Less than six months after Dominick Cruz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/dominick/cruz/1057/) defeated Urijah Faber (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/urijah/faber/959/) to vanquish his biggest rival and retain the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) bantamweight title, the champ can begin preparation for a rematch.

That's because on Tuesday, the UFC confirmed that the pair would coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter when the revamped series moves to its new home on FX.

The season, which will feature both lightweight and welterweight contestants, will begin airing on March 9, 2012, with a two-hour premiere.

Cruz (19-1) has solidified his stronghold as the 135-pound division's best fighter, capturing 10 straight fights overall. Most recently, he defeated Demetrious Johnson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/demetrious/johnson/1495/) by decision at October's UFC on Versus 6. But just prior to that, he beat Faber in a long-awaited rematch of their 2007 fight which remains the only loss on his record.

Cruz injured his hand in the Johnson fight but apparently will be ready to go by the springtime.

"This is a dream come true," Cruz said in a statement. "To get a chance to coach TUF and beat Faber again is all the motivation I need. This is going to be an insane season of The Ultimate Fighter."

The new season will air on Fridays for 13 weeks, with live fights on each episode. That would likely put a Cruz-Faber bout in June, about a year from their last match.

In that bout, Cruz won by scores of 50-45, 49-46 and 48-47 but Faber said afterward that he believed he did enough to earn the win. The Cruz victory puts them at 1-1 heading into a rubber match.

Faber is 26-5 overall and rebounded from his Cruz loss to beat Brian Bowles in a second-round submission at UFC 139, but despite his overall history of success, he's struggled recently in some big fights, going 0-4 in his last four title bouts.

Als sonnen coach is dan kunnen de gevechten niet meer tussen zijn betogen door gehouden worden daar is geen tijd meer voor. Dan wordt het echt een one man show!

Ultimate Fighter Cast Announced

FX and the UFC have announced the 32-fighter cast for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
The group is a relatively unknown bunch, although a few have been around the block: Myles Jury is a 9-0 veteran who has finished all nine of his opponents in the first round. He was on the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter but had to leave the house after suffering a serious knee injury. And James Krause, who fought twice in the WEC, is part of the cast as well.

The Ultimate Fighter has been radically overhauled for its 15th season, which will premiere on March 9 on FX. For the first time, the fights will be live, starting with a premiere episode with an unprecedented 16 live fights airing on one night. After that, the 16 winning fighters will move into the house and be divided into teams coached by Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz, and a fight or two a week will air live on FX every Friday night after that.

Dominick Cruz Looking to Keep It Nice and Professional on 'The Ultimate Fighter'

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz sure picked an interesting time to become a coach on The Ultimate Fighter. Not only does the position pit him opposite his fiercest rival -- former WEC champion Urijah Faber -- it also throws him into the reality show franchise’s first season of live television. If all that weren’t enough to think about, the show’s starting cast has already garnered headlines for including a fighter with a history as a gay porn actor.

But if you ask Cruz, he’ll tell you that that’s not a particularly important piece of personal history as far as he sees it. He’s more concerned with whether guys like Dakota Cochrane can fight, he told MMA Fighting recently, and he expects the other fighters on the show to approach it the same way.

"I don’t even really think about it, honestly," Cruz said. "He’s another guy on the show. I think that’s how everyone will see it."

For Cruz, the goal with all the fighters who fight their way into the house on the live premiere of the show this Friday night is the same, whether they’re among the ones he knows personally from the San Diego MMA scene or whether they’re total strangers.

"For me, it’s a personal thing to make these guys better," he said. "It’s about seeing what I can show them, seeing what I can give them to help the rest of their careers. It’s also about hopefully helping a guy from my team win a six-figure contract with the UFC. That’s what it’s all about for me, and that’s the only thing I’m thinking about."

As for his old foe and rival Faber, who he’s slated to meet for a third and, if you ask Cruz, hopefully final time, once the season is finished? They might have spent more time together lately than either would have liked, but that doesn’t mean Cruz finds the challenger’s company any more agreeable, he said.

"I’ve been around Faber a lot. But we’re both professionals. I don’t think we’re going to lose it and just start scrapping each other. We both know we’ve got a date July 7, and I’m prepared to fight him on that date and not before."

On TUF: Live, A Fishbowl Look at A Sensitive Issue

Believe it or not, Dakota Cochrane's story isn't unique in sports. Back in 2004, baseball's Cleveland Indians signed a Japanese pitcher named Kazuhito Tadano who had appeared as an actor in gay pornography during his college days before embarking on a professional career.

Like Cochrane, Tadano faced taunts, insults and scrutiny, and had his career affected by the revelation. Unlike Cochrane, Tadano faced much of it in private.

When TUF: Live begins on Friday night on FX, Cochrane will be faced with the prospect of living in a house for 13 weeks with 15 other athletes of varying backgrounds, belief systems, and dare we say it, prejudices. He will be taped nearly 24 hours a day, and any backlash he receives is likely to be broadcast to an audience of millions. "I don't know if I have 15 homophones here or 15 guys that can care less about it," UFC president Dana White said during a recent media day for the show. "I have no idea. Nobody has been talked to on the show. Nobody's [said], 'We have a very sensitive issue.' None of that's happened. We don't do that s---. Whatever happens in that house happens, and then I'm going to have to deal with it."

That approach is a risky one for an organization just months into the first year of a seven-year deal with FOX Sports, and one that has faced accusations of homophobic behavior in the past. In 2009, White himself used an offensive gay slur word. He later apologized.

On the other hand, how real would a "reality" show be if its participants were told to mind their behavior? The fact that they'll go in unwarned and uncensored will provide an unfettered look at attitudes towards homosexuality and sports in 2012. That makes TUF: Live an interesting social experiment.

