Dan Henderson TKOs Fedor Emelianenko in Strikeforce Main Event

The unthinkable has happened in mixed martial arts: Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) has lost three in a row.

Fedor, once widely recognized as the best fighter MMA had ever seen, was beaten by Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) at Saturday night's Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) event, with Henderson coming from behind in dramatic fashion: Henderson appeared to be in trouble on the ground, and then an instant later he pulled free and hit Fedor right in the chin from behind. Fedor went limp and fell face-first to the canvas, and referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight.

The whole fight was 4 minutes, 12 seconds of wild action.

Fedor quickly recovered from the punch that knocked him down and appeared to be defending himself when Dean stepped in, and after the fight he said he thought the stoppage was early. But replays showed that Fedor seemed to be out for a moment before coming to, and that made it the correct call for Dean to end the fight.

Henderson was elated with one of the biggest wins of his career.

"I've been a huge fan of Fedor's forever," Henderson said. "I respect him so much as a fighter, what he's done for the sport. For me, that's a huge accomplishment. ... As a fan of Fedor's, I hope he keeps fighting."

The fight started off at a thrilling pace, with both men landing hard punches in the first few seconds. Henderson had Fedor hurt early, and Fedor clinched to take a breather, which slowed down the pace of the fight. Henderson controlled Fedor against the cage for about two full minutes before they finally separated, and then it was crazy back-and-forth action the rest of the way.

Fedor landed one of his trademark looping punches to Henderson's head, seeming to hurt Henderson, and Fedor got on top of Henderson on the ground and hit him a couple of times. But Henderson brilliantly saw his opening and took it, and he ended the fight in dramatic fashion.

He may also have ended Fedor's career: No one ever could have envisioned that Fedor would have lost three in a row, and the questions about his retirement will now only heat up. All Fedor would say after the fight to those questions was that any decisions about his future are in God's hands.

On Saturday night, it was Henderson whose hands finished Fedor in a great round of action.

Miesha Tate Submits Marloes Coenen in Strikeforce Title Fight

Miesha Tate (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/miesha/tate/1317/) is the new champion of Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/)'s 135-pound women's division after forcing Marloes Coenen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/marloes/coenen/1429/) to tap out with a brilliant arm triangle choke in the fourth round of a fight that had been a back-and-forth battle on the ground.

Tate's submission was a thing of beauty: She had Coenen in side control on the ground and briefly looked like she was going to transition into full mount, but instead she transitioned to the other side and sunk in the choke. After a brief struggle, Coenen had no choice but to tap.

The fight hadn't been a crowd-pleader in the first three rounds, but the fans were thrilled when Tate got the choke in the fourth. It was the first time Coenen has been submitted in 24 professional fights.

The first three rounds were a tactical ground fight:

-- Midway through the first round Coenen appeared to have Tate in trouble with a choke on the ground, but Tate managed to both pull her head free and get into side control. From there Tate spent the rest of the round on top, and that may have been enough to earn her the round on the judges' scorecards.

-- In the second round they went to the ground again, and once again Coenen had Tate in a tough position, taking her back with three and a half minutes on the clock. Coenen locked in a body triangle and seemed to be in excellent position to finish the fight with a rear-naked choke, but instead she held Tate's back for the rest of the round without ever getting close to a submission. It was a round Coenen clearly deserved to win, but she had to feel disappointed that she didn't finish the fight.

-- In the first minute of the third round Tate caught a Coenen kick and took her down, and for most of the round Tate was on top on the ground. Coenen briefly reversed things at the end of the round, but it was a round that Tate deserved to win.

And then came the fourth, when Tate sunk in that beautiful choke. It hadn't been a thrilling fight to that point, but the ending was worth the wait.

Fedor Emelianenko Disputes Referee's Decision After Tough Loss

Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) was stoic, as he always is, after losing to Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) at Saturday night's Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) main event. But Fedor -- the mixed martial arts legend always known by one name -- was also upset.

Emelianenko, the man who looked invincible in the ring and in the cage for a decade, said after his third consecutive loss that he believes referee Herb Dean stopped the fight and awarded the technical knockout victory to Henderson too quickly.

Asked if he thought Dean -- who's widely regarded as the best referee in MMA -- made a mistake, Fedor answered in the affirmative.

"It seems to me, yes, objectively, I was ready to continue fighting," Fedor said. "So, yes."

But few in attendance at the Sears Centre in suburban Chicago seemed to agree with Fedor's assessment. In MMA, the referee has to stop the fight immediately if a fighter can't defend himself, and there was a brief instant when Henderson hit Fedor hard in the chin, and Fedor went limp and fell face first into the canvas. Although Fedor recovered quickly and appeared prepared to defend himself, by that point Dean had already charged in to stop the bout.

