Verbal agreements are in place for a UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) encounter between Rory MacDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rory/macdonald/1176/) and Brian Ebersole (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/ebersole/1209/) on the Dec. 10 Toronto card, UFC president Dana White recently revealed (http://www.ufc.com/news/ufc-140-fight-card-updates).

Having fought on the UFC's first card in Ontario at UFC 129 this past April, British Columbia's MacDonald (12-1) will compete in his home country while shooting for his third consecutive win. The 22-year-old standout bounced back from a tough loss to Carlos Condit (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/carlos/condit/663/) last year by putting in dominant efforts this year against Nick Diaz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nick/diaz/506/) and Mike Pyle (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/pyle/870/).

It took nearly 11 years for Ebersole (48-14-1) to finally receive the chance to step inside the UFC cage, but he's made the most of every moment with wins over Chris Lytle (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chris/lytle/217/) and Dennis Hallman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dennis/hallman/250/) at UFC 127 and UFC 133 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+133/), respectively. He's also taken the spotlight in these fights for his up-arrow chest hair and most recently, a $70,000 bonus for as White put it, "getting [Hallman's] horrifying shots off TV" award (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/08/07/dennis-hallmans-shorts-upset-dana-white/).

With UFC 140 still three months away and plenty of cards in between, the only bouts leaked so far for the card are Rich Attonito vs. Claude Patrick and John Cholish vs. Mitch Clarke. No main event has been announced.

UFC 140, happening a week after the TUF 14 Finale and three weeks before the Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/09/06/brock-lesnar-vs-alistair-overeem-set-for-year-end-ufc-show/) showdown, will take place at the Air Canada Centre.

UFC 140: Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Three years after they first stepped into the Octagon together, Frank Mir (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/mir/377/) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rodrigo/nogueira/272/) are set to meet again.

Mir vs. Nogueira 2 has been confirmed for UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) on Dec. 10 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, with Mir finally getting his next opponent and Nogueira making a quick turnaround after his impressive victory over Brendan Schaub (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brendan/schaub/1161/) in August.

In their first meeting, at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 92, Mir pulled off what was then an upset and became the first person ever to finish Nogueira, winning a second-round technical knockout. That fight came at the conclusion of their season coaching against each other on The Ultimate Fighter, gave Mir the UFC's interim heavyweight title, and set up Mir for his bout with Brock Lesnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brock/lesnar/305/) at UFC 100.

Mir has gone 3-2 since the first Nogueira fight, losing to Lesnar and Shane Carwin (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shane/carwin/232/) and beating Cheick Kongo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cheick/kongo/238/), Mirko Cro Cop and Roy Nelson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/roy/nelson/1015/). Nogueira has gone 2-1 since losing to Mir, beating Randy Couture (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/randy/couture/27/) and losing to Cain Velasquez before beating Schaub.

The UFC's heavyweight division is looking revitalized right now, with Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos and Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem set for November and December. The Mir-Nogueira rematch isn't quite as big a fight as those two, but it's another sign that we're going to see some big heavyweight action in the months ahead.

UFC 140 – Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira!

Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been announced for the UFC 140 card set to go down December 10th in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The UFC has announced that a light-heavyweight fight between Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been added to UFC 140. This marks the second time that the two have agreed to fight each other. Originally, the two were supposed to meet in the main event of March’s UFC Fight Night. However, Tito Ortiz withdrew from the fight due to a concussion, and was replaced by Phil Davis.

Both fighters are in serious need of a victory if they want to stay relevant in the UFC. While Ortiz managed to pull off an upset victory over Ryan Bader at UFC 132, he went on to get thoroughly dominated by Rashad Evans (save for a guillotine attempt in the second round) at UFC 133. Tito Ortiz is now 1-5-1 in his last seven fights. Likewise, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is riding a two fight losing streak of his own. After losing to Ryan Bader at UFC 119, Nogueira was outclassed by Phil Davis during March’s UFC Fight Night. If we’re not counting his controversial victory over Jason Brilz at UFC 114, Nogueira hasn’t won since punching out Luiz Cane at UFC 106 in November 2009.

Mark Bocek vs. Nik Lentz Added to UFC 140

The recently announced UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) continues to take shape, with the addition of a lightweight bout added on Tuesday.

Just confirmed by the promotion, Nik Lentz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nik/lentz/1137/) takes on Mark Bocek (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/bocek/452/) in a match featuring grappling specialists.

Lentz (21-3-2, 1 no contest) will return to the octagon for the first time since being hit with an illegal knee by Charles Oliveira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/charles/oliveira/1531/) in a match that was ultimately ruled a no contest.

Lentz has yet to lose in seven UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) bouts, though he's had two matches end with unsatisfying conclusions: the previously mentioned no contest, as well as a January 2010 draw against Thiago Tavares (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/thiago/tavares/533/).

Prior to the no contest bout against Oliveira in June, he'd won four straight, including a guillotine choke submission over Waylon Lowe (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/waylon/lowe/1530/), his first finish in the UFC.

Bocek (9-4) is an aggressive submission specialist who has earned seven of his career wins via tapout. He's gone 1-2 in his last three fights, sandwiching a triangle choke win over Dustin Hazelett (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dustin/hazelett/544/) between decision losses to top lightweights Jim Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jim/miller/509/) and Ben Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ben/henderson/1066/).

UFC 140 will take place on December 10 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. It will be the promotion's first time back in the city since selling out the 55,000 seat Rogers Centre for April's UFC 129.

Among the other bouts agreed to for the event are Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira II, Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Dennis Hallman vs. John Makdessi, and Rory MacDonald vs. Brian Ebersole.

Krzysztof Soszynski Meets Igor Pokrajac at UFC 140 in Toronto

A potential misspelling nightmare bout has been booked by the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) for December.

Krzysztof Soszynski (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/krzysztof/soszynski/309/) will face off with Igor Pokrajac (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/igor/pokrajac/966/) in a light heavyweight fight at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/), which is expected to take place in Toronto on Dec. 10. The two fighters were originally paired up for a fight at UFC 131 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+131/) in June, but an injury pushed Pokrajac off the card.

