Michael "Mike" Bernardo (born 28 July 1969) is a South African former kickboxer and boxer from Cape Town. Bernardo is known as Beru-chan in Japan, where he has taken part in K-1 World GPs since 1994. He holds notable wins over Mirko Filipovi?, Andy Hug, Francisco Filho, Branco Cikatic, and 3 straight wins over K-1 legend Peter Aerts.
He made his K-1 debut in K-1 World GP 1995 Opening against Andy Hug. Since then he participated in 5 World Grand Prix Finals, achieving the biggest success in 1996. He reached the final but lost to Hug via spining low kick KO.
On New Year's Eve of 2004, Bernardo was going to face Nigerian fighter and Japanese-TV personality Bobby Ologun in "K1-Dynamite!" but couldn't take part in the event due to an injury and retired from K-1.

Yes, it was a joke. Mike Bernardo, you know Mike Bernardo? He was talking Jesus this, that,… he gave me had bout. When I was fighting him on tournament after that, he was talking about Jesus, and put cross on his shorts, I decided to put 666 on my shorts. I won him that time. Japans liked it and I keep it on my shorts for some time, but later stop d it. But it was only a joke.

en le Banner alleen had het camp van le Banner had protest ingediend en werd de uitslag veranderd.

In die periode had die samen met le Banner de hoogste k.o ratio.

Dramatisch! Zelfmoord of natuurlijke dood op je 42e is beide even tragisch.

K-1 winner Mike Bernardo dies, suicide suspected

One of the hardest-hitting heavyweights ever to take part in the K-1, Mike Bernardo has passed away at the age of 42. Tragically, it seems he took his own life at his home in South Africa today.

Police in his home city of Cape Town are yet to officially confirm Bernardo’s cause of death, but his students have been sending each other messages of support and comfort via social networks, with repeated references to Bernardo having suicided.

A source in the kickboxing industry has also told Fighters Only that Bernardo is thought to have taken his own life. Friends have expressed surprise not least because Bernardo was a committed born-again Christian who was thought to take great solace in his faith.

Bernardo’s storied kickboxing career saw him enter several K-1 Grand Prix tournaments at a time when giants walked the earth. He fought all the greatest names of the sport and his victories included Mirko ‘CroCop’ Filipovic, Andy Hug, Francisco Filho, Branco Cikatic and Peter Aerts.

The crowning glory of his 54-18-3 career was winning the K-1 Grand Prix in 2000 with a stoppage of the aforementioned CroCop. The victory was all the sweeter as it revenged a previous win that CroCop had taken over him in the first round of the preceding years tournament.

A sometime heavyweight boxer, Bernardo also won the vacant WBF belt when he stopped Dan Jerling from Czechslovakia in the sixth round in May 2000, making the millennial year the peak of his combative career. He retained that belt with a 41-second knockout of American Peter McNeely in Cape Town on June 8, 2001 but was stripped of his belt in May 2002 because of inactivity.

His fighting career ended in 2004 and he was seemingly happy as he went into retirement to concentrate on coaching upcoming fighters at his Cape Town gym. Todays news has rocked the kickboxing world and his peers have been paying tribute throughout the day.

Earlier today Fighters Only spoke with CroCop, who said he “can’t believe” the news. “It is a tragedy,” he added. American kickboxing legend Duke Roufus was also upset, posting several heartfelt Twitter messages and turning down interview requests for the day as he sought to be alone with his thoughts.

Damn, erg heftig nieuws zeg...!

Bernardo was een topper en had altijd wel de potentie om een K1 champ te worden..
Voor elke K1 vechter was het altijd een zware dobber om tegen Mike te vechten.

May he rest in peace.

officieel bevestigd door familie en oud trainer.

The Passing of Mike Barnardo

On behalf of the family of Mike Barnardo I would like officially announce his passing on the morning of 14th of February 2012 at his home in Muizenberg Cape Town.

A very special thanks to Mr Ishii from K1 Japan, Fuji Television, Joe Mellilo, his friends and K1 fans in Japan and all over the world. The times Mike spent fighting in Japan were undoubtedly the happiest moments in his life.

Mike was very grateful for the opportunity Mr Ishii granted him as an unknown fighter from South Africa and with the K1 platform he became world renown and respected fighter. Mr Ishii took a personal interest in Mike spending hours with him in the gym working on his kicking and blocking technique, Mr Ishii instilled the Japanese fighting spirit in Mike and for this he was always grateful and honoured. Mike fell in love with Japan and its people and was hearted by the way K1 fans adopted him as one of their own, being more famous and loved there than in his own country. A great personal highlight for him was visiting the grave of Japanese Samurai Musashi.

After Mike’s fighting career he studied and qualified as a clinical psychologist and had a practice in Lakeside Cape Town where he offered trauma and addiction counseling with troubled youth. He also started a promotional company with his old trainer Steve Kalakoda called "BOMA-YE All African Mixed Martial Arts" www.boma-ye.net (http://www.boma-ye.net/) which created a platform for young up and coming African fighters. He was always passionate about creating opportunities for younger fighters and would inspire them to follow their dreams.

The last two years of Mike’s life he battled deep depression and anxiety.

On the 14 February 2012, Mike took his own life at his home in Muizenberg. His remains were found by his family in his apartment shortly after his passing.

Rest in Peace Beru-Chan

"Off course I am shocked, but I must admit I am not surprised. I know he was depressed. Some people close to him (friends and trainers) told me that he had AIDS and that he didn't communicate with anyone lately. He ended his sport career after he found out about the disease. Obviously it was a hard thing for him."
