The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s second outing on FOX will land in Chicago, UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White confirmed to MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting on Thursday.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/11/17/dana-white-talks-ufc-139-fox-ratings-and-fox-2-main-card/) White said that the event will take place on January 28. Although he didn't specify the venue, it is expected to take place at the United Center.

White said he is expecting to put together a four-fight main card, and has several fights in mind, but would not divulge any details until speaking with his FOX partners on Monday. He said that he is not expecting to include a championship fight on the card.

The event will mark the UFC's first time in Illinois since UFC 90 in October 2008.

The addition means that the promotion will produce four events in four weeks spanning from January 14 to February 4. In addition to the UFC on FOX show, the stretch includes UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, UFC on FX in Nashville, and UFC 143 in Las Vegas.

The UFC's first foray on to network television was last Saturday, with an event that drew an average of 5.7 million viewers and a peak of 8.8 million to watch Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) knock out Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/) to capture the heavyweight championship.

Phill davis vs Rashad Evans opnieuw proberen misschien?

The card for UFC on FOX 2 set for January 28th is starting to come together. MMAInteviews first reported (http://mmainterviews.tv/2011/11/22/munoz-vs-sonnen-likely-to-headline-ufc-on-fox-2-on-january-28th/) and Fight Cove was able to independently confirm, former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen will take on Mark Munoz for the right to face middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the headliner of the promotions second network TV event.

In another feature bout, top welterweight contenders Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez will to square off in a fight that could give the winner a UFC title shot.

Sonnen (26-11-1) last fought at UFC 136 in October, defeating Brian Stann by submission in the second round. It was Sonnen’s first fight after over one year away from the octagon due to suspension. It appears he will opt to stay active instead of waiting to fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who is likely sidelined until mid-2012 due to injury (http://mmaweekly.com/anderson-silva-likely-sidelined-until-mid-2012). Munoz (12-2) scored the biggest victory of his career at UFC 138 earlier this month, stopping Chris Leben with a second round TKO. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” respectfully requested an opportunity to fight for the UFC middleweight championship after he defeated Leben, but it seems he will have to get through Sonnen first.
It is unknown at this time if the fight between Sonnen and Munoz will be three or five round fight.
Ellenberger (26-5) has won five straight UFC fights, most recently becoming only the second man to finish former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields. The Nebraska born fighter holds a 5-1 UFC record and looks to make a case to fight for the welterweight championship against Sanchez.
Sanchez (23-4) was scheduled to face Matt Hughes at UFC 135, but a broken hand suffered three weeks before the fight forced Sanchez to withdraw. Sanchez is on a two-fight win streak, having defeated Martin Kampmann by unanimous decision in his last outing. Healthy and ready to pick up where he left off, Sanchez will bring his relentless style to the octagon once again.

Ik voel een cut voor Einemo aankomen. Echt no way dat hij van Russow wint.

Shortly after losing in his UFC debut in a bout that won Fight of the Night at UFC 131, John Olav Einemo was surprisingly cut from the UFC. As it turned out, Einemo was part of the fallout from an ongoing business issue between his Golden Glory management team and the UFC.

Now, it appears a resolution has been struck, as Einemo is back with the promotion and will take on Mike Russow as part of the upcoming UFC on FOX 2 card on January 28, MMA Fighting has learned.

Sources confirmed that both sides have verbally agreed to the bout.

Einemo (6-2) faced Dave Herman at UFC 131, and engaged in a hard-fought battle before falling in a second-round TKO. The fight had been his first MMA bout in over four years. But even after the spirited scrap, he was one of several Golden Glory fighters -- including Alistair Overeem and Marloes Coenen to be dropped by Zuffa.

UFC president Dana White later said the issue stemmed from Golden Glory's management practice of having promoters pay them directly instead of the fighters.

"We don't work that way," White said then. "It's not the way we do business. It's not how it works in the United States with the athletic commissions. You don't pay the managers and the managers pay the fighters. You pay the fighters and the fighters pay the managers."

It remains unclear how the issue was resolved, and whether Einemo -- like Overeem -- parted ways with Golden Glory or found a way to work within the UFC framework.

Meanwhile, Russow (14-1, 1 no contest) will be hoping to extend his impressive 10-fight win streak. In his most recent fight, Russow stopped Jon Madsen by TKO in the second round of their March 2011 encounter.

UFC on FOX 2 will take place from the United Center in Chicago.

De fightcard wordt beter en beter!

http://cdn3.sbnation.com/entry_photo_images/2366379/method_get_s_jon-jones-05-12-11-8-24-27-638_large_large.jpg

Let's try this one again ... but on a much bigger stage.

Light heavyweight contenders Rashad Evans (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122510/rashad-evans) and Phil Davis (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122509/phil-davis) have been re-booked to square off as the headlining fight of the UFC on Fox 2 (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/92421/ufc-on-fox-2) event scheduled for Jan. 28, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois.ESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/mma/story/_/id/7297120/light-heavyweights-rashad-evans-phil-davis-fight-ufc-fox-2-sources-say) brought word of the pending match-up a short while ago.

The first time these two were matched up was back in August for a fight at UFC 133 (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/74507/ufc-133-evans-vs-ortiz) in Philadelphia. That is until Davis injured his knee and Tito Ortiz (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122519/tito-ortiz) stepped in on short notice. Evans ended up scoring a technical knockout win in the ensuing fight.
That victory earned him a title shot against Jon Jones (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122514/jon-jones), who defeated Quinton Jackson (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122513/quinton-jackson) to set up what promised to be the most heavily hyped fight of the year.
Then, of course, it all unraveled ... again.

http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg
As it turned out, Evans hurt his thumb during his win over Ortiz and this forced the UFC to once again make a difficult decision. It could keep it's budding superstar light heavyweight champion on the sidelines until "Suga" got healthy or book him for a bout while Rashad healed up.
Which is exactly what they did.

But if Jones is going to be fighting Lyoto Machida (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122516/lyoto-machida) on Dec. 10, surely Evans, who will be healthy by January, should get a fight in the meantime.
And that's where Phil Davis comes in.

"Mr. Wonderful" has been recovering from the knee issue that kept him out of the first scheduled booking against Evans during the summer. Now, though, he's finally healthy and raring to get back inside the Octagon.

What better way to do it than against the number one contender to the 205-pound belt?
Evans vs. Davis is reportedly set to serve as the main event of the UFC on Fox 2 fight card going down on Jan. 28, 2012, from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Other match-ups booked for the card are Chael Sonnen (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122570/chael-sonnen) vs. Mark Munoz (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/126094/mark-munoz), Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight/1453/ufc-on-fox-2-jon-olav-einemo-vs-mike-russow) and Demetrious Johnson vs. Eddie Wineland (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight/1399/ufc-on-fox-2-demetrious-johnson-vs-eddie-wineland).

Evans won toen via TKO.

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis Bout Set for UFC on FOX 2

A light-heavyweight match pitting former division champion Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) and rising contender Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/) will take place at the upcoming UFC on FOX 2 show in January, sources told MMA Fighting on Wednesday, confirming an overnight report from ESPN (http://espn.go.com/mma/story/_/id/7297120/light-heavyweights-rashad-evans-phil-davis-fight-ufc-fox-2-sources-say).

Late on Tuesday night, UFC president Dana White told MMA Fighting that he could not yet confirm the show's main event. But while the promotion has yet to announce the pairing, barring any unforeseen setbacks, it is expected to be made official within days and is likely to serve as the headliner.