UFC 140 will be the promotion's second trip to Toronto in 2011. The first visit, in April, took place at the Rogers Centre and set a North American record with more than 55,000 fans. This card, though, will take place at the Air Canada Centre with an expected main event between heavyweights Frank Mir (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/mir/377/) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rodrigo/nogueira/272/).

Soszynski (26-11-1, 6-2 UFC) has won back-to-back decisions since suffering his first TKO in nearly three years with a loss to Stephan Bonnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/stephan/bonnar/297/) in July 2010. In June, Soszynski beat Mike Massenzio (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/massenzio/493/), who had filled in for Pokrajac. And in that fight, Pokrajac had filled in for Anthony Perosh (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/perosh/175/).

Soszynski, a Season 8 cast member of "The Ultimate Fighter," has won three fight night bonus awards in his eight UFC fights, including consecutive Submission of the Night wins against Shane Primm and Brian Stann in his first two fights for the promotion.

Pokrajac (23-8, 2-3 UFC) is coming off a March win over Todd Brown at UFC on Versus 3. He has won two of three fights, including a submission over James Irvin last year. His one loss in that stretch was a unanimous decision setback against Bonnar at the TUF 12 Finale in December.

UFC 140 also is expected to feature a light heavyweight bout between Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, which was originally scheduled for this past March before Ortiz pulled out with an injury. Other fights on the card include Brian Ebersole vs. Rory MacDonald and Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung.

UFC Targeting Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans for UFC 140 Main Event

HOUSTON -- Get ready for the grudge match.

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) is targeting December's UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) for the long-awaited Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) vs. Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) light-heavyweight title bout, MMA Fighting has learned from sources with knowledge of the situation.

The fight is not yet official, but appears likely to be announced within the next 24-48 hours. UFC president Dana White told MMA Fighting that he could not yet announce a UFC 140 main event, but might possibly be able to do so by the end of the day.

Before that can happen, at least one hurdle must be overcome. Evans has to be cleared from a hand injury suffered in his recent UFC 133 win over Tito Ortiz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tito/ortiz/234/). That injury required pins to be inserted into his hands, but Evans' coach Mike Van Arsdale told MMA Fighting that he was scheduled to visit the doctor on Wednesday and expected Evans to be cleared.

Van Arsdale told MMA Fighting he had no knowledge of the rumored December date, but said a clean bill of health would make Evans' participation in a Dec. 10 fight feasible.

"I think if they give us any date, I can get him ready to beat Jon," he said. "I'm not overly concerned about Jon like everyone else is. My fighter has the ability, tools and the determination to beat him. As long as he's healthy, and I have eight or nine weeks with him -- and it's right around that right now, that's all I need."

Jones, meanwhile, is coming off his fourth-round submission win over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 135 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+135/) just two weeks ago. A bout at UFC 140 would mark a quick turnaround for the 24-year-old.

If UFC officials could navigate these issues, Jones and Evans will finally bring their long-held grudge to the octagon. The two were infamously once teammates at the Greg Jackson camp in New Mexico before parting ways earlier in 2011.

UFC 140 will take place in Toronto's Air Canada Centre. It will be the promotion's first time back since its massive Rogers Centre spectacle set records by drawing over 55,000 fans and an $11 million gate.

(Topic titel aanpassen aub)

UFC 140: Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida

The main event for UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) is set, with Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) set to defend his light heavyweight title against former champion Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/).

UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) President Dana White announced on Twitter that Jones vs. Machida will be the main event for the card (http://twitter.com/#%21/danawhite/status/121979936629202944), which takes place on December 10 in Toronto.

The decision to give the next shot at the light heavyweight title to Machida comes as a surprise because Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) has long been declared the No. 1 contender. But Evans, who wore a cast on his hand when he faced off with Jones following Jons' victory over Rampage Jackson last month, will apparently not be ready to fight in time for Jones' next title defense.

For Jones, the matchup means he will fight four times in 2011: He beat Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/) in February, Ryan Bader in March and Jackson in September. Fighting this often is rare in the UFC, especially among championship-level fighters, but Jones is apparently ready, and the UFC apparently wants to keep their young star active.

He'll have an interesting stylistic matchup in Machida, whose striking is unlike anything Jones has ever faced before. Then again, Jones' strength, speed and reach is unlike anything Machida has ever faced before. This should be a great fight.

The decision to give the next shot at the light heavyweight title to Machida comes as a surprise because Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) has long been declared the No. 1 contender. But Evans, who wore a cast on his hand when he faced off with Jones following Jones' victory over Rampage Jackson last month, will apparently not be ready to fight in time for Jones' next title defense.

For Jones, the matchup means he will fight four times in 2011: He beat Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/) in February, Shogun Rua in March and Jackson in September.

Jon Jones Explains Why He Is Fighting Lyoto Machida at UFC 140

UFC president Dana White (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/DanaWhite/) dropped a bombshell on Thursday afternoon (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/10/06/ufc-140-jon-jones-vs-lyoto-machida/) when he announced that Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/), not Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/), would meet Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) for the UFC light heavyweight title in Toronto.

MMAFighting.com spoke to Jones after the news broke about why he is fighting Machida instead of Evans and his thoughts on the new opponent.

Ariel Helwani: How did this fight come about?
Jon Jones: The way the fight came about was Dana called me into his office just a few days ago, and he asked me to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 140. Without hesitation, I said 'absolutely'. There's nothing I want to do more than to get past this Rashad Evans chapter in my career, because it's been a nuisance. He's been the antagonist in my career. So, I'm predicting that maybe Rashad thought that I would turn the fight down, knowing that I just got done finishing my title fight. I'm sure he thought that I would say no to him, and I'm sure he would have went with the approach of, 'Oh well, Jon Jones is ducking me again; he turns down the fight in nine weeks.' To his surprise, I took the fight, and after I took the fight, he decides that his hand isn't ready, and he's going to need more time. So, with me already agreeing with Dana that I would take a fight at UFC 140, Dana called me back and said, 'Hey, listen, Rashad decided that he can't compete at UFC 140, what would think about fighting Lyoto Machida?' And I said 'absolutely'. My feet were swollen after my fight, but they are healed now, and I want to fight. My health is good, I'm a young guy, and I want to fight. So I took the fight against Lyoto in nine weeks from now. This is four fights in 10 months against three former champions in the same year. I don't think that's ever been done.

