Two Fights Booked for New UFC on Versus 6 Event; Washington, D.C. Likely Location

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) will fulfill its four-event deal with the Versus cable station in October with UFC on Versus 6 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConVersus6/).

The promotion made the announcement Saturday night, though the date and location for the event has not yet been announced. The UFC said that information will be released "in the coming weeks." But Heavy.com on Saturday (http://%20http//www.heavy.com/mma/ufc/2011/07/ufc-heads-to-washington-d-c/) reported the event will take place Oct. 1 in Washington, D.C.

And to get the card started, the promotion made a pair of fight announcements for the show at the same time. Welterweights Charlie Brenneman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/charlie/brenneman/1478/) and Anthony Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/johnson/516/) will meet, and lightweights Mac Danzig (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mac/danzig/395/) and Matt Wiman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/matt/wiman/510/) will also fight in a long-awaited rematch.

Brenneman (14-2, 3-1 UFC) is coming off the biggest win of his career, a major upset of Rick Story (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rick/story/669/) in the co-main event of UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh last month. Brenneman took the fight on short notice when Nate Marquardt (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nate/marquardt/372/) was ruled out, and he took advantage with a unanimous decision win. Story was a more than 5-to-1 favorite.

Johnson (9-3, 6-3 UFC) was originally scheduled to face Marquardt last month, but had to pull out with an injury. Story filled in for him. Johnson has won four of his last five fights, but has fought just once since a November 2009 loss to Josh Koscheck (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/josh/koscheck/330/). In March, he beat Dan Hardy (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/hardy/492/) by unanimous decision.

Danzig (20-8-1, 4-4 UFC), the Season 6 winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," returns for the first time since a December Knockout of the Night win over Joe Stevenson in Montreal. He was scheduled to face Donald Cerrone at UFC 131, but pulled out with an injury.

Wiman (13-6, 7-4 UFC) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Dennis Siver at UFC 132 earlier this month. After the decision was announced – 29-28 on all three judges' cards for Siver – Wiman stormed out of the cage. The loss ended a three-fight winning streak for the three-time Fight of the Night bonus winner, including his controversial win over Danzig at UFC 115.

At UFC 115 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC115/) in Vancouver in June 2010, Wiman caught Danzig in a guillotine (http://www.mmafighting.com/2010/06/12/ufc-115-mac-danzig-robbed-in-loss-to-matt-wiman/). Referee Yves Lavigne, believing Danzig was out, stopped the fight – but Danzig popped up immediately to protest, clearly not out. Danzig explained to Joe Rogan after the fight that he wasn't out, but didn't hold any ill will toward Lavigne. The two were scheduled to rematch at UFC Fight Night 22, but a Danzig injury forced him out. Wiman was later forced off the same card with an injury.

UFC on Versus 6 will be the promotion's fourth event on the cable station in 2011. The two previous "UFC Live" cards this year have been in Louisville and Pittsburgh. Next month, UFC on Versus 5 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConVersus5/) takes place in Milwaukee. Like all three of those cities, the UFC will be making its debut in Washington, the nation's capital.

Michael Johnson vs. Paul Sass Set for UFC on Versus 6

The Ultimate Fighter 12 lightweight runner-up Michael Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/johnson/1711/) will make his third trip inside the Octagon when he meets British youngster Paul Sass (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/paul/sass/1641/) at UFC on Versus 6 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConVersus6/), the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) announced Thursday on its UK Twitter.

The UFC Live event is expected to take place Oct. 1 at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

Despite being Georges St. Pierre's first pick, Johnson (9-5) fell short of becoming "The Ultimate Fighter" in the finals last December against Jonathan Brookins (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jonathan/brookins/1095/). Johnson then returned last month, stopping Edward Faaloloto (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/edward/faaloloto/1667/) in the first round with punches at UFC on Versus 4.

The undefeated 22-year-old Sass (11-0) has not competed since his UFC debut last October at UFC 120 against Mark Holst. The contest earned Sass Submission of the Night honors with an impressive triangle choke, dubbed the "Sassangle," to his displeasure.

Charlie Brenneman vs. Anthony Johnson and Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman are two other bouts currently slated for the card.

War Struve!

The UFC's tallest heavyweight has a date with the promotion's shortest one.

