UFC 141: Jimy Hettes Dominates Nam Phan

It's a perfect ten for Jimy Hettes: The young up-and-comer is now 10-0 in his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career after a dominant decision victory over Nam Phan (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nam/phan/1243/) at UFC 141 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+141/).

How dominant was Hettes? The scorecards were 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26 in favor of Hettes. This fight wasn't even close, and Hettes demonstrated that he's one of the most promising featherweights in the sport.

In the first round Hettes absolutely obliterated Phan: He took him down, mounted him and battered him with ground and pound, and when Phan escaped briefly to his feet, Hettes used a perfect judo throw to get Phan back on the ground and get right back on top of him. Hettes wasn't able to finish the fight despite getting into position for an arm bar, but Hettes clearly deserved to win the first round 10-8, or maybe even 10-7. It was that dominant.

The second round wasn't quite as dominant, but another round that clearly went to Hettes. He took Phan down and controlled him on the ground, and easily defended himself for the brief moment that Phan was in the dominant position. It was a solid 10-9 round for Hettes.

In the third round Hettes began to tire out, suggesting that his cardio could use improving, but he still dominated the final five minutes and cruised to an easy decision victory.

The loss drops Phan to 17-10 in his career. He has a place in the featherweight division, but that place is not near the top. Hettes, however, is for real: He's a future title contender.

Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko

Mayushenko (26-5) has won his last two fights since losing to Jon Jones in August 2010. Gustafsson (12-1) has won his last three fights and is coming off a TKO win against Matt Hamill.

Round 1: Gustafsson's size and reach advantage becomes evident right away as he moves to the center and extends a long left arm to gauge the distance. Matyushenko tries to jump in with a hook, but it's a long trip. Kick by Gustafsson, and Vladdy tries to use it to take him down, but to no avail. Good front kick by Gustafsson. Vladdy comes leaping in with a left hook and Gustafsson sticks him with a jab that catches him flush and drops him. Gustafsson jumps on him as Matyushenko rolls to his stomach and covers up. Referee Yves Lavigne has seen enough, and this one is over.

Alexander Gustafsson Knocks Out Vladimir Matyushenko

Alexander Gustafsson (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alexander/gustafsson/1139/) showed why so many people consider him one of the best young light heavyweights in the world on Friday night, knocking out Vladimir Matyushenko (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/vladimir/matyushenko/138/) in the first round of their UFC 141 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+141/) fight.

As Matyushenko was charging in, Gustafsson landed a perfect left jab that leveled Matyushenko, then pounced on him and landed several more punches on the ground before referee Yves Lavigne stepped in to stop the fight.

The fight lasted just 2 minutes, 13 seconds.

"He's a good fighter, I look up to him, but I got the knockout," Gustafsson said afterward. "It was a good punch. It was my day to day. It was my dream to fight in Las Vegas and it was the biggest win of my life."

The 24-year-old Gustafsson is now 13-1 in his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career, and he has a good chance of becoming a title contender in the light heavyweight division. Gustafsson has room to get bigger, stronger and better, but he's already plenty good. Matyushenko found that out the hard way.

Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks

Fitch (23-3) fought B.J. Penn to a majority draw at UFC 127 in February. Fitch has only lost once (against Georges St-Pierre) in the last eight years. Hendricks (11-1) won both his fights this year against T.J. Waldburger and Mike Pierce.

Round 1: Steve Mazzagatti starts us off, and no glove touch for these two. Fitch tries a little lunging right hand that comes up short. Hendricks comes forward and blasts him with a big left that stiffens Fitch up and drops him to his back. Hendricks jumps on him as Fitch sits up into another punch, and Mazzagatti steps in to stop it. That was quick. The kind of fight where they can show the whole thing rather than highlights. Hendricks parades around the Octagon with a wide grin showing through his beard. He looks just a little bit surprised, too.

Johny Hendricks def. Jon Fitch via TKO (punches) at 0:12 of round one

Johny Hendricks Knocks Out Jon Fitch

The unthinkable has happened: Jon Fitch (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/jon/fitch/339/) has been finished. And it took Johny Hendricks (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/johny/hendricks/947/) only 12 seconds to do it on Friday night at UFC 141 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+141/).

