De kracht van JDS is naar mijn mening niet zozeer zijn bokswerk (inderdaad goed voor een MMA'er maar zeker geen topbokser) maar zijn op boksen gebaseerde verplaatsing/ positioneringstrategie. JDS is erg goed in buiten de reach van de tegenstander te blijven, snel instappen om een korte aanval te zetten en vervolgens weer de veiligheid te zoeken. Hij blijft verplaatsen onder het stoten en kan bovendien ook achteruit vechten.

Overeems verplaatsingen lijken meer op langzaam naar voren schuivelen en geven hem tactisch een achterstand. Je moet tenslotten eerst een goede positie hebben wil je een winnende aanval kunnen inzetten. Doordat JDS veel in en uit beweegt is het voor Overeem moeilijk een goed geplaatste lowkick te geven, laat staan te clichen / knieen.

JDS houdt van het geven van een opstoot. Overeem heeft het nadeel dat hij, door zijn spierbouw, zijn armen niet kan sluiten en een opstoot alleen kan weren door of zijn armen te laten zakken of zijn lichaam ver in te draaien. Beiden niet optimaal tegen een snelle tegenstander.

Ik gok dat JDS gaat winnen op KO voordat de helft van de wedstrijd voorbij is.

alistair kan dit alleen winnen wanneer hij naar de grondt gaat met santos,

Denk dat dit de beste strategie is. Hij is onnoemelijk veel sterker en kan dat op de grond goed gebruiken.
Anderzijds is JDS wel tricky omdat hij zo snel en slippery is( positie switch ).

Overeem heeft wel kansen maar dan zal hij z`n handen hoger moeten houden dan in z`n partij tegen Brock.Als hij z`n handen weer zo laag houd krijgt hij klappen die niet goed voor hem zijn!

Ik weet het niet zo hoor! We weten dat Dos Santos bommen weet te vangen, en we weten dat Overeem dat niet kan.
En tegen Werdum deed Overeem het staand ook niet echt 100%, Werdum heeft em outstriked, als ie dat doet tegen Dos Santos heeft ie een heel groot probleem.

Doe ff een research op deze zin. Alles heeft een rede. AO had een grote teen en of rib blessure.
En natuurlijk kon AO niet gaan kickboxen tegen Werdum, dan had ie meteen gelegen, dit maakt je onzeker in je spel, terwijl de fans iets heel anders verwachtten. Werdum kreeg geen kans op de grond van AO. Dus geen van beide top in hun eigen game. Saaie pot dus. Hoeveel hebben we er daar al niet van gezien.
Als je Werdum in K1 had gezet was ie binnen de eerste ronde KO gegaan. Get it? ;)

Persoonlijk denk ik dat AO zich wel zal voorbereiden op weer een totaal andere tegenstander. Hoe? daar ben ik niet voor, maar zijn trainers.

Tegen Brock waren die handen zo laag om een eventuele shoot op te vangen en wat stoten betreft was Ali's headmovement goed genoeg om ze te ontwijken en wachten tot een clinchmoment. De rest is history. :D

Ik vind AO juist meer geduld hebben de laatste jaren, kijkt veel beter en alles met precisie. Zijn stoten, clinch, knie L en hoeken combo is gruwelijk.

Ik zit weer al m'n V-Cash in op AO.

Apart dat mensen in de UFC HW hype blijven geloven.
Tot nu toe laten de voormalige SF HW niks heel van die UFC HW's, en dat verbaast me werkelijk helemaal niks.
JDS en Cain is nu alle hoop gevestigd, en hun record is nou niet echt overtuigend imho.
JDS had het een stuk moeilijker tegen Nelson dan Werdum.
Hetzelfde geld voor Cain tegen Brock dan Overeem vs Brock.
Maarja het zal wel, JDS gaat Overeem keihard K.O. slaan en dat baseer ik op gebakken lucht.

Zeggen dat Overeem minder moeite had dan Brock dan Cain vind ik een beetje raar. Beide maakten gehakt van hem. Ben het wel met je eens dat de Strikeforce HW's in het algemeen beter waren dan die van de UFC.

Edson Barboza vs. Evan Dunham Slated for UFC 146

A lightweight tilt with ‘Fight of the Night' potential has been added to the UFC's Memorial Day weekend fight card.
Announced Sunday, undefeated striker Edson Barboza has agreed to meet revitalized brawler Evan Dunham at UFC 146, scheduled for May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout via Twitter.

The holiday card is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight title scrap between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. Jason "Mayhem" Miller returns to the cage against C.B. Dollaway in the night's only other confirmed match-up.

Barboza (10-0) rides into the contest on a wave of momentum from his ridiculous third-round spinning wheel kick knockout of Terry Etim that earned both ‘Fight of the Night' and ‘Knockout of the Night' honors at UFC 142. The impressive 26-year-old is now 4-0 in his short UFC career, with wins over Ross Pearson, Anthony Njokuani, and Mike Lullo, along with four ‘Fight Night' bonuses to his credit.

Dan Hardy to Meet Duane 'Bang' Ludwig at UFC 146

In what will more than likely be a standup fight, Duane "Bang" Ludwig is slated to meet Dan Hardy at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas, the UFC confirmed Wednesday.

