The Ultimate Fighting Championship won't wait long to return to spiritual home of mixed martial arts.

Following this past August's ultra-successful UFC 134 event, the UFC will return to Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena on Jan. 14 for an event expected to serve as UFC 142.

MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) today confirmed the booking with UFC officials.

The UFC has yet to make an official announcement regarding the event, and potential fight bookings for the card have yet to be revealed

UFC president Dana White first revealed the company's plan to Brazilian outlet UOL (http://esporte.uol.com.br/lutas/vale-tudo/ultimas-noticias/2011/10/28/dana-white-confirma-volta-do-ufc-ao-rj-e-outros-dois-eventos-no-brasil-em-2012.htm) but did not confirm the date or location. UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta recently completed a trip to Brazil, where he was said to be completing the UFC's January return to the country, as well as scouting out possible future host cities in the South American nation.

On Thursday, White said Brazil (http://mmajunkie.com/news/25835/white-says-tuf-brazil-a-done-deal-will-hold-as-many-events-as-possible-in-country.mma) will soon host the first-ever international version of "The Ultimate Fighter" and should also expect to see the promotion make frequent visits to the country.

"It's a huge market for us," White said of Brazil. "It's incredible down there. We're going to do as many as we possibly can."

The UFC is also expected to announce a new partnership with Brazilian television network Globo. Following Thursday's pre-UFC 137 press conference, White was asked about a rumored deal but declined to offer any comment.

For the latest on UFC 142 (http://mmajunkie.com/event/869/ufc-142-in-rio.mma), stay tuned to the UFC Rumors (http://mmajunkie.com/Rumors) section of the site

eerste gevecht staat trouwens al vast, namelijk

MW: Vitor Belfort vs Anthony Johnson

Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes Square Off for Featherweight Gold at UFC 142

Less than a month after successfully defending his UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) featherweight belt, champion Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) has his next assignment.

The Brazilian will return home and attempt to extend his current run of dominance over the division in a stern test against undefeated American Chad Mendes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chad/mendes/1484/). The bout will take place at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) in Brazil, though an exact venue has yet to be officially announced.

UFC president Dana White broke the news to FoxSports.com (http://msn.foxsports.com/boxing/story/UFC-featherweight-champion-Jose-Aldo-to-fight-Chad-Mendes-103111) on Monday night.

The matchup comes as no surprise. Shortly after Aldo defended the belt in a win over Kenny Florian (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kenny/florian/270/) at UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/) on October 8, White said that Mendes was his likely next challenger.

Aldo (20-1) has not lost a fight in six years, and has won 13 in a row. Since winning the WEC championship in Nov. 2009, Aldo has defeated all four of his challengers, even as the promotion was absorbed by the UFC and the belt was re-christened as the UFC championship.

Mendes is a perfect 11-0 in his career. He debuted under the Zuffa banner in March 2010 and has won all six of his fights. His most recent bout came against Rani Yahya (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rani/yahya/1044/) at UFC 133 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+133/), a fight which he won by unanimous decision.

Some have speculated that Mendes, a former two-time collegiate wrestling All-American, could give Aldo trouble by employing his grinding style. Thus far in his career, though, Aldo has been up to the challenge. According to FightMetric (http://hosteddb.fightmetric.com/fighters/details/1052), he's only been taken down twice in his last 10 fights, and has successfully defended 94 percent of the takedown attempts against him.

The Aldo vs. Mendes fight is the first one officially announced by the UFC for the January 14 event.

Anthony Johnson Moves to Middleweight, Will Face Vitor Belfort at UFC 142

Anthony Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/johnson/516/) has finally made the step most felt was inevitable, moving up a division to middleweight.

It won't take him long to get tested at his new home. The fearsome slugger will step right into the upper echelon of the division when he takes on Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/) at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/).

The promotion confirmed the matchup on Tuesday.

Johnson has spent his entire UFC career at 170 pounds, though he's struggled to make weight on more than one occasion. The timing of the move comes as a bit of a surprise though, as Johnson returned from a 16-month absence earlier this year and got off to a 2-0 start with wins over Dan Hardy (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/hardy/492/) and Charlie Brenneman (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/charlie/brenneman/1478/).

Belfort would represent his highest-ranked opponent since losing to Josh Koscheck (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/josh/koscheck/330/) in November 2009.

Johnson is 10-3 overall with seven knockouts, and has won five of his last six.

Belfort recently rebounded from a UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) 126 title fight loss to Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) by knocking out Yoshihiro Akiyama (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yoshihiro/akiyama/914/) in August. That upped his record to 20-9.

UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) will take place on January 14 from a yet-to-be determined location in Brazil. The only other officially announced bout is a featherweight title bout with champion Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) attempting to defend his belt against Chad Mendes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chad/mendes/1484/).

Ik heb idd ook een gevoel dat A. Silva nog aan die card wordt toegevoegd. Sonnen, anyone ;). En het is nog niet zeker of het in Rio wordt gehouden. Brasilia zou ook een mooie locatie zijn.

UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes/ Belfort vs. Johnson

http://www.mmabrazucas.com/wp-content/themes/arras-theme/library/timthumb.php?src=http://www.mmabrazucas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/ufcBrasil.jpg&w=630&h=250&zc=1

It’s official! President of UFC, Dana White announced today the return of the biggest MMA event of the world to Brazil on January 14th of 2012, and the main event will be a title fight.

Everything points out for the edition number 142 of the event to happen on Rio de Janeiro, but specific place, and even the city, haven’t been defined yet. HSBC Arena, which hosted the show on August 27th, is the most likely option for UFC 142.

Jose Aldo, featherweight champ, will have to face the so far undefeated Chad Mendes. While Aldo is coming from title defenses against Mark Hominick and Kenny Florian, the American is coming from a triumph over the Brazilian Rani Yahya.

One of the stars of the first edition of UFC in Brazil, in 1998, Vitor Belfort will be back to the country on the show as well. His opponent will be Anthony Johnson, who’ll be fighting for the first time among the middleweights.

Thiago Tavares-Sam Stout, Edson Barboza-Terry Etim Slated for UFC 142 in Brazil

Thiago Tavares and Edson Barboza (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/edson/barboza/1657/) will compete in their home country of Brazil when they face Sam Stout (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/sam/stout/520/) and Terry Etim (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/terry/etim/539/), respectively, at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) on Jan. 14 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) revealed the lightweight matchups on Tuesday via Twitter.

In 2011, Tavares (16-4-1) was brutally knocked out by Shane Roller in March and bounced back with a TKO over Spencer Fisher at UFC 134 in August. Canadian striker Stout (17-6-1) is on a two-fight win streak and was supposed to face Dennis Siver last month at UFC 137 but bowed out due to injury.