UFC officials today announced that verbal agreements are in place for 6-foot-11 Stefan Struve (21-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) to meet 5-foot-11 Pat Barry (6-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) at UFC on Versus 6.

UFC on Versus 6 takes place Oct. 1 at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. The evening's main card airs on Versus.

Struve vs. Barry likely will be part of the broadcast.

As officials previously announced, UFC on Versus 6 features a rare title fight on free TV; bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz puts his belt on the line against fast-rising Demetrious Johnson.

Struve fights for the first time since a UFC 130 knockout loss to Travis Browne. The first-round loss came after the well-rounded Dutch fighter's string of five wins in six fights, which included stoppage victories over the likes of Sean McCorkle, Christian Morecraft and Chase Gormley. His only other UFC losses have come to No. 1 heavyweight contender Junior Dos Santos and "The Ultimate Fighter 10" champion Roy Nelson.

Barry, meanwhile, fights for the first time since a stunning loss to Cheick Kongo in the UFC on Versus 4 headliner. Barry thoroughly battered his towering opponent and nearly prompted a TKO stoppage on multiple occasions in the June fight. But a dazed and wobbly Kongo connected on two stiff rights in the first round to earn the unthinkable comeback victory.

Barry now has alternated between wins and losses for his entire six-fight UFC career.

Dit wordt lastig voor Struve. In de stand up slaat Barry hem zeker ko.

Mike Easton Meets Jeff Hougland at UFC on Versus 6 in Washington D.C.
One of the top prospects in the bantamweight division will make his UFC debut this October when Mike Easton takes on Jeff Hougland at UFC on Versus 6 in Washington D.C.

UFC officials announced the new bout on Tuesday.

Hailing from the D.C. area, Mike Easton made his name fighting in the local UWC promotion, picking up several wins there over the last few years including victories over Greg Jackson student John Dodson and former WEC champion Chase Beebe.

Easton has also become one of UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz’s main training partners for his last fight fights, and now he gets his own chance at Octagon glory.

Facing Easton in his debut will be Jeff Hougland making his second appearance in the UFC.

Hougland got his first fight in the UFC in July where he stepped in on short notice and defeated Donny Walker by unanimous decision.

He’ll try to duplicate that success in his 2nd fight as well when he faces Easton in October.

Yves Edwards-Rafaello Oliveira on Tap for UFC on Versus 6 in Washington, D.C.

Yves Edwards will look to rebound from a Knockout of the Year-caliber loss to Sam Stout (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/sam/stout/520/) last month when he meets Rafaello Oliveira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rafaello/oliveira/1136/) in October.

The two lightweights have agreed to meet at UFC on Versus 6 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConVersus6/) on Oct. 1 in the UFC's debut in the nation's capital. The promotion announced the matchup Thursday night.

UFC on Versus 6, the last of the promotion's four-card deal with the cable channel for 2011, will take place at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., and will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/) and Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demetrious/johnson/1495/).

Edwards (40-17-1, 8-5 UFC) lost for the first time since his latest return to the UFC when a vicious left from Stout knocked him out cold in the first round of their UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+131/) bout. Stout won Knockout of the Night honors and snapped Edwards' three-fight winning streak, which included a double bonus for Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night in a win over Cody McKenzie (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cody/mckenzie/1713/) at the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2 show in January.

Edwards is in his eighth stint with the UFC. His career with the promotion started at UFC 33 with a loss to future welterweight champ Matt Serra (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/matt/serra/212/). In between returns to the Octagon, the Bahamas-born fighter has had bouts for a wide-ranging set of promotions, including Pride, Bodog Fight, EliteXC, Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) and Bellator.

Oliveira (14-4, 1-3 UFC) is coming off a submission loss to fellow Brazilian Gleison Tibau at UFC 130 in May. That fight came on short notice, replacing an injured Bart Palaszewski, and was Oliveira's return to the UFC after going 4-0 outside the promotion after a 1-2 run in 2009-2010.

In addition to the bantamweight title fight between Cruz and Johnson, UFC on Versus 6 features a heavyweight tilt between the 6-foot-11 Stefan Struve and 5-11 Pat Barry, a welterweight bout between Charlie Brenneman and Anthony Johnson and the long-awaited rematch between Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig following their controversial finish at UFC 115 in June 2010. The main card will air live on Versus.

