Ben Henderson vs. Clay Guida Added to UFC on FOX Debut Event

A lightweight scrap featuring a pair of the division's top-rated competitors has been added to the card of November 12's UFC on FOX premiere.

The tilt will feature Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) taking on Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/). The bout, first reported by Yahoo! Sports's Kevin Iole (http://twitter.com/#%21/KevinI/status/111165301558751232), has been confirmed to MMA Fighting by sources with knowledge of the situation, though not yet officially announced by the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc).

Henderson has won both of his starts since moving over from the WEC, where he was at one time the organization's lightweight champion. His consecutive defeats of Mark Bocek (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/bocek/452/) and more recently Jim Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jim/miller/509/) have come in decisive fashion, rocketing Henderson up the divisional rankings.

A winner of 12 of his last 13 fights, Henderson stands at 14-2 overall.

Guida rallied from two straight losses in 2009 to post four straight wins, most recently derailing Anthony Pettis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/pettis/1069/) from a possible title shot in a unanimous decision victory. He also holds wins over Takanori Gomi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/takanori/gomi/721/), Shannon Gugerty (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shannon/gugerty/465/) and Rafael dos Anjos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rafael/dos-anjos/532/) during that stretch. Guida is 29-8 overall.

UFC on FOX takes place on Nov. 12 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will feature a main event of heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) vs. Junior dos Santos. However, that one-hour scheduled broadcast is for now guaranteeing only Velasquez-dos Santos airtime.

While Henderson vs. Guida is likely to be the co-main event, the fight has not yet been guaranteed a live television airing, according to sources with knowledge of the information, although given its importance, the UFC is likely to find airtime for it somehow.

As Velasquez and dos Santos Prepare, Commercials Sell Out for UFC on FOX Debut

Tickets have yet to go on sale for the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s maiden voyage on broadcast television, but the promotion can already boast a sellout in perhaps its most important indicator: television ad sales.

Just one month after the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) and FOX announced its seven-year deal will begin with a Nov. 12 event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, the network has already sold out all of its existing commercial slots for the show.

The quick sellout is a positive sign that blue-chip, corporate sponsors are willing to test the waters. In turn, that should mean new opportunities for fighters as well.

"We've gotten more credibility now because we're on FOX with all these big sports leagues," UFC president Dana White said. "The fact these guys are reaching out to these other sponsors and they've had a great response is big not only for us, but for the fighters, too. This will trickle down to everybody. It's a big deal and yes, it's been great and it's only going to get better."

White and FOX Sports president Eric Shanks announced the ad sellout at a press conference launching the event at the W Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, California.

When asked what type of ratings FOX was expecting from the debut event, Shanks joked that "we have to beat the Two and a Half Men premiere from last night," a show that drew nearly 30 million viewers.

While he wouldn't offer a specific number, he acknowledged that the ad sales are a positive indicator in the interest for the event.

"So the response from the ad sales community has been unbelievable, and we think that'll carry forward to next season," Shanks said.

Meanwhile, Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) were the main attractions, sitting on a stage with "UFC on FOX" and FOX logos behind them.

White reiterated what he's said several times since making the bout, that he specifically chose the fight with total belief that the UFC heavyweight champion and No. 1 contender would put on a show.

"I can guarantee you if this fight goes 30 seconds or 30 minutes, this is going to be a fight right here," White said, eyeing his fighters.

While for Velasquez, it was a relatively short 330-mile trip from his home base of San Jose to Hollywood, dos Santos flew from Brazil to take part. It was clear from the crowd reception that Velasquez will be a massive crowd favorite come fight time, something dos Santos (13-1) acknowledged early on.

"I feel great," he said. "It's good to receive good energy from the guys. It doesn't matter if the people are rooting for me or not. It matters that they're here cheering for the fight, for MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/)."

The unbeaten Velasquez hasn't fought since winning the title from Brock Lesnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brock/lesnar/305/) in a first-round TKO last October. Ironically, that bout was also at the Anaheim Center, and White noted the atmosphere in the arena was electric, something the UFC is expecting again on Nov. 12. After recovering from shoulder surgery, Velasquez said he is engaging in three daily workout sessions that include weight-lifting, sparring, jiu-jitsu and technical refinements.

All of that, stems from his belief in his opponent's skills.

"It's definitely my toughest task," he said. "dos Santos is a great fighter. He has great hands, great power, great boxing. He's looked really tough out there in his previous fights, and it's definitely going to be a tough fight."

While Velasquez and dos Santos will get most of the ink up until fight time, lightweight contenders Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) and Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) will tangle in the co-main event. White said it's so far undecided where that will air. There is a chance it could end up on the FOX broadcast, or on Facebook, or elsewhere, but for now, the UFC has its full attention on the main event.

"The pressure is on us to deliver," he said. "Meaning [it's on] us and FOX to put out an event that night like you've never seen when it comes to combat sports. [Velasquez and dos Santos] are going to do what they always do. They've been delivering for 10 years, and that's why we're sitting up here today."

While White admitted feeling the pressure, both the champ and challenger said for them, it's just another day at the office. Despite the millions of eyes on them, new sponsors with their checkbooks at the ready, and the belt on the line, for them, it's just another fight.

"I feel no pressure," dos Santos, a big smile crossing his face. "It's what I do. It's what I love to do, and I'll be ready for sure to make a good show."

Alex Caceres Drops to Bantamweight for Cole Escovedo at UFC on Fox Debut

Alex Caceres will make a weight change in the hope of getting back in the win column.

"Bruce Leeroy," the 23-year-old fan favorite from Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter," will drop to bantamweight to meet Cole Escovedo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cole/escovedo/960/) at the first UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on Fox event next month. The UFC announced the fight Wednesday night, saying verbal agreements are in place for the fight.