Evans (16-1-1) lost out on a pair of possible title shots against current champ Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/) due to respective injuries to both men over the last few months. At UFC 133 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+133/), he was nearly set to face Jones until a hand injury sidelined the champ. Evans was then paired with Davis, but a knee injury scuttled that fight as well.

Instead, Evans ended up facing and defeating Tito Ortiz in a second-round TKO.

Unfortunately for Evans, he injured his hand during the fight and could not take a December 10 date with Jones either, allowing Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/) to step in and fight for the belt.

If Evans wins, the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) will once again attempt to set him up for another title shot, this time against the Jones-Machida winner.

To do so, he'll have to get past the unbeaten Davis, who has not fought since earning a unanimous decision victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueria in March. At 9-0, Davis has cracked the top 10 of most light-heavyweight polls, but the former Penn State collegiate wrestling All-American faces a big step up in competition against Evans. His knee now healed, he's being asked to jump right into top competition.

The UFC on FOX 2 card takes place at Chicago's United Center on January 28 and is the official kickoff to the seven-year deal signed between UFC and FOX in August. A one-hour teaser event held in November drew an average of 5.7 million viewers, with 8.8 million watching Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/) capture the heavyweight title by knocking out Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/cain/velasquez/497/).

Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz Set for UFC on Fox 2

Chael Sonnen will have to win another fight before he can get his long-awaited rematch with Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/), because the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) has announced that Sonnen's next fight will take place on January 28 in Chicago, when Sonnen will fight Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/) in the co-main event at the second UFC on Fox event.

Sonnen had been expected to face Silva -- whom he called out after beating Brian Stann (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brian/stann/667/) in October -- but Silva is nursing a shoulder injury and apparently won't be ready for a few months. So Sonnen vs. Munoz will determine the next No. 1 contender in the middleweight division.

The Sonnen-Munoz fight matches up two of the best wrestlers in the middleweight division; Sonnen used his wrestling to control Silva for four rounds before getting submitted in the fifth, while Munoz is a former NCAA wrestling champion who is currently riding a four-fight winning streak.

A Sonnen-Silva rematch has long been viewed as the biggest fight the UFC could book in its middleweight division, but if Munoz beats Sonnen, a Munoz-Silva fight would also be big. Munoz is 7-1 since moving down to middleweight, with the only loss coming by split decision to former top contender Yushin Okami (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/yushin/okami/479/), so Munoz would certainly be worthy of a title shot if he gets past Sonnen.

The UFC on Fox 2 card will be headlined by Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) vs. Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/). Other fights expected for the card include Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demetrious/johnson/1495/) vs. Eddie Wineland (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/eddie/wineland/961/), Evan Dunham vs. Paul Sass, Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow and Cody McKenzie vs. Michael Johnson.

UFC on FOX 2 Fight Card: Evans vs. Davis

The UFC on FOX 2 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFConFOX2/) fight card headlined by Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) vs. Phil Davis is fast shaping up for the Jan. 22, 2012 event from the United Center in Chicago, Ill.

After hosting a heavyweight championship bout in November (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/11/12/ufc-on-fox-results-velasquez-vs-dos-santos/), the second live FOX event will feature two No. 1 contender bouts. Evans meets Davis for the next shot at the UFC light heavyweight title against the winner of UFC 140's Jon Jones (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/jones/549/)-Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/). Meanwhile, Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/) and Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/) will battle for a future shot against middleweight champion Anderson Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/anderson/silva/235/).

The current lineup is below.

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/)
Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz

Jon Jones Thinks Rashad Evans Has a Suspect Chin

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) have a long history, having gone from friends and training partners to enemies and rivals, and eventually, most likely, competitors for the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) light heavyweight title.

But a Jones-Evans title fight has already been delayed a couple times and can't happen unless both men win their upcoming fights, with Jones taking on Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lyoto/machida/346/) at UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) and Evans fighting Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/) at UFC on FOX 2. And Jones has some doubts about whether a fight with Evans is going to happen at all.

Instead, Jones said on The MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Hour, he believes it's entirely possible that Davis will expose Evans as a fighter who has a suspect chin and can't handle a more powerful opponent.

"Rashad doesn't have a chin," Jones said. "Rashad does not have a chin, trust me."

Saying Evans doesn't have a chin wouldn't seem to mesh with Evans' career record: In 18 professional MMA fights, Evans has only been beaten once, by Lyoto Machida. It's true that Machida knocked Evans out in brutal fashion, but Evans has managed to beat a lot of guys with significant punching power, including Rampage Jackson, Chuck Liddell (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chuck/liddell/113/) and Thiago Silva (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/thiago/silva/488/). However, Jones's comments may reflect what Jones has witnessed in training with Evans, as the two of them sparred plenty of times when they were both based at Greg Jackson's gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jones said he expects Davis to give Evans a competitive fight, and it wouldn't surprise him if Davis is the one who earns a shot at the light heavyweight title.

"If Phil can have faith in his stand-up abilities and faith in his grappling abilities this will be a closer fight than people realize," Jones said.

But if Evans gets by that tough fight with Davis, it may finally be time for Jones and Evans to stop talking about each other, and actually fight each other.

Michael Bisping to Face Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 2

A middleweight clash between Michael Bisping (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/bisping/368/) and Demian Maia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demian/maia/326/) has been added to the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX 2 event on Jan. 28, 2012 at the United Center in Chicago, Ill.

Bisping-Maia joins the previously announced Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) vs. Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/) and Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/) vs. Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/) matchups in what the UFC is billing a "tripleheader on FOX."

Bisping (22-3) will enter the Jan. 28 fight undefeated in his last four fights. The Brit last Saturday earned a dominant win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller via third-round TKO at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in Las Vegas. Soon after, UFC president Dana White hinted at Bisping being a possible addition to UFC on FOX 2 (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/12/04/dana-white-calls-mayhem-bisping-one-of-most-one-sided-fights-in/).

Maia (15-3) went .500 in two fights in 2011. Maia fought Munoz at UFC 131 last June to a close unanimous decision loss and then bounced back in October at UFC 136 with a safe decision win over Jorge Santiago (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jorge/santiago/401/).

The current UFC on FOX 2 lineup now looks like this:

Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/)
Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz
Michael Bisping vs. Demian Maia
Evan Dunham (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/evan/dunham/648/) vs. Paul Sass (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/paul/sass/1641/)

Spike TV Will Counter-Program Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis on Fox

The UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc)'s TV contract with Spike runs out at the end of the year, and Spike has already announced that it plans to aggressively counter-program the UFC's programming with its new TV partner, Fox.

Spike sent out a press release on Wednesday announcing that it will air a Saturday night programming lineup on January 28 entitled UFC Unleashed: Evans vs. Davis, which will run simultaneously with the UFC on Fox card headlined by Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) vs. Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/).

Spike's lineup will run from 4 PM to midnight and feature fights involving Evans and Davis, as well as Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/), Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/) and Michael Bisping (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/bisping/368/), all of whom are also fighting on the Fox card on January 28.

For Spike, this is basically an attempt to use the powerful marketing of the UFC and Fox against them: Fox will market Evans and Davis during NFL games, and the UFC will put Evans and Davis on billboards, and when fight night rolls around, some viewers flipping through the channels will end up watching their old fights on Spike.

Labeling the event "Evans vs. Davis" may do a disservice to some viewers who will set their DVRs for "Evans vs. Davis" only to realize after the fact that they recorded the wrong program, although it's hard to imagine many viewers will be fooled into watching the wrong fight. But this is the way Spike programming is likely to look for the remainder of 2012: When UFC fighters are live in the Octagon, Spike will treat its viewers to a heavy dose of reruns from the same fighters.

