Thursday FOX press conference to include UFC executives and fighters (http://mmajunkie.com/news/24862/thursday-fox-press-conference-to-include-ufc-executives-and-fighters.mma)

by Steven Marrocco on Aug 17, 2011 at 9:20 pm ET
http://mmajunkie.com/dyn/images/executives/dana-white-50.jpgIn a gathering that's widely expected to announce a deal between FOX and the UFC, executives from the network channel today announced a press conference that takes place Thursday in Los Angeles.

A source close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) UFC executives Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC president Dana White are expected to attend.

Additionally, executives from FOX and its subsidiary FX will be present, and several UFC fighters may also tag along.

MMAWeekly.com (http://mmaweekly.com/fox-schedules-major-press-conference-for-thursday-gsp-and-other-major-ufc-fighters-head-to-la) reported earlier today that welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and No. 1 light-heavyweight contender and former champ Rashad Evans are headed to the City of Angels to participate in the event.

Although White has denied a pending deal with the network, a source with knowledge of negotiations said the broadcast partnership is a done deal.

On Tuesday "SportsBusiness Journal" reported the promotion has inked a multi-year deal with FOX that will see its content, including up to four events in prime time, distributed on the channel's multiple broadcast platforms.

"Did I comment when 'Wall Street Journal' said we were buying G4?" White wrote Wednesday in a text message to MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/news/24840/reports-ufc-headed-to-fox-after-inking-multi-year-deal.mma). "You guys will know when we have a TV deal."

According to the "SBJ" report, the UFC's flagship TV property, "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series, will air on basic-cable channel FX while the smaller Fuel TV channel "will wind up with some UFC content."

Talks between the UFC and another reported suitor, NBC/Universal, broke down recently, and the promotion's longtime broadcast partner, Spike TV, has been out of the renewal picture for some time, the report said.

The FOX deal is reportedly valued as high as $90 million per year and is believed to have a term of seven to eight years.

The UFC's contracts with Spike TV and Versus are set to expire at the end of 2011.

This past June, the "Wall Street Journal" reported the UFC was looking to acquire a controlling interest in the NBC-owned G4 channel after Spike balked at $155 million per-year increase in licensing fees.

UFC on Fox Press Conference Video

Fox Sports will hold a press conference on Thursday for what it says is one of the biggest announcements in the history of the network -- and what is expected to be the official announcement of a deal that will put UFC fights on Fox. We'll carry the live video right here at MMAFighting.com.

For as big an announcement as this is for Fox, it's even bigger for the UFC, which has said for years that it considers getting the right network television deal done to be a major step toward achieving mainstream acceptance.

The press conference starts at 1 PM ET and the video is below.

Spike TV Says Goodbye to the UFC

More than any single business move the UFC has made, getting The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV was instrumental to keeping the company afloat and bringing it to a wider audience. But now the UFC-Spike partnership is coming to an end.

In a statement released just minutes before the UFC and Fox are expected to announce a new television agreement, Spike confirmed that its partnership with the UFC is coming to an end.

"The Ultimate Fighter season 14 in September will be our last," the statement says. "We are increasing our commitment to distinctive, original series that we own such as Auction Hunters and Bar Rescue, which are delivering on our goal to reach a broader audience. Our 6-year partnership with the UFC has been incredibly beneficial in building both our brands, and we wish them all the best in the future."

Although the statement doesn't say anything about other UFC programming, like live Fight Night shows and old fights shown on UFC Unleashed, all indications are that the UFC and Spike will be finished as a partnership after the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter wraps up.

At the time they made their partnership, the UFC and Spike were great partners, and both parties have grown significantly through the years. But now it makes more sense for both parties to go their separate ways, with the UFC focusing on its deal with Fox, and Spike focusing on shows like Auction Hunters and Bar Rescue.

C. I really don't have a clue

Expect competition.....
The door has not yet even slammed behind the UFC and there are rumblings that SpikeTV might move to replace it with Bellator. There were additional recent reports that the new ProElite venture is also already thinking about television, though its executives have said that would be premature. One thing is certain however, if the UFC and Fox can maintain a successful partnership for any amount of time, you’ll see new competitors start to appear, as the other networks will certainly want to get their own taste of the action and end up playing copycat.

UFC and FOX Officially Announce Details of Landmark 7-Year Broadcast Deal

In a landmark announcement that marks the move of MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/)'s leading promotion to network television for the first time, the UFC and FOX on Thursday confirmed a deal that would put UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) programming on the FOX family of networks for the next seven years.

Under the terms of the agreement, FOX will broadcast four UFC events a year on broadcast television and six events on FX, their basic cable station that is available on 99,369,000 homes, almost the same number of homes that receive Spike.

The Ultimate Fighter will also air on FX in a revamped, live version, while other FOX-owned entities like FUEL and FOX Deportes will also carry UFC programming.

The historic deal was jointly announced at the FOX studios in Los Angeles by FOX Sports chairman and CEO David Hill, FOX Sports media group co-president and COO Eric Shanks, FX president John Landgraf, UFC president Dana White, and Zuffa chairman Lorenzo Fertitta.

"Television is about the next big thing, and that's why we're here this morning," said Hill, who added that the UFC was "something we firmly believe in."

Under terms of the deal, the first UFC event on FOX will air on November 12, while additional UFC programming on FOX networks launches on January 2012.

White lauded the deal as the highlight of his tenure leading the UFC.

"This was it for me, this is what I always wanted," he said. "This is what I always felt was the pinnacle for us here in the United States. Not just to be on the No. 1 network in the country, but to be on a network with all the other real big sports: NFL, Major League Baseball, NASCAR (http://motorsports.fanhouse.com/), etc."

