Ryan Couture Beats Conor Heun

Randy Couture's kid offered up a performance that would make the old man proud on Saturday night, as Ryan Couture earned by far the biggest victory of his mixed martial arts career with a third-round technical knockout victory over Conor Heun at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey.

Couture controlled the pace of the fight for the first two rounds, and in the third he put on a clinic on the ground, transitioning into a dominant position and eventually getting on top of Heun in back mount and pounding away with punches, forcing the referee to stop the fight 2 minutes, 52 seconds into Round 3.

For Couture, who entered the fight with a 3-1 professional record, this is his first win over an experienced, well-rounded opponent and a big step forward in his career.

Couture appears to have improved as both a striker and a grappler: He was getting the better of the stand-up exchanges with Heun, and he also had some impressive submission attempts when the fight went to the ground.

It's not realistic to expect Couture to have a career like his dad, but he deserves credit for a very good showing against Heun.

Sarah Kaufman Beats Alexis Davis in Bloody Brawl

The main event of Saturday night's Strikeforce card is a women's title fight between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey. And now we know who's going to fight the winner of that one: Sarah Kaufman, who turned in a great performance in beating Alexis Davis on the Tate vs. Rousey undercard.

Two judges scored the fight 29-28 for Kaufman, while one scored it a 29-29 draw.

Kaufman opened up a huge cut over Davis's eye in the first round, battered Davis through the second, and then survived the third despite Davis taking her down and controlling her on the ground. It was a tremendous fight, and one that reinforced Kaufman's status as one of the best female fighters in the world.

In fact, a strong case can be made that Kaufman -- not Rousey -- deserved to be fighting Tate in the main event. Rousey burst onto the scene with four impressive first-round submission victories, but Rousey doesn't have the complete body of work that Kaufman has.

"I'm going to come, I'm going to fight, I'm going to have that title. It's my title," Kaufman said afterward.

So while Kaufman wasn't happy about being passed over last time, she'll get her title shot next time. Kaufman is a great fighter.

Jacare Souza Submits Bristol Marunde

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza had no trouble beating Bristol Marunde at Saturday night's Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event, dominating him for two rounds before submitting him in the third.

The fight was a mismatch from the moment it was booked: Marunde was a late replacement who just isn't on the same level as Jacare, one of the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world.

Marunde knew he had nothing for Jacare and mostly played defense before finally getting finished in the third round.

In the first round Jacare took Marunde's back and appeared to be working his way toward a submission, but when Jacare hit Marunde in the back of the head, the referee stood the fight up, giving Marunde new life. Jacare then dropped Marunde with a right hand and pounced on him on the ground, but Jacare wasn't able to submit Marunde on the ground, and Marunde survived the first.

In the second round Jacare opened up his striking, with punches, front kicks and even a spinning back kick, hurting Marunde in the process. But when he took Marunde down and took his back, Marunde surprisingly shook him off and got back to his feet. Jacare dominated the striking, but Marunde once again survived the round.

Jacare started the third round with a takedown, and now he was finally in the place he wanted to be: Jacare stayed on top of Marunde and worked to improve his position for a couple of minutes before finally sinking in an arm-triangle choke to end the fight.

Lumumba Sayers Submits Scott Smith

Lumumba Sayers made short work of Scott Smith at Saturday night's Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event, winning easily against a longtime MMA veteran who doesn't look like he has anything left anymore.

Sayers quickly took Smith down in the first round and took his back, and although Smith got back up the first time, it wasn't long before Sayers took him down again, sunk in a guillotine choke, and forced Smith to tap.

The fight lasted just 1 minute, 34 seconds.

Smith's tap came quickly, and he didn't look like he had much fight left in him. Smith has been in some tremendous battles in his MMA career, but he has now lost four in a row and doesn't appear to be in good shape anymore.

As for Sayers, he's now won two in a row with quick first-round stoppages. He's a good-looking fighter who still has some room to improve but has promise. Smith, on the other hand, is a past-his-prime fighter who may be done.

Kazuo Misaki Beats Paul Daley

Kazuo Misaki turned in an impressive performance to defeat Paul Daley by split decision on Saturday night at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey, controlling the fight in the early going and holding on despite an ugly cut on his face in the third round.

The judges scored it 30-27 Misaki, 29-28 Daley and 29-28 Misaki.