Did you tell the UFC that since Evans wasn't ready to fight in December that you would rather wait a month or two to fight him so you can finally put this beef behind you?
Well, Dana White basically needed someone to save 140. I didn't necessarily want to fight at 140, but because it was Rashad, I said, 'You know what? I would take the fight in nine weeks.' I'm already in shape. I already know what I want to do. Rashad, predicting that I would say no, he kind of kicked himself in the butt because I said yes, he turns around and says, 'Oh, I didn't expect Jon to say yes. I don't want to fight him that soon.' So in reality, he's kind of the one who's ducking the fight. I feel like he's ducking the fight.

So you think he was trying to force your hand so you would look bad in the fans' eyes, but you then forced his hand?
Exactly. 100 percent that's what I'm trying to get at. He's tried to call me out on nine weeks' notice. Obviously, who wants to fight on nine weeks' notice? I just got a new car, I want to drive that around. I want to hang out with my family and relax and sleep in my own bed for once. And now Rashad calls me out, predicting that I would say no, to make me look like I was ducking him again, and I say yes, and now he says, Oh, I didn't know he would say yes. I don't want to fight him. He called Dana White, asked for 140, Dana White called me and said Rashad wants this fight. I gave him the fight he wanted and then he pulled out.

Is a part of you disappointed that this rivalry will now drag on even longer?
Obviously all my energy is on Lyoto Machida now. Rashad is just a small part of my being right now. I don't really think about Rashad that much. But it annoys me. The reason why I took the fight on nine weeks' notice is because I wanted it to be over. Like I said, Rashad is the biggest antagonist of my career. He's the biggest hater. He has so much envy. I don't write him, he writes me. He harasses me pretty much. He is so envious and so jealous and it's so obvious, he doesn't even try to hide it. And after I beat him, he's going to hate me even more. So, pretty much the only reason I took the fight is because I thought I was fighting Rashad, and now that I'm fighting Lyoto. Obviously, I'll get up for Lyoto because Lyoto is a worthy and awesome opponent - way better than Rashad Evans, I think. So to anyone who thinks I would duck Rashad by not waiting, let them know that there's nothing more than I would want to do than fight Rashad Evans. Dana asked me to fight at UFC 140, so I am doing this for the UFC.

Do you think Rashad should have to fight someone else now before fighting you?
Yeah. Obviously, I want to fight him. But how long are you going to get to wait and sit around? You go from not fighting for a whole year, and then you get a fight like Tito Oritz, which everybody knows where Tito is at in his career, and now he just gets to sit around and be the No. 1 contender again? It looks like he's the one that's sitting on his glory and riding his glory. There's tons of guys out there. I think when he gets better, he should have to fight Phil Davis or Dan Henderson. How does he get the right to just sit around and say who he is going to fight and when he is going to fight and continue to be the No. 1 contender while everybody else fights all year long?

What do you think about fighting Machida?
I feel great about the fight. Lyoto, I respect him dearly. He's an awesome, awesome guy. I love the way that he carries himself outside of the Octagon. He has a little bit more of that warrior spirit, something that I believe I have, as well. I'm excited to fight somebody with honor. Somebody who respects this sport. You know, fighting a guy like 'Rampage,' all the talk and making our sport look bad. Fighting a guy like Rashad, all the talking, you know, it's not WWF, it's the UFC. Lyoto understands that. So I'm excited to not have to be forced to talk so much. Not be forced to degrade my opponent verbally, but to compete against him the way it's supposed to be.

I think Lyoto Machida is a tougher fight for me than Rashad Evans. I'm fighting the guy who knocked out Rashad Evans. Lyoto is a a completely different test for me. He's the first southpaw that I've ever fought. Rashad sat out a whole year and waited for Shogun. I'm not taking off a year. I think Rashad is the one that needs to be questioned. His credibility needs to be questioned. He said he had a knee injury, now it's a thumb injury. What's it going to be next? He's going to have a toe injury? I'm not the one who took off a whole year to wait for a fight. I'm fighting in between fights. I'm looking to fight as much as possible.

Jon Jones Knows His Long Road to Rashad Evans Goes Through Lyoto Machida

Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) makes it clear he still wants Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/), and we know Evans still wants him. But the road to each other has been filled with potholes and detours, and the waiting game continues, though neither is ever very far from the other's view.

With the specter of Evans hanging over the proceedings, the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on Wednesday officially announced UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) and its main event of champion Jones against challenger Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/).

The surprise main event was originally released by UFC president Dana White last week, after Evans' follow-up doctor visit determined he would need more time to rest his injured fight hand. Of course, the new pairing -- cemented by Jones, Machida and White at Toronto's Air Canada Centre -- promises a vastly different dynamic both in and out of the cage, with no past history between the men. For Jones, who had been expecting the long-awaited grudge bout, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

"I would prefer each fight to be a little more respectful. It is martial arts. But I'm OK with the other side of it, too. I understand there are two different fan bases. Some people like more of that warrior spirit, discipline and honor, and other people like more of the cage fighter, I'm-gonna-knock-you-out type stuff. So I'm getting more comfortable with both of them, and it is what it is."

That said, Jones (14-1) was clearly disappointed his chance at Evans was scuttled, even if he does have great respect for Machida, who is also a former UFC light heavyweight champion.

Jones said he fully realizes that just because Evans will not be standing in front of him on December 10, there won't be any less to lose if he should fall to defeat. As such, he doesn't expect motivation to be an issue, even with this fight coming so close on the heels of his successful September 24 title defense against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

"I realize what I could lose in the fight that's in front of me, so when it comes to the question of getting up for the fight, it's definitely not an issue," he said. "And as far as getting up for the Rashad Evans fight, after all the drama of last year or so, it's a fight I absolutely cannot lose. I'm actually taught to think that no fight is a big fight. Don't fight the legend, just fight his body and see what happens.

'With Rashad, I'm really trying to teach myself, 'This is not a big fight, Jon. It's not a big fight, Jon,'" he continued. "But it's a huge fight to me right now. I wouldn't want to lose either one of them. So as far as getting up for fights, I'm up."