Much talked about for his devastating leg kicks, Barboza (9-0) has won all three of his UFC fights with his last two named Fight of the Nights. In August, he beat Ross Pearson in a split decision. Etim out of England is coming off a spectacular win this past Saturday at UFC 138 where he submitted Eddie Faaloloto with a guillotine choke in 17 seconds. UFC 142 will be Etim's tenth UFC fight and his ninth outside of the U.S.

In the co-main events for the UFC 142 card, Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) will put his featherweight belt on the line against Chad Mendes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chad/mendes/1484/) and Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/) will meet Anthony Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/johnson/516/) in a middleweight showdown.

Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Massenzio Added to UFC 142

Brazilian middleweight powerhouse Rousimar Palhares (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rousimar/palhares/404/) is the latest native fighter to agree to compete in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s return to his home country. The enigmatic athlete will take his two-fight win streak into a UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) matchup with American Mike Massenzio (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/massenzio/493/).

The UFC confirmed the fight's booking late on Tuesday night.

Palhares is coming off one of the stranger wins of the year in MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) in a decision over Dan Miller (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dan/miller/445/). In the first round of the bout, Palhares battered Miller on the ground to the point he believed the fight was over, then rose off the canvas and jumped on the cage to celebrate even though the fight was still ongoing. Referee Herb Dean had to talk him off the cage and back into the fight, and Palhares went on to win by decision.

That wasn't the only lapse in concentration he's shown in the cage. Back in a September 2010 loss to Nate Marquardt (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nate/marquardt/372/), he turned to the referee to complain about Marquardt's slippery legs even as Marquardt went for and earned a TKO finish. Overall though, Palhares (13-3) has won five of his last six fights.

Massenzio (13-5) has won two of his last three, most recently defeating Steve Cantwell (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/steve/cantwell/547/) in a unanimous decision at UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/).

UFC 142 will take place in Brazil though the UFC has yet to make a host city and venue official, but it is expected to return to Rio, the site of UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) in August.

Omigawa vs. Alcantara, Arantes vs. Carvalho Added to UFC 142

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) has added a pair of intriguing featherweight fights to its return to Brazil.

Michihiro Omigawa (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michihiro/omigawa/252/) vs. Yuri Alcantara (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yuri/alcantara/1706/) and Felipe Arantes vs. Antonio Carvalho have been added to UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/), which is scheduled to take place Jan. 14 in Brazil. An exact city and venue has yet to be announced.

Most considered Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/)'s Omigawa (13-10-1) a lock for the UFC's return to Japan in February, but after picking up his first UFC win earlier this month against Jason Young (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jason/young/1802/) at UFC 138 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+138/), the organization decided to book him against the 26-3 Alcantara, who defeated Felipe Arantes at UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) in Rio de Janeiro.

Speaking of Arantes (13-4), he will look to rebound against the debuting Carvalho, who was supposed to fight Alcantara at UFC 134 before an injury forced him to pull out of the bout. Carvalho will enter the Octagon for the first time with an identical 13-4 record and has defeated the likes of Takeshi Inoue (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/takeshi/inoue/1645/), Hatsu Hioki and Doug Evans en route to the UFC.

UFC 142 will be headlined by another pair of featherweights -- featherweight champion Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes -- as well as Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson.

Fabricio Werdum eyes return to UFC, welcomes fight with Brendan Schaub

Fabricio Werdum (14-5-1 MMA, 3-1 SF) is, as musician Jack Johnson once said, "Sitting, waiting, wishing."

The 34-year-old heavyweight is currently stuck in limbo as UFC parent company Zuffa, LLC and Showtime are behind closed doors deciding what may or may not become of the (still fairly recently purchased) Strikeforce promotion.

Werdum would like nothing more than the ability to transition over to the UFC like former colleagues Dan Henderson, Alistair Overeem, Nick Diaz, Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Cung Le have done in recent months.

"My motivation now is to fight the best guys in the world in the UFC," Werdum told MMAjunkie.com.

"Yeah, I have a (Strikeforce) contract, but it's the same organization now. Everything is the same."

It wasn't that long ago when Werdum was marching towards a title shot in his first go around with the UFC following back-to-back TKO wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera at UFC 80 and 85, respectively.

But after entering UFC 90 in October 2008 with a noticeable weight gain, he was swiftly dispatched by UFC newcomer (and now current UFC champion) Junior Dos Santos, and promptly cut.

Strikeforce swooped in and gave him the platform to resurrect his career.

"Vai Cavalo" took full advantage.

Consecutive wins over Mike Kyle and Antonio Silva, followed by his authoring of one of the biggest upsets in MMA history in defeating Fedor Emelianenko by first round triangle-armbar, and he was once again ascending up the heavyweight ranks.

After a year layoff he fought Alistair Overeem in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament.

Despite more than holding his own in what was predominantly a kickboxing match against the 2010 K-1 world grand prix champion, the judges gave the nod to Overeem in the end.

Now he's patiently waiting for a phone call from the UFC.

"I'm waiting for the opportunity, maybe," Werdum said. "But, I don't know. My next goal is just to come back to the UFC. I don't know who I want to fight, but my next goal is just to come back to the UFC."

Brendan Schaub has been rumored in recent weeks as a potential opponent, and its one Werdum is more than willing to sign up for.

And if it could take place at UFC 142 on January 14, 2012 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, even better.

Werdum, a Porto Alegre native, is 2-0 with two knockouts in his career fighting in Brazil with his last win coming in May 2004 when he was a still green to the sport fighting for Jungle Fight.

"I like the fans in Brazil because I watched the last fight in Brazil (UFC 134), the last UFC," Werdum said. "I liked the motivation the guys there had in my city, my country. It would be good to fight there. It would be fun."

Brazil would simply be icing on the cake. Whatever it takes for him to swap the hexagon for the octagon, he's willing to do.

"My next goal is to come back to the UFC anywhere," Werdum said. "No problem. In Brazil. In Vegas. In Japan. Maybe if they have UFC on the moon, I'd go too.

"My life is fighting. I love to fight. I am hungry for fights."

Jose Aldo Hopes to Sell Out a Soccer Stadium and Other UFC 142 Notes

UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) featherweight champion Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) appeared in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, where he'll defend his title against Chad Mendes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chad/mendes/1484/) at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) next month. That fight will take place at the HSBC Arena, where the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) played before a capacity crowd in August. But Aldo is hoping to fight in a much bigger Brazilian venue in the future.

"I hope one day to be able to fight in a football stadium," Aldo said.

That opportunity may come soon: UFC President Dana White said that while he's in Brazil this week he'll be looking at stadiums, and there are indications that ticket demand remains very strong in Brazil. One Brazilian reporter pressed White on Tuesday about why so many fans were left disappointed in August when they couldn't get tickets. (White's advice: Get online immediately tickets go on sale Wednesday.)

Aldo, who will be fighting back home in Brazil for the first time since he signed with Zuffa in 2008, said there will be some distractions associated with having family and friends around, but he said that won't make a difference come fight time.

"I have to put all that out of my mind," Aldo said.

