A pair of featherweight bouts have been booked for the Dec. 31 "How Are You?" event (this year's Dynamite!! equivalent) with Tatsuya Kawajiri (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tatsuya/kawajiri/750/) squaring off against Kazuyuki Miyata (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kazuyuki/miyata/885/) and Hiroyuki Takaya (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/hiroyuki/takaya/929/) defending his belt against Takeshi "Lion" Inoue in Saitama, Japan.

DREAM executive producer Keiichi Sasahara announced the bouts (http://dreamofficial.com/free/news/detail.php?id=1321535311) Thursday at a press conference in Tokyo.

Kawajlri (29-7-2) fought in two of the three DREAM events in 2011, beating Drew Fickett (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/drew/fickett/392/) and Joachim Hansen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/joachim/hansen/731/). In April, Kawajiri challenged Gilbert Melendez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/gilbert/melendez/778/) for the Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/) lightweight belt and lost by first-round TKO. In his most recent fight against Hansen in September, Kawajiri made the drop to featherweight. Miyata (11-8) fought once this year in a losing effort against Takaya with the DREAM title on the line.

Takaya (16-9-1), who won the DREAM title last New Year's Eve, returned to the U.S. in April for Strikeforce and lost on the undercard to now-UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) fighter Robert Peralta (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/robert/peralta/1791/). Takaya then bounced back in July with the aforementioned win over Miyata. Inoue (21-5) won all three of his fights this year against Taiki Tsuchiya, Koichiro Matsumoto (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/koichiro/matsumoto/1803/) and Caol Uno.

The full card will be a mixture of MMA, kickboxing and pro wrestling matches and will air on HDNet.

DREAM Bantamweight Semifinals Set for 'Genki Desu Ka!!'

To close out DREAM's World Bantamweight Grand Prix, Bibiano Fernandes (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/bibiano/fernandes/921/) will face Antonio Banuelos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio/banuelos/1035/), while Masakazu Imanari (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/masakazu/imanari/740/) will fight Rodolfo Marques (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/RodolfoMarques/) on the Dec. 31 "Genki Desu Ka!!" (How are you?) card in Saitama, Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/).

Fernandes, Baneulos, Imanari and Marques were all victorious in opening round bouts at DREAM.17 in September to advance to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals will meet the same night on Dec. 31 to determine the Grand Prix champion.

Former DREAM Featherweight GP winner and titleholder Fernandes (9-3) is coming off a win against Takafumi Otsuka via rear-naked choke. Marques (14-1) out of Brazil's Nova Uniao advanced with a unanimous decision win over Yusup Saadulaev.

Leglock specialist Imanari (24-9-2) has been one of the most active fighters in Japanese MMA in 2011. He's 3-2 this year with wins over Abel Cullum, Kenji Osawa and Keisuke Fujiwara and loses to Hideo Tokoro and Hiroshi Nakamura. Banuelos (19-7) made his UFC debut in February in a losing effort against Miguel Torres and then bounced back with a win over Hideo Tokoro at DREAM.17.

Event promoters also announced Friday the addition of Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/HayatoMachSakurai/) vs. Ryo Chonan (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ryo/chonan/285/) to the card.

Sakurai (35-12-2) will be in search of his first win since knocking out Shinya Aoki back at DREAM.8 in April 2009. The former UFC title contender last competed last New Year's Eve in a loss to Jason High. He was booked to fight at DREAM.17 but bowed out due to injury. Chonan (20-12), best known for a submission win over Anderson Silva, won both his fights in 2011 fighting under the DEEP banner.

The final "Genki Desu Ka!!" card will be a mix of MMA, kickboxing and pro wrestling matches.

Current lineup:

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Rodolfo Marques
Masakazu Imanari vs. Antonio Banuelos
Winner of Fernandes-Marques vs. Winner of Imanari-Banuelos
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai vs. Ryo Chonan
Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Takeshi "Lion" Inoue

Ishii ready for Fedor on New Year’s Eve *VIDEO*

Olympic Judo gold-medalist Satoshi Ishii (4-1-1) will take a big step up in MMA competition next month when he faces heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko (32-4-1) at DREAM’s New Year’s Eve show in Saitama, Japan.

MMA reporter extraordinaire Aaron Tru caught up with the Japanese fighter at Reign Training Center in Southern California this week to talk about the fight.