Hendricks landed a huge left hand to Fitch's jaw that had Fitch falling straight backward, with his head bouncing off the canvas. Hendricks pounced and landed one more huge punch on the ground before referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in to stop the fight.

It was a stunning upset victory voer Hendricks, who improves to 12-1 and earns by far the biggest win of his MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career.

"I have a left hand," Hendricks said. "Everybody's been counting me out. I knew if I hit him with it I could lay him out."

Fitch, who falls to 23-4-1, had never been finished in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc) and hadn't been finished in any promotion since 2002. Fitch has long been regarded as the No. 2 welterweight in the world behind Georges St. Pierre (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/georges/st-pierre/439/), but now there's a new kid on the block: Hendricks, who improves to 12-1, is for real.

Nate Diaz Beats Up Donald Cerrone at UFC 141

In the grudge match in the co-main event of UFC 141 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+141/), Nate Diaz (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/nate/diaz/538/) whipped Donald Cerrone (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/donald/cerrone/1076/) for 15 minutes, turning Cerrone's face into a bloody mess and easily winning a unanimous decision victory.

Cerrone and Diaz had been talking trash to each other in the run-up to the fight, had to be restrained from fighting each other at a pre-fight press conference this week, and declined to touch gloves before the fight, with Cerrone instead giving Diaz the finger. But once the opening bell rang, it was Diaz who did all the fighting.

In the first round Diaz brutalized Cerrone with high-volume punching, hitting Cerrone in the face again and again and again. By the middle of the round Cerrone's mouth was bleeding and he appeared to have trouble keeping it closed, as if he might have had a jaw injury. It was a dominant first round for Diaz.

Cerrone was better in the second round, changing up his approach to attack more with leg kicks and knocking Diaz off balance with trips and sweeps. However, Cerrone wasn't able to do much of anything when he succeeded in knocking Diaz down, and Cerrone still ate a lot of punches from Diaz. The second round was closer, but I still gave it to Diaz.

By the third round Diaz knew he was in command and was cruising with his high-volume punching, easily battering away at Cerrone and clinching the win. The only question in the final moments of the fight was whether there would be any type of ugly post-fight scene, but instead the men shook hands and hugged afterward, and shook hands again when the judges' scorecards were announced, with Diaz winning 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

The win improves Diaz's record to 15-7, and it was as good as he has looked in the Octagon, Cerrone, fighting for the fifth time in 2011, looked tired and worn down, and his record falls to 17-4. In the end, Diaz was classy as he walked out of the Octagon.

"I want to thank Donald Cerrone (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/donald/cerrone/1076/) for the fight," Diaz said. "Sorry about all the s--t that went down."

Alistair Overeem Sends Brock Lesnar Into Retirement at UFC 141

Alistair Overeem (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/alistair/overeem/808/) needed less than half of one round to win his first fight in the UFC (http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc), landing hard kicks and knees to Brock Lesnar (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/brock/lesnar/305/)'s body and winning a first-round technical knockout at UFC 141 (http://www.mmafighting.com/tag/UFC+141/).

Overeem landed a kick to the liver that knocked Lesnar down, then swarmed on him and landed punches on the ground until referee Mario Yamasaki stepped in to stop the fight. The bout lasted only two minutes, 26 seconds.

Afterward Lesnar, who has been battling diverticulitis over the last two years, said he would no longer compete in the UFC.

"My hat's off to Alistair Overeem," Lesnar said afterward. "I've had a difficult couple of years and I'm going to officially say tonight was the last time you're going to see me in the Octagon."

A former WWE star, Lesnar has enough money that he never has to work again, and it's no surprise that he doesn't feel the need to put his body through the rigors of an MMA (http://www.mmafighting.com/) career anymore.

As for Overeem, he was as good as advertised.

"Today was all about bad intentions -- first or second round, I promised," Overeem said afterward, referring to his pre-fight prediction that he would finish Lesnar in one or two rounds.

Lesnar, surprisingly, opened the fight by throwing a couple of leg kicks, and Overeem responded by throwing a looping right hand that missed. A minute into the first round Lesnar attempted a single-leg takedown, and Overeem shook him off. Overeem went on the attack and landed knees to Lesnar's body, while Lesnar landed a punch that opened a cut over Overeem's right eye.