Some other notes on the UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) press conference.

Mendes thinks he has one key advantage in preparing for Aldo: He trains every day with Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/), who has faced Aldo before. "Having a teammate in Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/) who's already fought Jose is an advantage for me," Mendes said. "We were able to sit down and put together a great game plan for this camp based on that. Urijah trains with me every day."

Don't get your hopes up for Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) vs. Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/): White has said he views Silva and Jones as the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but when a Brazilian reporter asked if that meant the two of them would fight each other, White said he doesn't see either man taking on an opponent outside his own weight class any time soon. "Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) has a couple of obligations. He has to fight the winner of Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) and Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/)," White said. "Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/) has been very reluctant to move up to 205 pounds. We'll see. We always try to make the fights that people want to see. If people want it, we'll try to make it."

Anthony Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anthony/johnson/516/) isn't expecting to go back down to welterweight: Johnson, who is moving up to middleweight to face Vitor Belfort (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vitor/belfort/295/) in the co-main event at UFC 142, said he's putting all his focus on his new weight class. "Right now 170 isn't in my mind at all," Johnson said. "My mission is to conquer 185."

Belfort thinks MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) can be bigger than soccer: "I remember when Dana White said UFC was going to become the No. 1 sport in the world," Belfort said. "He wasn't crazy when he said that."

Brazilian fans want to see some non-Brazilian stars: Multiple members of the Brazilian media questioned White about why none of the promotion's top North American stars are on this card. White said he has a lot of Brazilian fighters on the UFC roster who requested to fight in Brazil, and that didn't leave much room for non-Brazilian fighters. "This is our second fight here and you have people who it's always been their dream to fight here," White said. "But yes, we will bring in talent from around the world. Georgest St. Pierre or whoever else it might be. We do realize people here want to see them too."

Gabriel Gonzaga to Make UFC Return at UFC 142

One-time UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gabriel/gonzaga/375/) is back with the UFC.

According to his own Team Link academy (http://www.linkbjj.com/) website, the 32-year-old Brazilian has signed a four-fight deal with the UFC and will replace Rob Broughton (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rob/broughton/1603/) against Edinaldo Oliveira at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) in Brazil.

Gonzaga (12-6) is most remembered for his loss to Randy Couture in a heavyweight championship bout at UFC 74 in August 2007.

Gonzaga last competed for the UFC at UFC 121 in October 2010 in a loss to Brendan Schaub (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brendan/schaub/1161/), prompting the UFC to hand him his walking papers. Rather than fight for less money in smaller MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) promotions, Gonzaga said he would step away from MMA. But as most MMA "retirements" go, Gonzaga's absence was also short-lived. Gonzaga made his MMA return just under a year later, defeating Parker Porter this past October at a Reality Fighting event in Uncasville, Conn.

Oliveira (13-0-1) has spent his entire career in Brazil and will be making his UFC debut on Jan. 14.

Prater vs. Silva, Pyle vs. Funch Signed for UFC 142

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) has called upon a couple familiar names to fill two voids left open to due injury at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/).

Carlo Prater (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/carlo/prater/1099/), who once fought Carlos Condit (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/carlos/condit/663/) for the WEC welterweight title at WEC 32 in Feb. 2008, has agreed to replace the injured Siyar Bahadurzada against Erick Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/erick/silva/1820/) at next month's UFC 142 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. UFC Brazil's Twitter (https://twitter.com/#%21/ufc_brasil/status/147799352759435264) account first announced the news Friday evening.

In addition, the UFC Brazil Twitter (https://twitter.com/#%21/ufc_brasil/status/148081176240865280) account also announced that Ricardo Funch (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ricardo/funch/1149/), who was released from the organization in 2010, has agreed to replace Paulo Thiago (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/paulo/thiago/651/) against Mike Pyle (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mike/pyle/870/) at the same event. Funch (8-2) is 0-2 in the UFC, while Pyle (21-8-1) is 4-3 inside the Octagon.

The Prater-Silva fight will serve as a homecoming of sorts for the 30-year-old Prater, who was born in Rio. He went 0-2 in WEC before getting released after an Aug. 2008 loss to Brock Larson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brock/larson/311/). Since then, Prater (29-10-1) has fought for Shine Fights, MFC, and Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/), among other organizations. This fight will mark his UFC debut.

Silva (13-1), who is considered to be one of the top prospects coming out of Brazil, looked impressive in his Octagon debut defeating Luis Ramos in just 40 seconds via TKO at UFC 134 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+134/) in Rio. The win extended the 27-year-old's unbeaten streak to 10 in a row.

Funch fought once and won since his release from the UFC. He defeated Ryan Quinn via unanimous decision at Premier FC 7 just two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Pyle will look to get back on track after seeing his three-fight winning streak come to an end following a first-round TKO loss to Rory MacDonald (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rory/macdonald/1176/) at UFC 133 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+133/) in August.

UFC 142, headlined by Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jose/aldo/1052/) vs. Chad Mendes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chad/mendes/1484/) for the featherweight title, airs live on pay-per-view on Jan. 14.

Chad Mendes Confident He'll Beat Jose Aldo at UFC 142

Chad Mendes knows he's an underdog who will face a hostile crowd when he fights UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the main event at UFC 142. But Mendes is brimming with confidence at his chances of taking home the belt.

"I have a good game plan and I'm confident that I'm going to do it -- I'm excited," Mendes said Wednesday. "I think Jose has all the pressure on his shoulders. He's the one fighting in front of his home crowd. He's the one who has the belt. I'm the underdog everyone is overlooking, and I'm confident that the things I'm good at are what's needed to beat him. I'm feeling confident going into this fight."

That's not to say Mendes doesn't think highly of Aldo as an opponent. Mendes knows that Aldo is 20-1 in his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career, and that Aldo has gone 10-0 while dominating all ten opponents since leaving his native Brazil and making his North American debut in 2008. But Mendes thinks he has the right skill set to be the one to finally solve the puzzle of Aldo.

"I don't think Jose has any holes or cracks in his game," Mendes said. But he quickly added, "I feel the same way about my game. I don't have any holes."

Mendes has been working with his friend and training partner Urijah Faber, who lost a unanimous decision to Aldo in 2010, to formulate a game plan against Aldo. Mendes didn't give away all of his strategies, but he did say he believes other opponents have been too cautious and passive and failed to take the fight to Aldo.

"I've watched his last few fights and that's something that's helped us put together a good game plan for this fight. I've sat down with Urijah," Mendes said. "Fighters stand in front of him too much. You've got to put pressure on Jose. He's the kind who will pick you apart."

Given his wrestling background, it's no surprise that Mendes plans to clinch with Aldo and attempt to take him down.

"Guys have to get their hands on him more," Mendes said. "Honestly, I don't think any of the guys who have fought him have had half the wrestling credentials -- or the wrestling ability -- to get him down and hold him down. I think my strengths are my keys to beating Jose."