Without an interpreter the language barrier made it difficult, but a few things are evident: Ishii has been concentrating heavily on his striking, he will be ready for Fedor at DREAM and his ultimate goal is to become UFC champion one day and feels this fight is a very important step toward that goal (Yes, Ishii wants to use Fedor as a stepping stone).

Aoki vs. Kitaoka, Tokoro vs. Saadulaev Added to 'Genki Desu Ka!!'

A lightweight title bout between Shinya Aoki (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shinya/aoki/676/) and Satoru Kitaoka (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/SatoruKitaoka/) and a bantamweight reserve bout between Hideo Tokoro (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/hideo/tokoro/908/) and Yusup Saadulaev (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/YusupSaadulaev/) are recent additions to the New Year's Eve "Genki Desu Ka!!" event at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/).

DREAM last weekend made official that Aoki will be defending his DREAM belt against former teammate Kitaoka in a five-round affair. On Tuesday, Tokoro and Saadulaev, who were both ousted in quarterfinal bouts in September, were given a second chance at returning to the tournament. The reserve winner could potentially enter the finals in the event an injury replacement is needed.

Aoki (29-5), who will be fighting for the fourth time in 2011, is looking to extend his win streak to seven as well as a successful second title defense. Aoki last fought in September, submitting "Razor" Rob McCullough (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rob/mccullough/962/) with a neck crank at DREAM.17. Kitaoka (29-10-9) is a former Sengoku lightweight champion who made his DREAM debut in September, beating Willamy Freire (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/willamy/freire/1556/) by split decision.

Tokoro (30-24-1) had a four-fight win streak snapped by Antonio Banuelos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio/banuelos/1035/) at DREAM.17. Meanwhile, Saadulaev suffered his first career loss in a unanimous decision loss to Rodolfo Marques.

The current "Genki Desu Ka!!" lineup is below.

Dream Lightweight Title Bout
Shinya Aoki (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shinya/aoki/676/) vs. Satoru Kitaoka

Yuichiro 'Jienotsu' Nagashima Set for Mixed Rules Bout at 'Genki Desu Ka!!'

Yuichiro "Jienotsu" Nagashima (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/YuichiroJienotsuNagashima/), who knocked out Shinya Aoki (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shinya/aoki/676/) last New Year's Eve in a kickboxing/MMA fight, will fight again under the mixed rules format on Dec. 31 at "Genki Desu Ka!!" taking place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/).

Nagashima, a K-1 MAX fighter known for engaging in school girl cosplay, has been booked to face former DEEP lightweight champion and DREAM veteran Katsunori Kikuno (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/katsunori/kikuno/941/). In this special attraction, one round will be under K-1 kickboxing rules and the other under DREAM mixed martial arts rules.

Nagashima, who fought MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) in 2005-2006 before making the jump full-time to K-1 in 2007, recently made clear his interest in returning to MMA. Following a UFC 137 pre-fight press conference in October, Nagashima introduced himself to UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White and asked for an opportunity inside the UFC cage (http://youtu.be/e2qyrvGZAJ4).

At Dynamite!! 2010, Nagashima caught the attention of Japanese MMA fans by scoring a second-round KO over Aoki. And he did so in the MMA round of the fight with a knee four seconds in. Unlike last year, Nagashima will be fighting an MMA fighter who prefers to keep the fight on the feet. Kikuno carries one of the more unusual fighting stances in MMA with his emphasis in Kyokushin Karate. Kikuno also has a judo background but his strength in MMA has been in the standup department. Nine out of his 16 wins have come by way of (T)KO.

The current "Genki Desu Ka!!" lineup is below.

Dream Lightweight Title Bout
Shinya Aoki vs. Satoru Kitaoka

Dream Featherweight Title Bout
Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Takeshi "Lion" Inoue

Dream Bantamweight World GP
Semifinals: Bibiano Fernandes vs. Rodolfo Marques

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Satoshi Ishii Signed for New Year's Eve Event in Japan

Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) will face former Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/satoshi/ishii/1178/) on a New Year's Eve event co-promoted by M-1 Global and DREAM in Saitama, Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/).

The promotions confirmed the fight's booking in a joint news release on Monday afternoon.

It will be the first time Emelianenko fights in Japan in exactly four years, since defeating Hong-Man Choi (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/hong-man/choi/938/). That fight led to his arrival in the US and Affliction before he eventually moved on to Strikeforce.

Emelianenko (32-4, 1 no contest) recently snapped a three-fight win streak by defeating Jeff Monson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jeff/monson/141/) in a unanimous decision at an M-1 event in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The fight with Ishii had been rumored for some time, but for a time it wasn't expected to happen until officials pulled it together during the past week.