If Jones is to look past Machida, it could end up as a grave mistake. Despite losing two of his last three, Machida (17-2) is still a complex fighter with knockout power and a strong all-around game. Jones acknowledged that he's "never competed against anyone like him," and said he would spend time studying and learning Machida's tendencies.

Machida, as usual a man of few words, admitted that the initial offer to fight Jones took him by surprise, and that he believes his experience will "speak louder in this fight." Machida did reveal one interesting nugget though, saying that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) has already called him about working with him in preparation for the fight.

"I guarantee on December 10, I will very well prepared, and I can overcome his athleticism with my technique," Machida said.

If Jones emerges successful in the fight, he will have won four fights in 10 months, and run through a gauntlet of three former champions in the process. He's also gone from relative obscurity to fame in that time, a transition that has been known to affect many.

For Jones though, everything feels just about right.

"When I joined the sport, I always envisioned wanting to be the best, and trying to be the champion. So I tried to carry myself and think in that type of life, as if it was already so, even before it happened. So now that I'm here, I have this feeling as if I'm right where I'm supposed to be, and right where I worked to be, so I feel comfortable with everything that's happened."

UFC 140 will mark a quick return to Toronto for the promotion, which put on its landmark UFC 129 show in April, drawing over 55,000 fans and a gate surpassing $11 million at the Rogers Centre. The Air Canada Centre is a more traditional sports arena that seats just shy of 20,000 fans in its maximum seating configurations. In his remarks during the press conference, UFC president White called Toronto "without a doubt, the strongest market on the planet." In Jones, the promotion will be showcasing one of the strongest fighters on the planet, even if he comes with an unexpected opponent.

Highlights van de press conference:

Dana White: I'd do a fight every week here if I could. We want to go to strong markets and obviously this is the strongest market on the planet.

Jon Jones: The trash talk didn't bother me, it made me better as an individual and a professional. Some like the warrior spirit and the honor and others like the cage fighter aspect.

Dana White: We'll how this goes. We felt this was the correct move based on the time we get here.
Jon Jones: I feel my biggest advantage is my youth and my versatility and the way I approach the sport.

Lyoto Machida: It's hard to say but maybe my experience will be speak louder.

Dana White: I like this fight stylistically. If Jon Jones can walk through Machida the way he walked through Rampage than he has arrived, he is the real deal. The sky's the limit for this kid. He's got the Rashad fight after that and Rashad claims he's getting his number . Machida is stylistically very tough and I think this is a fun fight.

Lyoto Machida: It really caught me by surprise but I'm the type of guy that believes everything happens for a reason and that my time will come.

Dana White: Everywhere we go I want to put on great matchups and every time we go to a new place people tell us, "you better deliver!" When don't we deliver? Obviously coming back to the biggest market on Earth, we wanted to bring a great card here.

Jon Jones: I realize what I can lose and what's in front of me now. When it comes to getting up for a fight, that's not an issue. When it comes to the Rashad Evans fight, that's a fight I cannot lose. Don't fight the legend, just fight his body and see what happens. I try to tell me that it's not a big fight but it's a huge fight.

Jon Jones: I just need to be myself. I'm very real the fact that he's never faced anybody like me just like I've never faced anyone like him. I just want to take it from there.

Lyoto Machida: I guarantee that on December 10th I will be very well prepared and I can overcome his athleticism with my technique.

Dana White: I've said it many times that this guy is the whole package. At such a young age, taking on the names and beating the guys that he has. He might not be a household name, but when he beat Matyushenko, I was blown away with how he's done it. He's dealing with a lot of stuff that puts a lot of pressure on people and at a very young age.

Dana White: It's unbelievable. Before the Rampage fight people were talking pound for pound but I don't want to put the pressure on this guy. Your'e not in your prime until you're 27, 28, 29 years old. It's really impressive. You have to respect what he's been able to do at such a young age and how he's done it.

Lyoto Machida: I felt very welcome by the crowd. I fought a legend in Randy Couture and I was very excited by the crowd.

Jon Jones: It's very obvious in the MMA world that Canadian fans are very rabid and welcoming.

Dana White: We'll do the Rogers Centre when we have the right fight.

Jon Jones: I feel as if I'm able to handle it and balance it very well. I'm trying to learn to carry myself and think. I feel that I'm right where I'm supposed to be and I feel comfortable with what's happened.

Jon Jones: There's not really negatives to come along with a dream coming true. The only negative that has happened is I need to be more careful with the words I say because of the way I'm scrutinized with everything that happens.

Dana White: I think Roger Huerta did it, fought four times in a year but he wasn't champion. Jon Jones was busted up and hurting, his feet were sore and this kid bounces right back and takes the fight. I couldn't tell you how impressed I am.

Jon Jones: I don't think I'll be trainign with George leading up to this fight. Him and Carlos are fighting and I wouldn't want to jeopardize that friendship leading up to this fight.

Lyoto Machida: Anderson's already called me and said he wants to come to my hometown and show me some things. I'm just waiting for this to happen.

Dana White: Seven Canadians will be on this card. Rory MacDonald, Mark Hominick, Claude Patrick and Mark Bocek, my old jiu-jitsu guy.

Dana White: Hominick's gotta start with his next fight.

Dana White: I don't like answering those questions before a fight. I was impressed with Tito's last fight. He was great against Bader and he put on an awesome showing against Rashad. We'll see what happens.

Dana White: Rory's awesome and even Georges St. Pierre says that he's the next Georges St. Pierre. That's a tough fight. Ebersole came out of nowhere and has looked amazing in some pretty cool wins. This kid could be the next superstar. I'm very excited about this guy, don't want to put pressure on him. Mir and Nogueira are excited for this fight. Mir says he wants to get out there and start fighting more. Nogueira and Tito are in a real rough spot. These guys need to come in and perform and win.

Dana White: You can't look past these guys. Jon Jones has two tough fights ahead of him and he'll fight Chael Sonnen. They've got tough fights ahead of them. Jon's 24 years old. He's got business to take care of in the light heavyweight division without worrying about Anderson Silva.