Mendes said he has no qualms about going to Brazil and beating a popular local fighter in front of a capacity crowd.

"Beating the champion in his own backyard? To me there's no better way to prove that I'm the best 145-pound fighter," Mendes said. "This is the best shape I've ever been in and I'm excited to get this opportunity."

Anthony Johnson in No Hurry to Go Back to Welterweight After UFC 142

Anthony Johnson is considered to be one of the top welterweights in the UFC, but his days of fighting at 170 pounds may be over.

"Rumble," who will make his middleweight debut against Vitor Belfort at UFC 142 next week, said on a Wednesday conference call that he isn't thinking about fighting at welterweight anymore.

"Right now, middleweight is where I am," Johnson said. "That's all I'm thinking about, and I really don't mind fighting middleweight because I get to eat more now. So like I said, I feel 1000 times better than I did when I fought [at] 170, so that's why I'm so happy and want to fight really bad."

Johnson, who said he currently weighed 215 pounds, would sometimes cut as much as sixty pounds to make the 171-pound welterweight limit. He even missed weight twice (UFC 76 and UFC 104), but despite the struggle to make weight, he never seriously flirted with the idea of moving up to 185 pounds.

That is until the UFC offered him a shot against Vitor Belfort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"This is going to be a lot of fun for me," Johnson said. "So that's why I feel so good because I don't have to cut the weight that I used to cut and I'm more explosive; I'm more athletic. Everything has just come to where it needs to be right now. I'm peaking at the right time."

Asked whether he was officially done as a welterweight, Johnson simply said, "so far."

UFC 142, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes for the UFC featherweight title, airs live on pay-per-view from the HSBC Arena in Rio on Jan. 14. The prelims will air on FX.

Gray Maynard Gives High Praise to Jose Aldo

By the time he's done in Brazil, Gray Maynard will have spent a little more than three weeks helping Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champion, prepare for his next title defense against Chad Mendes at UFC 142 on Jan. 14.

And while it seems like a no-brainer for Aldo to train with Maynard for this fight, considering Maynard is built very much like Mendes, the idea was actually Maynard's, not the champ's.

"I've talked to him backstage at the UFC's and [the UFC 136] press conference in Houston," Maynard told MMAFighting.com recently. "[He] really seemed like a humble, nice guy. So, I wanted to reach out to him to help."

Maynard has trained with some of the best fighters in the world at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, and more recently at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., but he believes Aldo may top them all.

"I knew he was good, but I had no idea he was as good as he is in every area. Really unbelievable, especially his takedown defense. That goes for all of Nova Uniao [Aldo's home gym] also.

"He's really one of the most, if not the most complete fighter I've ever worked with."

Maynard is coming off a UFC lightweight title loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 136 in Houston. The loss marked the first of his career. Since then, he's been a bit of a nomad, training at different gyms across the world. He said he is "still in the process of moving" gyms but did not commit to a new home just yet. He's also still waiting to finalize his next fight, which is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2012.

Interestingly enough, Maynard, who was complimentary of Mendes' skills, believes "Money" isn't quite ready to fight someone like Aldo, even though Mendes is getting his first title shot in his 12th pro fight, while Maynard fought for the UFC 155-pound title in just his 11th pro fight.

"I think Mendes is a tough kid, but I think its too early for him to fight Jose Aldo."

UFC 142, headlined by Aldo vs. Mendes, airs live on pay-per-view from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Anthony Johnson Finds New Life at New Weight, Thanks in Part to 'Blackzilians'

Looking back on it, maybe Anthony Johnson should have realized sooner that he wasn't meant to be a permanent welterweight. Maybe the revelation should have hit him during any one of his notoriously drastic weight cuts, but especially when he found himself trapped in a sauna in the days before his fight with Dan Hardy in Seattle last March.

"It was a rough cut," Johnson admits now. So rough, in fact, that he found himself threatening his own coaches with all manner of bodily harm when they wouldn't let him out of the sauna for even a second.

"I only had like five or six pounds to go, and when you're that dehydrated and you've been working so hard, your brain...you kind of get out there a little bit," Johnson said. "My strength and conditioning coach and everybody else were sitting behind the door so I couldn't get it open. I just wanted a breath of fresh air. That was it."

When they wouldn't let him have it, Johnson recalled with a chuckle, he threatened to "put something on y'all that you'll never forget." As anyone who's seen his run of knockout victories in the UFC already knows, that's a threat with teeth. Or at least it would have been if he hadn't been so depleted by the weight cut.

"I was too weak anyway," he said. "That was just my mind...making threats that I knew I couldn't keep."

That was the old way for Johnson. That particular brand of suffering constituted a normal part of fight week for him, which strikes his new coaches as more than a little bit insane.

"With really good athletes like Anthony Johnson, the worst thing you can do is cut weight," said Mike Van Arsdale, who works with Johnson and the rest of the "Blackzilian" squad at Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Fla. "You're cutting away your athletic ability, is what you're doing."

According to Van Arsdale, that's why the offer to fight Vitor Belfort at 185 pounds on Saturday night's UFC 142 card in Rio de Janeiro was the best thing that could have happened to Johnson.

"All he's done [by going up in weight] is enable himself to be who he was supposed to be to begin with. If you weigh 220 pounds, you don't need to be fighting at 170," Van Arsdale said. "It's crazy. You're trying to make 170 in the sauna and you end up sitting there at 189 and already depleted. That's why I think this is the right weight class for him."

For Johnson, the decision was simple. He didn't feel like he needed to flee the welterweight division after two straight victories, he said, but he also couldn't bring himself to say no to a fight with Belfort at middleweight.

"Everybody's been talking about me going up to 185," Johnson said. "It came sooner than I expected, but it's here now. What am I going to do? I'm not going to back down from any opponent. I'm not going to let people second-guess me or think that I'm scared of 185."

In Belfort, however, Johnson faces not just a bigger opponent, but one with proven knockout ability in the higher weight classes. In the last couple years he's starched opponents like Yoshihiro Akiyama and Rich Franklin with his one-punch power, and Johnson knows how dangerous he can be in the opening rounds.

But the real difference-maker, according to Johnson, won't be the numbers on the scale, but rather the quality of the time each man has spent in the gym. That's why the decision to join the Blackzilians in Florida was such an important one, he said.

"This is actually a camp that has real fighters and people that really want to win. We support each other through thick and thin. We don't badmouth each other. It's just a good environment with top-notch athletes."

As Van Arsdale explained, it's the intensity of the practices and the quality of the sparring partners that makes all the difference.

"Put it this way: if you're going to spar with [kickboxer] Tyrone Spong, and he's standing right in front of you and there's no way out of it, you're forced to rise up. That's what Anthony's done," said Van Arsdale. "You're going with that guy -- and he's 15 pounds or so heavier than Anthony -- how are you not going to get better at kickboxing? And the same thing when you're wrestling with Rashad Evans and guys from the Olympic Training Center every day in practice, how could you not get better at wrestling?"

