Hacran Dias Snaps Yuri Alcantara's Winning Streak

On Friday, the UFC lost Hatsu Hioki as a possible featherweight title contender when the top-five fighter was upset at UFC on FX 4. On Saturday, the promotion lost another one, as top-10 Yuri Alcantara saw his long winning streak snapped by Hacran Dias.

Dias used his wrestling prowess to control the fight's pace and location, scoring six takedowns along the way en route to a unanimous decision. The judges scored it 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 for him

The underdog Dias came out strong in the first, immediately shooting for a takedown and eventually getting it against the fence. He briefly worked for an arm triangle but couldn't get the proper positioning to finish it. Despite that, his ground control likely won him the round.

Dias successfully finished two takedowns in the second round, and although he had to withstood a nearly locked-in arm bar, his grinding work from the top position and a guard-pass earned him points along the way.

Alcantara had his best round in the third as he was able to stay upright for prolonged periods, allowing him to land strikes. But after losing the first two rounds, he needed a finish, and he never came close to getting it.

In winning his ninth straight, Dias improved to 21-1-1, while Alcantara's 13-fight win streak came to an end, dropping him to 27-4.

According to the UFC, the fight was the 2,000th in the promotion's history.

Fabricio Werdum Knocks Out Mike Russow, Wants Junior dos Santos

After years of being known as a ground specialist, Fabricio Werdum is proving he's a fully rounded mixed martial artist. The Brazilian heavyweight dropped the durable American Mike Russow with a blistering uppercut before finishing him with ground strikes.

The fight took just 2:28, and afterward, Werdum moved his eye to current heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos.

"I know he's a champion, but I'm ready for him," he said.

Werdum was actually the man who first welcomed dos Santos to the octagon. At the time, no one had any idea just how good dos Santos was, and he surprised Werdum by knocking him out in just 81 seconds.

Since that time, Werdum has spent much of his time improving his own standup so he would not be outgunned in the future. In recent fights, the fruits of his labors have shown as he's added variety and power to his striking, and against Russow, it all came to a head with a stoppage win.

Russow (15-2, 1 no contest) had never before been knocked out.

"I'm training a lot of muay thai," he said. "I just want you to know how happy I'm feeling. It's really, really emotional for me"
It was the second straight win for Werdum since moving over from Strikeforce (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/promotion/strikeforce) to the UFC. He's 16-5-1 overall.

Rony Mariano Beats Godofredo Pepy In TUF Brazil Featherweight Final

Rony Mariano is Brazil's first-ever "Ultimate Fighter."

The featherweight won the divisional final of the Brazilian edition of TUF, held on the main card of UFC 147, defeating Godofredo Pepey by unanimous decision. He took two of the three rounds, earning identical 29-28 scores from all three judges.

Compared to some of the fireworks the night had seen by then, the fight was relatively lackluster, with Pepey trying hard to bring the fight to the ground, resorting to pulling guard on several occasions. It didn't matter, as he could do little from the bottom position.

It was an emotional journey for Mariano, who goes by "Jason." He walked into the cage with tears in his eyes, and left it the same way after being overcome by everything he'd experienced leading up to his big night.

"It's a great honor for me," he said through an interpreter. "I've been hungry sometimes. I've been without a home, but you can always dream. Just go out and make it happen."

The first round was closely contested with Pepey choosing to pull guard twice, leaving him in a position where he ate some punches while hunting a submission, but he never came close despite working hard for a kimura midway through. Mariano had the two best moments of the round with a flying knee that connected and a big slam takedown.

Pepey pulled guard again in the second, but it was a decision that backfired as he couldn't find anything from the bottom while Mariano connected with punches and elbows. Mariano eventually let him up and landed the round's most significant strikes.

Mariano had few problems in the third, ensuring the win.

He's now 11-3 overall, and for his efforts, wins a UFC contract.

Cezar Ferreira Beats Sergio Moraes in TUF Brazil Middleweight Final

It was supposed to be an easy night for Cezar Ferreira, facing a fighter who had already lost in the TUF Brazil competition. Ferreira escaped with the win and the middleweight crown, but not without a major scare.

His opponent Sergio Moraes badly hurt him late in the second round with an elbow and a series of strikes that had him reeling backwards against the cage, but after surviving that onslaught, Ferreira out-pointed him for the win at UFC 147.

The judges scored it 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 for "Mutante."

Moments before Ferreira got hurt, he seemed to have the fight in hand, using his size advantage and a more varied striking game to seemingly take control.