TJ Grant Drops to Lightweight, Meets Shane Roller at UFC on Versus 6

Canadian fighter TJ Grant (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/TJGrant/) will return to action after a nearly 10-month layoff, and he'll drop from welterweight to lightweight to take on Shane Roller (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/ShaneRoller/).

The UFC announced the fight booking late Friday for its first visit to Washington, D.C., in October, saying both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout.

The Oct. 1 show will be UFC on Versus 6 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConVersus6/) and will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/DominickCruz/) and top contender Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/DemetriousJohnson/).

Grant (16-5, 3-3 UFC) has not fought since a UFC 124 decision loss to Ricardo Almeida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ricardo/almeida/287/) in December. His UFC career at welterweight has been up and down, with each of his three wins followed by a loss. All six of his UFC fights have been on pay-per-views, but have been on preliminary cards.

Grant was an instrumental part of last month's intriguing storyline at UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh. Grant was scheduled to fight Charlie Brenneman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/charlie/brenneman/1478/), but several days before the fight he had to pull out with an illness, leaving Brenneman without a fight. But when Nate Marquardt (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nate/marquardt/372/) was pulled from his main event with Rick Story (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rick/story/669/) by the Pennsylvania commission (and subsequently released by the UFC). Brenneman then was tapped to face Story and pulled off one of the year's biggest upsets – an upset that wouldn't have been possible without Grant's illness earlier in the week.

Roller (10-4, 1-1 UFC) had won two straight – and two fight night bonuses – and five of his last six before a vicious knockout loss to Melvin Guillard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/melvin/guillard/501/) at UFC 132 earlier this month. The former All-American wrestler from Oklahoma State went 6-2 in the WEC prior to the merger with the UFC. His only two losses in that promotion came to eventual lightweight champions Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis. His wins included submissions of former champion Jamie Varner and Anthony Njokuani. Only one of his 14 career fights has gone the distance.

UFC on Versus 6 will be the fourth and final show on the promotion's 2011 deal with the Versus cable station. The card will take place at the Verizon Center in the nation's capital. In addition to the 135-pound title fight between Cruz and Johnson, UFC on Versus 6 features a heavyweight tilt between Stefan Struve and Pat Barry, who both are coming off knockout losses; a welterweight fight between Brenneman and Anthony Johnson; and an anticipated rematch between Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig, 16 months after their controversial finish at UFC 115.

UFC Vets Josh Neer, Keith Wisniewski Return at UFC on Versus 6

A pair of veteran fighters – both with UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) experience and with more than 80 professional fights between them – are returning to the promotion and will face each other this fall at UFC on Versus 6.

Verbal agreements are in place for welterweights Josh Neer (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/josh/neer/500/) and Keith Wisniewski (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/keith/wisniewski/453/) (pictured) to meet on Oct. 1 in Washington, D.C. Sources close to the fight confirmed the matchup to MMA Fighting on Tuesday morning, which was first reported by MMA Junkie (http://mmajunkie.com/news/24915/josh-neer-vs-keith-wisniewski-targeted-for-ufc-on-versus-6-on-oct-1.mma). Neer and Wisniewski have 83 pro fights between them – 42 for Neer, 41 for Wisniewski – yet both are under 30 years old.

UFC on Versus 6 is the promotion's debut in the nation's capital city and will be the company's final live show on the cable station in its current four-fight deal. The card will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/) and Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demetrious/johnson/1495/).

Neer (31-10-1, 4-6 UFC) returns to the big show for the first time since a decision loss to Gleison Tibau (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gleison/tibau/514/) at UFC 104. Neer has gone on a four-fight win streak since being choked out by Bellator (http://www.mmafighting.com/bellator/) lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/eddie/alvarez/890/) 15 months ago, and all four wins have been stoppages.

On Saturday, Neer stopped Blas Avena (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/blas/avena/1077/) with a first-round TKO at a Superior Cage Combat show in Las Vegas. And in June, he defended his Shark Fights interim welterweight belt against Jesse Juarez. Since being cut by the UFC, Neer has won six of seven fights with just the Alvarez loss, at Bellator 17, a blemish on his record.