The deal was brokered by the UFC's agent Ari Emanuel. Though financial terms weren't disclosed, Sports Business Daily reported on Tuesday that UFC will receive around $90 million per year in rights fees.

For a time, the UFC reportedly looked into launching its own network, a fact that was acknowledged during the press conference by Fertitta. But after considering all the available options including competing network offers, the FOX deal best fit their goals and needs.

"I think that a UFC channel would be very successful," he said. "But we sat down, thought about it a little bit and said, 'You know what we do best? Put on great fights.' We're not in the business of running a network. And as far as the life cycle of the company and where we're at, it just made more sense for us to do this deal with FOX."

FOX executives said they were drawn to the UFC by their ability to attract the coveted male to 18-34 year old demographic. Hill, who had in the past voiced no interest in MMA, said he had changed his tune over the past few years as he watched UFC continue to grow and market their brand and fighters.

White said that the UFC will use the deal as a "fresh start" to revamp all of their offerings, including pay-per-views.

The most significant changes may come to TUF, which will take place over a 12-week time frame and include live fights each week. As part of the deal, TUF will be moved to Friday nights. Each episode will feature taped footage from the four to five days prior, but the match between advancing fighters will be live. In addition to that, coaches will conduct their own training camps during the time and then fight at the end of the season.

While in the past, a network deal may have been undone by an advertisers unwillingness to sponsor mixed martial arts programming, FOX executives say that stigma is nearly gone.

"We would not have gone into the deal if we hadn't canvassed large group of advertisers who are 100 percent behind it," Hill said. "There might be one or two companies that have got a 'do not buy.' There is a hell of a lot more who have a 'do buy' on this sport."

Under the terms of the deal, the UFC will continue to control production of its events, though FOX will have input. FOX will control pre- and post-fight shows.

All in all there will be 36 UFC fights a year on FOX-owned networks, which includes the 26 live TUF fights, 6 FX "Fight Night" events and 4 major events on FOX. White said that the promotion still considers itself a pay-per-view company, but there is no question that there will be many more expectations and much more scrutiny as a result of the major deal.

Landgraf said the deal makes great sense as their research showed that their is an 80 percent overlap between fans of the UFC and FX viewers.

"I can't emphasize how thrilled I am to get this deal done," Hill said. "If you look where Frank, Dana and Lorenzo have taken the group in last decade, imagine what's going to happen in the next decade. I think the growth potential is explosive."

UFC on FOX to Premiere on November 12

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s first foray into network television won't take long. During Thursday's announcement of a newly signed seven-year deal with FOX, UFC president Dana White also announced that the first event on the broadcast network will come on Nov. 12.

The event will likely take place in Anaheim, California, White said.

The card itself is still being worked on.

Under the terms of the deal, FOX will broadcast four events per calendar year, while FX while host six "Fight Night" events.

The FOX shows are expected to be higher caliber offerings than "Fight Night" events, according to UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta.

"You may not have championships on every card," he said. "There may be championships on some of the time. But I can tell you that we're going to deliver big fights on broadcast network, that's for sure. Fights that matter, that mean something, and there's a lot hanging on the line."

The Nov. 12 event will give UFC a stretch of four straight Saturdays with a major show. It kicks off October 29, when Nick Diaz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nick/diaz/506/) tries to wrest the UFC welterweight title from Georges St-Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/) at UFC 137 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+137/). The next weekend, the UFC flies to the UK, where Chris Leben (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/leben/414/) and Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/) will tangle in the main event of UFC 138. Then, it's back to the U.S. for the UFC on FOX debut, followed by a trip to nearby San Jose, California for UFC 139 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+139/), with heavyweight king Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) defending the belt against Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/).

Lorenzo Fertitta: "Obviously, Goldie and Rogan are going to be the main broadcast team for our big fights, pay-per-views, fights on Fox, fights on FX. Some additional programming, you know, were going to probably have to bring in some new talent because it's just not physically possible for these guys to do that number of events and still have a life. Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza First Fight Announced for UFC on FOX Debut

Hours after the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) announced its major deal with FOX (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/08/18/ufc-and-fox-officially-announce-details-of-landmark-7-year-broad/), the promotion's matchmaking machine is in full swing.

The promotion confirmed Dustin Poirier (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dustin/poirier/1595/) vs. Pablo Garza (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/pablo/garza/1653/) for the premiere edition of UFC on FOX. The event will be Nov. 12 at The Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The pair are two of the UFC's quickest-rising young featherweights.

The 22-year-old Poirier has captured his last four fights in improving to 10-1 overall. In his last outing, he defeated Jason Young (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jason/young/1802/) via unanimous decision at UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+131/). Since moving over from the WEC, he's won both of his starts, also defeating Josh Grispi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/josh/grispi/1084/). The fight with Grispi also marked his featherweight debut.

Garza is 11-1 overall. His last bout was April's massive UFC 129 show. Garza authored one of the night's most memorable moments, when he caught Yves Jabouin (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yves/jabouin/1060/) in a flying triangle, a move that earned him a $129,000 Submission of the Night bonus.

Prior to that, he had knocked out Fredson Paixao (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fredson/paixao/1042/) at The Ultimate FIghter 12 Finale. Like Poirier, Garza was formerly a lightweight that shifted down a weight class.

The UFC did not specify if the fight would be on the network broadcast or undercard.

Ratings 2010 for all sports-related programming:
1.Foxsports 10.1 million viewers on average
2.CBS 7.2 million viewers on average
3.NBC 6 million viewers on average
4.ABC 5.5 million viewers on average
5.ESPN 1.2 million viewers on average

Ratings 2010 for NFL
Foxsports averaged on 20.1 million viewers.