Beyond just the quality of talent on the mats each day, it's the support Johnson gets from his fellow fighters that has showed him what he was missing before, he said.

"I didn't have a family like I have now. I had a team in certain teams I was a part of, but this is not a team to me. This is a family."

According to Van Arsdale, both the move up in weight and the move to Florida have already paid tremendous dividends for Johnson, even if he doesn't think the combat sports community fully appreciates it just yet.

"I don't really read a lot of the stuff on the internet, but I was curious the other day and I looked on there and saw that Anthony Johnson's nowhere to be seen in the top ten at 170 or 185, and that's really funny," Van Arsdale said. "This guy is good, man. Ever since he went up a weight class, it's like he jumped up five extra steps. There's no real way to prepare for him now; you just have to go in there and try to catch him with something, and that's hard to do."

And yet, that's exactly what Belfort has excelled at in his career. Even Johnson admits that, based on the footage he's studied, there are few strikers more dangerous than "The Phenom" in the opening minutes of a fight. It's when the fight doesn't end during those first few minutes that he tends to struggle, Johnson said.

"His hands are always the most dangerous part, especially in that first round. ...But I'm sure Vitor doesn't want to get embarrassed, so he's going to come in really good shape. I'm putting a lot of pressure on him. I'm beating the hell out of him."

And the fact that they're fighting in Belfort's home country, where the crowd will no doubt be rabid in its support of their countryman? That doesn't matter to Johnson any more than Belfort's litany of past knockouts, since neither can get in the cage to help him.

"Vitor, to me, is just like everybody else," Johnson said. "He's a human. He's a fighter just like me. He's been around for a while, but so what? That doesn't mean anything to me. I respect him, but this is a fight."

And at least this time around, Johnson won't have to battle his own team and his own weight quite so ferociously just to make it into the cage.

UFC 142 Predictions

Will Jose Aldo continue to run roughshod over the featherweight division? Or will Chad Mendes pull off a huge upset in Aldo's homeland? Will Anthony Johnson look even more powerful now that he's not killing himself to cut down to welterweight? Or will Vitor Belfort's patented power punches put Johnson to sleep? Will any of the favored Brazilians lose in front of the fans in Rio?

I'll attempt to answer those questions and more as I predict the winners at UFC 142 below.

What: UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes

When: Saturday, the FX preliminary card begins at 8 p.m. ET and the main card begins on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.

Where: HSBC Arena, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Predictions on the five pay-per-view fights below.

José Aldo vs. Chad Mendes
The undefeated Mendes has talked in recent weeks about how he's sure he has the right game plan for Aldo, and about how he has the best wrestling credentials of anyone Aldo has ever fought, and he's coming into this fight with a lot of confidence. And if you look at the fight from a certain point of view, you can see where that confidence comes from: Mendes has, after all, used that superior wrestling to take decisions from some pretty good opponents, and even though this will be Mendes' first five-round fight, he may have a cardio edge over Aldo.

But that's my analysis when I'm trying to look for a reason to think Mendes could win. The hard truth for Mendes is that while he's a better wrestler than anyone Aldo has ever fought before, Aldo is a much, much, much better striker than anyone Mendes has ever fought before. Aldo has become more cautious and tentative in recent fights, and so I'm not expecting to see the kind of devastating knockout that the Aldo of 2008-2009 could be counted on to provide. But I am expecting Aldo to employ leg kicks to keep Mendes at distance, perhaps some knees when Mendes shoots for takedowns, and enough punches to bloody Mendes's face. This fight should be another good opportunity for Aldo to show that he's hands down the best featherweight in MMA.
Pick: Aldo

Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson
Johnson's decision to move up to middleweight is long overdue -- while fighting at welterweight he twice came in more than five pounds over. So will he look better now that he's fighting in a division where he can actually make weight comfortably? I think he will, but I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes because I see this fight as being more about Belfort's power than Johnson's.

Belfort has had five fights since moving down to middleweight in 2008, and in four of them he knocked his opponent cold with punches. In the fifth, he got knocked cold himself by Anderson Silva's front kick. Johnson certainly has the ability to land a head kick and knock Belfort out with it, but I see Belfort catching Johnson with his hands down and knocking him out.
Pick: Belfort

Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Massenzio
Massenzio is a good wrestler and a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, and he's coming off a solid win over Steve Cantwell at UFC 136. But he's not even close to Palhares' level on the ground, and I'll be surprised if this fight doesn't end with Palhares cranking on Massenzio's leg, and Massenzio tapping.
Pick: Palhares

Erick Silva vs. Carlo Prater
Silva made his UFC debut at the last Rio show and needed just 40 seconds to knock out Luis Ramos. Prater, who's finally making his UFC debut 40 fights into his MMA career, has a good chin and won't be knocked out as quickly as Ramos was. But Prater took this fight on short notice and really isn't on the same level as Silva, and it would be shocking if Silva doesn't win this fight handily.
Pick: Silva

Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim
Barboza has built up a 9-0 record without ever really being tested on the ground, and Etim has a very dangerous submission game (he's won the Submission of the Night bonus in each of his last three wins). So if he can get this fight to the ground, Etim may just be the first person to beat Barboza. But Barboza is such a lethal striker that I expect him to hurt Etim badly standing up.
Pick: Barboza

Jose Aldo Ready to Defend Title in Middle of Night

The UFC 142 pay-per-view will air in its usual 10 p.m. ET time slot in North America, which means the main card will only begin at 1 a.m. BRST local time in Rio de Janeiro.

That also means that by the time Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes step into the cage for their UFC featherweight title fight, it could be as late as 3:30 a.m. BRST. The unusual schedule shouldn't be too much of a problem for the challenger Mendes, who arrived in Brazil on Tuesday, and who trains out of Sacramento, Calif., where it will be approximately 9:30 p.m. PST by the time the fight gets underway.

It may affect the champion Aldo, who lives and trains in Brazil. However, Aldo quickly put those concerns to rest on a recent conference, saying he trained in the middle of the night to get his body ready to fight at that hour.

"It really doesn't make a difference," Aldo said through a translator. "You're always going to be training around the time that you're going to be fighting, so if you're fighting around noon, or be it midnight or three o'clock in the morning, it really doesn't make a difference.

"It all comes down to being well-trained and being prepared to step in there on fight night."

When the UFC last visited Brazil in August the time difference wasn't so great. But since North American clocks were turned back an hour in November, signaling the end of Daylight Savings time, and Brazilian clocks were turned forward an hour in anticipation of their summer season, it created a greater time difference between Brazil and North America.

Chad Mendes, Anthony Johnson Say Reception Has Been Warm at UFC 142

The UFC 142 fight card is designed to get the fans in Rio de Janeiro worked up to support the local guys, with eight fights featuring Brazilians against foreigners, including local fan favorites taking on American challengers in the main event and co-main event.

