Pure brute strength. Speed to burn. Competitive glory. Championship belt-wearing, real and otherwise. And the hitting!* Ahhh, the hitting.

There is no shortage of overlap between pro football and mixed martial arts. That’s not to say that success in either sport is 1:1 proposition. Just ask Michael Westbrook about that, or Brock Lesnar.

But to be certain, plenty of players in today’s NFL seem to have the physical and mental toolkits to make a go of it in the UFC, Bellator or another promotion. This is especially true now that MMA’s increasing visibility is making it an increasingly popular workout option for footballers. In fact, Fox announcer Jay Glazer and former UFC champion Randy Couture have teamed up to form MMAthletics, a full-time training center for professional athletes in sports other than MMA.

You’ll see plenty of MMAthletics clients on this list, as well as those with some kind of background in combat sports. But you’ll also see guys with great combinations of size, speed, strength and athleticism who would seem to be particularly good candidates for the cage.

And the really good news is, in MMA, you're allowed—nay, encouragedto hold.

Interssant 'what if' stukje.

- New York Giants Jimmy Kennedy suspended, 4 games (NFL Policy on PED's)
- Indianapolis Colts Jaimie Thomas suspended, 4 games (NFL Substance Abuse Policy)
- Antwan Odom suspended (4 games (nfl policy on ped's)).

NEW YORK -- The NFL is adding game-day testing for performance-enhancing substances -- but not recreational drugs -- this season under the new collective bargaining agreement.

The league's senior vice president of law and labor policy, Adolpho Birch, said Tuesday on a conference call with reporters that tests weren't conducted in the past on days there were games "because of logistical issues involved, much more so than any philosophical issues."

Birch, who oversees the NFL's drug program, added that the league had developed a way to test that "is not overly disruptive to the clubs and that respects the game-day process."

Birch would not say where talks between the NFL and the players' union stand -- or even if they've started -- about details that need to be worked out before the league can introduce random, year-round blood testing for human growth hormone.

The NFL and union agreed last week that HGH testing can become part of the sport's drug program under the new, 10-year collective bargaining agreement that was ratified by players Thursday. But first issues such as the appeals process and how tests are taken have to be negotiated.

"The key to this testing is the randomness of it, and that every player is subject to and eligible for testing on a year-round basis, with no notice," Birch said.

The only limitation on the number of tests is that a player may be tested a maximum of six times each offseason, from February until the start of training camp.

"I would certainly expect players will be tested in an amount that will be meaningful. But more important, the idea is not so much the number of tests performed, but it is the constant threat of testing that provides the key to deterrence under this particular program," Birch said.

The N.F.L.’s new drug-testing program includes provisions under which all players will be tested for human growth hormone at least once a year, and possibly many more times, the league said Saturday. Tests for growth hormone require a blood sample, and the N.F.L. will be the first major American sports league to carry out blood testing at the major league level. League officials also said Saturday that this season, for the first time, drug tests would be conducted on game days. Under the drug policy, there is no limit to how often players can be tested for steroids and H.G.H. during the season, and they can be tested up to six times in the off-season, said the league spokesman Greg Aiello.