But those attacks to Lesnar's body were all Overeem needed. Lesnar's striking defense just isn't good enough to handle the striking of a former K-1 champion like Overeem, who referred to his finishing shot as a "K-1 body kick.

Overeem, a former champion in Strikeforce (http://www.mmafighting.com/strikeforce/), Dream and K-1, will now face UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/junior/dos-santos/535/). That fight will determine who's at the top of a UFC heavyweight division that no longer includes Lesnar.

UFC 141 Bonuses: Diaz vs. Cerrone Earns Fight of Night Honors

Nate Diaz, Donald Cerrone and Johny Hendricks each walked out of UFC 141 Saturday night in Las Vegas $75,000 richer.

In the Fight of the Night, Diaz outboxed Cerrone through three rounds for a convincing decision win (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The fight was strictly a standup affair, with Diaz sticking to his rapid-fire boxing and Cerrone mixing in his Muay Thai kickboxing background.

While Diaz was the clear winner with his accurate punches, Cerrone drew excitement from the Vegas crowd every time he chopped Diaz to the floor with leg kicks.

Hendricks won Knockout of the Night with his 12-second finish over former title contender Fitch. Hendricks landed a big left hand to flatten Fitch and then followed with one more before referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in.

There were no submission finishes on the card. In the 10 fights, seven went to decisions while three ended in (T)KOs.

As He Rides Off Into Retirement, How Will the MMA World Remember Brock Lesnar?

LAS VEGAS -- He came, he fought, he left. After a career that spanned just shy of 55 months and only eight fights, Brock Lesnar is calling it quits. So he says. So he declared after a TKO loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 on Friday night.

If he changes his mind once his body and his ego have both healed up, he won't be the first. But if the 34-year-old former UFC heavyweight champ really has strapped on his last pair of 4XL gloves, what does his departure mean for the UFC and the sport of MMA? How will we remember Lesnar once we don't have the former WWE star to kick around anymore?

For UFC president Dana White, the answer probably has at least a little something to do with dollars and cents. Despite his inexperience in the cage, Lesnar immediately became one of the top pay-per-view draws for the organization after signing on in 2007. Whether it was because fans wanted to see him win or desperately hoped to see him lose, he put butts in seats and money in the bank for the UFC. He may not have always been the easiest guy for the UFC brass to work with, but he was a dependable cash cow.

And now, just like that, he's gone.

"I had no idea he was going to do that," White told reporters at the post-fight press conference. "Am I surprised? No. Brock Lesnar's made a lot of money in his career and he's achieved a lot of things. Brock Lesnar came to me one night here at the MGM and pulled me aside and said, 'I want to fight in the UFC.' I laughed. He was 1-0, came from the WWE, and he brought a lot of excitement to the heavyweight division. What that man accomplished in a short amount of time with one [prior] fight is amazing. I get it. It doesn't shock me, but I didn't know."

For the man who could turn out to be Lesnar's final opponent, the news seemed to come as more of a surprise, and maybe even a bit of disappointment.

"I think he shouldn't walk away, because love him or hate him, it's always something when Brock's fighting," Overeem said. "...He's a guy who goes for it. I think he achieved a lot in a short span, and it would be a shame if he stops now."

And yet, the Lesnar who got battered and beaten by Overeem didn't seem to be one who was burning up with an unquenchable competitive fire. He fought a reactive fight -- one devoid of the raw aggression he'd displayed in his earlier bouts. He never committed to getting Overeem to the mat, and a few well placed body shots sent him scurrying for cover. When Overeem whipped his shin across Lesnar's midsection, that was all it took to convince the former NCAA wrestling champ that it was time to cover up and go home, perhaps for the last time.

What does that ignominious end mean for Lesnar's legacy? Odds are it will only solidify the oft-repeated criticism that he never really got comfortable with being hit. When Lesnar was on offense, he was a juggernaut that mowed down everything in his path. But when an opponent managed to turn the tables he tended to shy away from the blows, going from attack mode to full retreat in a few seconds.

Some of that can be attributed to inexperience. After a pro debut against the thoroughly forgettable Min-Soo Kim, the bulk of Lesnar's MMA education took place on the job. He fought many of the best heavyweights around without the benefit of a gradual build-up or even much cage time in which to get comfortable. He was a star from the very beginning, and he was held to an almost impossibly high standard. He was also paid accordingly, making his relatively short stint in the UFC a highly profitable one.