Two welterweights with weaknesses on the floor and a strong preference to keep the fight standing, Ludwig and Hardy are both looking to get back on the winning track after coming off submission losses to Josh Neer and Chris Lytle, respectively.

Ludwig was recently seen in a loss to Neer by guillotine choke at the UFC on FX event on Jan. 20, putting a stop to Ludwig's momentum after two straight wins and the recognition of holding the UFC's fastest knockout.

Hardy has not won a fight since November 2009 and is riding a four-fight losing streak. Despite the skid, he's kept his job due to his gameness as a fighter.

UFC 146 will likely be headlined by a heavyweight title bout between champion Junior dos Santos and challenger Alistair Overeem.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane Del Rosario Leads Additions to UFC 146 Card

The UFC 146 card continues to take shape with the addition of several matches on Wednesday. The Memorial Day weekend event will take place in its traditional home of Las Vegas, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 26.

Among the bouts announced is one including the arrival of unbeaten former Strikeforce heavyweight Shane Del Rosario, who hasn't fought since last February after suffering major injuries during an April 2011 car accident. Del Rosario (11-0) will face Gabriel Gonzaga (13-6).

Also making his UFC debut during the event will be veteran light-heavyweight Glover Teixeira, who has been considered one of the best 205-pounders outside of Zuffa for several years. Teixeira had previously been wooed by the UFC, only to see his octagon hopes dashed by visa problems that have finally been solved.

Teixeira (17-2) is set to square off with Kyle Kingsbury. The AKA product recently had a four-fight win streak snapped in a decision loss to Stephan Bonnar.

In a featherweight bout, recent Ultimate Fighter season 14 winner Diego Brandao (14-7) will battle Darren Elkins (13-2). Brandao is coming off a comeback submission win over Dennis Bermundez in December, while Elkins is riding a two-fight win streak, with victories over Michihiro Omigawa and Zhang Tiequan.

Finally, Jacob Volkmann will put his five-fight win streak on the line against undefeated British submission artist Paul Sass (12-0).

UFC 146 is likely to feature a heavyweight championship main event with titleholder Junior dos Santos looking to defend against Alistair Overeem, although that fight has not yet been officially announced by the promotion.

After months of speculation, Junior dos Santos' first title defense has finally been made official. The UFC's newest heavyweight champion will meet former Strikeforce, DREAM, and K-1 beltholder Alistair Overeem at the main event of UFC 146, slated for May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Antonio Silva's long-awaited Octagon debut is finally on the books.

Announced Wednesday, "Bigfoot" has agreed to face Roy "Big Country" Nelson in a heavyweight tilt at UFC 146, slated for May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. UFC officials confirmed the bout via Twitter.

Silva and Nelson join their heavyweight brethren on the Memorial Day weekend card, which is headlined by a mammoth title scrap between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. Notable fan-favorites Dan Hardy, Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Edson Barboza, and Diego Brandao are also confirmed participants.

UFC 146: Frank Mir vs. Cain Velasquez Set to Determine No. 1 Contender

UFC 146 already boasts a UFC heavyweight championship match, and now it will determine the No. 1 contender, too.

A long-rumored bout between Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez has finally been agreed to, and according to FoxSports.com, the victor will face the winner of the night's main event pitting Junior Dos Santos against Alistair Overeem.

Mir (16-5) will walk into the octagon with the more momentum of the pair, riding a three-fight win streak. In his most recent bout, he earned a technical submission win over Antonio Rodrigo Noegueira at 140. Prior to that he had wins over Roy Nelson and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

Velasquez, meanwhile, will be hoping to rebound from his first career loss, dropping the belt to dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1 last November.

The early line on the fight has Velasquez as a 4-to-1 favorite, likely because his wrestling should allow him to determine the location of the fight, thereby limiting Mir's submission opportunities.

UFC 146 takes place on May 26 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Aside from the two aforementioned bouts, other fights include Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva, Jason "Mayhem" Miller vs. C.B. Dollaway and Dan Hardy vs. Duane Ludwig.

Als allistar zijn kin goed weet te beschremen en de clinch aan gaat hoeft ie maar een paar goede knieen te geven en is het gebeurd kijk het verschil in gewicht en hoe massive allistar is. Als je filmpjes terug kijkt van sparring partners die vonden het niet normaal hoe sterk hij is. Ik denk dat allistar nog steeds onderschat wordt en JDS overschat.
Daarbij denk ik dat allistar zijn kin prima is als je naar zijn k1 partij kijkt tegen spong. Ik denk gewoon dat JDS ko gaat en flink ook.

Denk dat JdS ook niet vaak tegenover iemand van het kaliber Overeem heeft gestaan, we zullen het zien, maar een stoot of knie van Overeem zal JdS ook niet prettig vinden :)

Het gaat natuurlijk ook nog om spierkracht, techniek, snelheid en de impact van de klap, je kan natuurlijk ook recht in een flinke mep lopen als jezelf wil stoten. Of dit nu met MMA-gloves of boks-handschoenen gebeurt maakt dus weinig verschil. Ik denk wel dat het afhangt wie de test doet een Bas Rutten die dit in het filmpje te zien is is skilled in beiden. Maar een typische kickbokser met een ongeloflijke stootkracht als Zimmerman of een Mighty Mo zou bijv. hele andere resultaten opleveren in zo'n test. Wel interessant trouwens. Tnx voor het filmpje.