Neer first fought in the UFC on the first Fight Night card in August 2005, losing by submission to Drew Fickett. He returned at Fight Night 3 and submitted Melvin Guillard, currently one of the UFC's top lightweights, and then beat Joe Stevenson at Fight Night 4. Losses to Josh Burkman and Nick Diaz, at UFC 61 and 62, sent him packing. But he returned at Fight Night 13 and stayed put in the UFC for five straight bouts, going 2-3 with wins over Din Thomas and Mac Danzig, and decision losses to Nate Diaz, Kurt Pellegrino and Tibau. His fights with Nate Diaz and Danzig both were Fight of the Night winners.

Wisniewski (28-12-1, 0-1 UFC) is in the midst of a six-fight winning streak that includes a submission of UFC veteran Pete Spratt and a dominant decision win over UFC vet Chris Wilson in April. Wisniewski's lone UFC fight came against Nick Thompson at UFC 56, a unanimous decision loss.

After his loss to Thompson, Wisniewski signed with Bodog Fight and lost a split decision to Jorge Masvidal. He then hooked up with the IFL and lost to Rory Markham. That loss was followed by a pair of split decision setbacks. In fact, the way Wisniewski sees it, his six-fight winning streak could just as easily be 10.

"There were three split decisions and one draw that was going to go into overtime, and I couldn't continue," Wisniewski told MMA Fighting in April. "Two of those, I've gone back and watched and I'm certain that I won. Two of them, maybe I lost but they could've gone my way – they were really close decisions."

Wisniewski, whose most well-known fight, perhaps, was when Shinya Aoki snapped his elbow at a Shooto event in Japan in 2005, runs the Duneland Vale Tudo gym in Northwest Indiana that is the home to UFC fighters Eddie Wineland and Darren Elkins. But it was likely his win over Wilson in April that put him back on the UFC's radar screen – like he hoped it would. Wilson returned after a yearlong layoff, though training with the Nogueira brothers in Brazil, and was dominated by Wisniewski – including a 30-26 – at Hoosier Fight Club 7 in April.

UFC on Versus 6 takes place Oct. 1 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. It will be the promotion's final live event on the Versus cable channel in a four-fight deal in 2011. The UFC will move its broadcast home to the Fox networks in 2012, including FX and Fuel TV.

Pat Barry Downplays Stefan Struve's Reach Advantage

Pat Barry is the shortest heavyweight in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc), and on Saturday night he's preparing to step into the Octagon with the UFC's tallest fighter, Stefan Struve (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/stefan/struve/649/).

But the 5-foot-11 Barry says he has no reason to fear the reach advantage of the 6-foot-11 Struve, saying that he has long since grown accustomed to fighting taller fighters, and noting that shorter men have found a way to beat Struve in the past.

"I don't think it'll be that big of a deal in this fight," Barry said of the reach difference. "Everybody Stefan comes across, fights and trains with is shorter than he is. Everybody that I come across, fight and train with is taller than I am. So this fight is going to be everything normal. How often does Stefan Struve come across someone taller than him? Not very often. And I haven't come across many heavyweights shorter than I am. So I think this is going to be pretty normal. I'm accustomed to guys being taller than I am and Stefan is accustomed to guys shorter than he is."

Still, Barry said he made a point of finding a tall sparring partner who could help him out in preparation for the Struve fight.

"I found a guy I call the black Struve," Barry said. "Maurice Green, who's 6-foot-9, he's a guy who came in for three weeks, a wrestler turned kickboxer out of Chicago. He was a guy I brought in in order to find my range and work my distance. And then we'd have Marty Morgan, who's 6-foot-3, stand on a stool while I threw punches and kicks at him."

Struve said he hopes he can prove Barry wrong and demonstrate that reach is a big deal in MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/). But he also acknowledged that he has made tactical mistakes in the past and allowed short fighters to get in close to him, most notably in Struve's most recent fight, a knockout loss to Travis Browne (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/travis/browne/1515/).

"I'm a lot taller than he is and I plan on using the reach, stand on the outside and pick him apart," Struve said. "The last fight I made a stupid mistake, I was coming in and he was coming in with his punch. I should have used my reach better, but I've been working with that with new coaches and I've improved a lot with that. I'm always working on getting better on the outside and trying to use my reach as I should. "

At 5-foot-8, Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/), the UFC bantamweight champion who will fight in Saturday's main event, is also accustomed to having a reach advantage in his fights. Cruz noted that Struve has a major reach advantage over Barry, and that Cruz himself will have a significant reach advantage against his opponent Saturday, the 5-foot-3 Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson.