Chael Sonnen Admits He Was 'The Bad Guy' Against Mark Munoz in College

CHICAGO -- Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/) was his usual brash-talking self when promoting his upcoming fight with Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/) on Wednesday, even acknowledging that when he wrestled against Munoz in college, he took a cheap shot -- and he's not sorry about it.

Munoz, who was an NCAA champion wrestler at Oklahoma State, has said in the past that when he took on Sonnen during an Oklahoma State-Oregon wrestling meet in college, Sonnen illegally attempted a jiu jitsu-style knee bar in an attempt to hurt him.

"When we wrestled, Chael -- in the heat of the battle -- he got a knee bar and cranked on it a little bit," Munoz said. "It happens. You get things tweaked on and everything and that's what happens sometimes. The ref is there to stop it. It's water underneath the bridge now. Chael has fought for a long time. He's a great fighter and it's going to be an honor to fight him. He's got awesome MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) wrestling, I've got great wrestling. You're going to see a lot of wrestling going on."

It was magnanimous of Munoz to say that Sonnen's actions came in the heat of the moment, but Sonnen said that actually wasn't the case.

"Mark's explanation, the heat of the moment, I appreciate it," Sonnen said. "But it was a calculated and premeditated event."

Sonnen said he's perfectly willing to play the role of the bad guy who tried to hurt his opponent in a college wrestling match, although he's long since stopped thinking about his college wrestling career. What Sonnen is focused on is having a shot at Munoz in the Octagon.

"I assure you," Sonnen said. "On January 28, I will be ready. It will be one more in the win column, one more on the mantel and one more for the bad guy."

Dana White: Rashad Evans' Penn State Joke 'One of the Dumbest Things You Could Say'

UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) president Dana White is well aware that Rashad Evans (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/rashad/evans/387/) stepped over the line with his pre-fight trash-talk when he referenced the Penn State sex abuse scandal (http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/12/07/rashad-evans-brings-up-penn-state-scandal-in-pre-fight-trash-tal/) while taking a verbal jab at former Nittany Lions wrestler Phil Davis (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/phil/davis/1189/) on Wednesday.

As White told reporters following Thursday's UFC 140 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+140/) press conference, he made sure Evans knew it too.

"We talked." said White, who called Evans' remark "one of the dumbest things you could say," in light of the child abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. According to White, he didn't have to convince Evans that he'd made a mistake in using the story as a topical reference point at the UFC on FOX presser in Chicago yesterday.

"It's not like I'm dealing with stupid people here," White said. "It's one thing when you're dealing with dummies. When you're dealing with people who are really stupid, it's tough to talk to them. But when you call a guy who's an intelligent guy, he gets it. He knows."

Evans brought the heat on himself when exchanging words with Davis at the press conference, telling the former NCAA Division I wrestling champ: "I guarantee you'll be the first one to take a shot cause I'm going to put my hands on you worse than that dude did them other kids at Penn State."

Evans, who wrestled at Michigan State, later told MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting that he has nothing against Davis, but was merely trying to play up a rivalry for entertainment value.

"I have plenty of respect for him as a fighter and as a person," said Evans. "But when it comes to competing with me, I gotta let my mouth go a little bit."

He let it go too far this time, White said, but the UFC president sounded hesitant to take any official punitive action over the remark.

"The whole thing with me is people are looking to me, and I saw a couple of stupid stories that were written, people who want attention -- you know who those people are," White said. "What do you want me to do? You want me to have our lawyers draw something up and I'll come out and read it to you guys? You know, he said something stupid. It's probably one of the dumbest things you could say. He gets it, and he knows it was a stupid thing to say, and we'll see what happens."

Shonie Carter Told by UFC Matchmaker That UFC on FOX 2 Card Is Full

Although there's no spot currently for him on the card, UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) veteran Shonie Carter (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/shonie/carter/162/) says he won't stop his campaign to take part in the Jan. 28 UFC on FOX 2 event.

Carter is asking for a one-fight deal with the UFC to compete on the undercard of what will be the biggest MMA card in his hometown of Chicago.

On Wednesday, Carter attended the UFC on FOX 2 press conference not as a fighter, but a journalist.

"It actually hurts to be here and be a journalist and thinking fight at the same time," Carter told MMA Fighting, standing on the floor of the United Center. "These young men, I've watched them when they were rookies. They grew up watching me and I have the upmost and profound respect for all of them and I don't ever quit. I believe in fighting the good fight and until that first bell rings, or until the weigh-ins are over, I am going to campaign."

At the press conference, UFC president Dana White replied to a reporter's question about Carter by saying "I think he needs to talk to [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva," before sending out a "Good luck, Shonie."

Carter has tried to no avail, but is holding out hope for an opening.

"I have reached out to [Silva] and he said the card was full," Carter told MMA Fighting. "But I'm still working out like a mad man."

On paper, Carter doesn't deserve consideration on the card, having lost six of his last seven fights. And Carter, who is best known for a spinning backfist knockout over Matt Serra at UFC 31, hasn't competed in the UFC in five years.

But to Carter's credit, the former WEC champion has been a staple in the Chicago martial arts scene for over a decade and is a well-liked figure in the sport.

Carter explains fighting at the United Center would be a special moment for him and a thank you to all his hometown fans. Carter grew up in the West Side of Chicago and he currently lives so close to the arena that he's just two bus rides away.

"11-and-a-half minutes, I timed it," Carter said with a laugh.

While it might be a long shot, it's not stopping Carter from trying.

"I'm going to keep bugging [Silva]," Carter said. "Until he says yes."

Demian Maia: I Know I Can Submit Michael Bisping

Demian Maia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demian/maia/326/) thinks he can be the first person to hand Michael Bisping (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/bisping/368/) a submission loss.

"He has a good submission defense but it doesn't matter," Maia recently told MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) Fighting. "I've fought guys before that have never been submitted before many times and I've submitted them. I know I have the chance to submit him."

It will also be his strategy when he meets Bisping at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX 2 on Jan. 28. Maia acknowledges this fight against Bisping will be a great opportunity for him to showcase his jiu-jitsu skills again.

Maia, who held submission wins in his first five UFC fights, has seen his six most recent fights end in decision. Maia explains the lack of finishes have been due to more challenging opponents and his focus on improving in other areas of MMA.

"It's expectations," Maia told the press at last week's UFC on FOX 2 conference. "I fight everytime tougher and toughers guys. I took time to learn more boxing, thai boxing and even wrestling. I cannot just train jiu-jitsu anymore. I need to be an MMA fighter."

Maia last fought at UFC 136 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+136/) in October, outpointing Jorge Santiago (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jorge/santiago/401/) after three rounds. Meanwhile, Bisping is coming off a win against Jason "Mayhem" Miller on Dec. 3.

Maia was informed on Dec. 2 the possibility of meeting the winner of Bisping-Miller later at UFC on FOX 2. After Saturday's fights, Bisping had to return home and decide if he would make a quick turnaround and fight again on the Jan. 28 card. The fight wasn't official until last Wednesday's UFC on FOX 2 press conference at the United Center.

"They just set me the flight tickets yesterday, like two hours before I went to the airport," Maia said. "We just came here."

In fact, Maia didn't sign the bout agreement until after the conference.