Professional sports has never had an openly gay athlete. Cochrane isn't gay, but after appearing in gay pornography, is likely to face any bias and intolerance from prejudiced castmates as if he was. That could mean major controversy for the UFC and FX, who stuck to their guns in selecting Cochrane on the strength of his record and his personality.

"If I was afraid of this topic and afraid of this, it would have been real easy to snip him," White said. "He doesn't make it. He gets cut. I don't care. I'm not worried about what he did in the past. It doesn't affect me or the company or anything else. I'm sure there is going to be some issue. Maybe there are going to be some knuckleheads here who stay some stupid s--- to him. I'm not hiding from that either. It is what it is. But if I was someone in the gay community, I would think this is a good thing, not a bad thing."
The fact that the UFC offered him an opportunity may sound insignificant, but it's more than what many baseball teams could say about their dealings with Tadano, the Japanese pitcher.

According to published reports of the time, he was effectively blackballed by the Japanese league. A highly regarded collegiate pitcher with a fastball that could reach the mid-90s, he was expected to be a high first-round pick in the 2002 draft but ultimately went unselected. It was just prior to that draft when his involvement in the video surfaced, and teams suddenly lost interest in him, claiming a shoulder injury.

After being passed over in Japan, his past followed him to the US, where according to reports, teams including the Twins, Padres and Braves backed off after initially expressing interest in a deal. According to the Daily Yomiuri newspaper, a source within the New York Mets confirmed that team owner Fred Wilpon refused to sign him because "he was worried about the trouble it might cause."

Tadano eventually made it to the big leagues with the Indians -- the only team that offered him a contract -- though he only pitched in 15 games over two years before getting cut by the Oakland A's and eventually returning to Japan.

When Tadano joined the Indians, he addressed the team and told them of his past. Reportedly, his teammates were quite supportive of his courage to face the truth. But tellingly, he joked about the taunting and harassment that might come his way.

"I don't understand English, so it really doesn't matter," he said.

It won't be that way for Cochrane. Part of him is expecting it, as he told me during a recent interview. Everyone in the house is going to know about his past, and in a setting that's already emotionally charged because of the competition, any discriminatory attitudes are bound to come out.

"It shouldn't matter to anybody what somebody else does in their life, who they choose to be with, who they choose to spend their life with," White said. "It's none of your f---ing business. What you better be worried about is this dude's going to come kick your f---ing ass. So if you want to be the guy who's going to talk a lot of s--- and say goofy stuff like that, you're going to get your ass kicked on national television by the guy that you're talking about. The thing you better be worried about is his fighting abilities, because he's not coming in the house to f--- you. He's coming in the house to kick your ass."

TUF is always a fishbowl, us watching the pressure cooker unfold. This social experiment might show MMA to be a bit more enlightened than its critics claim or it might prove that when it comes to tolerance, like many other sports, we still have work to do. At least Cochrane got a chance, and that's a good sign. At least from this dialogue we know that when the time comes, and an openly gay fighter is deserving of the opportunity, he'll get it, and maybe we'll also have an idea of what he'll go through. And maybe it won't be any different than any other fighter. Maybe.

On TUF Live, Team Cruz Fighters Hope Despite Injury, Champ Remains Coach

A knee injury may have knocked Dominick Cruz out of his scheduled July 7 title defense, but his team on TUF Live hopes it doesn't knock him off the show.

Cruz's injury happened late last week, and on Monday, after getting an official diagnosis of a torn ACL, he passed along the news to his team. According to Team Cruz's James Vick, the UFC bantamweight champ was "clearly a little sad and depressed" in making the announcement, but ultimately positive, promising to return to his championship form.

But as far as his involvement on the show, that remains up in the air. The UFC has yet to announce if Cruz will finish out the season or be replaced, as has happened in the case of injured coaches in year past.To the fighters under his watch, there's no move necessary.

"I'll tell you what, they're going to have eight guys who are pretty upset if they try to change our coach," said Justin Lawrence (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/151663/justin-lawrence), who has quickly become the season favorite with a pair of knockouts thus far. "It's already been nine weeks, we've kind of made a bond with the coaching staff already, and they're kind of like family.

"We were very bummed when we heard about his knee," he continued. "He kind of felt like he let us down, and that's not the case at all. Being a high-level athlete like that, stuff is going to happen. The way that guy trains is just incredible. I'm surprised his body is still alive with the grinding he puts his body through.

Vick said he could identify with Cruz, having gone through a pair of surgeries for injuries, saying that as an athlete, it is "the most depressing time of your life."

"As far as him staying and coaching, there's no way we want anybody else but him," he said. "He's been here for 10 weeks now and he's a great coach, it's a great coaching staff. We're getting close to him like family almost, and there's no way that I would want anybody else but him to coach us."

Vick, who will be facing Joe Proctor on Friday night, said he learned a newer, more intense work ethic from Cruz. When he arrived in Las Vegas, he thought he was training harder than anyone else, but after a few days with Cruz, he said he learned to push to a new level. More than that, he said passing those kinds of mental and physical tests have confirmed his own belief in himself.

For Lawrence, it wasn't necessarily the new workload that comes as his best takeaway, but all the tips and tricks that come from someone with so much big-fight experience, along with the brain trust of his coaching staff.

Lawrence is set to face Michael Chiesa on Friday, and despite the fact that he and his team are unsure of whether Cruz will be in their corner as the team leader, they have their missions set.

"It makes me want to win this tournament even more, for him," Lawrence said. "I really want to put him on my back and get him a 'W' and try to beat Faber."
