UFC on FX 4 Results: Ricardo Lamas Upsets Hatsu Hioki

Hatsu Hioki turned down a UFC featherweight title match, saying he wanted one more fight to prepare. It was a risky decision, and one that ultimately backfired.

The vaunted Japanese fighter was out-worked on his feet and out-grappled on the ground, losing a unanimous decision at UFC on FX 4. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for the American.

The fight started out well for Hioki, who put Lamas in some compromising positions in the first round, including a crucifix. He also had side control for a time, but was unable to do much with either position.

Illustrating excellent conditioning, Lamas took the fight over in the final two rounds, constantly threatening with a series of guillotine chokes. He also scored with the fight's hardest punches, including several left hooks, as he snapped Hioki's six-fight win streak and vaulted himself into contender status.

"I've been fighting for Zuffa for three years now, and not too many people who know me, so hopefully now they will," he said after being announced the winnner.

Lamas dedicated the performance to his recently deceased uncle.

Since moving to featherweight, Lamas is now 3-0, adding the victory of the top five Hioki to stoppage wins over Cub Swanson and Matt Grice. He's 12-2 overall.

Hioki fell to 26-5-2, and his decision to pass up a title shot against Jose Aldo may serve as a cautionary tale for future fighters who find themselves in a similar position.

Cub Swanson Knocks Out Ross Pearson

Cub Swanson has often been referred to as a snake-bit fighter for his inability to stay healthy and show his true promise. At UFC on FX 4, it was all on display. The Californian unleashed his striking speed and brilliance by outgunning Ross Pearson, ultimately leading to a second-round knockout.

The official time came at 4:14, with the finish coming from two right hands and a fall-away left hook that left Pearson crumpled against the cage.

Prior to that, Swanson had connected on all sorts of strikes, including a capoeira kick, and Pearson had seemingly been unfazed. Whether it was the effect of all the prior shots finally coming to a head or the finishing sequence, it was still an impressive finish.

"I was hitting him with a lot of shots and he didn't show he was getting hurt at all," Swanson said. "I'm real good at that exiting left hook. I hit him on the button, and he fell backwards. I tried to jump on him but it was already over."

Pearson had been considered the favorite to win the fight after looking impressive in his featherweight debut late last year in a win over Junior Assuncao. Instead, it was Swanson who left with the spoils.

Swanson improves to 17-5 on the strength of his second straight knockout win while Pearson fell to 13-6.

Brian Ebersole Grinds Out Win Over T.J. Waldburger

There is little substitute for quality experience, a fact that Brian Ebersole provided evidence for in his UFC on FX 4 match with T.J. Waldburger. After struggling through the first five minutes of their main card matchup, it was Ebersole who made the necessary adjustments to emerge victorious.

In a grappling-heavy fight, Ebersole was able to grind out the final two rounds against the submission specialist en route to a unanimous decision victory by 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 scores.

It was the 11th straight win for Ebersole, but it didn't come without adversity.

Waldburger nearly finished the fight in short order. About one minute into the first, Waldburger dropped Ebersole with a short left hand, then pounced on the ground, where he does his best work. He worked a D'arce, but the veteran Ebersole was able to snake his way out of it.

The performance was enough to win the round for Waldburger, meaning Ebersole needed to win the final two or earn a finish to keep his streak intact.

He scored takedowns in each of the final rounds, fought off multiple submission attempts by the active Waldburger, and landed hard punches and elbows when opportunities opened up.

Ebersole's victory was the 50th of his pro career, as he improved to 50-14-1 with 1 no contest.

Waldburger saw his two-fight win streak snapped, as the loss dropped him to 15-7.

Sam Stout Defeats Spencer Fisher In Trilogy Finale

If it is the last time for Spencer Fisher, his happy ending was not to be.

After announcing he was likely to retire following his UFC on FX 4 trilogy fight with Sam Stout, Fisher couldn't close out his career the way he hoped for, instead suffering a unanimous decision loss by identical 30-27 scores.

Fisher didn't perform badly. In fact, his standup looked sharper and quicker than it has at any point over the last two years, but he was undone by his inability to stop a takedown.

Stout took the fight to the ground at least once in every round, and used the positional advantage to steal rounds that he might have otherwise lost.

Fisher never badly hurt Stout, but he did cause swelling under his right eye due to his consistent targeting of the area. He certainly got the better of many exchanges, particularly in the first when he was still fresh. But Stout showed off an improved wrestling game, time after time changing things up and relocating the fight to a more advantageous position.