Jon Jones: I think Steven Seagal came back to say high and offer words of encouragement. I appreciate the gesture and I'm glad I made the decision that I did for sure.

Yves Jabouin vs. Walel Watson Slated for UFC 140

"The Tiger" will meet "The Gazelle" north of the border at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC140/).

Yves Jabouin (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/YvesJabouin/), nicknamed "The Tiger," will take on Walel Watson (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/WalelWatson/), nicknamed "The Gazelle," on the Dec. 10 card in Toronto, the organization announced (http://www.ufc.com/news/ufc-140-fight-card-updates?an) Friday afternoon.

Jabouin (16-7) is 2-3 in Zuffa. The Montreal-native won his UFC debut at UFC 134 when he defeated Ian Loveland via unanimous decision. Prior to making his UFC debut in April, he fought for WEC.

The 5-foot-11 Watson looked impressive in his Octagon debut earlier in the month at UFC Live on Versus 6 when he defeated Joseph Sandoval in just 77 seconds via TKO.

UFC 140, headlined by Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida vs. UFC light heavyweight title, will air live on pay-per-view from Toronto's Air Canada Centre.

UFC 140: Rory MacDonald Out, Brian Ebersole Will Now Face Claude Patrick

An injury to one of the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s bright young up-and-coming fighters has caused the UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) card to be shifted.

The UFC announced (http://www.ufc.com/news/ufc-140-fight-card-updates?ares) that 22-year-old Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rory/macdonald/1176/) has been injured and forced to with draw from UFC 140, which takes place on December 10 in Toronto. The 12-1 MacDonald had been slated to face Brian Ebersole (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/ebersole/1209/), and it's disappointing news that one of the best young Canadians in MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) won't be able to fight on the next major card in Canada.

Ebersole will stay on the main card and face Claude Patrick (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/claude/patrick/1508/), a welterweight from Toronto who's 14-1 in his MMA career, including 3-0 in the UFC.

Patrick had been slated to face Rich Attonito (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rich/attonito/1545/) on the UFC 140 preliminary card. Attonito is expected to stay on the card, and the UFC said a new opponent for Attonito will be named soon.

UFC 140 is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) and Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/). The other fights on the main card will be Frank Mir (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/mir/377/) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira an dMark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung.

Boxing coach compares Lyoto Machida to Muhammad Ali, Roy Jones Jr
*
Photo Eduardo Ferreira
*
Responsible for sharpening the Boxing of names like Junior dos Santos, Anderson Silva and Rodrigo Nogueira, among others, Luiz Carlos Dorea went to Belem, Para, to help on the final phase of Lyoto Machida’s preparation for the fight against Jon Jones on December 10th.
*
And he was pleased with what he saw during the trainings.
*
“I’m very glad he’s in such good shape… Machida family is doing a great job”, compliments Dorea, commenting on his impressions about the former champion, who now trains in a smaller octagon than the one UFC uses, since he wants to focus on his speed. “He’s doing amazing, he’s fast and strong. Doing what he did on the light heavyweight division it’s not usual… Lyoto has the weapons to defeat Jon Jones”.
*
Machida is known for his Karate skills, once his family started practicing the art the father, Yoshizo, taught them, but Dorea guarantees that the karate fighter’s qualities at Nobre Arte equals some of the best names of the rings and cages.
*
“I have great Boxing experience and it’s hard to see a heavy weight fighter who moves and does what he does… There’re few: Anderson, Dos Santos, Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), Roy Jones Jr”, points out the coach, who for years trained the former world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas, believing on a Brazilian triumph at UFC 140, in Canada. “I trust Lyoto, I believe we’ll bring the fourth title to Brazil”.

Frank Mir Doesn't Want to Hear Excuses from Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Three years ago, Frank Mir (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/frank/mir/377/) defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rodrigo/nogueira/272/) at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 92 in a one-sided beating that many of Nogueira's supporters blamed on a staph infection that had plagued Nogueira during his training camp.

After three years of hearing people suggest that he only beat Nogueira because of that staph infection, Mir has heard enough.

In comments to the media Thursday during a promotional call for his UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) rematch with Nogueira, Mir said he thinks fighters who blame a sluggish performance on illnesses or injuries are doing a disservice to their opponents, and that he's tired of all the talk that the staph infection had something to do with Mir's second-round technical knockout victory in December of 2008.

"There were a lot of words, circumstances surrounding the last victory how legitimate it could possibly be because of the illness of Nogueira," Mir said of what he's heard about his victory over Nogueira.

Mir then added, "No excuses afterward."

Although Mir said he realizes that health problems can affect a fighter, he thinks that if you agree to take a fight, it's disrespectful to your opponent to bring up those health issues after the fact.

"As fighters, any time you say you lost because of injury, that's a strike against your opponent," Mir said. "No, the guy in front of you beat you."

In his last two fights, Mir beat Roy Nelson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/roy/nelson/1015/) and Mirko Cro Cop, and he said he believes he's getting close to heavyweight title contention if he makes it three in a row against Nogueira. But Mir said he's expecting to see an even better version of Nogueira at UFC 140, considering how impressive Nogueira looked in his victory over Brendan Schaub (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brendan/schaub/1161/) in August.

"His confidence has to be up higher," Mir said. "You see it in all sports, when people's confidence is high that can be the difference between them being successful and not."

And if he is able to beat a Nogueira who's riding high after beating Schaub, Mir won't want to hear any excuses.

Als ik me goed herinner is er door Nogueira helemaal niets gezegd na het gevecht, maar was het Dana White die het ter sprake bracht.
Hoe dan ook, een gezonde Nog tegen Mir levert hopelijk een interessant gevecht op.

Jon Jones: 'I'm the Best Fighter I've Ever Been Right Now'

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) says he'll be better than ever when he steps into the Octagon with Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/) at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/).

Jones said on The MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Hour that he's been training four times a day, and that he's physically stronger, in better shape and a better mixed martial artist than he's ever been before.

"Judging on my numbers in the weight room, judging on my numbers in the cardio tests, it's the best I've ever been," Jones said. "I'm the best fighter that I've ever been right now."

