijem. At the TUF 13 Finale in June, Harvison won a split decision over fellow cast member Justin Edwards on the preliminary card. It was the first time the Georgia-based fighter had gone to a decision in his pro career.

UFC Fight Night 25, also known as "The Battle of the Bayou" as part of a promotion with major sponsor Bud Light, will be the UFC's first trip to New Orleans in the Zuffa era. The promotion's last trip to the Big Easy was UFC 27 in September 2000. UFC 16 and 18 also took place in the Louisiana city. The last time the UFC visited Louisiana was UFC 37, which took place just outside Shreveport in Bossier City.

In addition to the fight between Shields and Ellenberger, a matchup that was first reported by MMA Fighting (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/06/26/jake-shields-jake-ellenberger-likely-for-fall-ufc-fight/) last month, Fight Night 25, which will air live on Spike TV, will feature many other TUF veterans, including Court McGee vs. Dongi Yang and Jonathan Brookins vs. Erik Koch, plus a middleweight bout between Alan Belcher and Jason MacDonald.

Fight Night 25 takes place Sept. 17 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Wand Fight Team's Jorge Lopez to Make UFC Debut Against Justin Edwards

Jorge Lopez, a Muay Thai and MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) trainer at Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/wanderlei/silva/275/)'s Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas, will make his UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) debut on the undercard of UFC Fight Night 25 on Sept. 17 in New Orleans.

"Wandsports gonna have his first fighter In the UFC!" Silva tweeted Friday morning. "Jorge Lopez received the contract yesterday and is now a UFC fighter. My future champion."

Standing across the cage from Lopez in the welterweight's UFC debut will be The Ultimate Fighter 13 contestant Justin Edwards (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/justin/edwards/1817/).

At only 22 years of age, Lopez already holds a professional MMA record of 11-1. Fighting primarily in California, Utah and Las Vegas, he has compiled wins over Brett Cooper (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brett/cooper/1679/), Waachiim Spiritwolf and David Marshall (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/david/marshall/1668/).

Edwards (6-1), out of Team Jorge Gurgel (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jorge/gurgel/291/) in Cincinnati, lost a split decision to Clay Harvison (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/harvison/1818/) in his UFC debut last June at the TUF 13 Finale. On the show, Edwards was knocked out by an upkick in the opening round by eventual season winner Tony Ferguson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tony/ferguson/1815/).

UFC Fight Night 25, also titled "Battle at the Bayou," is headlined by Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/shields/1202/) vs. Jake Ellenberger in a welterweight bout. The other televised bouts on the Spike TV card will be Court McGee vs. Dongi Yang, Jonathan Brookins vs. Erik Koch and Alan Belcher vs. Jason MacDonald

Jake Shields Will Remain on UFN 25 Following Father's Death

Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JakeShields/) has decided to go through with his Sept. 17 fight against Jake Ellenberger (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/ellenberger/965/) at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) Fight Night 25 following the recent death of his father and manager, Jack Shields. MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting confirmed the fighter's decision with UFC officials.

GracieFighter.com (http://graciefighter.com/2011/08/r-i-p-jack-shields/) broke the news of Jack Shields' passing on Tuesday. He was 67 years old.

No word just yet on the cause of death. According to Sherdog.com (http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Jack-Shields-Father-Manager-of-UFCs-Jake-Shields-Dead-at-67-35184), Shields died in his sleep on Monday at his Sacramento, Calif., home.

"Lost my father manager and one of my best friends today!! R.I.P jack you will be greatly missed and loved by many," Shields was quoted as saying on the Web site.

Shields served as his son's manager since 2002. Prior to his son's title fight against Georges St-Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/) at UFC 129, Shields spoke (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/04/21/for-jake-shields-ufc-title-shot-against-georges-st-pierre-a-fa/) to MMA Fighting's Ben Fowlkes about how he ended up working with his son.

"After the ['Mach'] Sakurai fight he didn't get any offers. He upset Sakurai and then two months later he still wasn't in any fights. So he asked me to find him a fight," he said.

"Jake asked me to manage him after that and I said, 'I'm sure there's someone down there who knows the business a lot better than I do. I'm all the way up here in the mountains. There's got to be someone closer to you who knows this business.' Six to eight months later he sent me a contract that somebody wanted him to sign and then I took over. It was terrible. I had to [delete] the whole thing and write a new one."

UFN 25: "Battle at the Bayou" airs live on Spike TV from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Shields vs. Ellenberger will serve as the card's main event.

Retirement May Loom for Jason MacDonald, But Not Until He Stops Having Fun

NEW ORLEANS – In a lot of ways, had Jason MacDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jason/macdonald/240/) reinjured the ankle that he hurt at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 113, it would have at least kept him from being conflicted down the road.

As it is, MacDonald's ankle feels healthy, he said, and he feels good about where he's at heading into his Saturday fight against Alan Belcher (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alan/belcher/521/) at UFC Fight Night 25 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFCFightNight25/).

MacDonald said a reaggravation of that injury might have forced him to retire from MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/). But it's not the ankle that will ultimately wind up deciding when it's time for him to quit – it's the realistic mindset he prides himself on.