But those two Americans, Chad Mendes and Anthony Johnson, said on Thursday morning at the pre-fight press conference in Rio that they've had purely positive experiences from the Brazilian fans they've met, and they're being treated more like guests than rivals.

"Brazil has just been great," Johnson said. "The fans have been great. I'm speechless, really, about this country. I had heard good stories and bad stories about this country but so far all I've experienced is great things, so thank you, Brazil."

Mendes described the open workout on Wednesday in front of Brazilian fans on a Rio beach as one of the best experiences of his life, and he said that while he knows his opponent, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, will have a lot of fans in the HSBC Arena, he doesn't worry about what the fans might say.

"I'm probably going to get booed," Mendes said. "It's here in Jose's backyard and he's the champion. But other than boos, I can't speak Portugeuse so I can't understand what anyone's saying anyway. I'm going to be in the zone and ready to get in there and do what I do."

Mendes said being away from home hasn't diminished his confidence.

"I feel great," Mendes said. "I'm basically treating this like it's any other fight, whether it's in Brazil or it's in the United States. I have tunnel vision, I have that goal of winning that belt. That's something I've trained for and it's all I'm thinking about."

And Johnson said he views the opportunity to step into the Octagon with Belfort as a big step in his career.

"I'm looking forward to the fight," Johnson said. "I can't wait. I definitely can't wait."

Fighting in Brazil Again, Vitor Belfort Thrilled With How Far MMA Has Come

Vitor Belfort's first UFC fight came at what may have been the promotion's lowest moment. So he takes particular joy in seeing how far the UFC has come.

Belfort, who has been in the UFC longer than any other active fighter, is preparing to fight back home in Brazil on Saturday at UFC 142. But as he discussed the upcoming fight on Thursday, he also remembered his very first fight in the UFC, which came at a time when the entire sport of MMA was on the verge of collapse.

That would be UFC 12 on Feb. 7, 1997. At the age of 19, Belfort was an entrant in the four-man heavyweight tournament originally scheduled to take place that night in New York. But as politicians began to speak out against what they viewed as a savage bloodsport, the New York government told the UFC it was no longer welcome in its state, and the UFC had to scramble to move the event to Alabama at the last minute.

"My first fight, we had to travel all night to Alabama," Belfort said. "We could only fight in Alabama. It was my first UFC. And then after so much investment they were able to remove that stigma in the U.S. and we slowly won over different countries."

Winning over different countries included Brazil, where Belfort said it hasn't always been easy. Although MMA traces its origins to Brazil, the sport has also faced some of the same opposition there that it has faced in the United States. Belfort, who beat Wanderlei Silva at UFC Brazil in 1998 but hasn't fought back home since then, said it's been a struggle to get people back home to accept that mixed martial arts is a legitimate sporting competition, not a violent spectacle.

"We really had to be pioneers, here in Brazil especially," Belfort said.

Belfort said it used to frustrate him when people thought that because he fights professionally for a living, that meant he must also be a thug who gets involved in street fights. He said that in the early days of the UFC, people would ask him if anyone who ran into him in the street should fear him, not understanding that for him, fighting is just a job.

"I remember my first interview they asked me, 'If someone crashes into your car, what would you do?' I stopped and thought, 'If they crash into Pavarotti's car, does he have to sing an opera?' So people have prejudice against fighting," Belfort said.

Now the UFC has reached the point where it can sell thousands of tickets for a major event in Brazil, and Belfort says he believes Brazilians have come to understand what MMA is all about.

"The sport was born in this country and it's been difficult to gain acceptance, but we actually overcame this hurdle," Belfort said. "The sport has a lot to teach people. Martial arts is about physical and moral respect. . . . In martial arts we have this balance. So if someone crashes into my car I will come out of the car, get their license plate and talk about the damage and who has to pay. People relate our sport to aggression and it's not that at all. It's a contact sport but we respect each other greatly and we don't use it outside of the sport."

Belfort said that he's thrilled to see how many people across his home country are enjoying the UFC.

"Children, the elderly, families, women can understand our sport," Belfort said. "There's a lot for our sport to offer."

Anthony Johnson: My Strategy Is Called 'Get It Done'

Anthony Johnson's strategy (if you want to call it that) against Vitor Belfort is quite simple at UFC 142 this Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"I'm going in there to do me. And that's to fight," Johnson said Thursday during the UFC 142 pre-fight press conference. "There's no strategy. My strategy is to fight and that's what I get paid to do and that's what I'm here to do. So as far as strategy, it's called: get it done."

Johnson projected an air of confidence in front of reporters heading into his middleweight debut against the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

He spoke of gaining extra motivation after watching the "Countdown to UFC 142" preview show upon hearing Belfort say, "We're going to see a lion." Johnson was reminded of something his grandfather once told him.

"I'm looking forward to seeing that lion, actually," Johnson said. "Before my granddad died, a week before he died, he told me, 'Fight like you're fighting a lion across the cage from you.'

"That's all he had to tell me really before he passed," Johnson continued. "For me to not care and do the best I can in life. With Vitor saying that made me want to fight even more. I'm hungry too. I'm looking forward to the fight. I can't wait. I definitely can't wait.

Belfort (20-9) is known as one of the most devastating punchers in UFC history. He joined the UFC at UFC 12, stopping two opponents in one night. 15 years later, Belfort hasn't slowed down. He's coming off a KO finish against Yoshihiro Akiyama last August at UFC 133.

Johnson (10-3) is a knockout artist himself, having recorded five knockouts in his six UFC wins. His only losses inside the Octagon have been due to an injury and a pair of rear-naked chokes.

Last year Johnson made a switch to Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Fla. to train under Mike Van Arsdale with the likes of Rashad Evans and Jorge Santiago. From the look of things, the move has already paid off. Last October, Johnson ended Charlie Brenneman's night with a first-round head-kick knockout.

Training with a new camp and fighting at a new weight class, Johnson on Saturday will aim to establish himself against one of the future Hall of Famers in the sport.

"Vitor is an amazing athlete, very hands and very powerful. You have no choice but to respect him. I respect him but I'm not afraid of him. I'm willing to accept the challenge."

When It Comes to Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo, Outside Opinions Make Tempers Flare

This is how easy these things start in the fight business. These minor beefs. These subtle slights that fighters carry with them like childhood insults that are still fresh in their minds decades later. Once I started talking to the various parties involved in the UFC 142 main event for a Sports Illustrated article this week, I heard about it from all of them. Once they start, these things take on a life of their own.

It was a sincere opinion, Maynard said, so when people asked him what he thought of the upcoming fight, that's what he told them: Mendes isn't ready. Not surprisingly, this didn't please Mendes when he heard it.

"Honestly, I don't know why Gray's even talking about me," he said. "Gray's never trained with me. He has no idea what I feel like in there. Obviously, he's training with Jose, so if he gets asked that question I guess that's what he thinks he's got to say, but honestly, Gray's style of wrestling is completely different from mine. I'm more of an explosive, blast you off your feet kind of wrestler. He's more like a bully that just gets you up against the cage and works takedowns and slams from there."