Om weer on topic te gaan. Ik weet haast wel zeker dat JDS in zijn broek poept voor zijn aankomende tegenstander. Ik verwacht een hit & (backwards)run taktiek van JDS met als uiteindelijke winnaar Overeem die JDS uiteindelijk bij zijn lurven pakt en hem ala Brett Rogers door de Octagon heengooit met een knetterharde GnP KO in ronde 2

Doe ff een research op deze zin. Alles heeft een rede. AO had een grote teen en of rib blessure.
En natuurlijk kon AO niet gaan kickboxen tegen Werdum, dan had ie meteen gelegen, dit maakt je onzeker in je spel, terwijl de fans iets heel anders verwachtten. Werdum kreeg geen kans op de grond van AO. Dus geen van beide top in hun eigen game. Saaie pot dus. Hoeveel hebben we er daar al niet van gezien.
Als je Werdum in K1 had gezet was ie binnen de eerste ronde KO gegaan. Get it? ;)

Persoonlijk denk ik dat AO zich wel zal voorbereiden op weer een totaal andere tegenstander. Hoe? daar ben ik niet voor, maar zijn trainers.

Tegen Brock waren die handen zo laag om een eventuele shoot op te vangen en wat stoten betreft was Ali's headmovement goed genoeg om ze te ontwijken en wachten tot een clinchmoment. De rest is history. :D

Ik vind AO juist meer geduld hebben de laatste jaren, kijkt veel beter en alles met precisie. Zijn stoten, clinch, knie L en hoeken combo is gruwelijk.

Ik zit weer al m'n V-Cash in op AO. x2

Ik ben hier niet zo blij mee eigenlijk, ik gun het ze allebei, of Struve by sub of Hunt by KO. Het zou me allebei niet blij maken.

Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve Rounds Out UFC 146's All-Heavyweight Main Card

The UFC's Memorial Day weekend heavyweight extravaganza just got a little bigger.

Revitalized bruiser Mark Hunt and Dutch knockout artist Stefan Struve have agreed to meet at UFC 146, slated for May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. UFC officials confirmed the match-up on Wednesday morning, which was first reported by Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole.

The contest rounds out an all heavyweight main card, featuring a title bout, Junior Dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem, a number-one contenders match, Cain Velasquez vs. Frank Mir, and a pair of barnburners, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva vs. Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane del Rosario. UFC mainstays Dan Hardy, Jason "Mayhem" Miller, and Diego Brandao also highlight the undercard.

Hunt (8-7) returns with his first win streak since 2006 in tow, after blazing through upset victories over Chris Tuchscherer, Ben Rothwell and Cheick Kongo. Ik hoop zo dat Struve z'n reach goed gebruikt nu. Die hunt laat een dekking foutje echt niet onbenut. Dus kalm blijven en op asftand houden, hopen op een sub.

Ik ben voor Struve in deze hoor. Hunt prima gozer, maar Struve is toch wel eentje waarvoor ik altijd 'root' =)

Toch denk ik dat Stuve deze wel eens zou kunnen winnen. Natuurlijk heeft Hunt een dodelijke klauw en Struve een suspected chin maar Struve is ook de slimmere vechter met de gigantische lengte en reach-voordeel. Het zal denk ik een ronde of 2 achteruitlopen worden voor hem met een aantal bekeken trappen en punches waarna die hem tegen de grond werkt en hem als een Anaconda opvouwt, wurgt en inslikt.

Kongo had ook een reach advantage van (volgensmij) 8 inch. Maar die stoot van Hunt op Kongo zat er toch lekker op, goed getimed. Stefan heeft 10 inch reach en trapt hopenlijk de benen onder Hunt uit. Ik denk ook Struve op Triangle of Armbar round 2.

denk ook dat als AO een goede kans wil maken, met hem moet gaan kickboksen en veel met hem gaan worstelen, net als hij bji paul buentello deed. Als hij het alleen een staande partij tegen Dos santos van gaat maken, dan gaat hij het niet redden. Vroeg of laat ga je. Z'n boksen, snelheid, stamina en kin is gewoon beter. Blijven kickboksen, veel lowkicks en voor de take downs. Als hij geen brawl met dos santos aangaat en z'n conditie optimaal is om 5x5 vol te houden dan maakt hij een kans.

Partij van Overeem is zo moeilijk te voorspellen. Is maar niet wie elkaar het eerst goed raakt denk ik bij deze twee. Gun het ze allebei maar zou toch graag zien dat Overeem de belt pakt.

x2, Ik neem aan dat wanneer je een partij aangaat je moet denken in de zin van "leven en dood", en je dus doet waar je denkt je tegenstander mee te kunnen verslaan. Dan moet Struve dus niet gaan staan met Hunt. Ik denk dat dit een lastige wordt voor Struve tenzij hij hem snel take downt. Ik denk dat Overeem al trappend en evt clinchend met knieen vrij makkelijk wint.