"Reach is a big deal as long as you know how to use it," Cruz said. "A short fighter has to know how to fight like a short fighter, a tall fighter has to know how to fight like a tall fighter. It's very easy for a tall fighter to get sucked into the inside game. The only reason reach is worth anything is if you know how to use it and stay on the outside, force the other guy to telegraph kicks, telegraph punches, telegraph shots. I definitely think reach is a big advantage and something that can be used very effectively."

For Struve, the question is whether he can take that reach advantage he always has, and use it effectively -- as he too often hasn't. Barry is hoping the reach advantage turns out to be a non-factor.

Cruz Resets for Title Bout, While Johnson Hopes to Complete Underdog Story

On the surface, Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/) has settled into the role of champion nicely. He's successfully defended the bantamweight title three times, established himself as one of the sport's pound-for-pound best fighters, and headlines his second straight UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) event at Saturday night's UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson.

Yet Cruz seems to go out of his way to remind himself that it can all change in an instant. He hasn't splurged on a big house or fancy car. Instead, he lives on the cheap and saves his money for a rainy day that might never come. Those reminders serve as motivation for training, and the mindset extends even to his most prized possession: his title belt.

"Really, I'm not going out there to defend anything. I'm going out there to win something new every single time I go out and fight for a title," he said in a Thursday press conference from the Newseum in Washington D.C. "I don't own anything. It's always up for grabs, so I have to always stay on top and stay focused and go out there to win something new, so that's it. This will be like my first time winning it."

Should Cruz beat Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demetrious/johnson/1495/) (10-1) on Saturday, it may feel like a first time for him, but it would mark his fourth straight defense of the 135-pound belt, surpassing the three successful defenses made by Miguel Torres (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/miguel/torres/957/) when the belt was a WEC property.

Cruz has done it with a style all his own, mixing active striking and strong wrestling with endless stamina to wear down opponents over time. Overall, he's won nine straight, and on the strength of his 18-1 overall record, his .948 winning percentage is among the best in major MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/).

Rather than falling complacent though, Cruz continually surveys the landscape of his division and considers the oncoming challengers.

"Success feels good," he said. "I'm a fighter and this is what I do. I love to do it. I love my job. It's easy to stay motivated if you see all these maniacs coming up in my division. They all want to beat me up. What other motivation do I need?"

In Johnson, Cruz may be facing the fastest opponent he's ever faced. At just 5-foot-3 and with a 66-inch reach, Johnson has some distance to navigate, but if anyone can figure it out how to make an unlikely journey, it's the man that's nicknamed "Mighty Mouse."

Johnson's rise to one of the division's best has been a largely untold story, though it is one worth telling. He's not a pedigreed athlete with a following who got major breaks along the way. Though he wrestled throughout high school, he was never a state champion, and he had no other martial arts training when he first walked into a gym in October 2005, after watching the first season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Johnson grinded his way through the northwest regional circuit before debuting tin the WEC, and then he promptly dropped his first fight by decision. The setback hardly set him back, however, and he ran off a streak, winning four straight to earn a shot at Cruz. In his last two fights, he beat Miguel Torres and Kid Yamamoto, who were at one time the best lighter weight fighters in the world. Now Johnson has a chance to join those ranks, but there aren't a lot of believers out there; Cruz is as much as a 5-to-1 favorite.

"Story of my life," Johnson said. "I'm the smallest guy probably in the UFC. It is what it is. Everyone sees me as an underdog. I don't mind. It is what it is. Like I say, story of my life."

Yet Johnson is every bit the story of determination as Cruz. Until recently, he held a full-time job in a Tacoma, Washington recycling plant. During his May win over Torres, he suffered a broken bone in his leg, but he was still back to work at the plant on the following Monday. After accepting the title bout with Cruz, he gave up the job to prepare for the biggest opportunity of his life.