Misaki, a Japanese veteran who was fighting in Strikeforce for just the second time, undoubtedly gained a lot of new fans on Saturday night for a very good showing in an exciting and fun fight.

Misaki was very effective in his striking in the first round, landing punches and then backing away before Daley could connect. Late in the first Daley -- who almost always prefers to stand and trade with his opponents -- took Misaki down, which was a strong indication of just how frustrated Daley was getting with Misaki's striking. Misaki definitely won the first.

The second round was closer, but Daley remained hesitant to really let his hands go because he was frustrated with what Misaki was doing. At his best, Daley throws his punches very hard. That's not what he was doing against Misaki.

A minute into the third round Daley executed a nice takedown and put Misaki on his back, then opened up a huge cut on Misaki's forehead with an elbow. The cut was big enough that the ref halted the fight to have the doctor examine it, but the fight was allowed to continue and Misaki showed a lot of heart, holding on and winning the fight.

Josh Thomson Beats K.J. Noons

Josh Thomson easily beat K.J. Noons on Saturday night's Strikeforce card, dominating him for three rounds in a fight that showed Thomson had superior takedowns and wrestling, but didn't show much else: The fight wasn't particularly aesthetically pleasing, and it left the crowd booing.

All three judges scored it 29-28 for Thomson, who described his performance as "s--t" afterward.

Now Thomson may get a rubber match with Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. Thomson beat Melendez in 2008, then lost to Melendez in 2009. Melendez has steadily improved and Thomson hasn't, however, and Melendez will be a heavy favorite heading into a rubber match.

Most of the first round of Thomson-Noons was a stalemate, with Thomson holding Noons down against the fence but not really advancing his position at all, and the fans began to boo the lack of action. Thomson deserved to win the round because he was the one in control, but it wasn't a particularly impressive round for either man.

Early in the second round Thomson threw a head kick and slipped onto his back, allowing Noons to get on top of him on the ground. But Thomson was able to reverse positions and wind up on top of Noons, once again controlling things from the top position. The fans were growing restless again, and the loudest cheer of the fight came when the referee stood the fight up because Thomson was on top and not doing much of anything. It wasn't long, however, before Thomson took Noons down and got on top of him again near the fence, and that's how the round ended, with the fans booing again.

In the third round it only took Thomson 30 seconds to use a trip takedown to get on top of Noons, and from the top position he sunk in an arm-triangle choke. Noons bucked Thomson off to escape that choke, but Thomson remained relentless on the top and wouldn't give up, and Thomson also got more active with ground and pound than he had been in the first two rounds. It was an easy round for Thomson and an easy win.

Ronda Rousey Submits Miesha Tate

In a tremendous main event to Saturday night's Strikeforce card, a new women's champion has been crowned: Ronda Rousey has submitted Miesha Tate with a first-round arm bar.

Rousey is now 5-0, with all five wins by first-round arm bar. But this was a much tougher fight than her previous four.

None of the previous fights lasted even 50 seconds, but this one was a back-and-forth battle that lasted most of the first round. In the end, Tate didn't want to tap out, and she appeared to have an injured arm for her trouble.

"She was much more savvy on the ground than I anticipated," Rousey said of Tate. "She's good, she's legit, but I don't feel that bad about it."

It was a great fight: Tate charged in swinging but Rousey grabbed hold of her and did exactly what she wanted to do, using her world-class judo to throw Tate to the ground. Rousey then went for an arm bar, and it appeared that she would win this fight the way she had won all of her previous fights, with an arm bar in the first minute.

But Tate fought it off and not only escaped but wound up in an advantageous position, taking Rousey's back. Rousey fought that off and got back to her feet, and after a brief exchange of punches standing Rousey used a judo throw to get on top of Tate on the ground.

From there it was only a matter of time before Rousey got what she wanted, an opportunity to sink in an arm bar. Tate desperately wanted to survive and at first refused to tap, but eventually her arm bent in an ugly way, and Tate did tap.

She stayed on the ground for several minutes as Rousey celebrated in the cage.

UFC President Dana White Had No Input in Tate vs. Rousey

Dana White isn't in charge of Strikeforce after all.

Less than a month after telling MMAJunkie.com that he was going to be "very involved with Strikeforce" and was "happy about the Columbus show" the UFC president told MMAFighting.com on Saturday night that wasn't the case anymore.