“I think it’s the ultimate test for my striking,” said dos Santos, who has publicly contemplated an Olympic boxing bid for 2016. “It’s still the biggest challenge. He was a K-1 champion, which is the greatest striking event in the world. He’s a very strong guy, good, but I trust in myself a lot and I try for the knockout in all of my fights. Regardless of him being a striker or not, I’m going for the knockout.”

Of course, like any good champion, dos Santos has a backup plan to surprise the Dutchman.

“Jiu-jitsu can be Plan B. I’m an MMA fighter, training in everything,” dos Santos said. “I’m well prepared to fight, whether standing or on the ground, and if I find it necessary to take it to the ground, it will happen.”

Despite training alongside ground wizards the Nogueira brothers, grappling hasn’t been easy for dos Santos. After taking the belt from Velasquez in November, Cigano underwent knee surgery, which delayed his return to jiu-jitsu training. Now, however, all is well and the champ expect to be at full strength when he takes on Overeem at the end of May.

“The preparation has already begun. I’m training hard for the fight, feeling well. Now is the time to get strong, to then endure the hard training and get to 100 percent for the fight,” explained dos Santos.

Recently, dos Santos received some praise from an unlikely source. Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Chael-Sonnen-4112), known for his controversial comments about Brazilians, named the heavyweight as a Brazilian who he admires in MMA.

“I was surprised, because he speaks ill of Brazilians and now names me as a favorite,” said dos Santos. “For me, it’s strategy, and if it’s working, I think he really has to do it. His focus is Anderson [Silva], but if I serve as inspiration or anything else, if I help him with anything, good for him and thanks for appreciating my work.”

Dos Santos’ teammate, heavyweight Antonio Silva (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Antonio-Silva-12354), recently signed with the UFC and will also compete at UFC 146 against Roy Nelson (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Roy-Nelson-10249). Ik denk en hoop dat Overeem zijn benen flinkt gaat bewerken met zijn snoeiharde lowkicks. En in de clinch is Overeem natuurlijk beresterk.

Lijkt me nog iets te hoog gegrepen, ik weet het mma is geen wiskunde maar kijk hoe Big foot was tegen Fedor, van de andere kant was hij minder tegen cormier, misschien toch onderschat? Verschillende style van vechters maakt de wedstrijd. Cormier was niet zo dominant tegen Monson dan dat Fedor was. Kortom je kunt er niks voorspellen:P

Allistair zal in ieder geval met een goed plan moeten komen en ook een plan B moeten hebben mochten hij en z'n trainers doorkrijgen dat het niet werkt/hij daarmee kwetsbaar is.

Dos Santos heeft in weinig partijen veel op de grond gewerkt, dus moeilijk in te schatten wat hij daar kan. Staand is hij in ieder geval ijzersterk, maar dat is allistair ook.

Dit kan wel eens een heel snelle ko worden, met 60% kans voor allistair.

UFC 146 Combatants Face Surprise Drug Tests Following Press Conference

The Nevada state athletic commission took advantage of a Tuesday pre-fight press conference held within state lines, electing to order surprise drug tests for all six fighters who appeared at the UFC 146 event in Las Vegas.

The testing was done following its conclusion, NSAC executive director Keith Kizer told MMA Fighting, confirming a tweet by Ron Kruck of "Inside MMA."

Kizer said it was the first time the commission had screened multiple participants of a mixed martial arts event during a press conference so far ahead of time, though they had done the same in July for a championship boxing match scheduled to take place in August between Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko.

"We brought the drug test to them instead of making them go to the drug test," Kizer said. "If they were not in Las Vegas, I would need to find them a lab, which is of course, much more of a hassle."

The six fighters tested were UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, challenger Alistair Overeem, former champs Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir, and Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva.

The test counts as one of the two random draws Overeem must submit himself to after a hearing with the commission last December. That meeting was necessary after Overeem took six days to submit to a requested drug test while moving from Nevada to Holland, and Overeem agreed to the stipulation in order to go forward with his UFC 141 fight against Brock Lesnar, which he won via first-round TKO.

NSAC has long had the ability to test fighters out of competition, but only recently gained extra funding to implement it after a bill was signed into law by Gov. Brian Sandoval to increase department revenue.

According to Kizer, the commission currently has a deal in place with Quest Diagnostics which allows the lab to send testers on-site to obtain samples. After the conclusion of the UFC 146 press conference, the fighters were taken in groups of two to an MGM Grand VIP lounge to submit their sample.

Kizer could not say when the results would be made available, saying they may not be publicly released until after the event's May 26 completion. Of course, that would likely change if any of the tests came back positive and put one of the night's big fights into jeopardy.

Dana White Believes Current UFC Heavyweights Match Up With PRIDE Heyday

Leave it to Frank Mir to bluntly answer a question that's been asked ad nauseum. Since the announcement of UFC 146's all-heavyweight main card, many have wondered what exactly it says about us that we seem to care more about MMA's biggest than any other weight class.

The former UFC champ addressed that question on Tuesday at a press conference to promote the event. Using the bantamweight division as an example, Mir said that a lighter weight fighter could be the best at his division, but that doesn't mean he has the total respect of everyone watching. Human nature being what it is, some will inevitably walk away with a twinge of doubt.