"I'm interested, I'm still motivated to go train every day, I still enjoy it – so I'm still going to do it," MacDonald said Thursday at the New Orleans Athletic Club. "The moment I don't want to put in the work, I'll be a guy who steps away. I'm not going to wait until I've been knocked out four times in a row and just hang on for that one more pay day. I have things to fall back on. There are other things in my life besides fighting. When I stop having fun, I'm going to move on in life."

It's ironic that MacDonald was recently in the position to come back after a long injury layoff. An injury against John Salter (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/john/salter/1185/) at UFC 113 in Montreal last year kept him on the shelf until UFC 129 in April, when he ignited his home country Canadian fans in Toronto with a submission win over Ryan Jensen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/jensen/318/).

Now MacDonald (25-14, 6-6 UFC) faces Belcher (16-6, 7-4 UFC), who has been out since, coincidentally, UFC 113 with eye problems that required surgery. And MacDonald said he knows what Belcher has on his mind.

"I can relate to what he's going through," MacDonald said. "I know the things that were going through my head before Toronto: 'Am I gonna get back good enough to do this? Am I gonna reaggravate the injury and call it wrap, call it a career?' There are lots of unanswered questions there. I was able to answer those questions in Toronto, and obviously Alan's going to have to answer those questions. I think I can understand some of the things going through his head."

Belcher had plenty of momentum on his side before his layoff – four straight fight night bonuses and a 3-1 mark which had just a controversial split decision loss to Yoshihiro Akiyama (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yoshihiro/akiyama/914/) as a blemish.

But MacDonald said even a win over Belcher doesn't mean he can necessarily count on sticking around for a while to go on a title run.

"For me, I know I belong here," MacDonald said. "I'm no one-fight wonder. If you look at my fights and my record, I've fought a who's who of the middleweight division. It's not a question of if I belong here, it's how much longer can I do this for? How much longer do I want to do this for?"

MacDonald said Chris Lytle (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/lytle/217/)'s retirement last month had him thinking about his own situation with four kids at home, and being closer to 40 than 30. He also said keeping it real comes in handy.

"I'm not a title contender," MacDonald said. "People might say that's a poor thing to say, but I'm realistic. Even if I beat Alan on Saturday, I'm a lot of fights away from a title shot. You start asking yourself, 'How many more fights do I want to do this for?' When it's time to step away, it's time to step away. I don't know the answer to that question yet. I'm 37 years old, I've had a good run and now it's time to start looking forward.

"But right now, right here, right this second, I'm focused on Saturday night."

MacDonald and Belcher open the main card of UFC Fight Night 25 on Spike TV at 9 p.m. Eastern. The main event features a welterweight fight between Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/shields/1202/) and Jake Ellenberger (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/ellenberger/965/).

UFC Fight Night 25 Weigh-In Results: Jake Shields, Jake Ellenberger on Weight

NEW ORLEANS – For a bunch of fighters cutting weight all week, there might not be a better city in the country to put a few pounds back on than New Orleans.

All 24 fighters for UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) Fight Night 25 made weight Friday at Spanish Plaza in New Orleans on the banks of the Mississippi River. UFC Fight Night 25 takes place Saturday at the Ernest R. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, the UFC's first trip to "The Big Easy" since UFC 29.

Main event fighters Jake Shields (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/shields/1202/) (171) and Jake Ellenberger (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jake/ellenberger/965/) (170) each made weight for their welterweight bout. Shields fights for the first time since the death of his father and manager, Jack Shields, last month. Shields is coming off a five-round decision loss to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/). Ellenberger seeks his fifth straight win.

Also on the main card, co-main event fighters Court McGee (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/court/mcgee/1543/) and Dong-Yi Yang weighed in at 184.5 and 186 pounds, respectively, for their middleweight bout. McGee returns for the first time since a UFC 121 submission win over Ryan Jensen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/jensen/318/), moving him to 2-0 on the UFC after winning Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter." Hand and knee injuries have kept him on the shelf since then.

Another TUF winner, TUF 12 champ Jonathan Brookins (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jonathan/brookins/1095/), weighed in at 145.5 for his fight against Erik Koch (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/erik/koch/1092/), who is looking for his third straight fight night bonus award and fourth straight win. Koch was 146.

And Alan Belcher (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alan/belcher/521/) returns for the first time in 16 months following a pair of surgeries for a detached retina to fight Jason MacDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jason/macdonald/240/) in a middleweight bout to open the televised card on Spike TV. MacDonald returned in April after a nearly yearlong layoff for a broken leg and submitted Jensen at UFC 129. Belcher was 186 after stripping down; MacDonald was 185.

On the preliminary card, "The Ultimate Fighter" vets Shamar Bailey (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shamar/bailey/1425/) (156) and Cody McKenzie (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cody/mckenzie/1713/) (155.5) were each on weight for their fights against Evan Dunham (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/evan/dunham/648/) (156) and Vagner Rocha (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vagner/rocha/1565/) (155.5), respectively. The eight-fight preliminary card streams live on the UFC's Facebook page.
