Thiago Alves vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama Targeted for July UFC Event

Yoshihiro Akiyama still has a job in the UFC, and now has his next opponent set, as well.Despite losing four straight in the octagon, Akiyama's spirited performances have ensured him at least one more go, and it will come against Thiago Alves at a July event -- most likely UFC 149 -- according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The two have both agreed to the matchup, sources told MMA Fighting.

The Japanese fighter recently dropped to welterweight, where he fought Jake Shields at UFC 144. The two went all three rounds, with Shields taking a unanimous decision on all three judges' scorecards. Prior to that, Akiyama(13-5, 2 no decisions) had lost consecutive bouts to Vitor Belfort, Michael Bisping and Chris Leben.

After dropping his fourth straight, there was speculation about whether or not he would be cut, and he'll face the same kind of stakes the next time around.

In Alves, Akiyama will be facing an opponent hungry for a win.

Alves appeared to be on the way to a victory over Martin Kampmann during March's UFC on FX event in Sydney, Australia when he went for a takedown and fell into a fight-ending guillotine choke with just 48 seconds left in the fight. With the loss, Alves fell to 19-9 overall after dropping four of his last six.

The fight is likely as part of the UFC's inaugural foray into Calgary on July 21 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. In the main event of that show, Jose Aldo will attempt to defend his featherweight championship, though his opponent has yet to be named.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo Set for UFC 149

Two of the UFC's top heavyweights will look to get back on track in July.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will meet Cheick Kongo at UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Calgary Sun reported on Tuesday. UFC president Dana White tweeted on Wednesday that the fight will not headline the pay-per-view.

Speaking of which, Jose Aldo was originally scheduled to headline the card, but White said on Tuesday that the promotion is considering moving him to UFC 147 on June 23 in Brazil. He was open to the idea of booking Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson as the UFC 149 main event but said the organization has yet to finalize those plans.

Nogueira (33-7-1, 1 NC) hasn't fought since he was submitted by Frank Mir via kimura at UFC 140 in December. Nogueira never tapped, however, the fight was stopped after Mir broke his right arm. The 35-year-old Brazilian is 2-3 in his last five fights.

As for Kongo (17-7-2), the 36-year-old Frenchman recently had his four-fight unbeaten streak snapped by Mark Hunt when he lost via TKO at UFC 144 in February. The loss marked his first since his Dec. 2009 submission to Mir at UFC 107.

UFC 149 will take place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. It will mark the UFC's first visit to the city.

Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch Slated for UFC 149 in July

Jose Aldo will defend his UFC featherweight title against Erik Koch in Calgary after all.

According to sources close to the fight, Aldo (25-1) vs. Koch (13-1) will headline UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary. The UFC considered booking the fight on June 23 in Brazil, but Aldo wasn't ready to fight then. They had originally offered the title fight to Hatsu Hioki, however, Hioki asked for one more fight before facing Aldo, so they booked him against Ricardo Lamas on June 22 in Atlantic City, N.J.

CagePotato.com first reported the possibility of the bout last week.

The 25-year-old Aldo enters the fight riding a 14-fight winning streak. He's 3-0 since entering the UFC against Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian and Chad Mendes.

Koch, 23, has won his last four fights in a row. He most recently defeated Jonathan Brookins in September, and while he was booked against Dustin Poirier at UFC 143, he was forced to pull out of the fight due to an injury.

UFC 149 will mark the promotion's first trip to Calgary. The main card will air live on pay-per-view.

Siyar Bahadurzada Steps In to Face Thiago Alves at UFC 149

An injury has knocked Yoshihiro Akiyama from the UFC 149 card, and he's been replaced by Siyar Bahadurzada in a welterweight showdown with Thiago Alves.
The UFC confirmed the opponent swap on Tuesday afternoon.
No specifics were offered on Akiyama's injury, or how long it would keep him out of action.

Bahadurzada made a successful UFC debut at the promotion's April event in Sweden, knocking out the durable Paulo Thiago in just 42 seconds. Overall, it was his seventh straight win as he improved his career record to 21-4-1.

His fight with Alves should come as a striker's delight, as both men prefer the standup game to any other facet of MMA.
Alves will be looking to rebound following a heartbreaking loss at at March UFC on FUEL event. After controlling the first two rounds of his main event fight with Martin Kampmann, Alves went for a takedown and was choked out guillotine. The loss dropped the former No. 1 contender to 19-9.

UFC 149 takes place on July 21 from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. In the main event of the show, featherweight champion Jose Aldo will attempt to defend his belt against Erik Koch.