UFC on Fox 1 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConFox1/) will take place Nov. 12 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and will mark the first UFC broadcast under its new television deal with the Fox network, which doesn't officially begin until 2012. Headlining the card is a heavyweight title fight between champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and top contender Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/).

Caceres (5-4, 0-2 UFC) is likely in a do-or-die situation in his UFC career. In featherweight bouts, Caceres loss to Mackens Semerzier (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mackens/semerzier/1142/) in his official UFC debut in March, then Jimy Hettes at UFC on Versus 5 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/ufc+on+versus+5/) in August, both by rear naked choke. In the latter bout, Caceres took the fight on less than two weeks notice when Leonard Garcia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/leonard/garcia/384/) bowed out with an injury. While on Season 12 of TUF, Caceres competed as a lightweight.

Escovedo (17-8, 0-2 UFC) will return less than two months from his last fight, a TKO loss to Takeya Mizugaki (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/takeya/mizugaki/1051/) at UFC 135 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+135/) last month in Denver. Prior to that, the former featherweight lost to Renan Barao (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/renan/barao/1527/) at UFC 130 in May. Also at 0-2 in the promotion, Escovedo probably needs a win to avoid a pink slip. He has lost four of his last five fights.

Aside from the heavyweight title fight at UFC on Fox 1, the card will feature a lightweight contenders fight between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson. Only the Velasquez-dos Santos fight is guaranteed to air on the one-hour Fox broadcast. No official broadcast plans for Guida-Henderson or the rest of the undercard fights have been announced.

Brown Pride.

All UFC on FOX Fights Before Title Bout Will Air on Facebook, FOX.com

LAS VEGAS -- One fight on the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s debut outing on network television is likely to be the most watched fight in North American TV history. The others going on that same night though won't even find their way on to broadcast television.

UFC president Dana White on Thursday said that every fight under the main event heavyweight title match will air on Facebook and FOX.com.

That means that even the possible No. 1 contenders fight pitting Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) and Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) won't find its way on to TV. White said that the promotion considered putting the fights on ION, but ultimately decided against it.

"The way that we looked at this thing as we sat down and figured it out, it just made sense to do this fight on FOX and put the prelims on the internet," he said.

The UFC's deal with FOX doesn't officially kick in until January 2012, but the November 12 event will function as an introduction to the UFC, as a big audience is expected to tune in and watch heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) attempt to defend his crown against Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/). The one-hour special begins at 9 pm ET.

Meanwhile, because the UFC's current deal with Spike has yet to expire, they can not air fights on a competing cable network. That left few options, and while ION was considered, the UFC ultimately has chosen to put all its efforts behind the major main event. In related news, FOX will air a "UFC Primetime" on Velasquez and dos Santos this Sunday following their scheduled broadcast of NFL football.

No Guaranteed Title Shot for Clay Guida-Ben Henderson Winner ... Yet

LAS VEGAS -- Up until now, it's been assumed that the winner of UFC on Fox 1's co-main event will be the next man up to face current lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/edgar/451/).

But that's no guarantee.

UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White told MMA Fighting that on the heels of Edgar's stirring comeback knockout win over Gray Maynard (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gray/maynard/374/), he's yet to determine the champion's next challenge.

Asked whether it was a sure thing that the Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) vs. Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) winner would earn a chance to fight for the belt, White initially said no.

But that's not necessarily his final answer. Moments later, he clarified his thoughts, saying that his unrelenting schedule hasn't afforded him the opportunity to sit down, examine the situation and make a decision.

"I don't know. I have no idea," he said. "We're going to have to see what happens. I haven't even thought about it. You have to understand, the only thing I'm thinking about now is FOX. I've just got to get past this event. Everything else is taking a back seat. All the other s--- will work itself out."

After a decision win over Anthony Pettis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/pettis/1069/), Guida (29-11) is currently riding a four-fight win streak while Henderson (14-2) has won seven of his eight fights under the Zuffa banner, most recently dominating Jim Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jim/miller/509/) en route to a decision at UFC 129.

Despite the possible importance of the bout, the Guida-Henderson bout will not be televised, airing on Facebook.com and FOX.com (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/10/27/all-ufc-on-fox-fights-before-title-bout-will-air-on-facebook-fo/).

Still, the Guida-Henderson winner seems like the most likely option for Edgar. Other possibilities include the Donald Cerrone (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/donald/cerrone/1076/)-Dennis Siver (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dennis/siver/366/) winner from Saturday night, or Gilbert Melendez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gilbert/melendez/778/) if he is brought over from Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/). Both Jim Miller and Melvin Guillard recently had win streaks snapped that likely removed them from the conversation.

UFC on FOX Devoted Solely to Title Fight, but dos Santos Says It Won't Go Distance

The calendar has finally turned to November, and the countdown is officially on for the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX premiere. Since signing the deal in August, much of the company's attention has been focused on its new partnership, and now, the days will quickly wind down until it's showtime. There is still much work to do until then, but UFC president Dana White says that one thing not on his list of concerns is the night's main event fight.

Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and challenger Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) both safely made it through their respective training camps and are primed to seize the spotlight afforded them.

At least to dos Santos (13-1), he doesn't expect that spotlight to last very long. Even though the UFC has confirmed that one and only one fight will be shown on the broadcast, dos Santos doesn't plan on taking all 25 minutes afforded to him.

"I would be ready for five rounds if it went to five rounds, but personally, I don't think the fight will go five rounds," he said through his interpreter during a Wednesday teleconference. "Both Cain and myself are aggressive fighters. Both of us go on offense. We look to fight. We don't dodge fights.

"I know Cain's been out of the octagon for a while, but I also know he's a phenomenal fighter," he continued. "He's a professional, and I'm sure he's going to bring his best inside that octagon and he's going to be ready. I don't want to fight an injured Cain Velasquez. I want to fight the best Cain Velasquez. That's what I'm preparing for. I don't think he'd take a fight if he couldn't give it his all. It's going to be his first title defense. It's a very big fight for him. I look forward to meeting up with the champion Cain Velasquez at his best."