If that's true it would be bad news for Machida, as in Jones's last two fights he had no trouble running through two fighters who have previously beaten Machida, Shogun Rua and Rampage Jackson. Jones also said that he believes that dealing with Rampage before their previous fight -- when Rampage frequently denigrated Jones -- has made him mentally stronger.

"Rampage elevated me in a way of being able to handle future opponents who are going to get under my skin and try to trash talk me," Jones said.

As Jones has become one of the freshest faces and brightest young stars in the UFC, there's been something of a backlash among MMA fans , and Jones said he hears from fans on Twitter who tell him he's too cocky or arrogant. Jones said he's not sure what he's done to inspire that kind of backlash, but he has learned to accept it.

"I could see if I was Floyd Mayweather," Jones said, referring to the brash boxing champ who seems to delight in making fans hate him. "I deal with it by realizing that not everyone's going to love you."

Although Jones has become a star, he says that hasn't changed who he is deep down -- even though he has changed as a fighter and become, in his own mind, better than ever.

"In high school I got the free lunch because we didn't have the finances to go to Wendy's for lunch like the other kids," Jones said. "That I got good at fighting ... that changes nothing about the real world. I have changed as an athlete -- I believe in my heart that I'm the best, I believe I won't lose to Lyoto, or Rashad [Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/)], or [Dan] Henderson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/henderson/129/) or any of the other guys. ... As 'Bones' I'm growing and yeah I'm a little cocky and it's important to be that way. But as Jonathan, in the real world, everyone who meets me will say I treated them with the utmost respect."

Machida: Don't be suprised if i take Jones down

Conventional wisdom has Lyoto Machida trying to keep it standing when he faces Jon Jones this weekend and attempts to take the light-heavyweight title from him.

A black belt in his own family style of karate - which has hefty doses of Muay Thai and boxing thrown in - the Brazilian former champion has caused problems for all his opponents bar one when standing with them. He is famously hard to hit, throws his own shots with raw power and has an unusual arsenal which opponents cannot always pre-empt.

But that also sounds a lot like Jones, who already has a reputation as one of the most unorthodox fighters in the UFC. He seamlessly blends techniques from different arts to produce a style which has allowed him (bar one disqualification) to remain undefeated for his whole career.

“I guess it’s hard to predict how things will go on during the fight, but we trained a lot offensive wrestling, me taking him down. Besides the takedown defenses, we trained counterattacks with the takedowns, so if I take him down, it won’t be a surprise for me, for my team, because we know what we’ve been doing here,” Machida told Tatame. (http://www.tatame.com/2011/12/03/Dont-be-surprised-if-you-see-Lyoto-Machida-take-Jon-Jones-down-at-UFC-140)

He has been working with Muhammad ‘King Mo’ Lawal on his wrestling, but much of that will probably be defensive work. Machida’s chosen way of bring the fight to the floor is the foot-sweep, which he has proven his effectiveness with time and again.

If he can get Jones down and keep him there the fight will become extremely interesting as we have not seen enough of Jones working from his back to assess his Jiu Jitsu, although the flying triangle attempt on Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson recently suggests that he is as creative there as he is striking.

The fight takes place this weekend as the headline bout of UFC 140, which is being staged at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada.

Predictions on the five pay-per-view fights below.

Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida
With a win, Jones would put a bow on what may have been the best year any fighter has ever had in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc): Jones has already destroyed Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/), Shogun Rua and Rampage Jackson in 2011, and adding Lyoto Machida to that list would be an incredible feat.

Machida, however, may be the light heavyweight whose style is the trickiest for Jones to handle. Machida is so elusive that Jones is going to have a hard time getting to him even with his decided reach advantage, and Machida is such a good counter-striker that Jones is going to have to be careful not to get too fancy. Machida has frustrated a lot of great fighters, and it wouldn't shock me to see him win a decision.

But Jones has been so dominant of late that I simply can't pick against him. If Jones is able to take Machida down he should be able to use his superior strength to bully him on the ground, and even if the fight remains standing, Jones is eventually going to tag Machida the way Shogun Rua did. Of all the light heavyweights in the world, I give Machida the best chance of beating Jones. But right now I'd pick Jones over anyone.
Pick: Jones

Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Mir has made no secret that he's a little annoyed that he even has to give Nogueira a rematch, three years after Mir won by TKO. And Mir really doesn't like the fact that Nogueira and his supporters have suggested that an illness prior to the last fight is the reason Nogueira won.

This time around there should be no excuses, and the fight should go more or less the way the last one did: Mir will get the better of Nogueira standing, and he won't even try to engage Nogueira on the ground. Nogueira did earn a solid win over Brendan Schaub (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brendan/schaub/1161/) in August, but to the extent that these two have changed since the last time they fought, I think Mir has become bigger and stronger while Nogueira has become older and slower.
Pick: Mir

Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogério Nogueira
A year ago Ortiz was largely written off as washed up, but he deserves a lot of credit for persevering: He beat Ryan Bader soundly and then fought a good fight in a losing effort against Rashad Evans. And the mere fact that Ortiz is now preparing to fight for the third time in less than six months, after fighting only once a year every year from 2007 to 2010, says a lot about how much healthier he is after his recovery from back surgery.

Nogueira, on the other hand, is on a two-fight losing streak and hasn't had a really strong performance since he TKO'd Luiz Cane more than two years ago. If either one of these guys has looked washed up recently, it's Little Nog.

However, in this particular matchup Nogueira's boxing is going to carry the day: Nogueira should be able to keep Ortiz at range and batter him with punches, and eventually Nogueira will wear Ortiz down enough to win by TKO.
Pick: Nogueira

Claude Patrick vs. Brian Ebersole
Patrick is 3-0 since signing with the UFC lat year, and if he can win this one he'll start to make some noise in the welterweight division. But Ebersole, who's been fighting for 11 years, is much more experienced than Patrick and has a more versatile ground game, and should be able to win a decision.
Pick: Ebersole

Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung
My pick for fight of the night, Hominick vs. Jung has all the makings to be one of those fights that makes you lean forward, clench your fists and stare in awe of the intensity of the action. Hominick will have the hometown crowd on his side in Toronto, just as he did the last time he fought, when he lost to Jose Aldo at UFC 129, but in that fight it was a Rocky-like crowd, cheering him because he simply wouldn't quit no matter how much punishment he took. In this fight, Hominick will be the better striker in the cage, and he should be able to out-land Jung and win convincingly.
Pick: Hominick

The Cut List: Who's in Desperate Need of a Win at UFC 140?