Erik Koch Embraces Opportunity to Fight Jose Aldo

When Erik Koch got the call offering him a chance to fight Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight championship, he ran to his living room, fell to his knees and screamed at the top of his lungs.
That was a decidedly difficult reaction from Hatsu Hioki. Truth be told, the Japanese fighter was the promotion's first choice as a challenger, but he asked for one more fight before competing for the belt.

So despite the fact that the call came as a bit of a surprise to the 23-year-old Koch, he wasn't about to turn down the opportunity.

"It's awesome," he said at a Wednesday press conference in Calgary, the site of July 21's UFC 149. "This is 23 years in the making. I've been doing this since I was a little kid. Just to be here and to get a chance, especially against a dominant champion who's an awesome champion, it's an awesome test. I'm just really excited."

If Koch wins, he will become the second youngest champion in UFC history, just behind current light-heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones, who at the time of his title win was about one month younger than Koch will be when he faces Aldo at July 21's UFC 149.

If there is one asterisk to that "youngest champion" clause, it's Aldo, who was just 23 years, 2 months, 10 days old when he beat Mike Brown to capture the belt back in 2009, about six months younger than Jones was when he won the belt. Of course, at the time, Zuffa only promoted a featherweight division in UFC sister company WEC. He was later promoted to UFC champ when the brands merged, and he's never relinquished his grip on the belt, mostly by demolishing whoever has been placed before him.

For his part, Aldo wasn't surprised about Koch getting the call.

"I think it was actually a well-deserved nomination," Aldo said through his interpreter. "Erik has a good rank and I wasn't actually so surprised even though there were some other interesting names. I'm up for the challenge. I think it's fair he's going up for the title because he's been going through a long list of fights previously with the WEC."

Koch (13-1) has won four straight since his only career loss, which consequently came against Aldo's last challenger, Chad Mendes. Since then, he's rattled off victories against Jonathan Brookins, Raphael Assuncao, Francisco Rivera and Bendy Casimir, with three of the four coming via stoppage.

Still, it will be a long leap from that to facing the likes of Aldo (21-1), who hasn't lost a fight since 2005 in fashioning a 14-fight win streak.

It may be a challenge, but it's one he's embracing.

"There's a lot more exposure and a lot of things I've got to do, but to me, a fight's a fight," Koch said. "I've never really gotten super nervous before a fight. It's something I just love to do. So I don't think there will be really any jitters. To be on top of my game, I know I have to be mentally sound. I have to be in the right place, and I'm always good at getting there. So, I don't think I'll have a problem with it."

Thiago Alves Out of UFC 149

Thiago Alves is the latest UFC fighter to be stung by the dreaded injury bug.

According to sources close to his camp, Alves has pulled out of his UFC 149 fight against Siyar Bahadurzada due to an undisclosed injury. MMAWeekly.com first reported the news on Friday. No replacement has been signed just yet.

Alves was looking to bounce back following his submission loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC on FX 2.Earlier in the day, news broke that Thiago Silva pulled out of UFC 149 due to a back injury.

UFC 149, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch for the UFC featherweight title, will take place July 21 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Back Injury Forces Thiago Silva Out of UFC 149 Fight Against Shogun Rua

Another back injury has forced Thiago Silva to pull out of his UFC 149 fight against Mauricio Rua, MMA Fighting has confirmed with Silva's manager Dan Lambert.

MMA Junkie first reported the news Friday afternoon.

According to Lambert, he doesn't believe Silva will need surgery to fix the lingering back issue that has plagued Silva's career over the last couple of years. Silva's bad back kept him out of action for an entire year in 2010 and it also bothered him enough going into his UFC 125 fight against Brandon Vera to force him to take prohibitive prescription steroids, which got him suspended for another year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The Brazilian finally returned to action in April, only to lose a unanimous decision to Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden.

"Hopefully not long," Lambert said in response to how long Silva will be sidelined for, "but no way he could prepare for Shogun."

According to MMA Junkie, UFC president Dana White wants to replace Silva with Glover Teixeira, who defeated Kyle Kingsbury in 1:53 last week at UFC 146.

When contacted by MMAFighting.com, Teixeira's trainer John Hackleman would only say that "there is an interest on both sides."

And just in case you were wondering, Alexander Gustafsson's trainer Eric Del Fierro told MMAFighting.com that the UFC hasn't contacted his fighter yet about meeting Rua in a little less than two months.

UFC 149, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Erik Koch for the UFC featherweight title, takes place July 21 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Bibiano Fernandes Signs With UFC, Makes Debut at UFC 149

The top international bantamweight outside of the UFC is joining its ranks.
Brazilian Bibiano Fernandes, who was the DREAM 135-pound champion, has signed with the UFC and will make his debut against Roland Delorme at UFC 149, the promotion announced on Monday.