Velasquez (9-0) says that he will indeed be at his best, his shoulder at full power and range of motion after surgery, rehabilitation and a full camp.

Velasquez stopped short of predicting a stoppage-shortened fight, but given the historic nature of the fight and the UFC's trust in the fighters by placing them in the honored roles, he expects a scrap worthy of the attention it's receiving.

"I'm hoping to make it an exciting fight for the fans," he said. "dos Santos is a great opponent, and we're definitely going to go out there and just throw down. That's pretty much it. People love to see that."

At least by the numbers, dos Santos has some precedent for his prediction. Both fighters have been big finishers throughout their careers. The challenger dos Santos has 11 stoppages in his 13 victories while the undefeated champion Velasquez has stopped opponents in eight of his nine wins. Velasquez is currently considered a slight favorite according to recent lines.

For the UFC there is plenty riding on the November 12 foray into network TV. White said as early as this weekend, his crew will be utilizing extra rehearsals to shore up event production. The show will include elements like backstage interviews with the main-event fighters before the title bout, and other wrinkles. Those changes and the importance of the show caused White to admit that it's the first time in a long time he's had some nerves about a show he's produced. But as far as the in-ring action, he has no doubts. He knows Velasquez and dos Santos will deliver.

"We're working hard and we're going to nail this thing," White said. "I know the fight is going to be great. The fight is the least of my worries. That's why these two are in the spotlight and in this position."

While Dana White has expressed interest in seeing seasoned referee Herb Dean serving as the third man in the octagon for the highly anticipated heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos come November 12th, when the UFC makes its FOX network debut, the California State Athletic Commission has some other plans.

CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd informed MMAjunkie.com of the proposed refereeing assignment for the evening’s main event, and the name Herb Dean isn’t a name being tossed about. Rather, the commission has its eyes set on the most experienced ref in the business: “Big” John McCarthy.

While the decision isn’t yet set in stone, Dodd exclaimed that there is a “99 percent chance that John McCarthy will be in the cage for the main event."

It’s news that may not sit well with White, as he and McCarthy have had a slightly tumultuous relationship over the last few years, but it may ultimately be the best call.

UFC on FOX Roundtable: Big Questions Before the Big Fight

We're just a few days away from the first UFC on FOX (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConFOX/) event, and still so many questions remain. What will the show look like? Will Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/CainVelasquez/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JuniordosSantos/) manage to deliver in the UFC's hour of need? And what ever shall I wear?!

To answer at least a couple of these queries, I enlisted the help of my MMA Fighting colleague Mike Chiappetta (http://www.mmafighting.com/staff/mike-chiappetta/) for a good old-fashioned writers' roundtable. Let's do this.

1. What do you make of the decision to air just one fight on FOX? If you were calling the shots, how would you spend that extra time?

Fowlkes: I'm going to file this under 'Decisions I Understand, But Do Not Like.' It's a big file, one that begins with my parents' refusal to take me to a Guns N' Roses concert in 1991, and one that gets a little fatter every time the city denies my request to re-zone my garage as a tanning salon.

The UFC made a bold and perhaps brilliant move by throwing a heavyweight title fight on network TV. Everyone, regardless of their combat sports IQ, can appreciate the significance of the heavyweight title. Two big guys are going to try and knock each other out on a channel you could get with your grandmother's TV? Of course you want to see that.

When deciding how best to use the hour-long introduction on FOX, I can understand the need to both a) take some time and educate new viewers on what all this MMA nonsense is really about, while also b) preparing for the unlikely possibility that Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will go the full five.

That said, would it kill them to keep one of the evening's better fights in the can, just in case? If there's an amazing fight somewhere on the undercard, wouldn't you want the flexibility to throw it onto the broadcast, time permitting? I know you need to take a minute and explain to some viewers that, contrary to what they've heard, biting and eye-gouging are not allowed in this crazy Thunderdome-esque sport, but too much of that and you risk condescending to your audience. I realize I'm biased, but I'd rather see a hand-picked fight from the prelims than a primer on joint locks.

Chiappetta: Reality check ... Let's not forget that this fight isn't even part of the actual UFC-FOX contract. It is essentially a one-hour infomercial preview to advertise the coming of the UFC on FOX in 2012. And what do they give us? It's not Ron Popeil talking about a new product that is going to change your life. They're giving us a UFC heavyweight championship fight. For free. Yet people complain this isn't enough? So you're telling me you would rather have paid $54.95 to watch five fights just before the holiday season hits? I'm not buying it. This is a lot of belly-aching over something MMA observers should be thrilled about. I think MMA fans are conditioned to believe they're getting the short end of the stick no matter what. Having the spotlight on just one significant fight will make it easy to understand for those who are tuning into MMA for the first time, and this may hurt to hear, but this fight is more about them than you.

I like the fact that FOX will have brief pre-fight interviews with Velasquez and dos Santos, which will probably make the start time of the fight around 9:15 pm ET. If the fight ends in a flash, I would of course show replays and allow time for analysis of what just happened. And in the true spirit of the infomercial sell, I'd have Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem on site to hype their fight and promote the winner as the next contender for the championship. One hour will go by in a flash.

2. A lot seems to depend on whether this fight goes 25 minutes or 25 seconds. Call it: who wins, how, and when?

Chiappetta: If Cain Velasquez never suffered through his shoulder injury, this would be easier to predict, but a torn rotator cuff is a serious injury for any athlete, let alone someone whose livelihood depends on punching, pushing and pummeling for position. Because of that, a question mark hangs over this fight that otherwise wouldn't be there.

