Rafael dos Anjos Gets Past Kamal Shalorus

Rafael dos Anjos came all the way in from Brazil to fight Kamal Shalorus at UFC on Fuel 3. But once he got there, he didn't waste much time in the Octagon on Tuesday night in Fairfax, Va.

Dos Anjos (16-6) made quick work of Kamal Shalorus (7-3-2) in a lightweight bout and put himself in the early lead for a submission of the night bonus, winning via rear-naked choke at 1:40 of the first round.

The Brazilian drilled Shalorus with a bulls-eye of a left-legged head kick, then instantly swarmed Shalorus on the ground. Dos Anjos got the Iranian's back and made like B.J. Penn in using textbook positioning to wrap up his foe and sink in the choke. Shalorus had no choice but to tap.

It could be that Dos Anjos, who has been a .500 fighter since joining the UFC in 2008, is finally gaining some momentum. He's won two of his past three fights, including a knockout of George Sotiropolous. Shalorus, who once headlined a nationally televised WEC event, has dropped three straight fights.

Tom Lawlor Finishes Jason MacDonald

Tom Lawlor just might have given himself the birthday gift of an extended UFC career.
Coming into his middleweight bout with Jason MacDonald on his 29th birthday, Lawlor was in need of a victory, having dropped three of his previous four fights.

Lawlor (8-4) didn't take long to get the job done, as he finished the veteran Canadian jiu-jitsu specialist in just 50 seconds.
"It's my 29th birthday tonight," said the quirky Massachusetts native. "Actually it's my 32nd but I refuse to hit 30."

The end came quick as Lawlor caught MacDonald (25-16) with a left hand on the nose, then followed with a right behind the ear that dropped MacDonald flat to the mat. Lawlor landed one more shot before referee Tom McGovern waved it off.

"I hit him with a two right on the button," Lawlor said. "I backed off, my brain was a little scrambled, two or three landed. I feel good."

The loss was the third out of four during MacDonald's most recent UFC stint.

Igor Pokrajac Wins Slugfest Against Fabio Maldonado

Igor Pokrajac and Fabio Maldonado threw everything but the kitchen sink at one another on Tuesday night, as they went the full 15 minutes in their UFC on Fuel TV 3 light heavyweight bout.

In a potential fight of the night battle, which often seemed to come down to Pokrajac's attempted at landing knees from the clinch vs. Maldonado's boxing, Pokrajac was just a little bit better in the judges' eyes. Pokrajac won via unanimous decision, with scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28

Pokrajac has 18 first-round finishes in his career, and he worked for another one early in round one on the ground. Maldonado, though, rallied late in the round and began to score with his standup.

From there, the fight was on. Rounds two and three were back-and-forth affairs, with Pokrajac doing his most damage with knees from the clinch and Maldonado (18-5) wearing down the Croatian with combos to the head and body. While the fight seemed razor-thin, the judges all saw it Pokrajac's way.

With the victory, Pokrajac improved to 25-8 and has won four of his past five. Maldonado has now been on the wrong end of two debatable decisions, losing a fight of the night to Kyle Kingsbury last June.

Yves Jabouin Dominates Jeff Hougland

Yves Jabouin got everything but the finish on Tuesday night.
The Montreal-based fighter dominated his bantamweight bout against Jeff Hougland at UFC on Fuel TV 3 in Fairfax, Va., earning a unanimous decision on scores of 30-27, 30-26 and 30-27.

Round 1 was a one-sided affair. It looked to be finished when Jabouin connected with a spinning back kick to the midsection, which dropped Hougland. After initially hesitating, Jabouin began raining down punches and the fight appeared over, but referee Tom McGovern chose not to stop the bout as time ran out.

The next round was the only one in which Jabouin didn't come close to finishing. But in round three, Jabouin nailed Hougland with a big left hand early and swarmed him. McGovern again chose to let the fighters keep fighting. To Hougland's credit, he was game and toughed it out until the final bell.

Jabouin (18-7), who won for the fourth time in his past five UFC/WEC fights, said he wasn't surprised Hougland survived the big first-round kick.

"Not really," said Jabouin, who was cornered for his fight by UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. "Once that back kick sinks in, not a lot of guys can withstand it. He took it like a man, my hat's off to him."

Hougland dropped to 10-5, ending a nine-fight win streak.

Donald Cerrone Rebounds With Win Over Jeremy Stephens

What's a cowboy to do when he gets knocked off his horse? Why, get up, get back on, and start riding again, of course.

Lightweight "Cowboy" Donald Cerrone lost his last fight to Nate Diaz, putting a halt to his six-fight win streak. But Cerrone responded to the loss in fine form on Tuesday night, controlling the action from bell to bell in his UFC on Fuel TV 3 victory over Jeremy Stephens. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for the unanimous decision.