Notably, it was the first win for Stout since the passing of his coach and brother-in-law Shawn Tompkins, who died of a heart attack last August. He's now 18-7-1.

Stout won the series opener with Fisher back in March 2006 via split decision, while Fisher evened the score the next year, taking a unanimous decision. Five years later, Stout can claim ultimate victory.

If it is the end for Fisher, the veteran closes a decade-long career with a mark of 24-9

Gray Maynard Takes Split-Decision Over Clay Guida

The UFC on FX 4 main event between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida was supposed to be a can't-miss thriller. Instead, the fight took a turn into the land of the bizarre, with periods of inactivity, a referee warning for failure to engage, taunting, an audience turn and a frantic finish.

It all added up to a split-decision win for Maynard, who won his first post-Frankie Edgar fight, taking the bout by scores of 48-47, 48-47, 47-48.

Guida walked into the cage -- "bounced" into it is a more apt description -- as the overwhelming crowd favorite, but minute-by-minute, round-by-round he lost them. That was because of his constant insistence on moving away from any engagement.

Maynard spent much of the two opening two rounds stalking Guida, but could hardly ever catch him to land anything at all. At times, his movement was simple and effective evasion from a dangerous situation. At other times, it could more simply be described as running away.

By the end of the third round, Maynard was visibly frustrated.

In the very next round, that emotion surfaced, playing a key role when Maynard backed Guida up to the fence, and as Guida started to move away, Maynard dropped his hands to his side and verbally taunted him, offering his chin as a target. Guida took the opportunity to throw three strikes, and Maynard never even raised his hands to defend himself, he was so unconcerned with Guida's power. Then Guida ducked low for the takedown, and Maynard sprawled before trying a guillotine.

With that, any remaining members of the Atlantic City, New Jersey crowd that were originally rooting for Guida completely swung in Maynard's favor, so thrilled that he'd lured Guida into some sustained offense. Maynard didn't get the submission as Guida slammed his way free, but the fight was swinging in his direction.

In the fifth, Maynard again basically opened up his defense hoping for Guida to wade in, but he mostly resisted until referee Dan Miragliotta called timeout to warn Guida he would take a point away if he continued to fail to engage. Maynard flurried soon after, and taking the final round likely stole the victory from Guida.

Before the official result was read, the Revel Casino crowd chanted Maynard's name, and received their wish when he was announced as the winner improving to 11-1-1 with 1 no contest while Guida fell to 29-13.

"I thought Guida was coming to fight," Maynard said afterward. "I came to fight. I came to get bloody, have fun. I wanted to prove I could go a hard five."

While Maynard had walked in as the betting favorite, it was Guida who was believed to have the advantage if the fight went into the late rounds. But in this bizarro world where Clay Guida suddenly became boring, the unlikely became the norm.

UFC on FX 4 Bonuses: Cub Swanson Takes Home 'Knockout of the Night'

Cub Swanson, Spencer Fisher, Sam Stout, and Dan Miller all earned $50,000 post-fight bonuses in the aftermath of UFC on FX 4, which took place at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, NJ.

Swanson steamrolled his way to 'Knockout of the Night,' dropping Ross Pearson with a flawless three-punch combination midway through the second round of the pair's main card tussle. With the victory, the WEC veteran seized his first two-fight winning streak since 2008.

"I was hitting him with a lot of shots and he didn't show he was getting hurt at all," an elated Swanson said afterward. "I'm real good at that exiting left hook. I hit him on the button, and he fell backwards. I tried to jump on him but it was already over."

Meanwhile, Stout and Fisher took home 'Fight of the Night' honors for the electrifying conclusion of their five-year trilogy, and Miller was awarded 'Submission of the Night' after tapping out Ricardo Funch with a guillotine choke on the Facebook undercard.

Dana White on Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida: 'That's Not a Fight'

Ariel Helwani spoke to UFC president Dana White on the FUEL TV post-fight show to get his reaction to the UFC on FX 4 main event between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida. While there might have been plenty of post-fight debate on Twitter, White saw no such controversy. He blasted Guida's performance and his game plan, saying, "Some goof put in his head that running around in circles might win him the fight, and they were dead wrong."

White also had strong words for the judges who saw it as a 48-47 split decision for Maynard. They had the right fighter winning, White said, but "how they had that fight that close...it was a blowout by Gray Maynard."

According to White, Guida's strategy in the fight was his undoing right from the start. "You don’t win a fight by running, ever," White told Helwani, before adding that he was pleased to see referee Dan Miragliotta halt the fight in the fifth round to issue Guida a warning for timidity. "That’s what they’re supposed to do."