"I think a lot of people, when they're watching the fights, in the back of their mind, they kind of feel like, 'I'm 220. Even though he knows how to fight, I can probably kick his ass,'" Mir said. "We’re the heavyweights. If you’re thinking that, you’re stupid."
As a result, you have relevant fights that are likely to capture the public's attention. From the estimation of UFC president Dana White, it's the strongest division the promotion has ever boasted. In fact, he said, it may even come close to equaling PRIDE at its best.

"Their heavyweight division was awesome," he said. "That's where a lot of legends were built, over there. Absolutely, I think that's where our heavyweight division is finally getting, and the division has been great and stacked for a few years now."

UFC 146's 10 fights feature 2,539.5 pounds of heavyweight monster, those numbers coming at last count of the most recent weigh-ins. While the event booking might be seen as an advertising gimmick, it's at least a good one, with a championship on the line as well as a near-certain reshuffling of the top 10 based upon the night's outcomes.

But what does it say about the future of the UFC's biggest weight class that the smallest of the 10 heavyweights scheduled to populate the main card is the division's champion?

Two-hundred-thirty-nine pound Junior Dos Santos reigns over the land formerly controlled by giants like Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, who threatened to run the lighter, more agile fighters out of the division. At least for now. The rest of the story will be told on May 26, when the MGM Grand reinforces its famous buffet for the event's arrival.

The night's key matchups will no doubt rock the boat one way or the other. Aside from Dos Santos' first title defense against Alistair Overeem, Mir faces Cain Velasquez in the former champ's first fight back since losing his belt.

Velasquez admitted that his defeat was the first time he'd suffered a loss in competition since wrestling in the NCAA collegiate championship tournament way back in 2006. That means he's been living in a foreign world for the last few months, attempting to rebound into the win column rather than continuing on the momentum he had built for himself.

To hear him tell it, he's been able to draw upon those experiences to help him move forward after this more recent setback.

"It's not difficult, no," he said. "I love what I do. In wrestling, you have a loss, it's not the end of world. You have to come back stronger, be healthy, watch film and see what you did wrong. Learn from your mistakes. You can't dwell on that kind of stuff. You have to move forward and try to get better."

That's the same thing the UFC did with its biggest division, which went through some lean times a few years ago. In the years since, talent has been added, most recently bolstered by the arrival of the Strikeforce heavyweights. It's an improvement that's been welcome by even the old guard. As Mir explained, it's for the benefit of all.

"Back in the day, the fights got spread out a bit farther because there wasn't as many guys to match up against. Anytime you're trying make a run towards the title, the worst thing in the world is to get an opponent, that when you tell people you're fighting him, they ask who that is. At least now, we don't have that issue. Almost everyone in the top 10 of the UFC is a household name, recognizable, and that makes it much more pleasurable to train and fight. There’s always a risk when you walk in the octagon, I’d rather take that risk against someone who's considered dangerous than take that risk against an unknown."

Cain Velasquez Picking Junior dos Santos to Beat Alistair Overeem at UFC 146

Though Cain Velasquez has his own fight to worry about at UFC 146, he has no trouble admitting that he’ll be keeping a close eye on the main event bout that pits challenger Alistair Overeem against current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos. As Velasquez told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, this is one fight where he’ll be openly rooting for the man who took his belt with a first-round knockout back in November.

"I’m hoping dos Santos wins, because I definitely would love a rematch with him," Velasquez said, adding, "I think he will. He’s an athletic guy. His boxing is really good."

Velasquez found out how effective dos Santos’ boxing was when he caught a right hand behind the ear in the first minute of their title fight at the first UFC on FOX event. Though the fight was over quickly, he still thinks he "could have attacked more," or at least done a better job of staying out of the Brazilian’s punching range.

"You learn from it," he said. "You take it to your next fight, and you don’t do it again."

As for how he thinks dos Santos matches up with the former Strikeforce heavyweight champ, Velasquez admitted it’s a tough match-up for both men.

"I think in the clinch and in the distance -- obviously the kicking range -- Overeem will have a better shot. But in the punching range, dos Santos can win the fight whenever."

According to Velasquez, there’s plenty at stake in his fight, too. UFC officials have told him that the winner of his main card bout against Frank Mir will get a crack at the UFC heavyweight title, he said. That means all he has to do is get through a fellow former champ -- one who’s on a three-fight winning streak in the UFC, no less -- and hope that dos Santos retains his title in order to set up the rematch he’s been hoping for.

But as he prepares for this fight, things haven’t exactly been harmonious back home in the American Kickboxing Academy. Though Velasquez is doing his best to stay out of it, the departure of former AKA welterweight Josh Koscheck made headlines recently, especially when he criticized AKA head trainer Javier Mendez on his way out the door, saying: "If you had real coaching, you would have seen a lot more champions out of that gym. I think that now, in my career, we're going to see big improvements really quick."

Velasquez said he’s done his best to avoid reading or hearing about the beef between Koscheck and Mendez, though he does hope the two can patch things up at some point.