If Maia wants to submit Bisping though, he'll have to take him down first. Bisping has done a solid job keeping the fight standing, winning nine of his 15 UFC fights via (T)KO.

"Sometimes people underrate him, I don't know why," Maia said. "But I think he's tough, he's good. He's only lost three fights in his career."

Lavar Johnson Moves From Strikeforce to UFC for Chicago FOX Event

As Zuffa moves forward on its plans to fold Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/)'s heavyweight division into the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc), the company announced Tuesday that Lavar Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/lavar/johnson/1378/) will be the next Strikeforce heavyweight to set foot in the Octagon.

Johnson will fight Joey Beltran (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/joey/beltran/1203/) at UFC on Fox 2 on January 28 in Chicago.

The hard-punching Johnson won three straight fights on Strikeforce Challengers cards in 2009 and 2010, but this year he lost to Shane Del Rosario in an alternate bout in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, then bounced back down to Challengers and lost to Shawn Jordan. He's in a must-win situation at UFC on Fox 2, and so is Beltran, who has lost three of his last four.

The UFC also made a few other fight announcements on Tuesday afternoon:
-- Featherweight Erik Koch (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/erik/koch/1092/) has suffered an injury and is out of his planned UFC 143 fight against Dustin Poirier (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dustin/poirier/1595/). Koch and Poirier are two of the best young featherweights in the sport, and that fight should have been a big one. The UFC will seek a replacement to fight Poirier.

-- The 5-0 Brazilian prospect Caio Magalhaes has been signed and will make his Octagon debut in his home country against Fabio Maldonado (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/fabio/maldonado/1663/) at UFC 142 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+142/). Maldonado had previously been scheduled to face Stansislav Nedkov, but he was forced to withdraw from the fight.

-- John Albert, a bantamweight who competed on the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter and beat Dustin Pague in the Finale, will return and take a step up in quality of competition when he takes on Ivan Menjivar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/ivan/menjivar/476/) at the February 15 UFC on Fuel TV card in Omaha.

Paul Sass, Eddie Wineland Both Injured, Removed From UFC on FOX 2 Event

Paul Sass and Eddie Wineland recently suffered injuries and have been removed from the undercard of the Jan. 28 UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX 2 event in Chicago, the UFC announced Monday evening.

In for Sass against Evan Dunham will be Nik Lentz. Meanwhile, a new opponent for Johnny Bedford is to be announced.

With Wineland out, Mike Russow is left as the only true Chicago-area fighter currently scheduled on the card. Rashad Evans lives in downtown Chicago, but trains out of Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Fla.

Lentz (21-4-2) fought earlier this month, suffering his first UFC loss in a decision against Mark Bocek at UFC 140. Prior to the Dec. 10 fight, Lentz compiled a 5-0-1 (and one no contest) since starting with the UFC in September 2009.

Dunham (12-2) snapped a two-fight losing streak in September with a unanimous decision nod against Shamar Bailey at UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger.

Bedford (18-9-1) is a TUF 15 contestant who recently won his UFC debut in a dominant performance against the outsized Louis Gaudinot. Bedford found himself on this card as a substitute for Demetrious Johnson against Wineland. Johnson was removed from the card to face Ian McCall in the semifinals of the UFC's flyweight tournament

CM Punk Won't Escort Chael Sonnen to Octagon at UFC on FOX

WWE champion CM Punk will not escort Chael Sonnen to the Octagon prior to Sonnen's fight against Mark Munoz on Jan. 28, after all.

Punk confirmed with MMAFighting.com that WWE chairman Vince McMahon decided against allowing him to walk out to the cage with Sonnen later this month. MMA reporter FrontRowBrian first reported the news Friday afternoon.

The Punk/Sonnen pairing created a major buzz in both the MMA and professional wrestling world when it was first reported, but most assumed it was UFC president Dana White who would be against the idea of a pro wrestler walking out to the cage with a top fighter on FOX, not McMahon.

UFC on FOX, headlined by Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis, returns on Jan. 28 from the United Center in Chicago. Sonnen vs. Munoz will serve as the co-main event.

Chael Sonnen to Face Michael Bisping at UFC on FOX 2

Chael Sonnen (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/chael/sonnen/296/) will now take on Michael Bisping (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/michael/bisping/368/) in a No. 1 contender bout at UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) on FOX 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago, UFC president Dana White announced Tuesday.

Mark Munoz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/mark/munoz/653/), Sonnen's previously scheduled opponent, had to withdraw due to injury, according to White. The UFC decided then to move Bisping out of his fight against Demian Maia (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demian/maia/326/) to face Sonnen instead on the same card.

White didn't mention Maia's status on the card.

While matchup changes two weeks before a show is never ideal, Sonnen-Bisping was a matchup the UFC previously targeted. The two middleweights were in talks to coach against each other on The Ultimate Figher 14, but Jason "Mayhem" Miller was tapped to face Bisping due to the timing of Sonnen's legal issues.

Bisping (22-3), who is on a four-fight winning streak, defeated Miller by TKO last December at the TUF 14 Finale. Coming off the fight will little damage, Bisping soon after agreed to face Maia on the FOX card.

Sonnen (26-11-1) returned to action last October and submitted Brian Stann with an arm-triangle choke.

White has also made it clear the winner of Sonnen-Bisping will face champion Anderson Silva for the belt.

Chris Weidman to Face Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 2

Undefeated middleweight Chris Weidman has agreed to step in and face submissions specialist Demian Maia at the UFC on FOX 2 event just eleven days from now, UFC president Dana White announced on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

Maia was previously slated to face Michael Bisping on that same card, but lost his opponent when Bisping was shuffled into a fight with Chael Sonnen, replacing an injured Mark Munoz on the Jan. 28 event in Chicago.

According to White, Weidman accepted the short-notice fight against Maia after it was offered to another Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, Rousimar Palhares, who turned it down.

Weidman comes into the fight with a perfect 7-0 record, with the last three of those wins coming in the UFC. He last competed at UFC 139 in San Jose this past November, where he choked out Tom Lawlor with a first-round D'Arce choke.

Maia, a former UFC middleweight title contender, last competed at UFC 136 in October, defeating Jorge Santiago via unanimous decision. Earlier today he wrote on Twitter that he was "very sad" his fight with Bisping wouldn't go down as scheduled "cause it would be a very important fight for me."

Once White announced that Weidman, a former All-American wrestler at Hofstra University, would be stepping in to take Bisping's place, the Brazilian middleweight responded simply, "Thanks boss!!!"

The bout is schedule to air live on FOX on Jan. 28, alongside the Bisping-Sonnen fight and the light heavyweight main event bout between former light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans and Phil Davis.

For Mark Munoz, Lost Opportunity Tough to Swallow, But Title Hopes Unfazed

For Mark Munoz, the goal remains the same. It's just the timeline that needs to be altered.

On Thursday morning at 10 am PT, the UFC middleweight will go from surging contender to surgery center when he undergoes a procedure to remove floating bone chips in his right elbow. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Ronald Kvitne of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, the same medical group that recently performed UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre's successful ACL repair.

Munoz aims to scale the same heights that St-Pierre has reached in his career, namely as king of his division. It is a goal that seemed in his sights as recently as one week ago, when he was preparing to face Chael Sonnen at UFC at January 28's UFC on FOX 2 for the right to face middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Munoz told MMA Fighting that during a training session last Friday, he was engaged in a wrestling scramble when his elbow slipped out and he felt two pops. He sparred four more rounds that night, but by the end of his workout, he couldn't even pick up his gym bag.