That said, I have to assume that Velasquez is close enough to 100 percent that he'll be able to do most of the things that have led to his unbeaten record and the title. He'll mix up his striking with punches, kicks and elbows, sprinkle in a few takedowns and even grind dos Santos against the cage in hopes of sapping his explosiveness and power. dos Santos' hands are so gifted that there's simply no reason to engage him where he's best, and Velasquez doesn't have to. It is Velasquez's motor that will ultimately win it, though. He can fight at a blistering pace longer than anyone at heavyweight. After the grind of a couple of rounds, that will get to dos Santos.

Velasquez wins by TKO from ground strikes late in the third round.

Fowlkes: The big question for me is, how conservative will Velasquez decide to play it? Are we looking at a replay of his fight with Cheick Kongo, which was a real nail-biter for every second it stayed standing and a total blowout every time it hit the mat? Or will the pressure to go all Forrest Griffin-Stefan Bonnar for the FOX debut get to the champ and make him do some things that might not be in his best interest?

I might be more worried about that with a different fighter, perhaps one known to let the spirit of the moment take him out of his game, but that's not Velasquez. The poise he showed in his bout with Brock Lesnar will serve him well here, and having a smart camp full of veteran coaches won't hurt either. I think he trades punches just long enough to open dos Santos up for the takedown, then he wears him out on the mat. I agree that it will be more of a grind than an explosion, and I also agree that dos Santos will succumb to the pace and the pressure more than the sheer power.

But because I agree with you, I must attempt to upstage you by getting even more specific with my prediction. Thus: Velasquez wins by TKO (corner stoppage), at the end of the fourth round, following 20 solid minutes of straight-up beatdown that JDS' trainers simply cannot stand to watch any longer. As Velasquez celebrates across the cage, JDS remains on his stool, blinded by swelling, insisting that he can continue even as his coach fans him with a towel and tells him that he doesn't have anything left to prove. "Not to me," he'll add, choking back tears. "Not to anyone."

Thank you and goodnight!

3. The undercard fighters are, in a way, a part of history here, but is this a raw deal for guys like Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/ClayGuida/) and Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/BenHenderson/)?

Fowlkes: Short answer: yes. How could it not be a raw deal? Usually, even if you're the curtain-jerker for a UFC pay-per-view, there is at least a chance that you could end up on TV. If you have a great fight or a quick finish you might just make the broadcast and please your sponsors, not to mention your family and friends. Granted, it's far from guaranteed, but at least you have that lottery ticket in your back pocket.

With this event, however, there's not even a chance. Even Guida and Henderson will have to be content with a Facebook stream and an appearance on Fox Deportes. No offense to The D (that's a hip new nickname I'm trying to start for Fox Deportes -- just play along), but I'm not sure Guida grew up dreaming of the day he'd be fighting on a Spanish-language cable TV broadcast. Years from now these other guys on the FOX card might be the answers to a trivia question, but Cain and JDS are what people will remember. Kind of a bummer, when you consider what's at stake in some of these fights that will be afterthoughts for the vast majority of viewers.

Chiappetta: I don't know Fowlkes, have you ever seen a Spanish telenovela? If the hero gets the girl, I don't think Guida would be so opposed.

But yes, it is a raw deal for Guida and Henderson, who will be competing in the biggest fight of their lives before an internet audience of ... thousands? That said, I would expect a raucous crowd at the venue in Anaheim, and there is a huge potential reward in it for both men, so it's not exactly going to be meaningless. In some ways, this might be a bigger letdown for Guida, who has fought for the UFC for five years and probably saw this bout as his coming-out party. Henderson is at a much earlier stage in his career, and after recently coming over from the WEC, he might not take the bright lights and big audiences for granted.

An internet stream is not the optimal outlet for a fight of this importance, but at least the winner can soothe himself with the probable top contender status that is likely to come his way.

UFC Not the First on Network TV, but Can It Learn From Others' Mistakes?

Make no mistake: the UFC on Fox (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConFox/) is a landmark event, and it is a very, very big deal for the UFC and its fans. But it's not quite an industry pioneer. Not by a long shot.

A live MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) event on network TV? Sorry UFC, but it's been done. Not particularly well, but still.

Before there was the UFC on FOX, there was EliteXC: Primetime. Before Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) agreed to meet for the UFC heavyweight title on network TV, Kimbo Slice (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/KimboSlice/) and James Thompson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/james/thompson/850/) introduced America to their own interpretation of MMA on CBS. Like many trailblazing efforts in other fields, this was an imperfect foray into the unknown. Let's just say mistakes were made, lessons were learned, and both EliteXC and CBS found out that sometimes it hurts to go first.

This was late May, 2008. Compared to today's MMA landscape, the field of battle was positively littered with would-be competitors to the UFC. The IFL had a pre-taped weekly spot on MyNetworkTV -- at the time one of the consistently lowest-rated English-language networks -- airing weeks-old fights and highlight reels. Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) had a similarly pre-taped, extremely late-night (or, more accurately, early morning) show on NBC at 2 a.m., following "Poker After Dark." Even clothier-turned-promoter Affliction was getting ready to jump into the MMA scene with a bloated payroll and a recklessly ambitious business plan.

And then there was EliteXC. First announced in 2006, the upstart organization put on its first fight in 2007 at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss. It wasn't the most auspicious of beginnings, particularly for an event entitled "Destiny" -- the main event ended in a disqualification loss for Frank Shamrock (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/shamrock/170/) after he illegally kneed Renzo Gracie (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/renzo/gracie/725/) in the head several times -- but with a main card on Showtime and an undercard streaming on Pro Elite website, it was perhaps a sign of things to come for the MMA industry as a whole.

On May 31, 2008, EliteXC brought a live MMA event to primetime network television for the first time in American TV history. The aptly named "Primetime" event went down in Newark's Prudential Center, and was loaded with EliteXC's most marketable stars, including Kimbo Slice, Gina Carano (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gina/carano/1193/), Robbie Lawler (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/robbie/lawler/471/), and Phil Baroni (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/baroni/267/).