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) returns to Toronto this weekend for another big pay-per-view event, though don't expect an all-star stadium show this time around. What you can expect at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) is a quality card with some big name fighters who are hungry for a win, along with a few lesser-knowns who need a victory just to make sure there are presents under the tree this Christmas.

So who needs a win like Dana White needs a Saturday night off, and what are their chances for a bright future and an upbeat after-party? For answers, we turn to the Cut List.

Tito Ortiz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tito/ortiz/234/) (16-9-1, 15-9-1 UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc))
Who he's facing: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rogerio/nogueira/797/)
Why he's in danger: Remember back before his career-salvaging victory at UFC 132 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+132/), when Dana White said, "Dude, it's 2011; He's got to win"? Yeah, well I'm pretty sure he didn't mean, 'He's got to win once and then never again.' Ortiz rose from the ashes with his surprising submission of Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/), and then he further ingratiated himself to the UFC by offering to step up and fight Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) just a month later. The UFC was so grateful for that favor, it probably didn't even care that he went right back to his losing ways with a second-round TKO. A little goodwill is a fine thing to have in this business, but Ortiz is still 1-5-1 in his last seven bouts, stretching all the way back to 2006. I can see cutting him some slack after his two-month stint as unlikely hero this summer, but how long can he survive on those rapidly fading glories? If he loses to Nogueira, as oddsmakers expect him to, then what? He'll still be a marketable commodity, still one of the UFC's most famous, yet least successful fighters, and he'll still be the guy who did the UFC a solid when others wouldn't. That will buy him some time, but it won't make him untouchable. He's still got to win a few fights here and there, and he'd really help himself out if he can start with a middle-aged Brazilian.
Outlook: Not good. Ortiz is in a tough spot. He's too famous and too expensive for the UFC to put him in against mid-card guys, but he's not quite well-rounded enough to handle the new generation of talented 205-pounders. I don't want to say the game has passed him by, but...okay, it probably has. I think he loses this fight, but still gets one more chance to pull off a resurrection. The more fights he drops, the more the win over Bader looks like one good night in a sea of bad ones.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rogerio/nogueira/797/) (19-5, 2-2 UFC)
Who he's facing: Tito Ortiz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tito/ortiz/234/)
Why he's in danger: After dropping back-to-back decisions to Ryan Bader (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryan/bader/503/) and then Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/), Little Nog is now one defeat away from the dreaded three-fight losing streak. He's also 35 years old and the lesser-known of the two Nogueira brothers in the UFC, so it's not at all unfathomable that a loss here could convince the brass that they're carrying one more Nogueira than they need. Face it, it's not as if the UFC is hurting for popular Brazilian fighters at this point. They've got better and they've got younger, so what does Little Nog bring to the table? His ability to shut down strong wrestlers (which the division is positively choking with these days) is questionable at best, and he hasn't finished an opponent since his UFC debut a little over two years ago. So what's keeping him employed? Well, he's still a Nogueira, which is the Brazilian MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) equivalent of being a Baldwin brother. Even if he might be Stephen to Big Nog's Alec, it's still better than being some nobody. Plus, he's still a threat when he can stay upright. If his takedown defense is good enough to force a stand-up fight with Ortiz, you have to like his chances.
Outlook: Cautiously optimistic. I think he beats Ortiz, barring another career resurrection by the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy." Even if he loses, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get one more go. Long-term, it's hard to see him lasting in this division with this style.

Dennis Hallman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dennis/hallman/250/) (50-14-2 [1 NC], 3-5 UFC)
Who he's facing: John Makdessi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/john/makdessi/1675/)
Why he's in danger: Did you see the man's speedos at UFC 133 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+133/)? Better yet, did you catch Dana White's reaction to the speedos? Personally, I thought it was kind of funny, and not too different from the stuff we see MMA fighters wear with a straight face, but apparently the boss isn't into that brand of humor. It's never a good sign for your career when the other guy gets a bonus solely for getting you and your wardrobe off TV quickly. Hallman didn't make many friends in the UFC that night, and he was already on slightly shaky ground. At 36, Hallman is the journeyman's journeyman. There were times when he would have fought on a week's notice in your living room for a hundred bucks, and he'd even help move the furniture back into place afterward. He put together a couple UFC wins over guys who have since been shown the door, but he squandered whatever good will he had with the speedo stunt. Now he needs to win just to stay viable, and Makdessi's an unbeaten prospect who could make up for what he lacks in experience (and few are as experienced as Hallman) with youth and speed. If Hallman becomes the latest Makdessi knockout victim, you just know White would take pleasure in informing Hallman that he'll soon have plenty of free time to spend sunbathing on the French Riviera.
Outlook: Grim. Hallman's as grizzled a vet as they come, and if he shows up healthy he could definitely give Makdessi problems. Still, he'll need to save a kitten from a burning building to get back in White's good graces. That kitten had better be cute, too. And just adorably smudged with ash, blinking its big, innocent eyes at the new world that Hallman's heroism has allowed it see. Sorry, got carried away.

Mark Bocek: (9-4, 5-4 UFC)
Who he's facing: Nik Lentz
Why he's in danger: Bocek has spent more than half his career quietly toiling away in the UFC, but he's yet to really distinguish himself. He doesn't have a single win over anyone who's still in the UFC, and every time he's faced a high-level opponent he's ended up on the losing end. Then again, he's been in there with some tough customers -- guys like Frankie Edgar, Ben Henderson, and Jim Miller. In fact, the only loss on his record where he hasn't been vindicated by future results is a submission loss to Mac Danzig, so cut him some slack, right? To a point, yes. But eventually he's going to start to look like a guy who'll never be really popular with the fans, will never be anything more than a mid-level truth serum for guys who don't belong in the UFC at all, and is only useful on the fight cards where the UFC needs a local boy. If he loses to Lentz, who has a way of making people look bad, things could come to a head sooner rather than later for Bocek.
Outlook: Hazy. He's a skilled enough fighter that he can still beat a lot of people on the UFC roster, but will he ever beat the big boys? I doubt it, and you can only hang around the middle for so long.