Fernandes (11-3) had spent most of his career at featherweight, winning DREAM's title in that division as well before dropping down to bantamweight. He holds notable wins over Joachim Hansen, Joe Warren and Antonio Banuelos on his record.

In Delorme, he'll be facing an 8-1 fighter who has won both of his octagon outings, with wins over Josh Ferguson and Nick Denis.

UFC also confirmed that Chris Clements has stepped in to replace Thiago Alves in a matchup against Siyar Bahadurzada. Clements (11-4) is riding a five-fight win streak into the fight.

Finally, a welterweight match pitting James Head against Claude Patrick rounds out the additions to the card.

Yet to be determined, however, is a new opponent for Mauricio Rua, who was left without a foe after Thiago Silva dropped out with an injury.

UFC 149 is headlined by a featherweight title match with Jose Aldo attempting to defend his belt against Erik Koch. The event takes place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

This bout, believe it or not, started as Thiago Alves vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight/1773/ufc-149-yoshihiro-akiyama-vs-thiago-alves).
Unfortunately the injury bug has mutated into a swarm and continues to gobble up any careless fighter in its path. After a "sexy" injury (http://www.mmamania.com/2012/5/11/3014733/pic-sexy-ufc-superstar-yoshihiro-akiyama-posts-a-photo-of-the-knee) to Akiyama, Ultimate Fighting Championship (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/promotion/ufc) (UFC) tapped (http://www.mmamania.com/2012/5/8/3008327/thiago-alves-vs-siyar-bahadurzada-ufc-149-Yoshihiro-Akiyama-injured-mma) Siyar Bahadurzada (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/131378/siyar-bahadurzada) to take his place.
Then "The Pitbull" had to be put down after getting hurt (http://www.mmamania.com/2012/6/1/3058030/ufc-149-fight-card-thiago-alves-injury-forces-him-out-of-siyar) in practice.
Now Chris Clements (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/151162/chris-clements) steps up on short notice to try and cement his place among the baddest of the 170-pound bad, taking on "The Killer" at the UFC 149: "Aldo vs. Koch" pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 21, 2012.
UFC.com (http://www.ufc.com/news/ufc-149-fight-card-updates) announced the line-up change earlier today.
http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg
Clements (11-4) made his Octagon debut with a split decision win over Keith Wisniewski (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/141556/keith-wisniewski) at the UFC 145 (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/92541/ufc-145-jones-vs-evans) event earlier this year in Atlanta. His win over "The Polish Connection" pushed his current win streak to five. Meanwhile, Bahadurzada (21-4-1) also made a successful UFC debut by recently pasting Paulo Thiago (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122592/paulo-thiago) at UFC on FUEL TV 2 (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/95194/ufc-on-fuel-tv-2) in Sweden.
Who gets it done up north?
UFC 149 features a main event title fight between reigning featherweight (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/featherweight) champion Jose Aldo (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122473/jose-aldo) putting his 145-pound title on the line against the dangerous striking attack of division number one contender Erik Koch (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122964/erik-koch).

Hector Lombard to Face Tim Boetsch at UFC 149

Hector Lombard didn't stay opponent-less for long. The newly signed UFC middleweight was knocked out of a UFC on FOX 4 main event slot after an injury struck his oppponent Brian Stann. Instead, he's been moved, with the UFC pairing him off with Tim Boetsch in a bout set for UFC 149 in Calgary.

Unfortunately, that bit of booking news is offset by yet another injury, as Boetsch was made available after his previously scheduled opponent Michael Bisping withdrew from their proposed bout with an undisclosed injury.

With the change, Lombard's debut will actually be moved up two weeks, as UFC 149 takes place on July 21, while his originally scheduled date at UFC on FOX 4 is set for August 4.

The Cuban is 31-2 with 1 no contest in his career, and hasn't lost in his last 25 fights, a stretch that dates back to November 2006.

Boetsch has gone unbeaten since moving to middleweight, going 3-0 during that time with wins over Kendall Grove, Nick Ring, and most recently, Yushin Okami. He is 15-4 overall.

The UFC did not offer any specifics on the injury to Bisping, or any timeline on when he might return.

Jose Aldo Injured, Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao Shifted to Headline UFC 149

The summer of injuries lives on, and Jose Aldo has now joined its growing list of causalities.

Aldo, the reigning UFC featherweight champion, was removed from the main event of UFC 149 after suffering an undisclosed injury, promotion officials announced on Saturday.

With Aldo sidelined, UFC 148's interim bantamweight title fight between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao will now headline UFC 149.

