Jun 22, 2012: Alistair is helping Tyrone Spong for his upcoming fight against Peter Aerts on 30 june in Belgium. We spoke to Alistair after his training with Tyrone and ask him some questions about how it’s like to train with his old training partner.
How is it to train with Tyrone Spong?
He’s a great sparring partner and we can help each other out when we have a fight coming up.
You trained 7 years ago, is it any different now?
7 years ago we were young and at a different place, now we are working together like a team. Tyrone has an important fight next week and therefore I’m helping him out. Just like he helped Rashad for his fight and he will help me for my fight is it now our turn to help him to be as prepared as he can be. We serve him now and make sure he’s victorious next week.
You fought Peter Aerts twice so you must have some tips for Tyrone, can you share them with us?
I’m not going to give away anything as it’s something between us but I can tell you that he will win this fight. He’s very sharp and motivated and he has a extraordinary talent but now he’s matured and experienced at heavyweight so I expect a short fight next week.
What do you expect of the fight?
This fight will be over in one round, Tyrone is now a completely different fighter and although I like Peter very much and wish him the best but next time he should pick another fighter for his farewell fight because Tyrone is too much to handle for him now.
What do you think of Tyrone in M.M.A.
He’s working hard to be a more complete fighter and I think he can do just fine. He’s pretty young and still learns, he’s not just a fighter but an athlete, so he picks up things pretty fast. He's taking one step at a time and I'm going to help him to be ready for his first M.M.A. fight.
You are in Miami now, how is it to be back in the States?
It’s great, I honestly can say that I consider Florida my new home. I was in Holland for a couple of days, a weekend in London and a week in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and coming back to Miami felt like being back home.