Jon Jones Doesn't Envy Lyoto Machida's Tough Task, and He's Not Alone

TORONTO -- Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JonJones/) strolled into Wednesday's open workouts with the look of a man who knew he was walking into his own surprise birthday party. He smiled and bowed his head at all the attention, as if somehow shocked by how many people had filled the sturdy little bomb shelter of a gym, but he knew this was coming. He knew he'd be the main attraction, and he didn't mind one bit.

And why shouldn't it be this way? Just a few days away from his second light heavyweight title defense -- this time against Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/LyotoMachida/) at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC140/) -- few are expecting anything other than another demonstration of Jones' physical and technical superiority.

"I think it's a rough fight for Machida, to be honest with you," said fellow UFC 140 main card fighter Frank Mir (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/FrankMir/).

"Is [Machida] capable [of beating Jones]? Of course he's capable, 100 percent," said former Machida foe Tito Ortiz (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/TitoOrtiz/). "Will he do it? I don't think so. I think Jon Jones is on a roll. His confidence is through the roof. He feels untouchable."

Tito Ortiz Sets a Date for Retirement, But Can He Keep It?

When you get to be a fighter of Tito Ortiz (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/TitoOrtiz/)'s age and stature, there's really no escaping these kinds of questions. Not for long, anyway. People see you fighting into your mid-30s with mixed success and they want to know, how long can he keep this up? Perhaps what they really want to know is, how long does he think he can keep this up?

In other words, it's the kind of question where you don't necessarily expect an honest or even realistic answer. Maybe that's why Ortiz's response at Wednesday's UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC140/) open workouts was so surprising.

"May 30, 2012," he told reporters. At first it sounded like a joke. As if he was getting intentionally overly specific to mock the idea that something like this could be planned. After all, May 30 is a Wednesday. Is he going to end his career with a sparring session?

Then he kept going, and it became clear: Tito is serious about this.

"That'll be 15 years," Ortiz said of the May 30th mark. "15 years has been my goal. I make it to 15 years, that'd be my second fight, finishing this contract, maybe it's time to hang up the gloves, walk away while I'm still healthy. I don't want to get any more surgeries. I have three boys. I have a family to take care of. I've made enough money to take care of my family now."

And when you think about it, that's the reasonable response. If anything, maybe it's too reasonable. After some of his contemporaries have been dragged kicking and screaming from the sport, who would have guessed that Ortiz would be the level-headed one to set a date? Who would have guessed that Ortiz would be the one to realize about himself exactly what others have said of guys like Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva?

"What else do I got to prove?" Ortiz said. "I don't have to prove anything else in this MMA world."

But then, it's one thing to set a date, and another thing entirely to keep it. Fighters think retirement sounds difficult in theory, but it's nothing compared to the real thing. Many a pugilist has hung up the gloves, only to take them down and put them back on when the rocking chair didn't prove to be as satisfying as they thought.

Ortiz says the date is "set in stone in my own mind," and you have to admit he has some good reasons. The surgeries have piled up lately, his neck is an almost constant concern, and there's the very real chance that he might stick around too long and do something to himself that cannot be undone. As he explained, he'd like to be able to play catch with his boys somewhere down the line, rather than grinding every last ounce of usefulness out of his body in pursuit of a paycheck he doesn't really need at this point.

He doesn't expect retirement to come easy, he said, "but I don't want to disrespect the sport. I don't want to stay over my welcome. I want to make sure I walk away healthy. It's a family decision for me."

He even has an idea of how he'd like to go out between now and May 30 of next year, regardless of how Saturday night's fight against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/AntonioRogerioNogueira/) turns out.

"My last fight I would love to be against Forrest [Griffin]," he said. "I think I deserve that. I beat him the first time. The second time we fought, I beat him and they gave it to him. Let's do three of a kind."

What, you thought just because he was leaving, he was going to stop being "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy"? He might have the self-awareness to see for himself when the ride is over, but that doesn't mean he's going to start acting like the sport's elder statesman just yet.

But you have to give him credit -- or at least you will if actually sticks to his own plan. So many of his peers haven't been able to recognize the end for what it is, even when it's staring them in the face. Ortiz could go on, but that doesn't mean he has to. Not after the time he's put in, and the toll it's already taken on him.

"15 years is a long time," he said. "To get up and do what I do every single day for 15 years, it's hard."

After that long, waking up on the morning of May 31 and figuring out what to do next might not be so easy either.

Jon Jones Smiles at the Haters at UFC 140 Weigh-Ins

The pressure that comes with wearing a UFC championship belt might take its toll on some fighters, but light heavyweight champ Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/JonJones/) seems to only get more comfortable with the idea as time wears on. The 24-year-old phenom soaked up the cheers and the jeers with a calm smile and a friendly wave at the Air Canada Centre on Friday afternoon, weighing in at 205 pounds on the nose for his title defense against former champ Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/LyotoMachida/) at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC140/) on Saturday night.

Machida, on the other hand, seemed gripped by a nervous intensity from the moment he hit the stage. The 33-year-old Brazilian kept a stone-faced countenance as he clocked in at 204 pounds for the bout. Jones, meanwhile, seemed less affected than ever by the mixed response, looking loose and relaxed all the way through the afternoon's proceedings.

The weigh-in wasn't such a light-hearted affair for every fighter on the card, however. Dennis Hallman (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/DennisHallman/)'s move to lightweight got off to a rocky start as he weighed in at 158.5 pounds for a 155-pound bout. Elsewhere on the undercard, Canadian Mitch Clarke (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/MitchClarke/) looked like he'd stumbled onto the stage straight from the sauna, wavering on the scale as if he might pass out at any moment. However nasty the cut may have been, at least Clarke was successful. He might have even been too successful, as he came in a half-pound under the lightweight mark at 154.5 pounds.