"It feels good coming off my last loss," said Cerrone, "There are some things I've been working on, thanks to [trainer] Greg Jackson."

Cerrone, a former kickboxer, simply dominated Stephens from the outset, mixing up a wide variety of strikes and pelting him with leg kicks. By the end of round two, Stephens had a bloody nose and his left eye was all but swollen shut.

The Colorado Springs native improved to 18-4 (1 no-contest), as he looks to climb his way back up the lightweight ranks. Stephens (20-8), who has been with the UFC since 2007, has dropped his past two.

After the bout, Cerrone credited his opponent and said he wants to fight in his home state at UFC 150 in Denver on August 11.

"That man did what he said he was going to do," said Cerrone. "I want to get on that Denver card. That's my hometown fight, I don't care if its Diaz or whoever, I want to be on that card."

Amir Sadollah Defeats Jorge Lopez

Not every fight on a UFC card is going to contend for fight of the night.

"The Ultimate Fighter 7" winner Amir Sadollah and Jorge Lopez met in a bout curiously placed in the co-main event position at Tuesday night's UFC on Fuel TV 3 card in Fairfax, Va.

After 15 minutes without much action of note, in which neither man came close to finishing the fight, Sadollah came out on the right end of a split decision, taking two of three 29-28 scores.

With the win, perhaps the welterweight Sadollah, who's been saddled with injuries since winning TUF, is finally developing some momentum. He's now 6-3 and has won three of his past four. Lopez, a Wand Fight Club team member in Las Vegas, is 11-3, having dropped both of his UFC fights.

Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Featherweight Chan Sung Jung has long been one of mixed martial arts' most popular fighters. Win or lose, "The Korean Zombie" has always provided fans with bang for their bucks.
But now he's no longer just an exciting name on the card. Now he's a legitimate title contender.

Jung scored the biggest victory of his career on Tuesday night, finishing young hotshot Dustin Poirier in a tremendous main event to UFC on Fuel TV 3. Jung used a D'Arce choke to win the bout at 1:07 of the fourth round.

The win was the third straight highlight-reel finish for the Pohang, South Korea native, following his twister win over Leonard Garcia and flash knockout of Mark Hominick.

Jung set the tone in the opening round, scoring a takedown and then delivering punishment from the mount. An elbow opened a cut on Poirier's head. Poirier had his moments, but Jung clearly won the round.

The second round was a memorable five-minute blur of action. Jung dropped Poirier (12-2) with a big knee, then put on a ground clinic, transitioning from an armbar to a triangle to another armbar to yet another triangle. Jung sunk in yet another triangle in the round's closing moments, but Poirier was saved by the bell.

Poirier had his best performance in round three. Jung was tired and dropped his hands. Poirier found his range with his left hand. But he never quite seized on the opening.

The end came early in round four, as the "Zombie" hit an uppercut and followed it with a knee. The fight went to the ground, where Jung cinched in the winning choke.

"He had me in trouble there at the beginning of the third round, the thought of giving up was in my head," Jung said through an interpreter. "But I just kept going and I got the win."

The win seems to put Jung next in line in the featherweight division, waiting for the winner of July's bout between champion Jose Aldo Jr. and Eric Koch. Jung left no doubt what he wants for his next fight, giving his response in English: "I want Jose Aldo."

Chan Sung Jung Cashes In with Double Bonus at UFC on FUEL 3

Chan Sung Jung is the UFC's human highlight reel.

In 2011, the "Korean Zombie" authored two of MMA's most memorable moments, producing the first Twister submission win in UFC history, and later scoring a 7-second knockout. In his first fight of 2012, he once again put on a show, this time on UFC on FUEL 3. Jung didn't just upset favorite Dustin Poirier in the main event, he also made a nice payday, earning two bonus awards for his brilliant winning performance.

Jung captured the Submission of the Night for his fourth-round D'arce choke victory, and he and Poirier earned Fight of the Night for their battle.

The two awards were worth an extra $80,000 on top of his contracted fight purse. He has now won nightly awards in all three of his UFC bouts.

Jung became the first fighter ever to stop Poirier in the process, and afterward, asked for a fight with featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Until the main event, it seemed a lock that a wild light-heavyweight scrap between Igor Pokrajac and Fabio Maldonado seemed destined for the Fight of the Night prize, only to be outdone.

Meanwhile, middleweight Tom Lawlor earned the $40,000 Knockout of the Night award after knocking out Jason MacDonald in just 50 seconds. Lawlor hurt him badly with a straight left, and then finished him with a right hook behind the ear.