According to White, after a series of talks with Showtime, things didn't work out between the premium cable network and himself. White said he will not be attending tonight's Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event and had no input in the show. As of now, he will not have the kind of input in future Strikeforce shows that he wanted.
In response to a question on Twitter about the Strikeforce announcers, White made his feelings on the promotion clear.

"They (Showtime) run that sh** not me. I'm out," he wrote. "I'm 100% UFC."

The buzz surrounding Saturday night's Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey title fight seemed to legitimately excite White about Strikeforce for the first time since Zuffa purchased Strikeforce last year and he had teased major changes beginning with this show, but after things apparently didn't work out with Showtime, the product looks the same on television and in the arena.

White wouldn't specify why he was unable to gain control over the promotion or what kind of changes he was hoping to make.

Volgende wedstrijd Kaufman daarna gewoon tegenover Coenen zetten. Dan zal Cyborg wel weer terugzijn en dan zien we het wel weer. Het lijkt me wel een leuke matchup tegen Cyborg, 2 compleet verschillende stijlen. Of ze gaat in no time slapie doen of ze maakt een goede kans.

Miesha Tate Didn't Break Arm in Ronda Rousey Fight

Amazingly, Miesha Tate didn't suffer any broken bones in her left arm following Saturday night's gruesome loss via armbar to Ronda Rousey.

"I had X-Rays last night," Tate told MMAFighting.com via text message. "No bones are broken, which I already knew. Other than that, I have to get an MRI to find out anything further."

Tate, the now former Strikeforce bantamweight champion, wouldn't elaborate on when she'll find out what kind of shape her arm is in and when she'll back to 100 percent. According to a Strikeforce official Saturday night, the early thought was that she had at least damaged ligaments in her arm.

Rousey submitted Tate via armbar at 4:27 of the first round but only after Tate refused to tap for several seconds, which led to her arm seemingly bending backwards. A similar scenario played out in the first minute of the fight, but Tate was able to escape that submission attempt.

Following the tapout, Tate remained on the canvas for several seconds and was unable to move her left arm in the cage after the fight.

The win improved Rousey's professional record to 5-0, with all five wins coming via first-round armbar. Tate's record dropped to 12-3.

Tate vs. Rousey Medical Suspensions: Miesha Tate Out Indefinitely With Elbow Injury

Miesha Tate and three others received indefinite medical suspensions in the aftermath of Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey, the Ohio Athletic Commission confirmed to MMAFighting.com on Monday.

Tate, the former Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion, appeared to injure her left arm while defending two grisly armbar attempts during her headlining loss to Ronda Rousey. "Takedown" later revealed to MMAFighting.com that her arm was not broken, miraculously, and she was awaiting further MRI results to discover the extent of the damage.

Brandon Saling's Ohio, New Jersey Licenses Revoked for Falsified Information

After causing a stir on Saturday at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey, welterweight Brandon Saling's tenure in Strikeforce was short-lived. It turns out there may also not be much time left in his mixed martial arts career. According to Executive Director Bernie Profato of the Ohio Athletic Commission (OAC), Saling's fighter license has been revoked.

Profato told MMA Fighting Saling falsified information on his application for a license by failing to disclose he had "ever been convicted of a crime other than a traffic offense". The omission puts Saling in violation of Administrative Code 3773-1-09, clause F, of the bylaws governing MMA in Ohio, which states a fighter's license can be suspended or revoked if he or she "has violated any law with respect to any sports regulated by the commission or any rule or order of the commission or has been convicted of a felony."

Saling is a registered sex offender and was convicted of "gross sexual imposition", a felony, in 2004 in the state of Ohio.

Saling most recently fought in Columbus, Ohio at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey where he lost to Roger Bowling via second-round TKO. His presence at the event disturbed many in the MMA community for his racially-controversial "88" or "Heil Hitler" tattoo on the inside of left collarbone. Upon further inspection of his background, it was revealed Saling was had been convicted of felonious sex crimes.

"Obviously this guy is never going to fight for us again," UFC President Dana White told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani. "For this guy to ever get licensed again he'd have to go before a hearing for the athletic commissions and I find it hard to believe that this guy will ever be licensed again. He better go find another job."

Profato states Saling has been notified by certified mail of the commission's decision to revoke his license and that he is entitled to a hearing. Attempts to contact Saling for comment were not immediately returned.