Officials have yet to comment if Erik Koch, Aldo's opponent, will remain on the card, only stating that the title tilt is "postponed."

UFC 149 takes place July 21, 2012 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canana. Already, the main card has been eviscerated by injuries, losing Michael Bisping, Mauricio Rua vs. Thiago Silva, and Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Thiago Alves in recent weeks.

With Faber and Barao off UFC 148, promotion officials have not revealed a new co-main event. Barao, of course, is an injury replacement for UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who suffered an ACL injury while coaching opposite Faber on The Ultimate Fighter Live.

Bibiano Fernandes Out of UFC 149 Because He Never Signed Contract

Another one bites the dust.

A week after announcing that former DREAM champion Bibiano Fernandes signed with the UFC, the organization broke the news that the Brazilian will no longer be competing at UFC 149. The reason? Well, according to Fernandes, he never signed a UFC contract to begin with.
"I would like to make it clear that I am not a UFC athlete as I did not sign any contract with the UFC organization," he wrote on his Facebook page. "Negotiations between the UFC and myself did take place, however, we could not resolve the issues on the table and as a result we did not come to an agreement."

According to sources close to Fernandes, he has received a more lucrative offer from ONE FC, but he has yet to sign that contract as well.

Fernandes (11-3) was scheduled to meet Roland Delorme (8-1) in Calgardy, Alberta, Canada. No word just yet on who Delorme will now face.

This marks another blow to what was once a solid, sold-out card. The following is a list of all the main card fighters who have pulled out of UFC 149 for one reason or another: Jose Aldo, Erik Koch, Thiago Alves, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Shogun Rua, Thiago Silva, Michael Bisping. Fernandes wasn't scheduled to fight on the main card.

As a result, the new pay-per-view lineup currently looks like this:

Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao -- interim bantamweight title
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo
Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard
Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Chris Clements
Court McGee vs. Nick Ring (not officially announced as a PPV fight)

Shawn Jordan Replaces Injured Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Against Cheick Kongo at UFC 149

The UFC injury bug continues to spoil the promotion's debut in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The organization confirmed on Saturday that Shawn Jordan will replace the injured Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira against Cheick Kongo next month at UFC 149. Sherdog.com first reported the news.

Nogueira is just the latest big-name fighter to pull out of UFC 149. The others are: Jose Aldo, Shogun Rua, Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva, Michael Bisping, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Erik Koch and Bibiano Fernandes.

Jordan (13-3) won his Octagon debut in March when he defeated Oli Thompson via second-round TKO. The former Strikeforce and Bellator fighter also holds a win over Lavar Johnson.

Kongo (17-7) will look took bounce back from his first-round TKO loss to Mark Hunt at UFC 144 in February. The loss snapped the Frenchman's four-fight unbeaten streak.

"Big Nog" hasn't fought since Frank Mir broke his arm at UFC 140 last December.

UFC 149, now headlined by Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao for the interim bantamweight title, will take July 21 on Scotiabank Place in Calgary.

UFC 149: oh sweet mercy.... Siyar out injured, new bout is Chris Clements vs Matt Riddle

With Siyar Bahadurzada out at UFC 149, Chris Clements now meets Matt Riddle

Siyar Bahadurzada, who originally replaced an injured Yoshihiro Akiyama, is the latest scratch from July's UFC 149 event.

UFC officials today announced Bahadurzada has been forced to withdraw from the event due to injury, and Matt Riddle (6-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) now steps in to face Chris Clements (11-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

Clements was also a replacement fighter, moving into a slot originally reserved for Thiago Alves.

UFC 149 takes place July 21 at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Main-card fights air on pay-per-view while preliminary-card fights air on FX and stream on Facebook.

Riddle looks to build on the strength of a hard-fought split-decision win over Henry Martinez at this past February's UFC 143 event. Riddle was then expected to fight Brazilian Luis Ramos at this past weekend's UFC on FX 4 event but was forced to pull out of the contest and was replaced by Matt Brown. It was the second time Riddle and Ramos were expected to meet, but after a second cancellation, "Deep Waters" will move on to a new target.

Clements, a Canadian fighter, recently made his promotional debut and earned a split-decision victory over Keith Wisniewski at April's UFC 145 event. "Menace," who got a UFC contract after regional-show wins over notables Jonathan Goulet and Rich Clementi, now has five straight victories. Ten of his 11 career wins have come via knockouts.