By the next day, he'd flown to Las Vegas, had his arm examined, and received a cortisone shot in hopes of going through with the fight, but it was not to be. The injury had rendered his arm nearly useless, and Munoz's hopes of becoming No. 1 contender were forced to give way to the reality that he would instead need surgery.

"It's definitely a hard pill to swallow," he said on Tuesday afternoon, less than 24 hours from his surgery. "Everything happens for a reason. In my mind I can't see it right now. But I truly believe in my heart, soul and mind, I'll be stronger because of it. I don't want to be consumed with negative thoughts. With the guys around me, my kids, my family, I can't think that way. I'm a man of faith, and I truly believe everything will work out for the good. So now it's just being confronted with what's in front of me, going about it the best I can and seeing what the future holds for me."

At least he can rationalize the setback with the knowledge that the operation was an inevitability.

In fact, Munoz (12-2) had already mentally prepared himself for surgery following his last fight, a TKO stoppage of Chris Leben at last November's UFC 138. The victory was his fourth straight, and seventh in his last eight fights. But just as Munoz began to make plans to go on the shelf, Silva was diagnosed with an injury of his own, leaving Sonnen with no opponent for early 2012. When Munoz got the call from UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for a chance to fight Sonnen for top contender status, he instantly decided to go for it.

That's the same as it had been for Munoz for a while. He said the initial injury that began his elbow problems took place in his first WEC fight, way back in June 2008. But the fights and opportunities came so fast and furious, he could never find the appropriate time to address the issue.

"It's been a problem a long time but I never got it fixed," he said. "Over time, it kept hurting, but I'd fight through it, because I was sparring well and grappling well. But now the loose bodies there make it so I can't even move my arm. It locks up every time."

Munoz says the bone fragments are stuck in his elbow joint, making him unable to properly flex his right arm. He can't push or pull with the arm, making it essentially useless during the grind of a fight. The surgery will clean out the loose pieces, and Munoz said he's been told he'll be unable to train for 4-6 weeks as it mends.

He hopes to fight again as soon as late April or early May, saying he's hoping to get on the "fast track" to coming back. As such, he said he's already working on increasing his physical therapy frequency from three sessions a week to five.

But it won't be enough to get him the opportunity he wanted. Somehow, he said, he'll bring himself to watch the UFC on FOX show, a event that was supposed to announce him as the next contender. He expects Sonnen to take Bisping down and grind out a win, setting up a rematch with Silva. And when that happens, Munoz will be there, breathing down their necks, promising to eventually find the winner down the line.

"It's been the goal since I started fighting," he said. "I want to be at the top."

Rashad Evans and Phil Davis Crank Up the Trash-Talk Before UFC on FOX 2

It took a little over a half-hour for Rashad Evans and Phil Davis to stop being polite and start being real on Friday's UFC on FOX 2 media call. But once it happened, there was no going back.

The catalyst, innocently enough, was a straightforward question for Davis about the odds of him being the very next challenger for UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones if he gets past Evans in Chicago. Not surprisingly, Davis likes his chances.

"After I beat Rashad on the 28th, they won't really have anything else to do with me other than to have me fight [Jones]," Davis said. "Rashad is the true number one contender, and after he loses, who else do I fight? The champion."

A few awkward silences later, Evans decided to cut out the middle man and address his foe directly.

"You ain't beating me, dog," said the former 205-pound champ. "And you know what? It can't get here fast enough, because I'm going to smash you, dude."

And away we went.

"It's about time," quipped UFC middleweight Michael Bisping, who was also on the call, but keeping things relatively tame with his new opponent, Chael Sonnen. "I was falling asleep here."

The hard part about arguing on a media conference call is that you never know for sure when the other guy is finished, and when it's your turn to retort. This results in a lot of talking over one another, with clever threats and unsubtle predictions lost in the static of two men trying to drown one another out. Imagine those political roundtable shows if no one could see each other.

But for a few brief moments on Friday, Evans and Davis actually managed to have something resembling a conversation. It went a little something like this:

Evans: "He ain't ready. He knows he ain't ready. I look in his eyes and see he ain't ready. Just a boy."

Davis: "It's a shame. I was kind of thinking, you really shouldn't be too concerned about that title shot. That's just one of those things. It's not going to be for a little while. You've got a little while until you've got to worry about a title shot."

Evans: "We're going to see what happens when those lights hit you, when you walk out and that crowd is roaring. We're going to see. We're going to see what kind of man you are. We're going to see what kind of fighter you are, because I know you ain't no fighter."

Here the trash-talk beams were once again crossed, and neither could hear over the sound of his own voice. But when pressed on his claim that Davis was not a fighter, despite the 9-0 record as a professional that would seem to argue otherwise, things calmed down enough for Evans to explain.

"Look, there's some people that would fight if they weren't getting paid to fight, and I'm one of those people. Phil is not one of those people."

If he was expecting Davis to protest this characterization, he was quickly disappointed. The former NCAA champion wrestler told Evans he was "absolutely right," saying that if he wasn't doing this for a living, "I'd be pushing a pen."

"But since I get paid to fight, looks like you next," he added.

More loud noises, more talking over one another, more missed sound bytes.

According to Evans, however, there is a difference between the people who will fight only for money and the people for whom the money is just a bonus. "There's a difference in mindset," he said over and over again. Was Davis convinced by this argument? He was not.

"Right now, you can say what you want to over the phone, but when we get in that cage and you can't get out, we're going to see how you feel then," Evans added.

Which is, of course, what pre-fight trash-talk battles always boil down to. One man predicts victory for himself and crushing defeat for the other guy, while his opponent offers his reasons for disagreeing. Sooner or later, it always comes back to, 'We'll find out on fight night.'

And we will. That's the great part about this sport. But as long as we're waiting, you can't blame these two for wanting to give us all -- not to mention one another -- something to think about. According to Davis, these pre-fight exchanges will not be forgotten when the cage door closes.

"I'm going to remind you with every shot," he told Evans. "When I'm on top of you, I'm going to remind you with every shot what you said."

As if Evans is in any danger of forgetting this conversation by next Saturday night. As if any of us are.

Maar ik denk dat Evans wel gebrand is op een goed resultaat.

Think Michael Bisping Isn't Ready for a Title Shot? He Begs to Differ

Michael Bisping hadn't yet gotten his heart rate down and his breathing back to normal following his TKO win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller and already UFC president Dana White was in his face, trying to talk him into another fight.

"[White] asked me immediately after the fight, 'Do you want to fight on the FOX card on January 28?'" said Bisping. "I thought, fighting on FOX right now is a bigger deal than anything else. You can't get any higher than that."

He also thought, up until last week, that he'd be fighting jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia, and that he might have at least one more fight after that before he'd have a realistic chance at a title shot. Now, thanks to an injury to Mark Munoz, all that has changed. The question is, has it changed for the better or the worse?

Judging by the stakes of the fight alone, you'd have to say that Bisping's lot has improved significantly. Before the switcheroo on the UFC on FOX 2 card, he was fully prepared to wait in line behind the winner of the Chael Sonnen-Munoz fight in order to get a crack at UFC gold. He was also prepared to take another fight in the meantime, he said, since more fights mean more paychecks.

"I want a title, but also I want to keep fighting because I want to earn money," he explained. "That's why I do this, first and foremost. I do this for money. [People say], 'I do this to challenge myself,' and all this other crap; that's bulls--t. I do this for money. I do this to give my family a certain lifestyle. And yes, I want to be champion, I want to be the best. That's the next thing. But ultimately I want to put money in the bank and provide for my children's future, and that's how I do it is fighting. I'm not going to do it sitting around waiting for a title shot."