Mendes' training partner and mentor, Urijah Faber, was even more direct.

"Since when are the two best guys in the weight class not ready to fight each other? That's an absurd thing to say. But whatever. Who cares what [Maynard] thinks? Chad's going to go in there and fight and win."

But now that Maynard's taken some heat from the Team Alpha Male crew for his comments, he's not at all ready to back away from them. If anything, he's only more committed to his original assessment, he said, because now he knows just how good Aldo is.

"From watching the tapes, that's how I felt, that [Mendes] wasn't ready. But actually training with Jose, I feel it even more now," Maynard said. "For me, helping out Jose doesn't mean I want Chad to lose or I came here to make that happen. It's just a matter of helping out Jose, and now that I've been here, that's what I think is going to happen. I only know Chad a little bit, and I think he's a tough kid, but Jose is really tough. I couldn't believe it. I was seriously impressed. ...I knew he could strike. I knew that. What I didn't know is, man, he's tough to take down. And the kind of athlete he is, the way he applies that, it's amazing. He can take a punch, too."

But as fight night approaches, these outside opinions tend to diminish in importance. Soon enough it'll be just Mendes and Aldo in the cage, and then it won't matter what anyone else says. When it gets to that point, however, Mendes has something that Aldo doesn't, which is the benefit of a former opponent's experience. Faber went five brutal rounds with Aldo, and learned some hard lessons that he's passed on to his protege, he said.

For instance, there's the issue of Aldo's leg kicks.

"The one thing I didn't take into account was, I knew the leg kicks were going to hurt, but I didn't know how disarming they would be," Faber said. "As far as leg kicks in practice, when your legs gets kicked a couple times and it starts to hurt, you don't keep wanting to get kicked in it all day. You heal it up and put ice on it so you can train the next day. But in a fight like that, you have to know that kicks like that will do damage and you have to honor that. You can't just tell yourself that you're going to take the pain and do what you want to do. You have to avoid them and make him pay when he tries it."

Aldo shredded Faber's thighs with kicks early on, effectively taking away Faber's ability to shoot for a takedown in the later rounds. He took criticism for it after the fight, but even Mendes can't say it was unwarranted.

"That's something even Urijah talked about," he said. "He doesn't have that explosive shot the way I do. A lot of his takedowns come off of punches, using that snap single-leg or something. Aldo took that away from him with those leg kicks, and by that point it was too late."

And that -- the fact that not all wrestlers and/or wrestling styles are created equal -- is why Mendes doesn't worry about Maynard's assessment of him or Maynard's training with Aldo, he said. There are wrestlers and then there are wrestlers, and just because you've seen one in the gym doesn't mean you know what it's like to fight another in the cage on Saturday night.

"We don't know how much [Maynard's work with Aldo] is going to help him, but we'll get in there and see," Mendes said. "It doesn't matter to me. I've been wrestling since I was five years old, and I've never taken a year off. It's something I've done my whole life. For him to bring a wrestler in to work with for one camp, his wrestling's not going to be anywhere near mine."

With Mendes' predictions, just as with Maynard's and Faber's, we'll know soon enough who had it right.
How this story starts is, Gray Maynard gets to know Jose Aldo at UFC 136 and they get to talking. Maynard likes him. More than he expected to, really, since it turns out "he's actually a really humble guy." Since Maynard has already left his longtime home at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas by this point, he figures maybe it's time to do some traveling, learn some new stuff. Spending the winter in Brazil (where it's summer) working out with Aldo and the Nova Unaio team sounds fun, right?

"So I contacted [Aldo's manager] Ed Soares, just kind of threw it out there," Maynard said. "I didn't know if they'd take me up on it, but a couple days later [Soares] called me back and said he'd love to have me down there. A couple days later I was on a flight, basically put everything on hold and flew down there."

So far, so good. But as long as he was going to be helping Aldo prepare for fellow wrestler Chad Mendes, Maynard figured he might as well take a look at some fight footage of Mendes on his long flight to South America. Here's where it gets tricky.

"The first time I trained with Jose, I told the guy, 'Hey, on the flight down here the tapes I watched [on Mendes], you seem a little more comfortable in the Octagon. I don't know if he's quite ready,'" Maynard said. "It's not a knock on him. He's the top guy to [challenge for the title]. It's just that Jose's on top of his game."

Vitor Belfort Eyes the Coming End to His Time in the Cage, Vows to 'Enjoy the Moment'

When I asked Vitor Belfort what he thought it would feel like to walk out in front of a screaming crowd of his countrymen in Rio's HSBC Arena for UFC 142 in the wee hours of Sunday morning, he described it in one word: intense.

"I do my best no matter where I'm at, but I know that crowd's going to be the loudest crowd ever," Belfort said. "I'm going to enjoy the moment. It's a party every time I step in that Octagon. It's party time. The hard work is done and it's time to do what you do every day in the gym. Of course, you have only one chance, so you have to enjoy the moment."

And yet I admit that, based on what I've learned of fighterspeak over the years, something in that statement set off alarms in my head. Not only did Belfort say he was going to 'enjoy the moment' twice in the span of about six sentences, he went on to use that exact same phrase at least half a dozen more times in the less than ten minutes we spent on the phone.

For a normal person, maybe that means nothing. But a fighter? In my experience, once they stop talking about their obsessive desire to win and perform and become a champion, and they start talking about enjoying each passing moment of fight week, it usually means they're thinking about hanging it up soon. It made me wonder: is Vitor Belfort closing in on retirement? Is that even possible?

Belfort is a little like the anti-Wanderlei Silva in some ways. With Silva, you think about his long, memorable career and look at his weathered face -- even after plastic surgery, it remains a rugged timeline of his experiences in the fight game -- and you can't believe he's only 35 years old. Then you look at Belfort, who still looks fresh and eager and in possession of roughly the same facial symmetry he started with, and it's hard to believe he's actually 34.

At the same time, it makes sense. They came up more or less as contemporaries. When they faced off at UFC Brazil in 1998, they were both 5-1 as professionals. But in the intervening years it seems like Silva's lived several brutal lifetimes, while Belfort's best days have seemed always just in front of him, like a hill he never quite seems to crest.

When I spoke to him in the Copacabana Palace Hotel the last time the UFC was in Rio, he was fresh off a knockout of Yoshihiro Akiyama and all he could talk about was getting another shot at middleweight champ Anderson Silva. When I mentioned that it might be tough to do, considering how recently he'd been beaten by the champ, he just shook his head intently as his young son hammered one overhand right after another into his father's gut in an attempt to get the old man's attention.

"I'll do it," Belfort said confidently. "I'll do whatever I have to do."