With the change, the UFC 149 card now includes:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)

Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao (for interim bantamweight title)
Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard
Shawn Jordan vs. Cheick Kongo
James Head vs. Claude Patrick
Chris Clements vs. Matt Riddle

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX)

Court McGee vs. Nick Ring
Roland Delorme vs. Francisco Rivera
Ryan Jimmo vs. Anthony Perosh
Bryan Caraway vs. Mitch Gagnon
Antonio Carvalho vs. Daniel Pineda
Mitch Clarke vs. Anton Kuivanen

With Claude Patrick Injured, Brian Ebersole Faces James Head at UFC 149

When Brian Ebersole defeated T.J. Waldburger at June's UFC on FX 3 show, it was his fourth straight win in the octagon.

Always the unpredictable one, Ebersole surprised many by saying despite that success, he was going to consider a shift downward from welterweight to lightweight.

The move will wait, but instead he'll take another surprising path, putting his streak on the line in a short-notice bout as a replacement. Ebersole has agreed to step in and face James Head at UFC 149, the promotion confirmed.

Ebsersole is replacing Claude Patrick, who suffered an undisclosed injury in training and was forced out of the event.
It's just another injury that has racked the event, including others to featherweight champ and main eventer Jose Aldo as well as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Thiago Silva and others.

Ebersole comes in with a record of 50-14-1 and 1 no contest, and is fresh off the aforementioned win over Waldburger, which was a hard-fought unanimous decision.

Head, by contrast, is a relative MMA neophyte, with an 8-2 record. He recently got his first octagon win by defeating Papy Abedi by rear naked choke in the first round of their UFC on FUEL 2 match.

Renan Barao Sees Jose Aldo as UFC 149 Secret Weapon, Urijah Faber Disagrees

Brazil's Nova Uniao and California's Team Alpha Male have produced some of the best lighter weight fighters in mixed martial arts. Two of their top performers -- Brazilian Renan Barao and Californian Urijah Faber -- are headlining UFC 149 on July 21.

But it's not the first time the camps have paired off for divisional bragging rights. It happened as recently as April 2010, when Nova Uniao's dynamic Jose Aldo beat Faber in a featherweight title fight.

In that bout, Aldo went the distance with Faber and presumably learned plenty about his style and tendencies in the process. So it doesn't come as a surprise when Barao says he's leaned on his teammate for some advice in crafting a game plan for Faber.

"We had an excellent camp down here, we have an excellent strategy and obviously we benefitted from Aldo’s input," he said through an interpreter during a Thursday teleconference. "Aldo knows how Urijah fights, and he was also able to help us devise our strategy going in to make this camp, so thank God we had an excellent camp and we’ll be very ready for this fight."

Faber, however, says he stands both prepared for Barao's fighting prowess, and unconcerned about Aldo's advice. Originally scheduled to face bitter rival Dominick Cruz, he was forced to settle for the dangerous but still somewhat unknown Barao, who is the author of one of the longest unbeaten stretches in MMA history. Barao hasn't lost since his very first pro fight back in April 2005. Since then, he's fought 29 times, with 28 wins and one no contest.

In UFC and WEC fights, he's gone a perfect 5-0 with three finishes, making him the obvious replacement when Cruz went down. And even though Faber acknowledged that he enjoys Barao's aggressive style, he remains unfazed by the role of former opponent Aldo in Barao's camp. That was made abundantly clear when he was asked if Aldo's insight offered Barao any advantage.

"Is he going to bring Jose in there to help fight me? If so, then yes, but we’re all individuals," he said. "I feel like Renan, although he has a lot of similarities to Jose Aldo, he is a very different fighter. They're different sized fighters. They're different skill sets. It's a different fight. Same with me and my camp.

"I don't think that having Aldo’s input is going to change too much for me," he continued. "He’s probably going to tell him to kick me in the leg, but I’m sure Barao was planning to kick me in the leg anyway. I'm stoked for a great fight. I really like the camp I’m fighting against. It's kind of a fight pitting the two best light-weight camps in the world against each other, so I think we'll take extra pride in that for sure."

After a long run as a headliner in both the WEC and UFC, Faber is a well-known commodity in the MMA game, but Barao, who has fought on only two UFC main cards, remains far less known. On Thursday's conference call, it took over 20 minutes for him to field his first question, and even then, he had little to say except that he'd introduce or re-introduce himself to the masses in the octagon, presumably at Faber's expense.

After a sustained history of winning, Barao is considered a slight favorite to continue that long unbeaten run. But Faber believes he's got him well scouted, and that even an assist from Aldo won't be enough to overcome him.

"I think probably the thing he has going for him is just the confidence of coming off the 29 wins," he said. "He's human just like anyone else. That long streak is going to come to an end, and I'm the one to do it."

Mike
23-07-2012, 20:06
Harrie welke partij heb jij gezien?