As it turned out, all he had to do was wait around for a phone call. While eating lunch following a training session last week, he said, he got a call from White, who explained that Munoz was out and he could be in -- if he wanted to be.

"He said if I win I'm fighting Anderson Silva in a soccer stadium in Brazil in the summer. It's too big of an opportunity to turn down. I've trained my whole life for this moment, so of course, I didn't hesitate."

But if you believe oddsmakers, Bisping now finds himself in a much tougher fight. Most bookmakers favor Sonnen in the fight by a nearly 5-1 margin, making Bisping by far the heaviest underdog on the network TV portion of the card. The fight against Maia seemed difficult, though certainly winnable. The fight against Sonnen, at least according to most experts, is a real longshot for the British middleweight.

Part of that, it seems, is a problem of perception. To many fight fans -- and even to Sonnen, if you can ever take what he says at face value -- Bisping is a fighter who wins, but who has yet to prove himself against opponents who matter.

"He certainly hasn't beaten anybody that's any good, rankings-wise," Sonnen explained when I spoke to him last week.

In other words, he just doesn't seem like a legitimate title challenger to many outside observers, and so they have a hard time imagining him in the same cage with someone like Anderson Silva. But according to Bisping, that's where perception doesn't line up with reality.

"I've been in the UFC since 2006," he said. "That's six years, and I've been consistently facing the best opponents out there. If you look at my record, it's a who's who of mixed martial arts, to be honest, and I've done very well."

Take, for instance, his current four-fight win streak, which includes victories over Dan Miller, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and "Mayhem" Miller. Maybe it's not a path of fire through number one contenders, but it is a list of solid wins against guys who matter. Perhaps more importantly, look at his losses.

As Bisping is quick to point out: "I've only ever been stopped once in my career, and I've got two very, very debatable decision [losses]."

Detractors would point out that he also has at least one debatable decision win over Matt Hamill, but it's still a point worth considering. These days there's no shame in getting knocked out by the likes of Dan Henderson, and there's no reason for a middleweight contender to feel bad about a split decision against former UFC light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans, either.

It's enough to make you wonder, is Bisping better than he gets credit for from American fans? Just because some people can't imagine him beating a superior wrestler like Sonnen and coming face to face with Silva in a soccer stadium, does that actually mean anything?

"Chael Sonnen had his shot," said Bisping. "He blew it. Who else is there?"

If he can find away to prove the oddsmakers and the critics wrong and get his hand raised in Chicago on Saturday night, he'll have his answer. So will fight fans everywhere, whether they like it or not.

Phil Davis Confident a Jon Jones Fight Would Go His Way

CHICAGO -- Three days out from his main event battle with Rashad Evans on Saturday night, Phil Davis was brimming with confidence. And not just about how he matches up with Evans.

In addition to explaining why he thinks he's going to come out on top against Evans, Davis also said he believes that he would beat the man at the top of the light heavyweight division, Jon Jones.

"I think a fight with me and Jon would go like any other fight I've had," Davis said.

When I asked him if that meant he would win, Davis answered, "I am undefeated."

Davis said he's aware that Jones has said publicly that he's expecting Evans to win on Saturday night, and therefore earn a title shot. But Davis said he's not particularly concerned about Jones's opinions, and that he expects to show on Saturday night that he's the most worthy future opponent to Jones, who has looked practically unbeatable in running through the UFC light heavyweight division.

As for Saturday's fight with Evans, Davis noted that his own credentials as an NCAA champion at Penn State dwarf the wrestling accomplishments of Evans at Michigan State, and he said he expects to be the one who's in control throughout their fight on Saturday night.

"I'm the man who determines what happens," Davis said.

Davis hasn't fought since his unanimous decision victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in March, and he said he has improved so much in the gym since then that Evans will be seeing a completely different fighter.

"Truthfully, he has no idea," Davis said. "I haven't fought in a year and a lot can change in a year's time. I'm very young in my career, and the last time I fought I knew a lot less about my style of fighting, and Rashad Evans knows even less about my style as a fighter. He has no idea what to expect. He doesn't know my wrestling, he doesn't know my standing, he doesn't know."

In addition to that wrestling advantage, Davis said he believes his time in the gym has made him a better stand-up fighter than he was when he faced Nogueira.

"He might have out-struck me a year ago," Davis said. "I'm planning on him not being able to stop a lot of the things I do well. ... My game has come a long way since my fight with Nogueira, and I'm anxious for people to see how far I've come since my time off."

If Davis has come far enough that he can beat Evans, then Jones might be next.

UFC on FOX 2 Fight Week Kicks Off in South Side Chicago Boxing Gym

CHICAGO -- The UFC arrived in town Wednesday, settling down in the south side of the city inside a hearty, no-frills boxing gym to kick off the UFC on FOX 2 fight week festivities leading up to Saturday's event at the United Center.

Gathering inside a muggy room with two boxing rings inside the Chicago Boxing Club gym, Rashad Evans, Phil Davis and the main attractions took turns working out for the media.

The main event on Saturday features two lively personalities in Evans and Davis and much has been made of their willingness to embrace in pre-fight verbal sparring sessions. However, three days removed from their light heavyweight tilt, the two appeared to be in a different mind frame. Perhaps they were saving their material for Thursday's official press conference or the two were simply eager to fight. But gone from the former champion Evans' demeanor on Wednesday was his energetic playfulness prominent at last month's press conference that landed him in hot water.

Instead, Evans completed his shadowboxing and padwork without a hint of a smile. Evans turned on a friendly attitude once he began speaking to the press but even then the Chicago resident was mostly soft-spoken.

Davis, a slight underdog heading into the fight, presented himself as a confident competitor and sounded as self-assured as ever. The unbeaten 27-year-old spoke about benefiting from his lengthy layoff by having greatly improved in his MMA fundamentals.

"He might have outstruck me a year ago," Davis said. "I don't know if that's going to happen on Saturday."

Evans acknowledged the likelihood of seeing an improved Davis, but insisted he already understands the basics of Davis' movement and cadence inside the cage.

Former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen chose to handle the media interviews prior to working out, welcoming a discussion with reporters on everything from his fight against Michael Bisping to his political stance to possibly voting for Brian Stann as a write-in candidate.

Sonnen shrugged off the challenges of having initially prepared for Mark Munoz, stating he doesn't believe in things such as a "gameplan" anyway. And contrary to what the UFC is saying, Sonnen also reiterated his belief that a rematch against champion Anderson Silva won't materialize even if Sonnen emerges victorious Saturday.

"The title shot is not going to happen, I'm all for the marketing, I'll get behind it as much as the UFC wants to, but that's not going to happen." Sonnen said. "I'd rather go to Brazil, maybe Vitor [Belfort] or somebody else .... But Silva is not getting in there with me."

The strength of British middleweight contender Bisping lies in his effective boxing and he spent his entire workout primarily on his striking with trainer Tiki Ghosn on the mitts.

Judging from their workouts, the wrestling-centric Chris Weidman and jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia are anticipating a ground war. Weidman practiced a variety fundamental wrestling takedowns -- single-legs, double-legs, trips, ankle picks, etc. with training parter and Strikeforce fighter Gian Villante. The 2007 ADCC grapplng champion Maia was the rare fighter to incorporate jiu-jitsu into his workout for the press.