"The tension is between [Koscheck] and Javier. If they have the time to sort it out, they need to. But my relationship with Javier isn’t going to change, and my relationship with Koscheck isn’t going to change. He’s still a friend of mine. ...He’s a friend of mine, and Javier’s obviously my top coach. That’s just the way it is. I don’t get involved in other people’s business."

The AKA team had a reason to pull together recently, when light heavyweight Mo Lawal was battling a serious staph infection following knee surgery in January. Lawal recounted how touched he was by the outpouring of support from his teammates, which Velasquez said is indicative of the kind of fighters AKA attracts.

"Generally, everybody in the gym is a good person, regardless of what kind of exterior they show in the media and everything else. You sit down, you talk with these guys, you train with these guys, they’re all good people."

Niet zo gek dat Cain het in het midden laat. Dit gevecht is echt een dubbeltje op zijn kant. Volgens mij gaat het echt om wie de beste dag op dat moment heeft. Bij Brock durfde ik het makkelijk te voorspellen, maar nu is het echt een kwestie van afwachten. Ik wil niet meer wachten :D.

Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer today told MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (www.mmajunkie.com) the No. 1 heavyweight contender failed a pre-fight drug test conducted this past Tuesday following a press conference for UFC 146.

Overeem's "A" sample was flagged for an elevated T/E ratio that exeeded 10-to-1, well over the 6-to-1 limit. Kizer said the heavyweight has the right to request the test's "B" sample, which, if negative, would make him eligible to receive a fight license.

The former Strikeforce champion was among six top-billed fighters who were tested for the all-heavyweight pay-per-view event, which takes place May 26 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. All were tested for diuretics, masking agents, anabolic steroids and T/E ratios in addition to drugs of abuse.

Dos Santos, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva all passed their tests.

It's not the first time Overeem has run afoul of the NSAC. He was granted a conditional license to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 after missing a pre-fight drug test ordered by the commission, which reinstated out-of-competition testing this past July.

Answering to the commission via telephone during an NSAC hearing held three weeks prior to UFC 141, Overeem said he missed the test because he had flown back to his native Holland to care for his ailing mother and wasn't made aware of the obligation. When he got word, he submitted an invalid blood test conducted by his personal doctor and then submitted urine that wasn't tested.

The NSAC gave him a license on the condition that he submit to a drug test conducted by an accredited laboratory, which he did two days later (and subsequently passed), as well as pass a drug test upon arriving in the U.S. for the Lesnar fight and submit to two random tests.

This past Tuesday's test served as one of those random tests, which also followed a fight-night test at UFC 141.

Because Overeem's conditional license expired on Dec. 31, the NSAC will not receive a disciplinary complaint against him as it does for licensed athletes. Instead, he will need to appear before the commission should he choose to apply for a license, which notably, hadn't been filed for UFC 146.

With one half of May 26's event on the shelf, the UFC may give one of the main-card heavyweights an impromptu title shot.

Dana White: Frank Mir vs. Cain Velasquez 'Will Happen'

Frank Mir may have been the odds-on favorite to replace Alistair Overeem opposite Junior dos Santos at UFC 146, but according to UFC President Dana White, the promotion has decided to look elsewhere to solve their heavyweight dilemma.

"Mir vs. Cain (Velasquez) will happen," White revealed via Twitter early this morning, referring to UFC 146's co-main event, a No. 1 contender's match between Mir and former champion Cain Velasquez.

Mir was the first to cast his hat into the ring upon the announcement of Overeem's failed drug test, releasing a press release via his management just hours after the UFC 146 title bout was thrown into jeopardy.

"I would be excited if given the opportunity to compete for the UFC's heavyweight title at UFC 146 if the reports released earlier today regarding Alistair Overeem failing his 'A' sample drug test are true," Mir stated.

"I have been fortunate to be able to fight in the UFC for more than a decade, and it is a dream of mine to become the first three-time heavyweight champion in the UFC. Being able to fight Junior Dos Santos would put me one step closer to that dream."

Despite Mir now being removed from the table, and Fedor Emelianenko officially busy in Russia, the UFC's options remain plentiful. A fan-driven campaign for Mark Hunt to receive the title shot has generated the most momentum, as fight fans have over-flooded the UFC's various social media outlets with calls for the Samoan via the #RallyForMarkHunt hashtag.

Additionally, Fabricio Werdum and both of Strikeforce's grand prix finalists -- Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier -- have heard their names mentioned in the discussions. However Werdum is currently slated to fight Mike Russow inside his home country of Brazil at UFC 147, and Strikeforce officials would likely be hesitant to cancel a tournament finals a year in the making.

Nevertheless, one surprise name did arise on Friday afternoon. When asked by a fan if he would be open to fighting dos Santos, 41-year-old former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson aptly responded, "For sure."

"Hendo" fought at heavyweight just once in his professional career, defeating Emelianenko via first-round TKO back in July of 2011. He tipped the scales at 207 pounds for the match-up. Henderson is currently scheduled to receive the next available title shot at middleweight or light heavyweight after edging Shogun Rua in UFC 139's legendary main event.