Ishii will be at a severe experience disadvantage, having fought just six times in his career. He's 4-1-1 overall, and most recently fought at a independent show in Brazil where he fought to a draw with former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/paulo/filho/710/). In 2008, Ishii captured an Olympic judo gold medal in the 100+ kilogram weight class.

The New Year's Eve event -- titled Fight For Japan: Genki Desu Ka Omisoko 2011 -- will take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan and air on HDNet.

Among the other fights officially confirmed are a lightweight bout between Shinya Aoki (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shinya/aoki/676/) and Satoru Kitaoka, and a featherweight bout pitting Tatsuya Kawajiri (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tatsuya/kawajiri/750/) and Kazuyuki Miyata (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kazuyuki/miyata/885/).

On New Year's Eve, Fedor Emelianenko is scheduled to compete against former Judo Olympian Satoshi Ishii for Dream. The bout will be the second in six weeks for the Russian heavyweight, who had previously dropped three in a row under the Strikeforce banner.
Emelianenko recently defeated American wrestler Jeff Monson, at an M-1 event in Russia. Fedor won a decision, but broke Monson's femur in the process. Ishii is only 4-1 in mixed martial arts and most recently fought former WEC champion Paulo Filho to a draw in a September bout in Brazil.

Kazushi Sakuaba Returns to Pro Wrestling on New Year's Eve

Kazushi Sakuraba (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/kazushi/sakuraba/110/) is set to participate on the New Year's Eve "Genki Desu Ka!!" card in Saitama, Japan -- as a pro wrestler.

Sakuraba, who made a name for himself in the mid-to-late 90s as a pro wrestler shortly before becoming a Japanese MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) superstar under the PRIDE banner, will partner with Laughter7 teammate Katsuyori Shibata (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/katsuyori/shibata/903/) against Shinichi Suzukawa and Atsushi Sawada in a tag team pro wrestling match.

A familiar face on New Year's Eve, Sakuraba has competed in MMA bouts on six of the last eight New Year's Eves. Sakuraba, 42, has lost his last four bouts and hasn't recorded a victory since his win over Zelg Galesic at Dream.12 in October 2009. Better known for his accomplishments as a pro wrestler, Shibata holds an unspectacular 4-11-1 MMA record.

Back on the MMA front, the promoters recently announced a women's MMA bout with Megumi Fujii taking on Karla Benitez. Fujii (24-1) has won her last two fights to bounce back from a split decision loss to Zoila Gurgel in the finals of the Bellator 115-pound women's tournament in October 2010. Benitez (6-1) fights out of Spain and is coming off the first loss of her career.

Ishii, Monson Fights Represent the Last Phase of Fedor's Career

The best heavyweight in MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) history will make his return to the ring on New Year's Eve in Japan (http://www.mmafighting.com/japan/), when Fedor Emelianenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fedor/emelianenko/705/) faces the former Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/satoshi/ishii/1178/), and the fan reaction to that fight has been decidedly mixed.

On one hand, you have fans who loved seeing Fedor's glory days in Pride who figure that there's nothing wrong with seeing him back in Japan on New Year's Eve, which was once an annual tradition. On the other hand, you have fans who are disappointed that Fedor won't be facing a high-level opponent, as Ishii is just 4-1-1 in his MMA career and doesn't have anything close to the kind of MMA resume that Fedor has.

The reality is that this fight -- and Fedor's fight in Moscow last month against Jeff Monson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jeff/monson/141/) -- is just what we're going to see from the 35-year-old Fedor at this point, as he enters the last phase of his legendary career. We're not going to see Fedor against Top 10 competition anymore, so we might as well enjoy watching him against the competition he will face, guys like Ishii and Monson who are perfectly respectable but far from elite.

Before I go any further, there's a little revisionist history to get out of the way: Some people like to claim that Fedor never fought high-quality competition, that all he did was "crush cans" in Japan. That's really not an accurate account of any stage of Fedor's career: He beat good opponents like Babalu Sobral and Ricardo Arona (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ricardo/arona/678/) in Rings early in his career, beat good opponents like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/antonio-rodrigo/nogueira/272/) and Mirko Cro Cop in Pride in the prime of his career, and beat good opponents like Tim Sylvia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/tim/sylvia/264/) and Andrei Arlovski (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/andrei/arlovski/367/) in Affliction late in his career. It's true that Fedor liked to mix in easy fights against the likes of Lee Hasdell and Yuji Nagata (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yuji/nagata/1013/), but at his best he took on many of the best heavyweights in the world and beat them consistently.