From the very beginning, the big network debut wasn't exactly a Swiss watch. Carano missed weight badly for her fight with Kaitlin Young (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kaitlin/young/1196/), and didn't seem especially thrilled about being on the card at all. The event was headlined by former internet brawler Kimbo Slice (who had just two pro MMA fights at the time) taking on journeyman heavyweight James Thompson (who was riding a two-fight losing streak and had been knocked out in five of his last eight bouts).

The main event pairing was panned by many fans and pundits, particularly since the undercard featured a legitimately attemtion-worthy middleweight title bout between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/scott/smith/376/), but the rationale behind it seemed obvious enough. Here was Slice, an internet novelty act who had sprang into a sudden, bizarre form of fame capable only in the age of the internet, taking on a Brit with a glass jaw who at least looked the part to people who didn't know better. Slice would knock him out in front of millions of new viewers, all of whom would be instantly hooked on this new-fangled MMA stuff, and CBS and EliteXC would both scoop up their enormous piles of money and go home.

As you probably already know, it didn't go down like that.

The good news was, the millions of viewers showed up. The bad news was what they saw when they got there. Dancing girls, some not quite primetime-worthy performances, and, strangely, not all that much action. As Yahoo! columnist Kevin Iole pointed out later, "after the show had been on the air for 32 minutes, there had been 61 seconds of actual fighting. When it was 70 minutes into the show, there had been just 2:12 of fighting."

CBS would have reason to regret that, since the Slice-Thompson main event didn't even get underway until well after the show was scheduled to end. By the time the sloppy heavyweight affair finally ended -- and with a highly questionable stoppage that gave Slice the victory, no less -- EliteXC had run over by nearly an hour in its network debut. It also hadn't made too many friends.

Newspaper columnists and radio hosts around the country heaped various amounts of scorn on CBS for airing the spectacle. Even then-governor of New York David Paterson admitted to listening to the broadcast over the radio, though he was apparently unimpressed with descriptions of Thompson's cauliflower ear popping as a result of a Slice punch. Perhaps least surprisingly, UFC president Dana White slammed the effort as "disgusting."

Said White: "You can hate me, you can say whatever you want about me. I've been busting my ass for the last ten years in this sport, and there's a lot of great athletes in this sport...and last night was a [expletive] joke. Did it set us back? I don't know. I did Sportscenter today, where some guy's saying this stuff shouldn't even be on television. I agree. What happened last night should not be on [expletive] television, especially network television. But you can't say that about the real fighters in this sport."

Of course, that wasn't the death knell for MMA on network TV or even for EliteXC on CBS. On went the show(s), and America hadn't yet seen the last of Kimbo Slice. It's worth noting that then, just as now, the MMA community had high hopes for what network exposure might help the sport accomplish. The Baltimore Sun's Mark Chalifoux said it would be a "moment of truth" for EliteXC and MMA, writing that the "entire MMA-world has a lot riding on this event as it will be the first exposure to MMA for a lot of casual sports fans."

Sound familiar?

EliteXC promoter Gary Shaw promised it would be "the biggest thing ever to happen to MMA." After "Primetime" on CBS, Shaw said, fighters would be as big as American Idol contestants. "They'll be recognized at airports and Burger Kings," he added.

Somehow, I doubt that if James Thompson walked into a Burger King right now his biggest problem would be fending off autograph-seekers.

So what's different for the UFC's debut on FOX? In short, everything. Better fighters, probably better production values, and much better pre-fight promotion. While CBS seemed tepid in its support of MMA both with EliteXC and later with Strikeforce, FOX has already thrown its weight behind the UFC, plugging the Velasquez-dos Santos fight on NFL games and World Series broadcasts. If you were eating wings and watching the Packers beat the Chargers on Sunday, there's simply no way you didn't catch at least a half-dozen promos for the UFC on FOX.

This event also has simplicity on its side. With just one fight to get done inside of one hour, running long won't be an issue, nor will an overburdened slate that asks new viewers to try and differentiate between multiple fighters and weight classes.

If EliteXC's network debut was a three-hour variety act designed to introduce new fans to the sport, the UFC's first FOX outing is more like a band showing up to play its hit single and then getting back on the tour bus. Whether it will leave fans wanting more or simply leave them confused and/or disinterested remains to be seen, and a lot depends on whether Velasquez and dos Santos can live up to the hype and the pressure.

At least the UFC chose its fighters based on skill rather than fame. At least it has a partner that really believes in it enough to want to put its name on the product all the time, rather than only when it's convenient. At least it has the experience to pull something like this off, and the promotional savvy to do it right. The UFC might not be the first to make the leap to network TV, but it could still be the best.

Junior dos Santos: I Will Be the Heavyweight Champion on Saturday

It's difficult to tell whether Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) truly appreciates the magnitude of what's about to happen to him on Saturday night. Though the Brazilian heavyweight has swiftly picked up the English language like something out of a Rosetta Stone ad, his grasp of American culture might still be a tad hazy.

After all, if someone told you that you were about to appear on Brazil's Globo network, would you have any idea what that meant? So it is with dos Santos, who has heard enough by now to know that his UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) heavyweight title fight against Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) on FOX is a very big deal, but still seems unclear about the exact ramifications of it all.

"I have no idea what that means for sure yet," dos Santos told MMA Fighting on Tuesday afternoon. "I know it's going to be huge for our sport, for all of MMA, and for the UFC. I'm just happy to be here and I want to do my best to win this fight."

What it means, of course, is that dos Santos is about to become a significant part of MMA history. The sport has had primetime network TV exposure in the past, but nothing like this. As if fighting for a UFC title wasn't enough, dos Santos is about to help the UFC expose its product to millions of viewers, many of whom will likely have never watched an entire MMA bout before. Talk about pressure.