Embracing this grand opportunity, Weidman was in such positive spirits that you wouldn't have guessed he's in the process of a difficult weight cut. His camp admits the one-week notice has been challenging on their preparations but assures Weidman will be on target come Friday's weigh-in.

Following the workouts, former WEC champ Miguel Torres and UFC on FOX 2 competitor Mike Russow spoke with teens about the importance of staying focused and avoiding the temptations of drugs and alcohol. After the brief talk, Torres guided the teens through boxing drills.

To Get to Jon Jones, Rashad Evans Has to Beat Phil Davis and Greatest Foe: Bad Luck

It's hard enough to win a fight at the highest levels of mixed martial arts. If that was Rashad Evans' only task, it would be plenty to think about. But like every other athlete on the UFC roster, Evans wants not only to win, but also to be the best fighter in his division. Unlike most athletes on the roster, though, it's a real possibility for Evans. But it will require peripheral vision; his eyes have to scan wider than what's in front of them on Saturday night.

First things first, of course. At UFC on FOX 2, he'll have his hands full with Phil Davis, an unbeaten hulk who has had 10 months to add weapons into his arsenal. Still, Evans is the favorite. And in order to accomplish his secondary goal of finally securing a title fight, it's not enough just to win; he'll also have to emerge unscathed.

If he only manages the former and not the latter, he will go at least two years since the moment he was first named No. 1 contender, with no title shot in sight.

Yes, you read that right. Two years.

Timing has undone all of Evans' last three bites at the apple.

First, Evans was knocked out of a March 2011 title shot due to an injured knee suffered in training. Then, he was to fight for the belt in August, but an injury sidelined his opponent, Jon Jones. And finally, an Evans' thumb injury torpedoed a proposed December championship encounter.

Now, Jones is saying he will be ready to fight in the spring, preferably at the April 21 UFC event in Atlanta. That would give Evans -- if victorious -- less than three months to rest and prepare. If he can't make that date, he's likely out of luck again, as UFC has Dan Henderson and his right hand of doom cocked and loaded. That would send Evans to the sidelines again, to wait for some other opportunity to open up, probably in the summer at earliest.

The situation leaves him with a small window, both for this specific title opportunity and for his career.

It was back in May of 2010 when Evans was first declared next in line to fight for the belt. At the time, it seemed like little was standing in his way. He was peaking. At 30 years old, he'd just dispatched Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, while Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had just KO'd Lyoto Machida to take the title. Jones had yet to sniff the division's top 10, and Evans seemed to have a clear path to fight for the belt.

But due to various circumstances, he's never gotten the chance to cash in his chip. He's now 32 years old, and while he hasn't yet shown any signs of slowing, most scientific studies suggest that male athletes peak between the ages of 27-30. That means that two of his best years were at best underused, and at worst, wasted.

Keep in mind that Evans has only fought one time in the last 18 months, a second-round TKO win over Tito Ortiz at UFC 133. Let's face it, that win, while impressive in its dominance, didn't tell us anything we didn't already know about Evans. For all of his importance as an MMA pioneer, Ortiz has been on a steady decline, with only a single victory in the last five years. Even if his losses have come against good opposition, they are still losses.

It was a fight that Evans had to win impressively, and he did so. But he didn't leave it without a hand injury, one that cost him a UFC 140 date with Jones. Davis may be green, but he's likely to be a much more competitive opponent for Evans than Ortiz was. He's younger, stronger and probably hungrier, as well.

So where does that leave Evans? Either he's going to have to fight in a conservative style, minimize risk of injury and edge out a win on points, or he can go for broke, look to finish Davis quickly and get out of dodge. Either way, there's no guarantee he'll finally get what he's long been promised.

Despite all the boos Evans routinely hears walking into arenas, there's no denying that he has publicly handled the situation well. Imagine what it would be like to be so close but so far repeatedly. The frustration of it all must be somewhere inside of him, but he refuses to let it out, even though it envelops his situation.

Just this week, he was asked about the possibility that with Jones' request to fight in April, he could be bypassed yet again, No. 1 contender at large, in perpetuity. His answer was quite diplomatic.

"Jon's the champion and right now he's on top of the world so I guess he gets to make those choices," he said. "I'm trying to get to where he's at. With that said, I don't own any spot. I've had the privilege to be said I'm the No. 1 contender a couple times, but I've still yet to fight for the belt. That said, if the UFC has another contender they want to put in there to make the show go on, then that's by all means what they have to do. But that does not stop what I'm going to do which is keep on winning. And eventually, no matter what, I will get that title shot."

It must seem like forever ago when everything was right in front of him. Everything probably seemed so easy then. But time has passed, and Evans knows that there are no easy routes to the top. As he's learned, becoming the champion is not just about winning, and luck hasn't exactly always been on his side.

Who's the Better Wrestler? Rashad Evans, Phil Davis Go Toe-to-Toe

Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will determine on Saturday night which one of them is the better mixed martial artist. But they had a spirited discussion on Thursday afternoon about which one of them is the better wrestler.

On the surface, that wouldn't seem to be a close comparison: Both were college wrestlers, but Evans was merely a pretty good wrestler at Michigan State. Davis was a great wrestler, winning the NCAA championship his senior year and coming in second, fifth and seventh in the nation in his other three years.

However, Evans insisted in interviews this week that he's a better wrestler than Davis, prompting a colorful exchange.

"Cocaine's a hell of a drug," Davis said when first told that Evans had claimed to be a better wrestler. "It's crazy what the kids do nowadays. I encourage imagination and it's good that he has that, but no. He'll never beat me in wrestling. Not thumb wrestling. Not anything of the sort."

Evans, however, insisted that Davis merely used his physical strength to win wrestling matches, while Evans had superior technique.

"If I wrestled you in college I guarantee I would beat you," Evans said. "If we wrestled right now I guarantee I would beat you. Your technique is trash. You won a college championship off junk. You could not win on an international level because you have trash technique."

That prompted a brief exchange between the two, which UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) President Dana White ultimately ended:

Davis: "What have you been watching?"

Evans: "I watched you wrestle in college. It was trash."

White: "Next question, please."

The next question between Davis and Evans -- which one of them is the better fighter? -- will be answered on Saturday night.

Chael Sonnen Brings Title Belt to UFC on FOX 2 Press Conference

Although the UFC (as well as the rest of the world) recognizes Anderson Silva as the world middleweight champion, that's not stopping contender Chael Sonnen from walking around with his own replica belt.

A day after wearing the belt over his shoulder for an ESPN2 interview, Sonnen brought the belt to Thursday's UFC on FOX 2 press conference for everyone to take a closer look at the W Chicago City Center in Chicago.

"This is the world championship title of which I took from Anderson Silva," Sonnen explained of the belt in front of him. "In this country, possession is nine-tenths of the law. Finders keepers, losers weepers, and if he wants it back, he knows where to find me."

If Sonnen wants the real title, he'll have to beat Michael Bisping on Saturday to earn a title shot against Silva. To make matters confusing, Sonnen for the past month-and-a-half has insisted a rematch with Silva will not happen, claiming he's done chasing after a rematch with Silva. Instead, Sonnen said he would cash in his No. 1 contender voucher against a champion in another weight class.

On Thursday, White cleared up the situation, reiterating that the winner of Sonnen-Bisping will take on Silva for the belt in the summer.