The UFC has always prided itself on keeping its ear to the pulse of the fans. In the coming weeks, we're about to see just how far that dedication goes.
Following the announcement of Alistair Overeem's failed drug test, a new surprise candidate for UFC 146's title shot has emerged. Led by a burgeoning #RallyForMarkHunt crusade that shows no sign of slowing, former K-1 champion Mark Hunt and his ‘Army of Doom' have besieged the MMA community, bombing the social networks of Dana White, Lorenzo Feritta, and anyone else with a say in the UFC's decision making process, in the hopes of awarding "Super Samoan" a shot at the UFC heavyweight strap.

"That's what the army does. They terrorize," Hunt laughed on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "It's an honor for me to have such loyal fans. It's great. I feel like I'm very appreciated."

Initially awarded a UFC fight against Sean McCorkle because of a unsettled contract formality, Hunt's entrance to the Octagon was less than glorious. But he has since thundered through a stunning three-fight win streak, which was violently punctuated by a first-round knockout over Cheick Kongo at UFC 144.

Now what was first just a pipe dream, has become a very real discussion, and Hunt is just as surprised as anybody.
"I think people like to see an underdog in there," he said with a chuckle. "I wasn't even wanted in the UFC, put it that way. And here we are talking about me having a title shot. Two years ago you'd have laughed at the thought. I think people like to see a good Rocky story."

While not knowing which opponent to prepare for would be an uncomfortable spot for most fighters, Hunt has never been much of a stickler for the details. And after hitting one of a largest waves of momentum and popularity of his professional career at the spry age of 38, he's having too much fun right now to not enjoy the ride.

So regardless of the outcome, Hunt is sure about one thing -- he's going to work on May 26, 2012. Whether it's against Junior dos Santos or Stefan Struve is irrelevant until those cage doors swing shut.

"I just train to make myself better. I don't really care about the opponent that I'm fighting," Hunt mused.

"I match-up good against anyone, so of course I feel like I match-up good against (dos Santos). The people that think I don't have a chance against anybody on this planet, they are certainly mistaken. But it's good to be underestimated. I like to be the underdog. (People say) I don't have a chance. That's great, it gives me more drive, more fire."

Not surprisingly, Hunt's easy-going outlook also extends to the subject that started this entire debate. As the conversation turns to Overeem's failed 14:1 drug test and the growing TRT discussion in MMA, the Samoan's words drip with a comical mixture of confidence and indifference.

"Honestly I don't give a damn if they're on drugs or not," Hunt proclaimed. "I'll knock their head off. At the end of the day, those steroids ain't going to help them when I hit them."

Of course Hunt, along with the rest of the UFC's heavyweight division, will likely be caught in limbo until Overeem's NSAC hearing can take place on April 24. But in the meantime, his message to his devoted network of supporters is simple.
"Thanks to the Army of Doom. Keeping bombing away."

Cain Velasquez Says He'd Have No Problem With Frank Mir Fighting Junior Dos Santos

There's little more than one month to go until UFC 146, but the show's main event is still in flux. We do know that heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos is fighting; what we don't know is who will be standing across from him at the opening horn.

If Alistair Overeem can convince the Nevada state athletic commission of a legitimate reason his testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio was high following a recent drug test, he'll keep his spot as the challenger, but if not, it still appears that Frank Mir is the frontrunner to replace.

You would think that might not sit well with former champ Cain Velasquez, who lost to Dos Santos by knockout in his last fight, but if it happens, he's perfectly fine with it.
"I definitely think that's fair," Velasquez said on Thursday from the site of UFC 145. "He's off a three-fight winning streak, and dos Santos beat me fair and square. I'm definitely mad about mine, but I know with one more fight, I'll be in the same position. If that did come up, then yeah, I'd be fine with that."

Velasquez couldn't be blamed if he thought differently. Since the fight, it was confirmed that he was injured in the lead-up to the fight. Like any champion, he'd like the chance to avenge the loss while at full strength, but is willing to get a win and wait his turn to do so.

The UFC previously confirmed that the Velasquez-Mir winner would have the opportunity to fight for the championship, but we won't know for at least a few more days whether or not that fight will transpire.

As for Velasquez, he is going on the assumption that it will. And if it doesn't, he'll be ready for whatever the UFC throws at him with an end goal in mind.

"As far as we know right now, it's Frank, so that's what I'm getting ready for," he said. "But if it turned out to be different, it didn't matter who it'd be, as long as it's one more to get in that same position, to fight for the heavyweight title."

Almost three weeks ago it was revealed that Alistair Overeem had tested positive for an elevated testosterone to epitestosterone ratio and subsequently would have to go before the Nevada Satate Athletic Commission.
Most expected an immediate reaction from the often out-spoken President of the UFC Dana White, but he had remained mostly quiet about the subject until tonight, announcing that Overeem was out and Mir was in:
Taking off to Atlanta!!!! May 26 th is now Mir vs JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand.

Frank Mir has officially replaced Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 146, according to UFC President Dana White.Mir is now slated to fight UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos on May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

White tweeted out the news late Friday night.

Mir's original opponent, Cain Velasquez, will remain on the card, however a replacement opponent has yet to be decided, Velasquez's manager Bob Cook told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani.