Because dos Santos' meeting with the champ is the only fight scheduled for Saturday night's hour-long broadcast, the stakes couldn't be higher for this fight. If it's a dud, the whole sport may be judged by it. If it's a thriller, dos Santos and Velasquez will likely be heroes not just to their bosses at the UFC, but to the multitudes of other pro MMA fighters -- present and future -- who are hoping that a successful debut on FOX will be the rising tide that lifts all ships.

Just thinking about it might be enough to give a normal person a panic attack, but the nerve-wracking immensity of it all doesn't seem capable of reaching dos Santos.

"I know it's an important show, it's an important fight, for me and the whole of MMA, but I'm feeling no pressure," he said. "Actually, I'm feeling the same pressure that I had for other fights. ... For me, it's going to be the same thing. I'm really happy with where I am now, fighting for the title, and it's more important than everything. I will keep my focus on the fight, on Cain Velasquez, and I'll try not to think about that other stuff."

It's a smart approach, since Velasquez's non-stop motor will probably provide dos Santos with plenty to think about once the cage door closes. The champion is far from the biggest or strongest man in the heavyweight division, but what he lacks in size he has more than made up for with speed and pace.

Once the former All-American wrestler gets started, he doesn't stop. He hardly even slows down, and there aren't many big men in the sport who can keep up with him. To make sure that he's one of the few who can go step-for-step and blow-for-blow with the champ, dos Santos had his conditioning coach adjust his training, he said.

To prepare for a fast-paced title fight that could, at least theoretically, go five rounds, dos Santos never sparred less than six rounds in training, he said. And while UFC president Dana White once criticized him for beating up on opponents early and then coasting in the later rounds, the Brazilian now says he's "more prepared for this fight, and I train a lot to keep fighting like in the first round for the whole [fight]."

"Cain Velasquez has really good stamina. For the heavyweight division, it's very different and that makes him very dangerous for this division. But you know, he seems like an unstoppable guy, and that's going to be my challenge. I'm going to do my best to stop him."

And how does he plan to do that, exactly? Fortunately for dos Santos (or maybe unfortunately, depending on how you think about it), he's not one of those fighters who needs to keep his game plan much of a secret. He wants to stay off the mat against the decorated wrestler and put his boxing skills to work, and he doesn't much care who knows it.

"I don't know how the fight will be, but I would love to fight standing with him," dos Santos said. "I think he's going to try and take me down and make his ground-and-pound. He's very good at ground-and-pound and I think he will try to do that. But I'm going to try very hard to keep this fight standing, because I want to knock him out and I will try my best to knock him out on Saturday."

It's a feat that none of Velasquez's other opponents have accomplished, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. Whether it ends via KO or not, dos Santos insisted, "I will win the title. I'm really confident [that] I will be the heavyweight champion on Saturday."

He's known nothing but success so far in the UFC, but a win would vault him to heights that even dos Santos seems incapable of imagining just yet.

As he put it, "When I started, I had dreams to fight in the UFC and be one of the best fighters in the world one day. But I never thought I could be here at this point right now. I'm just enjoying everything. I'm really prepared for this fight, and for sure it's going to be huge."

How huge? That's a question still waiting for an answer.

Dana White Talks UFC on FOX, His Hectic Schedule and Joe Frazier

LOS ANGELES - MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting caught up with UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White after the UFC on FOX pre-fight press conference Wednesday. He discussed his nerves leading up to the fight, what his life is like just days before the UFC on FOX debut, how this show will be different than past UFC events and his favorite Joe Frazier moment.

Clay Guida Grapples With Role as UFC on FOX's Forgotten Fighter

LOS ANGELES -- When Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/) arrived at Wednesday afternoon's UFC on FOX (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConFOX/) press conference, there was an empty chair and a card with his name on it waiting for him on the dais. By the time the press conference got underway, there was neither.

"They had spaces and then they realized, oh wait, they're not showing our fight [on FOX] so why would we be up there?" said Guida. "I understand, but old duder could have been hanging out at the hotel, sitting by the pool or something."

If you're waiting to hear Guida complain about his lot in life, that's about as close as you'll get. Clad in shorts and a hoodie and looking more like he was ready for a day at the beach on this warm fall afternoon, Guida's laid-back attitude fit right in with his southern California surroundings. If there's any fighter in the UFC who could look so relaxed about not only being left off the historic FOX debut, but also about being pulled out of his hotel to stand around in the L.A. sun for no reason, clearly it was the duder.

When you really stop and think about it though, it's hard to fathom how even Guida could not be seething with a certain quiet rage on this particular afternoon. Here he was, a few days away from a top contender bout with Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/) -- the kind of fight that can make or break a nearly 30-year-old fighter's career -- and he was being treated like the kid who'd showed up to the dance without a date.

In a way, being on the first UFC on FOX card makes him a part of history, but being relegated to the internet stream and the Spanish-language broadcast also makes him more of background player to that history than a living participant.

But instead of brooding in a corner while Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) soaked up the media attention, Guida sat in the front rows, snapping his own photos like one of the fans. He wasn't interesting in griping about what he'd missed out on, he explained afterward, but rather focusing on where he still had to go.

"I'm not necessarily disappointed, more determined now," said Guida. "Life has kind of come full circle and my MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career has come full circle. Five years ago I was on the undercard of UFC 64, just trying to win my fight and get put on the broadcast. This one, hopefully there's a chance, but they're going to put it on FoxSports.com, Facebook, you know."

In other words, people will see his fight, even if it's just the hardcores. And Guida is confident that the bout will eventually find its way onto the airwaves, since "Dana [White] is a magician. ...He will do his best to get it on TV."

Of course, by the time the bout does air for English-speaking American viewers, there's always the chance that Guida won't like what they see. Some oddsmakers have Henderson as a nearly 3-1 favorite, and if Guida loses this chance to position himself as a lightweight title challenger, he may never get another one.