For his part, Henderson said the punch he landed to Fedor's chin was a simple example of seeing an opening and taking advantage.

"I saw an opening for a nice uppercut when he was on his hands and knees and that just dropped him," Henderson said. "I don't think he was expecting that at that time."

And Henderson said there's no doubt in his mind that Dean did the right thing, and that if Dean hadn't stepped in at that moment, Henderson would have finished Fedor soon enough.

"You'd have to ask Herb Dean about it," Henderson said. "I thought it was a pretty good stoppage. I wasn't going anywhere if the ref didn't push me off. It would have been done pretty quick anyway."

Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker said that he was watching the fight just like a fan, and that he thought Dean did exactly the right thing in jumping in to stop the fight as soon as Fedor went limp on the ground.

"When I watched the main event, I watched it with everybody here," Coker said. "It looked like when Dan hit him with the uppercut it flattened Fedor out, he was hurt, he was injured and so the referee did the right thing. . . . It was a correct stoppage."

Fedor seemed puzzled afterward about what has gone wrong in his MMA career, but he also cautioned his fans that they have to accept that he wasn't going to remain the undisputed top fighter in the world forever.

"I'm not a machine," Fedor said. "I'm not a robot. There are good moments and bad moments."

For Fedor, Herb Dean's stoppage was a bad moment. But that doesn't make it a bad call.

I think Fedor did get stunned by that totally unexpected uppercut but recovered. In between the time fedor dropped and recovered Herb Dean decided to join in the mix. When Fedor had turned around and Dan was already attacking again because Dan didn't see Fedor was out it was already too late. Herb Dean was already in the middle and it was too late.

I think it was an unfortunate conglomoration between the timing of Herb Dean and Fedor trying to recover to guard. Because A) The way Fedor dropped would've made any referee step in but B) The way Fedor recovered could've meant he could've gotten back to guard, but we will never no that because Herb Dean was in side-control.

Whether the stoppage was early or not, it certainly is an acceptable stoppage. Fedor did go limp, and that was what made Herb Dean jump in.

Herb Dean didn't have his night. Missing a tapout due to a RNC, not breaking up uneventful clinchwork and a dubious stoppage. Not hating on Herb Dean, I'm just saying if you told me it was Mazaggatti I would've believed you as well.

It is what it is. Fedor is three down and has no bargaining rights in the negotiation for his first Zuffa deal. The ball is in Dana White's corner, and it aint looking too fresh.

Scott Coker: Fedor vs. Henderson 'Probably' Best Fight in Strikeforce History

On paper, Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) CEO Scott Coker knew he had history sitting right in front of him. And after Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/StrikeforceFedorvsHenderson/) on Saturday night, his suspicions were confirmed.

Leading up to the superfight between legends Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) and Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/), Coker said he couldn't say without question the fight was the best Strikeforce had ever put together until after the final bell at Sears Centre Arena outside Chicago. After all, a dud of a main event without any fireworks would have just meant great potential, but a missed opportunity.

But after Henderson staged a remarkable comeback and essentially knocked out Fedor from his knees, Coker was finally prepared to say Fedor-Henderson goes to the front of the pack for best fight in the promotion's history.

"If you look at that fight, I think it stands right up there," Coker told MMA Fighting (http://www.mmafighting.com/) at the post-fight press conference. "If you look back at the history of Strikeforce, which is relatively a newer company, I think the ones that stand out in my mind are, in our early days, Frank Shamrock (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/shamrock/170/) fighting Cung Le (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cung/le/1001/) – that was an unbelievable matchup. And Nick Diaz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nick/diaz/506/) fighting Paul Daley (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/paul/daley/967/) this year – unbelievable fight.

"And tonight, I think this one probably tops those two. So arguably one of the best fights in the history of our company."

Diaz and Daley fought in April for Diaz's welterweight title. After Daley lit his opponent up and had him on the ropes, Diaz mounted a comeback for the ages, getting a stoppage from strikes with just three seconds left in the first round. Le stopped Shamrock in March 2008, battering his right arm with kicks until it was broken, to win the middleweight title.

With such lofty expectations of Fedor (31-4, 1-3 Strikeforce) and Henderson (28-8, 3-1 Strikeforce) going into the fight, Coker knew there was a chance – albeit a small one – the fight might not live up to all it was being marketed as: a "clash of the titans" and "once in a lifetime" fight.

"It definitely lived up to the billing, so my hat's off to Fedor and Hendo," Coker said. "And my question is, is there anything Dan Henderson can't do? I want to know, because this guy is unbelievable."