Overeem's status was thrown into jeopardy earlier this month when the former Strikeforce champion failed a random pre-fight drug test, resulting in a 14:1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio that was well above Nevada's 6:1 limit.

Overeem is currently scheduled to plead his case in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Tuesday. The fighter's manager, Glenn Robinson, recently stated that Overeem had a reasonable explanation for the failed test.

Frank Mir (16-5) rides a three-fight win streak into the title bout, counting victories over Mirko Filipovic, Roy Nelson and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Cain Velasquez to Meet Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva at UFC 146

The UFC 146 dominoes continue to fall following Friday night's announcement that Frank Mir, not Alistair Overeem, would fight Junior dos Santos for the heavyweight title at UFC 146.

On Sunday, UFC president Dana White announced via Twitter that Cain Velasquez, Frank Mir's original opponent, will now meet Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva on May 26. White did not say who Roy Nelson, Silva's original opponent, will now face, but "Big Country" is expected to remain on the Memorial Day card.

This fight will mark Silva's UFC debut and his first fight since getting knocked out by Daniel Cormier in Strikeforce last September. Velasquez hasn't fought since losing his heavyweight title to Junior dos Santos last November at UFC on FOX 1.A candidate that has been talked about as a potential opponent for Nelson has been Ben Rothwell, who knocked out Brendan Schaub Saturday night at UFC 145, however his manager Monte Cox told MMAFighting.com Sunday night that they have not been offered a fight against Nelson.

As for Overeem, he has yet to fully address why his testosterone to epitestosterone ratio came back at an above-limit 14:1 following a March 27 drug test in Las Vegas. and he hasn't said anything since Friday's announcement that he would not be fighting dos Santos after all. According to a source close to Overeem's camp, the heavyweight is expected to release a written statement tomorrow morning at approximately 9 a.m. ET. to explain the situation from his perspective.

As of Sunday night, Overeem is still scheduled to meet with the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Tuesday to explain his side of the story. He can choose to withdraw his license application now that he isn't scheduled to fight anymore, however, the NSAC would have to accept his withdrawal. Overeem could be sidelined for a year if the NSAC decides against granting him a license on Tuesday.

UFC 146's main card will air live on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Apr 23, 2012 - Alistair Overeem (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122499/alistair-overeem) has broken his silence for the first time since the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced earlier this month that he failed a pre-UFC 146 (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/95237/ufc-146-dos-santos-vs-mir) drug test.

Overeem, who was scheduled to meet Junior dos Santos (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122489/junior-dos-santos) for the UFC heavyweight title next month until the promotion replaced him with Frank Mir (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122495/frank-mir), issued a written statement explaining why his testosterone to epitestosterone ratio came back at an above-limit 14:1. The NSAC's T/E ratio limit is 6:1.

In the statement, Overeem announced that he has withdrawn his NSAC license application and explained why his T/E ratio was so high. You can read the full statement below.
To my friends and fans,

I am deeply saddened to announce that on Friday, April 20, I respectfully withdrew from the May 26 event so that I can request a continuance until my situation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission is resolved.

I cannot express how sorry I am to the Commission, Junior Dos Santos, the fans, the owners and employees of the UFC, my friends and family and anyone else who this has affected.

I absolutely do not believe in, nor do I use performance-enhancing drugs. I am a clean fighter and I will do whatever it takes to prove this to everyone.

Prior to the UFC 146 press conference in March, I aggravated an old rib injury on my left side. My doctor prescribed, and I accepted, an anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone. I was completely unaware that testosterone was one of the ingredients in the medication. Although I was unaware, I do realize it is my job to know what I am putting into my body.

I respect the Nevada Commissioners and Executive Director Keith Kizer and what they are doing to keep
the sport of mixed martial arts regulated and safe for athletes. I look forward to working with them in the days and weeks ahead.

Roy Nelson to Face Dave Herman, Jamie Varner Returns at UFC 146

A pair of injuries have forced changes to the much-anticipated UFC 146 on May 26, leading to a new opponent for a popular heavyweight and the return of a former champion.

An undisclosed injury forced Gabriel Gonzaga to drop out of his main-card heavyweight showdown with popular Roy Nelson. In his place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena will step Dave Herman.

Nelson is coming off a loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143, in which he took a hellacious beating but survived to a decision. The fighter nicknamed "Big Country" has dropped three of his past four bouts, all via decision. Herman (21-3) has won three of his past four fights, but is coming off a second-round TKO loss at the hands of Stefan Struve on Feb. 15.

An injury has also taken lightweight Evan Dunham out of his undercard match against Edson Barboza. Substituting for Barboza is former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner. Varner won the WEC title in Feb. 2008 and held it nearly two years. But his title loss to Ben Henderson kicked off an 0-3-1 run that led to his Zuffa departure.

Varner (19-6-1) went 3-1 after leaving Zuffa, with all three of his wins via first-round finish. He'll have his work cut out for him in his return bout, as he faces a foe in Barboza (10-0) who's not only unbeaten, but has won Fight of the Night honors in his past three matches. His most recent win was a sensational spinning wheel kick KO of Terry Etim at UFC 142.

The new fights were announced by the company on Tuesday night.