After all, his current four-fight win streak has been almost two years in the making, and he hasn't faltered since his submission loss to Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/) at UFC 107 -- an experience that stays with him to this day, he said.

"I still use the Kenny Florian fight as motivation," Guida said. "I thank him every day in my training for teaching me a lesson, unfortunately. I was trying to strike with a striker, but now I've learned to go back to my roots and that's hard work and wrestling."

It's hard to argue that Guida has made the most of those two attributes in recent fights, but will it be enough against Henderson? Not surprisingly, Guida doesn't seem to be stressing himself out over it at the moment.

"Patience is part of being a professional athlete," he said. "Five years seems like a long time, but to me it seems like I was just stepping in the cage on Oct. 14, 2006. To me it's about the journey, not just the destination."

Dana White Promises 'Biggest Fight in UFC History' for FOX Debut

Los Angeles -- Despite the magnitude of the UFC on FOX (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConFOX/) event this Saturday night in Anaheim, UFC president Dana White kept it simple and direct at Wednesday afternoon's press conference to promote the show. No supporting cast. No big procession to mark the big occasion. Just the two people who mattered, and the one man willing to shout from the rooftops about how important it all is.

Right across the street from the Staples Center in downtown L.A., walled in by the trendy bars and restaurants of the L.A. Live complex, White stood flanked by a couple of men whose dented faces and misshapen ears were enough to tell you that they hadn't come down here for a screen test, and squinted into the sun as he declared that what we were looking at was the ingredients for "without a doubt, the biggest fight in UFC history."

At least, that's what he's hoping for. It's what he's betting on, and why, White said, he chose heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/CainVelasquez/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JuniordosSantos/) to lead the charge in the UFC's network TV debut.

"If you're in this position where it is the biggest fight in UFC history, the biggest moment for the sport of mixed martial arts, these are the two guys you want to step in there and go out and fight," said White.

Of course, while Velasquez and dos Santos might make for a great pairing in the cage, they don't seem to be the UFC's best and brightest when it comes to selling a fight. Maybe it's that both are just too easy-going, too agreeable. Neither is known as a man of many words, and both are too respectful to reach into the pro wrestling bag of tricks for snappy one-liners and stinging insults.

Even when dos Santos was reminded during the presser that he once suggested that the champion in any given weight class isn't necessarily the best fighter in that division, he owned up to the remark before quickly adding that "in this case," Velasquez is the current top dog at heavyweight, "but I'm going to change this on Saturday."

For his part, Velasquez was bolstered by the support of the Hispanic fans who had come out for the event, drawing cheers when he thanked "La Raza" for their support, but mostly relying on White to play up that angle for him in typical fight promoter fashion.

After running down the bullet points of Velasquez rise to stardom, White called his heavyweight champ "a testament to the American dream...where somebody can go out there and work hard and focus and he really is that story. I don't care if you're Mexican, American, German, or Puerto Rican, man, I don't know how you can't love Cain Velasquez and his story."

Velasquez, not surprisingly, kept it slightly more low-key.

"I represent hardworking people," he said. "That's what my family is and that's what I've grown up around. Mexicans are hardworking people. That's what it means to me."

Not that dos Santos was without his supporters, however. Even after it was suggested to him that he might find himself in unfriendly territory inside the Honda Center, small, but passionate chants of "Cigano! Cigano!" broke out among a few fans.

"I think for sure there's going to be a lot of people rooting for Cain on Saturday night, but I know I'm going to get a lot of people rooting for me too, in the whole world," said dos Santos. "That's the energy I will bring with me inside the cage and use in the fight."

A question from one enthusiastic fan about which hand dos Santos planned to knock the champ out with drew boos from the mostly pro-Velasquez crowd, but merely seemed to confuse dos Santos at first, before he replied, "I have two hands for a reason...but I like this one," as he held up his right.

Another fan told Velasquez that his achievements made him proud to be Mexican, which seemed genuinely touching before he quickly followed it up with a slightly unreasonable request to walk to the cage with the champ's entourage on Saturday night.

"I don't think we can do that," said a visibly uncomfortable Velasquez.

But White, who'd already agreed to give another fan tickets to the promotion's upcoming Toronto event immediately after telling fans not to ask him for tickets, dismissed such practical concerns easily.

"Yeah, we'll do it, dude," he said.

Maybe it was the sunshine getting to the UFC president. Maybe he's just feeling so good about the upcoming network debut, he's become a soft touch for increasingly demanding fans. Or maybe sometimes all you have to do is ask and the rest takes care of itself.

As for White, he's already made clear what he's hoping for out of Velasquez and dos Santos when FOX pulls back the curtain on Saturday night. Whether he too will get what he wants remains to be seen.

As Hype Increases for UFC on FOX Fight, So Do Risks for Cain Velasquez

LOS ANGELES -- UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White has made no secret of what he's hoping to see when Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) and Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) climb in the cage for the first UFC on FOX fight this Saturday night.

"You see what these two fight like and you can pretty guarantee the way this fight is going to go," White said at Wednesday's press conference. "I can tell you what's not going to happen. It's not going to be boring, there's not going to be any stalemating, and this fight's going to be an absolute war."

In other words, a cross between Griffin-Bonnar I and Hagler-Hearns might be acceptable. Anything less and it will feel like a disappointment.

But projecting such enormous expectations onto the fight could have unforeseen consequences, especially if the fighters feel an obligation to deliver a certain kind of fight in order to please their boss and make a good impression on the network TV audience.

Some segment of the viewing public might like to see the fight become a wild brawl, but that seems like an outcome that would benefit the precision striker dos Santos much more than the former All-American wrestler Velasquez. It's not hard to imagine the champ leaving his game plan in the locker room in an attempt to deliver what White has promised, and if he does he could be looking at a fight that doesn't necessarily play to his strengths.

If Velasquez's camp is worried about the effect of the pressure of their fighter, however, they won't admit it. But that doesn't mean they recognize the danger.