After the fight, Fedor called referee Herb Dean's stoppage into question, saying he believed he could have continued. But Henderson said even if it came early, it was only a matter of seconds before it would have been stopped because he wasn't going anywhere from the top position he was using to rain down strikes. And Coker, too, said he agreed with the stoppage.

"It looked like when (Henderson) hit him with that uppercut, it flattened Fedor out," Coker said. "I felt that his legs did go, and he was hurt – he was injured. So therefore, I think the referee did the correct thing. He watched carefully to see what the response was, and at that time Dan was doing what Dan does. Thirty seconds earlier, it was Fedor doing that to Dan. But I think it was the correct stoppage."

Henderson, Strikeforce's light heavyweight champion, believes the win was perhaps the biggest of his career, a career that includes Pride wins over Wanderlei Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/wanderlei/silva/275/) and Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/), memorable knockouts of Michael Bisping and Renato "Babalu" Sobral, and his light heavyweight title win over Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante in March.

"I'd put it right up on top," Henderson said. "I admire Fedor as a fighter, and he's very dangerous. This means a lot more to me than some of the victories that I've had, personally. But I'm a huge fan of his, and I hope that he continues."

The fight was the last on the contracts for both Henderson and Fedor. And while there were instantly questions about a possible retirement looming for Fedor, who now has three straight losses after nearly 10 years without a defeat, Coker said he hopes both will be back in the promotion.

"As far as fighting in Strikeforce, I hope we have them both back," he said.

Unified rules 14 F "Effective grappling is judged by considering the amount of successful executions of a legal takedown and reversals. Examples of factors to consider are take downs from standing position to mount position, passing the guard to mount position, and bottom position fighters using an active threatening guard"

Unified rules 14 G Fighting area control is judged by determining who is dictating the pace, location and position of the bout. Examples of factors to consider are countering a grappler's attempt at takedown by remaining standing and legally striking, taking down an opponent to force a ground fight, creating threatening submission attempts, passing the guard to achieve mount, and creating striking opportunities.
Het hoort gescoord te worden maar dat doen ze nooit. Daley had 8 succesvolle TDD's en Woodley heeft 2 successvolle TD's.

Herb Dean Defends His Stoppage in Henderson-Fedor Fight

When Dan Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) made Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) fall face-first into the canvas with a hard shot to the chin on Saturday night, referee Herb Dean had a split-second decision to make on whether or not to step in and stop the fight. Dean chose to stop it, awarding Henderson the victory by technical knockout, but Emelianenko said after the fight that Dean's decision was the wrong one, and that he could have kept fighting.

On Monday's MMA Hour, Dean defended his call, saying that Fedor was unconscious when Henderson connected with the punch, and as a result Dean had no choice but to stop the fight.

"I saw Dan hit Fedor with a shot, Fedor fell down flat on his face, face down, his palms were facing up and I saw Dan continuing to punch," Dean said. "He hit him with, I believe, three punches, and I didn't see Fedor doing any movement. It seemed to me he was unconscious. I came in to stop the fight."

Dean said that although he had to make the decision instantly, he watched the replay of the stoppage and stands by his decision with the benefit of hindsight.

"When I made my decision to stop the fight, Fedor was face down, unconscious. When I touched Dan, Fedor was still face down. Once I touch him the fight is over," Dean said.

Dean has also faced some criticism from fans who said Henderson illegally hit Fedor in the back of the head at the end of the fight, but Dean said he saw no fouls there.

"I saw punches that may have been close," Dean said. "But I wouldn't have called those fouls because the way the action was moving, I couldn't say that he intentionally targeted that area."

Ultimately, Dean said, he's very comfortable with his decision to protect Fedor from further damage.

"Fedor was unconscious and unable to defend himself," Dean said.

Although fans watching from home didn't know it, Dean's stoppage was actually the second controversial call he made on Saturday night. In an un-televised undercard bout between Bobby Green (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/bobby/green/1683/) and JZ Cavalcante, some fans thought Green had tapped out while Cavalcante had him in a choke. In reality, Dean says, the motion some fans thought was tapping was actually Green signaling to Dean that he was still conscious and not in danger of passing out from the choke.

"It was a very clear thumbs up," Dean said. "I got down close to the mat so I could see his face, made some effort to communicate with him, and he gave me a thumbs-up, clear as day."

Dean said he knows fans don't always agree with referees' decisions, noting that "Sometimes in doing my job I'm not going to be a popular guy." But after a night on which Dean faced major questions about the way he refereed, Dean says he can stand by the calls he made.