But if he really is done with the sport, will Lesnar be remembered as a great heavyweight, or simply a memorable one? There's no denying his star-power, but did he accomplish enough to be known as anything more than a lightning rod with incredible athletic ability and raw physical potential?

It's difficult to say, in part because it's hard not to wonder what he might have accomplished had he not been laid low by diverticulitis at the height of his career. Instead of challenging Junior dos Santos earlier this year, Lesnar had to go under the knife to have 12 inches of his colon removed. It might not have had any bearing on his fight with Overeem, but his health struggles almost certainly influenced his decision to hang up the gloves when he did, and deprived him of precious time to carve out more of a fighting legacy for himself.

Lesnar was a man who came to MMA relatively late in life and now seems intent on leaving early. He was memorable, even if he fell short of true athletic greatness, and he brought mainstream attention to the sport at an important time in MMA's evolution.

Maybe when we look back on his brief career, that's what we'll remember most. Not that he dominated or even that he stuck around long enough to find out what he was fully capable of, but that he did a lot in a very little time, and he left the sport in better condition than he found it. Maybe that's enough for him to feel satisfied in retirement. Maybe it has to be. And sure, maybe all the money he made in the process doesn't hurt either.

Dana: Brock can retire, but he's under contract
By: Chris Palmquist
Source: The Underground
Dec 31, 2011 11:17 AM EST
At the UFC 141 post-fight press conference Dana White was asked about Brock Lesnar's retirement from MMA*following his loss to Alistair Overem.
The UFC's President response was simple: "When he retires, he retires under contract," White said.
What White most likely means is that Brock may or may not actually retire, but if he does, he still has a UFC*contract to honor, therefore would be unable to compete in any athletic event outside the UFC, and more in particular the WWE. It has been rumored that Vince MacMahon would love to have Lesnar back and even tried to negotiate an appearance at this past Wrestlemania.
The UFC is smart, and if Brock Lesnar is indeed retired,* you won't see him in any arena until his UFC contract is expired.

Brock brought UFC to the level it's at today, so you need to thank him for that.

UFC 141 'UFC Prelims' ratings: Final Spike TV special earns 1.8 million viewers (http://mmajunkie.com/news/26795/ufc-141-ufc-prelims-ratings-final-spike-tv-special-earns-1-8-million-viewers.mma)
The UFC and Spike TV's final "UFC Prelims" special ended on a high note and averaged a solid 1.8 million viewers, ranking it second all-time among the 26 specials to date.

The latest one-hour special coincided with this past weekend's UFC 141 event and featured Ross Pearson vs. Junior Assuncao and Danny Castillo vs. Anthony Njokuani.

MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com
(http://www.mmajunkie.com)) today confirmed the ratings information with industry sources.

UFC 141 took place this past Friday, Dec. 30, at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In addition to the one-hour "UFC Prelims" special, the main card aired on pay-per-view, and other prelims streamed on Facebook. Pearson won his fight via split decision, and Castillo won his bout via split decision.

Of the 26 "UFC Prelims" specials Spike TV has aired to date, UFC 141's ranks as the second best. The top-rated special came in early 2011 with UFC 126, which drew two million viewers.

The full list of "UFC Prelims" broadcasts and ratings as compiled by MMAjunkie.com includes:

1) UFC 126 (February 2011): 2 million viewers

27) UFC 125 (January 2011): 829,000*
28) UFC 140 (December 2011): 808,000*
29) UFC 127 (February 2011): 714,000*

* - Aired on ION Television, not Spike TV

The UFC first offered a PPV teaser broadcast for UFC 103, when the UFC went head-to-head on Spike TV with a boxing PPV broadcast featuring Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. The specials proved effective enough at generating last-minute PPV buys that officials from the UFC and the organization's longtime cable partner decided to make them a regular offering.

However, due to the UFC's new deal with FOX, the prelims specials are moving to FX and FUEL TV this year.

De PPV-cijfers van de maincard zullen ook snel volgen denk ik.

Dat beest lijkt wel wat op Brock dus ik denk dat hij zijn take-down defense er mee geoefend heeft.