Saling will tentatively have his first opportunity to challenge his license revocation at the next meeting of the OAC on April 11th. Should he choose to challenge their decision, Profato states he'll be able to use the services of an attorney, witnesses, his own testimony and any countervailing evidence that would ostensibly compel the commission to reverse course.

In addition to his license suspension in Ohio, MMA Fighting has confirmed with counsel Nick Lembo of the New Jersey Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) that Saling's license in that state has also been revoked for falsifying information on his license applications. Saling recently fought in New Jersey at Bellator 59 in November of 2011 and Ring of Combat 36 in June of last year.
At the time of this writing, it's not clear what options Saling has in New Jersey to challenge the NJSACB's decision.

Miesha Tate Recounts Gruesome Finish, Still Feels She Can Beat Ronda Rousey

No fighter plans on becoming a fixture on someone else's highlight reel, especially in the smoldering fog of a grudge match.
So when former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate found herself befalling the same fate as seven other women before her, trapped underneath Ronda Rousey with her left arm dangerously close to snapping in two, the thought of tapping seemed somewhat ludicrous. Only when there was no other option did finally she relent, handing Rousey the victory and the belt.

Tate's mangled limb was a shocking image for viewers witnessing from home -- the footage is so grisly, weeks later her family members still refuse to watch it -- but would "Takedown" have called it quits sooner if anyone else on the planet was the one wrenching her arm from its socket?

"It's possible," Tate admitted on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour.

"Obviously I knew (the risk) going into that. It didn't catch me by surprise. A lot of people like Bryan (Caraway) say, ‘you're crazy. How did you not tap to that?' I think because I was prepared for that mentally. Not that I was ever planning on being there, but I knew that if I got into that position, it was a realistic possibility, and so I was prepared.

"I felt my arm go in, and I was like, ‘you know, I don't want to tap,'" she continued. "And I didn't. So I felt my hand touch the back of her thigh and I knew everything was really bad. I just didn't know at that point. I didn't feel there was a way out of it. I had no idea how much longer there was on the clock and it just felt like things were getting worse and worse. And I was like, ‘I just don't know how much of this my arm can take.' I think that's when common sense started to settle in, rather than pure stubbornness."

Tate was lucky to have come to that realization when she did. The extent of the damage done to her is arm is still in question, but despite the gruesomeness of the contortion, x-rays have shown there to be no broken bones. The 25-year-old Tate is currently waiting on MRI results to determine if surgery is required, but she is "pretty sure" she has torn ligament towards the inner side of her elbow. Though if you saw her walking around, beside some slight swelling and bruising, it'd be hard to tell the difference.

As for the question of if the former champion would handle the finish differently in hindsight, Tate was noncommittal. However, she made it exceptionally clear that she wouldn't fall for the same trick twice if given the chance.

"I, personally, would love the opportunity to have a rematch," Tate protested. "I think at a high level, it takes one mistake. Anyone can make a mistake at any moment and someone's able to capitalize on that.

"I don't feel that Ronda proved anything other than what she's already (proved) -- that she has one thing that she's great at. Really phenomenal at. But everything else, I could beat her. Give me another shot. I think it was competitive. I think for the most part I was probably winning. And I think at a competitive high level, one day one person could beat the one person, and the other day the other person would beat the other person."

While the bad blood between both women clearly still lingers in the air, Tate did offer a salute of respect to her rival, acknowledging that what Rousey had done in a short amount of time was relatively remarkable. Surprisingly, Tate also picked Rousey to defeat Sarah Kaufman in her upcoming title defense, explaining that Kaufman's style plays right in Rousey's strengths.

Ultimately, however, Tate understands that despite their differences, both she and Rousey are in the same boat, fighting the frustrating uphill battle to gain respect for women's MMA. And in that regard, with reports of 506,000 viewers tuning in to watch the most heavily-hyped women's match since 2009, Tate believes they succeeded.

"I wanted to go out there and I wanted to make a very bold statement," she concluded. "I'm not just a cute girl. I'm not here to be cute for the camera. I wanted to show that women's MMA is legit. We come out there and we fight very, very hard.

"We can definitely carry the main event. We can definitely draw the numbers. We can definitely entertain, and we're also really skilled. And I think that, in the big picture, we accomplished that."