"If they go out there and go crazy, it probably will be to [dos Santos'] advantage, because I think Cain has more skills than he does," said AKA teammate and sparring partner Daniel Cormier (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/daniel/cormier/1409/). "...But Cain could fight the strategy that's been laid out for him on cruise control. That's the best thing about being at AKA, is we emphasize strategy and how we're going to fight and our game plan and we follow it every day of the week in training. It's not like you're going to spar however you want. You spar according to the game plan that [head trainer Javier Mendez] sets out in front of us. You don't abandon it."

Undoubtedly Velasquez will benefit from having the experience of his trainers and teammates behind him, but at the same time, has any of them ever been in a fight of this magnitude? Are they fully prepared for what it might do to their fighter's mind to have White promising a war whether Velasquez's game plan calls for it or not?

According to Mendez, the team isn't relying on Velasquez's ability to block out the hype so much as his ability to deliver on it without changing anything about his fighting style.

"Cain's going to come in and if Junior can be mauled right away, I'm sure Cain will maul him right away," said Mendez. "But Cain's never put on a boring fight because he's constant action, he doesn't stall, doesn't hold. He's a chain-type fighter. He's always looking to do the most damage and get you out of there as fast as possible, so I can guarantee you this fight will be the most exciting fight in the heavyweight division. There's no way this fight will be boring. I'd bet my life on it."

Still, it's an awful lot to ask for from any fighter, particularly one who's been out of action for a little over a year. Velasquez suffered a torn rotator cuff in victory over Brock Lesnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brock/lesnar/305/) to claim the title last October, and had surgery to repair the injured shoulder in January.

The road back wasn't an easy one for the champ, who slipped out of fighting shape when he couldn't train like he'd become accustomed to.

"He got big," chuckled Cormier. "I don't know how heavy he got, but he got big. I used to give him a hard time, calling him Mark Hunt (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/hunt/735/). He didn't like that very much."

According to Mendez, it took about a month of gradually getting Velasquez back into good condition before they could begin the real work.

"In the beginning it was hard," Mendez said. "I was having him just do footwork stuff and he was so out of shape, he got tired just doing footwork. He had a callous on the bottom of his foot and he ripped it so I had to have him stop. It went from that to where he is now, which is pretty amazing."

But even as Velasquez and dos Santos both swear that they've barely noticed the added pressure for this fight, those around them certainly have.

"It's bigger," said Cormier. "It means a lot more. But I think those guys are trained to ignore it, and that's good. When you're in the fight, whether it's on FOX or on Spike or in a damn garage somewhere, you have to focus on the fight. That's really all that matters. But for everyone else around, we know it's bigger. You can feel that it means so much for the sport. If they go out and lay an egg, it's not going to be good."

Even Mendez, who initially insisted that it felt like any other fight, had to stop himself and admit, "well, you know, actually I'm probably lying about that."

There's no use in denying it: this is a different kind of fight. If Velasquez and dos Santos didn't know it already, they found out when they showed up to the presser and White started making promises and guarantees on their behalf.

"Give me my entire roster of guys, make every one of them healthy, and this is still the fight I'd pick," said White. "This is the fight that I picked to put on network television, and it is important, and I picked this fight for a reason."

With the bar set that high, it would be easy to get a reckless while trying to reach it.

ROSEMEAD, Calif. -- MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting caught up with Benson Henderson on Thursday to discuss his upcoming fight against Clay Guida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/clay/guida/459/), not fighting on FOX, whether he feels disrespected that he's not on FOX, Guida's run in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) and whether the winner of this will fight for the lightweight title.

UFC on FOX Weigh-In Results

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The fighters took to the scale inside the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on Friday to make it official before Saturday night's debut event on the FOX network. All fighters made weight in front of the enthusiastic afternoon crowd of just over 2,000 people, but the weigh-in was mostly a ceremonial matter for the two main event fighters, both of whom clocked in well below the heavyweight limit.

While UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/CainVelasquez/) drew cheers by thanking "La Raza" for their support, Brazilian challenger Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JuniordosSantos/) kept his remarks short and direct.

"Just one thing," said dos Santos. "Get ready for a war!"

As the monumental UFC on FOX broadcast nears, public sentiment seems to favor heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez to retain his belt. That's a shift from a few months ago, when challenger Junior dos Santos opened as a slight favorite against him.

On Friday afternoon, top heavyweight contenders Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem both rode the wave, predicting that Velasquez would emerge victorious. And No. 1 middleweight contender Chael Sonnen one-upped everyone, pronouncing Velasquez as not just the best heavyweight in MMA history, but in all of combat sports history.

"Cain Velasquez for my money is the most intimidating force ever in heavyweight combat," Sonnen said on Friday's edition of MMA Live. "That includes guys like [Mike] Tyson, [Evander] Holyfield, [George] Foreman, whoever you want to name. Velasquez is the most feared of them all."

That's an awfully bold statement, and it can certainly be argued that Velasquez is not nearly well known enough to be considered the most feared heavyweight history has seen. He's fought just nine times, though he is a perfect 9-0 with seven knockouts.

A designation like the one Sonnen bestowed upon Velasquez is usually earned over time, and with only four years in the fight game, the 6-foot-1, 240-pounder doesn't have the lengthy track record that other combat sports stars of the past can boast.

Saturday night's fight is expected to draw one of the largest television audiences in U.S. MMA history, and Velasquez can take a big step in writing that type of legacy with a win over dos Santos in a bout that many believe to be the best UFC heavyweight title matchup ever.

Sonnen, at least, thinks that will happen, expecting Velasquez to wear down his challenger with his stamina.

"Junior's got to win this fight, he's got to win early," he said. "If he doesn't win it in the first round, and realistically if he doesn't win it in the first minutes of the first round, it's going to go from bad to worse."