What has changed is simple: Fedor is not at his best anymore, and now he's not in a position to fight the best heavyweights anymore. The sport's top heavyweights are signed to exclusive Zuffa contracts, and so they're not going to be fighting Fedor any time soon.

And really, Fedor shouldn't be fighting an elite heavyweight right now. After consecutive losses to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva and Dan Henderson, taking a step back in quality of competition only made sense for Fedor, because he can't compete with the truly elite in the sport anymore. That's not a knock on Fedor, any more than it's a knock on Michael Jordan to say that he wasn't as good with the Washington Wizards as he was with the Chicago Bulls. It's just the reality with aging athletes.

The good news about the Ishii fight is that while Fedor is a heavy favorite, it's not a mismatch to the same extent that Fedor's last New Year's Eve fight was. In that fight, on December 31, 2007, Fedor was still the No. 1 heavyweight in the world, and seeing him easily submit the Korean giant Hong Man Choi in a Japanese freak show felt like a waste of time. Ishii isn't on Fedor's level, but Fedor-Ishii in 2011 is a more competitive fight than Fedor-Choi in 2007 was.

The other piece of good news is that this will be Fedor's fourth fight this year, making 2011 the most active year for Fedor since 2004, when he was the heavyweight champion in Pride. If you're a Fedor fan, seeing him fight frequently is not a bad thing.

So that's where Fedor is at this late stage in his career. He's no longer fighting the best of the best on the biggest stages in the sport, but if you've enjoyed watching him fight, there are worse things than seeing him in the ring with Ishii on New Year's Eve.

'DREAM: New Year! 2011' weigh-in results: Headliners, champs on weight
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Dec 30, 2011 at 8:15 am ET
The headliners and title-fight participants competing at Saturday's "DREAM: New Year! 2011" event successfully have made weight for the show.

Weigh-ins for the event, officially dubbed "Genki Desu Ka!!," took place today in Tokyo.

Saturday's event, which airs live on HDNet in the early-morning hours (1 a.m. ET/10 p.m. PT), takes place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The show, which is held in conjunction with IGF, features an array of combat-sports offerings, including two MMA title fights, an MMA-tournament conclusion, four pro-wrestling bouts, two kickboxing matches, and a mixed-rules bout.

Headlining the show is a heavyweight bout between former PRIDE champ and recent Strikeforce fighter Fedor Emelianenko, who's competed in many big year-end shows in Japan. The famed Russian, who recently snapped a three-fight losing streak with a victory over veteran Jeff Monson, weighed 233.2 pounds while opponent Satoshi Ishii, an Olympic gold-medal judoka, weighed 214.3 pounds.

Lightweight champ Shinya Aoki and challenger Satoru Kitaoka both weighed 154 pounds for their title fight, and featherweight titleholder Hiroyuki Takaya weighed 143 pounds while challenger Takeshi "Lion" Inoue weighed 142.6.

Three of the four fighters competing in the night's world bantamweight grand-prix semifinals and finals also made weight. Rodolfo Marques Diniz came in a bit heavy (136.8 pounds) on his initial attempt.

The full weigh-in results (for MMA bouts only) included:
Fedor Emelianenko (106 kilograms/233.2 pounds) vs. Satoshi Ishii (97.4/214.3)
Ryo Chonan (75.5/166.1) vs. Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (75.8/166.8)
Champ Shinya Aoki (70/154) vs. Satoru Kitaoka (70/154)
Champ Hiroyuki Takaya (65/143) vs. Takeshi "Lion" Inoue (64.8/142.6)
Tatsuya Kawajiri (65/143) vs. Kazuyuki Miyata (64.7/142.3)
Rodolfo Marques Diniz (62.2/136.8) vs. Bibiano Fernandes (61/134.2) - bantamweight grand-prix semifinal
Antonio Banuelos (61/134.2) vs. Masakazu Imanari (60.8/133.8) - bantamweight grand-prix semifinal
Hideo Tokoro (61/134.2) vs. Yusup Saadulaev (61.6/135.5) - bantamweight grand-prix reserve match
Karla Benitez (52/114.4) vs. Megumi Fujii (52/114.4)

fedor is 5 lbs afgevallen ten opzichten van zijn gevecht met Monson, hopelijk gaat hij proberen de 205 te halen!