But this time, just a couple days away from a fight with Anthony Johnson, which -- win or lose -- will lead him straight into an Ultimate Fighter coaching gig opposite his old friend Wanderlei, Belfort struck a very different tone.

"I'm enjoying the moment," he said again. "I'm enjoying every time I can enjoy, all of this. Right now I'm enjoying everything as it comes."

Maybe it's the weight-cut talking. Maybe it's too many phone interviews lined up back to back to back to back. Maybe it's just something he says when he's not sure what else to say. But when I put it to Belfort straight and asked him if all this 'enjoy the moment' talk meant he was looking at his career and wondering how many such moments were left in it, he didn't shoot me down. Far from it.

"I want to finish strong," he said. "I want to finish the best I can finish. We'll see when God's going to decide to speak to my heart and tell me that it's the moment to finish. I know that the time is coming, so I'm preparing to finish the best I can finish."

At first, it still seems hard to believe. When you think of the guys who might need to hang it up soon, Belfort's name doesn't spring to mind. He still looks good in the cage, can still take and deliver a punch with the best of them. But the years are the years and the numbers are the numbers. The bout with Johnson will be his 30th professional MMA fight in a more than fifteen-year career. Almost all of that time has been spent at the sport's highest level, against top-tier opponents. Surely, that takes its toll whether we see it etched into a man's face or not.

But when you're still as competitive as he is is well into your mid-thirties, I asked him, how do you know when it's time?

"God will speak to my heart," Belfort answered. "I will feel the moment. I don't have any ego or pride. In life, you have to understand that everything has a beginning, middle, and end. The only thing that doesn't have an end is God's presence, and God Himself. He's the only thing that doesn't have an end. ...That time will come and I will feel it. And when it comes, I'm going to accept it."

For those of us who were teenagers ourselves back when Belfort got his start as the blistering 19-year-old who knocked people out in a matter of seconds -- back when he was "The Phenom," who eventually gave way to the talented, but not quite dominant middle-aged fighter -- it's strange to think that he must now be closer to the end than the beginning.

But then, that time comes for every fighter. The time when you start actively trying to enjoy these fleeting moments as a pro fighter because you realize there's only a finite number of them left.

UFC 142: Dana White Blasts 'Unprofessional' Anthony Johnson for Missing Weight

When Anthony Johnson moved up from welterweight to middleweight for his UFC 142 fight with Vitor Belfort, it just seemed like common sense: Johnson had struggled mightily to make the 170-pound welterweight limit, and so the 185-pound middleweight class was a much better home for him.

But there's just one problem: Johnson can't make weight at middleweight, either. Johnson came in at 197 pounds.

Just before the UFC 142 weigh-ins on Friday in Rio de Janeiro, UFC President Dana White announced that Johnson is over the 185-pound limit and won't be able to get down, and so the fight is in jeopardy, although Belfort is expected to agree to fight Johnson anyway.

"Rumble Johnson is not on weight today. And when I say he's not on weight he's way off weight," White said.

So the UFC has essentially decided to turn this into a light heavyweight bout, but with an added condition: They'll have a second weigh-in on Saturday at which Johnson will have to make it under the light heavyweight limit of 205 pounds again. If Johnson can't make weight then, the fight is off.

The stipulation is, Vitor does not want him to weigh more than 205 pounds by tomorrow at like 2 o'clock in the afternoon," White said. "So we'll see how this thing plays out. He'll weigh in today and have to weigh in tomorrow."

White made it clear that he's not happy with Johnson.

"As a fighter, you are a professional. You are contracted to come in at a certain weight. This is not the first time this has happened with Johnson. He moved up to 185 pounds so this wouldn't happen to him at 170 pounds, and here we are in the same position again. [Belfort] came in like a professional on weight, and Anthony Johnson comes in as a total unprofessional, way overweight."

White appeared angry enough on Friday that this might be Johnson's final fight in the UFC in any weight class.

Lijkt me zeer ongezond inderdaad.

MMAProfessor

Anthony Johnson Weighs In at 204.2, Vitor Belfort Fight Is On at UFC 142

Anthony Johnson vs. Vitor Belfort is on at UFC 142.

Johnson, who weighed in at an absurd 197 pounds on Friday, showed up to his unusual second weigh-in on Saturday at 204.2 pounds -- way over the contracted weight of 186 pounds, but low enough that Belfort is willing to take the fight. Belfort, who came in at 186 pounds on Friday, had said he would refuse to fight Johnson if Johnson couldn't weigh in below 205 pounds on fight day.

UFC President Dana White was furious at Johnson for missing weight, but Johnson didn't seem to care. Johnson posted a statement on his Facebook page saying he's "laughing at" the people who have criticized him and adding, "I don't give a f--k." Johnson claims he has a medical issue that required him to get intravenous fluids, and that's why he couldn't cut weight on Friday.

But while Johnson may not care, it's clear that White does. If Johnson loses to Belfort on Saturday night, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see the UFC release him.

So the fight is a must-win situation for Johnson in a hostile environment against Belfort, who's one of the most popular fighters in Brazil. But at least the fight is on: Johnson is overweight, but he's close enough that Belfort is willing to fight him.

Vitor Belfort Expected to Weigh Approximately 205 Pounds Come UFC 142

So just how much of a size advantage will Anthony Johnson have over Vitor Belfort Saturday night at UFC 142?

Well, we already know that "Rumble" weighed 204.2 pounds this morning, hours after missing the middleweight mark Friday afternoon when he weighed 197 at the weigh-ins. Belfort's highly-regarded nutritionist and trainer Mike Dolce told MMAFighting.com Saturday morning from Brazil that Belfort weighed 205 pounds at 9:15 p.m. local time Friday night, and he believes "The Phenom" will be around that weight by the time he steps into the cage Saturday night.

"He may get up to 208 with a full belly," Dolce said, "but we'll pull back his food a bit as he gets closer to competition time. [He'll] probably be 204 tonight."

Dolce said he believes Johnson will "probably be over 220 pounds" come fight time, but despite the expected weight discrepancy, Belfort never considered turning down the fight.

"We wanted the fight regardless," Dolce said.

According to Johnson's manager Glenn Robinson, "Rumble" was en route to making weight until he fell ill Friday morning and needed fluids to get better. However, Dolce isn't buying that excuse.

"Every fighter is 'ill' on weigh-in day. He was bouncing around giving high-five's in the pre-weigh-in line-up, laughing and looking fine," Dolce said. "Missing weight is an issue of a weak mind, not body. I have seen thousands of cuts. If an athlete misses it is because he did not prepare properly or he breaks mentally."

And while the scales will show that Johnson will enter the cage with a size advantage, Dolce doesn't believe the deck has been stacked against his client Belfort.

"Belfort had the advantage the day the fight was signed. Johnson endured no more trauma than Vitor did. Or, any other MMA athlete. I don't care what the stories say, all these guys suffer exactly the same and endure the same pain. Either you are prepared or you aren't. Vitor is prepared."