"Chael's nuts," White said. "He says all kinds of crazy things. He's [claims he's] champion ... Listen to me. Okay? Listen to me. He's not the champion. He will fight Anderson Silva if he wins. He will not fight for the heavyweight championship or Jon Bones Jones."

Interestingly, Sonnen has strayed from trashing Bisping or previous opponent Mark Munoz leading up to UFC on FOX 2, instead sticking to cutting pro wrestling promos about emerging victorious on Saturday. It's clear as focused as Sonnen is on Bisping, there's still business to be settled between himself and Silva.

"I believe that I am the true champion," Sonnen said. "This is the true UFC belt. This was Anderson Silva's belt. I took his belt like a gangster in the night ... If he wants his belt back, he can come and get it. But as far as I'm concerned, he's as irrelevant as Mike Tyson. The only thing he hasn't done is announce his retirement. He sound paint his face, gain a hundred pounds, sit in the third row and hope somebody remembers who they are because neither of those guys matter anymore."

Rashad Evans has been the light-heavyweight division's No. 1 contender in waiting for 18 months, a lengthy purgatory that will only end if he beats Phil Davis at Saturday night's UFC on FOX 2 show, and emerges uninjured.

On paper, it is a fight he should win. He has twice as many fights as Davis, and has competed against higher-caliber opponents over the last few years. The odds reflect that, with Evans a 2-to-1 favorite by the estimates of most.

But there are also factors that suggest the outcome isn't quite that clear cut. For one, Evans (16-1-1) has only fought once in the last 18 months, against the struggling Tito Ortiz. For another, Davis (9-0) has had 10 months in between fights. Because of the fact that Davis is newer to the sport, he has more to learn, and might have benefited more from the time off between fights.

The biggest improvements Davis can hope to show in this matchup are his overall striking game and wrestling transitions. To date, Davis' best standup weapon has been his kicks, something he has proven to be reliant on. Against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, for example, he threw 18 kicks and 18 punches while standing. A true 1:1 kick/punch ratio is very unusual at the highest levels of MMA.

That ratio alone isn't troublesome, but the issue comes in the fact that against Nogueira, he landed only two of his 18 arm strikes, just 11 percent. He will have to do more in the pocket to keep Evans honest, because if Evans can completely discount his punches, the fight becomes easier for him. To that end, Davis has been working with fellow light-heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson as well as bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. After 10 months, it's hard to imagine we won't see any real improvements.

In recent days, Evans has made headlines for saying that Davis isn't a very good wrestler, a statement that doesn't jibe with Davis' pedigree as a former NCAA national champion.

"Your technique is trash," Evans said during a Thursday press conference. "You won a college championship off junk. You could not win on an international level because you have trash technique."

The statement was no doubt a piece of gamesmanship on Evans' part, but the fact is that given Davis' wrestling history, he has underperformed a bit in the takedown department, successfully landing just 50 percent of his tries according to FightMetric. His problems stem from often shooting from too far away with no setup. To date, Nogueira has been his most decorated opponent. Nogueira has no background in wrestling, but Davis was just four of 11 against him. Again, though, this is the type of area that could benefit from some intensive training, and Davis might look significantly better this time around.

On the other hand, in his limited time fighting, Davis has shown some of the best defensive work in MMA. According to FightMetric, he's only been hit .38 times per minute -- by far the lowest number in UFC history. He's also never been taken down, so has a perfect 100 percent takedown defense record.

Both of those numbers will be tested by Evans, who has the most complete game of any opponent Davis has yet to face. Evans won't be lost if just one thing doesn't work. He has good hands, throws kicks, moves well into takedowns and has effective ground and pound.

Evans has said that he has gone back to his wrestling roots, and that showed against Ortiz as most of the fight was spent on the ground. But given the fact that the area is Davis' strength, it's worth wondering if Evans will truly engage him there or simply wants to plant the seed in Davis' mind so he'll have something else to think about.

Evans is a very good MMA wrestler, but it's unlikely he'll put Davis on his back for any stretch of time. That leaves a fight where Evans is likely going to be on the defensive, hoping to avoid Davis' takedowns throughout. Remember, this is a five-round fight, so it could become a grind. Davis may or may not have success in taking the fight to the ground, but he's also quite likely to work Evans against the fence and hope to wear him down with dirty boxing and sheer physicality.

In some ways, that kind of plan could work to Evans' advantage. He's always fought well as a counter-striker, and he's never had any real issues with stamina. Davis has looked strong in fights that have gone the distance, but he's prepared to go five full rounds for the first time in his career, while Evans has had to do it three times now.

Their wrestling games should largely cancel each other out, so unless Davis has made a big leap forward in his striking, this should still be Evans' fight to lose. Evans is more experienced, has shown more power and has big-fight experience. Davis is still a blue-chip prospect, but there's no way to know whether his time off helped him by allowing him time to refine his skills, or it hurt him by adding ring rust. A Davis upset wouldn't be a huge surprise, as he's capable of grinding out a win with his physicality and will, but most other routes to victory seem to favor Evans, and so his perpetual role as top contender should continue by a close decision.

Chris Weidman's BJJ Coach Wouldn't Be Shocked if Weidman Submits Maia

Considering Chris Weidman's wrestling prowess and Demian Maia's jiu-jitsu mastery, there's a strong chance their middleweight bout at UFC on FOX 2 will be decided on the ground.

Now Maia has already shown he's one of the most dangerous submission artists at 185. But what about Weidman? Coming off back-to-back submission wins, can the prospect make it three-in-a-row against one of the best jiu-jitsu artists in MMA?

John Danaher, one of Weidman's jiu-jitsu trainers, says he "wouldn't be completely shocked."

"[Weidman]'s a formidable opponent on the floor," Danaher tells MMAFighting.com. "Trust me, you cannot fall asleep on him for a second. If you do, don't be surprised if you see an unexpected result."

Danaher agrees there will likely be many exchanges on the floor. And when asked if Weidman as the superior wrestler can dictate where the fight goes, Danaher argues Maia is tricky enough that he can pull guard.

"He's very effective from bottom position," Danaher said of Maia. "I do think there will be a lot of groundplay even if Demian can't get the conventional takedown on Chris, I still think he could bring the fight to the ground."

Joining Danaher in Weidman's corner on Saturday night will be head trainer Ray Longo and training partner Gian Villante. They've all had only about just over a week to help Weidman prepare for Maia.

For Villante's part, he's been channeling his inner-Demian Maia to assist in Weidman's preparations. As someone who has trained with Weidman day in and day out, Villante also thinks Weidman's workman-style could open up the possibility of recording a submission over the former BJJ world champion.

"I'm no Demian Maia in jiu-jitsu-wise, not even close," the Strikeforce light heavyweight Villante said with a laugh. "But I've seen him do some crazy, incredible tapouts to some high-level jiu-jitsu guys. You add in striking and a 15-minute fight, the relentless of it ... I'm not saying his jiu-jitsu is better than Demian Maia's but his jiu-jitsu is relentless. He's going to keep coming after him, move to move to move to move until he finally gets something."

On Thursday, Weidman spoke about his willingness to accept the risk of battling Maia for the submission.

"I have a lot of respect for Demian Maia's jiu-jitsu," Weidman said at the pre-fight press conference. "I think he's amazing. But ever since I got into MMA, my jiu-jitsu has been one of my main focal points. I'm competed in Abu Dhabi against the top-level grapplers in the world and I've done pretty well. I also train with some of the top guys in the world and I do pretty well. Based on that is what leads me to have the confidence to go on the ground and be confident there."