Like an underdog out of central casting, Johnson is quiet and polite in addition to being small. The UFC sat him next to 6-foot-11 Stefan Struve (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/stefan/struve/649/) on Thursday, further highlighting just how small he is. He didn't say much on Thursday, and even when he was asked questions, he often clipped his answer short when you had the feeling he might have had a little bit more to say. Like Cruz, perhaps he is holding it back for when it truly matters.

"You guys have all seen me fight, and you know what I do," he said. "I come out and bring the pace and I do my job. I prepare myself to win."

Pat Barry: Lifetime of Training Helps Battling Stefan Struve's Height, Reach

At 6-foot-11, Stefan Struve (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/stefan/struve/649/) towers over every fighter in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc); he's the tallest competitor fighting under the organization's banner. Meanwhile, his Saturday night opponent, Pat Barry (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/patrick/barry/382/), is 5-foot-11. That height differential will make for an interesting visual at UFC Live 6, and it will also make for a difficult obstacle for Barry to overcome.

Reaching his high target will be no easy feat for Barry, who with a 74.5-inch reach, will have a nearly 10-inch disadvantage in that category. But Barry has no concerns about what appears to be a daunting challenge. In fact, he says that the fight is no different than any other for either him or Struve.

"I'm accustomed to guys being taller than I am whereas Stefan is accustomed to guys being shorter than he is," Barry said recently. "So, like this is going to like play into our games, into our strategies, into our timing, reach, distance. Like this is going to play directly into what we've been training for every day since we started the job, like since we started this sport.

"So I don't think it's going to ... I don't think this fight is going to make it any different," he continued. "I mean, like I said, I don't think he's run across any - I don't think there's any 9-foot-tall kickboxers. It's something that his lifetime of training has prepared him for."

On Thursday, the two squared up for the first time for a pre-fight staredown photo opportunity, and yes, the shot looked a bit comedic. The two could barely keep straight faces, with both cracking smiles and laughing.

Part of those loose attitudes stem from their past, as the two have known each other for a few years and get along well outside of the cage. It has allowed them to fire off one-liners at each other all throughout the leadup to the bout, and on Thursday, Struve got in the best line at the pre-fight press conference.

When asked how he expected to defend Barry's high kicks, Struve nonchalantly answered, "Block it with my shin," a response that drew laughter from the fighters and media.

Earlier, Barry even poked fun at himself, saying when it came to ground skills, Struve could "lay on the ground and submit me while I was standing straight up."

But when the laughter ends and business gets serious, the two are expected to have one of the night's most intriguing fights, not only because of the size and reach differential, but because of their respective kickboxing backgrounds.

Barry has worked hard in his recent camps to round out his game, working wrestling and jiu-jitsu with his new DeathClutch teammates, including former UFC champ Brock Lesnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brock/lesnar/305/) and current Bellator (http://www.mmafighting.com/bellator/) champ Cole Konrad.

Meanwhile, Struve said he spent time sharpening up his striking, including working with renowned Romanian kickboxer Daniel Ghita.

So there is at least a friendly rivalry over who is the better striker, and neither man will want to be the first to try to take it to the ground. But "friendly" is the key word here. It's not personal for either one. At least on the surface, it's a test of everything that's come before. For Barry, the challenge is simple physics. And for Struve, it's beating Barry at his own game.

"I think that this could turn out to be a really awesome fight to where really when it comes down to it, my short arms won't matter," Barry said. "With his really long arms might, we might cancel each other out in a way and it might stand there and take a long time for the fight to get finished or maybe he can keep me on the end of a jab the way, you know, people eventually started keeping Mike Tyson away from them with a jab. Like, who knows? I mean it could be a little bit of anything. Anything could happen that night. So I mean range, it can be good, but at the same time it can be bad, too."

UFC Live Cruz vs. Johnson Weigh-In Results: Both Bantamweights at 135

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/) and challenger Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demetrious/johnson/1495/) were both on weight for Saturday night's title fight when they stepped on the scale Friday at the UFC Live weigh-in.

Both Cruz and Johnson weighed in right at the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds.

The largely uneventful weigh-ins were lightened up by 5-foot-11 heavyweight Pat Barry standing on a stool to stare down with his 6-foot-11 opponent, Stefan Struve (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/stefan/struve/649/), as UFC announcer Joe Rogan declared, "This is the biggest height discrepancy for any UFC fight ever."