But Moraes was game, throwing wild combinations particularly in close quarters. While he was more heart than technique, his wild power punches occasionally found their mark, threatening Ferreira and slowing his attack.

Ferreira nearly got a finish early in the second when he hurt Moraes with a kick and knocked him down with a flurry. But he was hesitant to go to the ground with the jiu-jitsu specialist, and instead allowed him to get to his feet, giving Moraes valuable recovery time.

It wasn't the dominant performance many expected from Ferreira, but it was enough to win the TUF crown and a UFC contract. He's now 5-2 in his pro career.

Rich Franklin Survives Scare, Beats Wanderlei Silva

Sixteen months after he last stepped into a UFC octagon, Rich Franklin is back in the win column. But not without a scare.

While Franklin exhibited no discernible ring rust, controlling the vast majority of the fight with his clean striking, he had to avert a late second-round disaster after Wanderlei Silva floored him with a right hook and blitzed him looking for the finish in the final seconds.

Franklin managed to hold on and survive, and then cruised through the final rounds en route to the UFC 147 victory in the sequel to their 2009 fight. All three judges scored the bout in his favor 49-46.

Afterward, Franklin admitted that he didn't remember most of the action after getting knocked down, letting his training take him through to the finish.

"When that kinds of stuff happens, you remember bits and pieces," he said. "My coach told me not to get greedy, to pick my punches. I thought I did a good job of that. I was operating on autopilot."

Franklin also won the first fight between the two back at UFC 99, though that was by split-decision.

Franklin did a good job pumping out his jab repeatedly and staying out of multi-strike exchanges, leaving Silva waiting for a counter that was rarely there.

Things changed wildly in the second, when Silva used one of his PRIDE-era blitzkrieg attacks to drop him. He swarmed with an endless series of strikes, and referee Mario Yamasaki carefully watched the action, which could have been stopped on more than one occasion. Franklin kept moving though, and Yamasaki let things continue. The round seemed like it could have been enough for a 10-8, though all the judges scored it 10-9 for Silva.

As it turns out, that didn't matter. Silva expended a great deal of energy in looking for the finish, as he didn't come out for the third with the same bounce he'd had just moments prior. Franklin, meanwhile, recovered brilliantly between rounds, re-establishing his control of range and timing with jabs and straight lefts. He also scored a takedown in the round's final minute to ensure he'd sway the judges.

Silva didn't look any better in the fourth, and could only manage one final swarm in the fifth that wasn't enough to either finish the fight or convince the judges he'd done enough. He later admitted he'd gassed himself out hoping for a highlight-reel finish before his fellow Brazilians.

"I think I pushed it a bit too much, but I really wanted to knock him out," he said.

Franklin is now 29-6 with 1 no contest, with the win marking his first victory since he knocked Chuck Liddell out and into retirement in June 2010. Silva is 34-12-1 with 1 no contest. He's now lost four of his last six.

UFC 147 Bonuses: Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva Rematch Earns 'Fight of the Night'

Just like the first time around, Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva took home ‘Fight of the Night' honors for their back-and-forth brawl at the main event of UFC 147. Both men, who met previously at UFC 99 to similar results, earned $65,000 in post-fight bonus money for their performance.

Franklin was nearly finished in the closing moments of round two, yet the American miraculously made it to the bell and proceeded to retake the momentum over his winded foe, ultimately claiming the judges' decision.

"When that kinds of stuff happens, you remember bits and pieces," Franklin joked afterward. "My coach told me not to get greedy, to pick my punches. I thought I did a good job of that. I was operating on autopilot."

The remaining post-fight bonuses went to hometown fighters, as TUF Brazil contestants Rodrigo Damm and Marcus Vinicius each earned $65,000 for their undercard victories.

Damm submitted Anistavio Medeiros via rear-naked choke in two minutes to cash in a ‘Submission of the Night' award, while Vinicius bruised his way to a third-round TKO finish of Wagner Campos to take home ‘Knockout of the Night' honors.

Dana White Not Happy With TUF Brazil Winner Rony 'Jason' Mariano

For Rony Mariano, it was the night of a lifetime, the Brazilian featherweight living out a dream by winning TUF Brazil with a victory at Saturday night's UFC 147. The unanimous decision over Godofredo Pepey gave him a contract in the world's leading fight promotion. That's the good news.

The bad news is that he won't exactly be starting off his octagon career on Dana White's good side, as the UFC president was quite critical of his performance, even in victory.

"I didn’t like it at all," he said in a post-event interview on FUEL TV. "I think that these guys from the Ultimate Fighter Brazil came out like killers in the fight to get into the house, and then all season long. I think because it's such a big event, this place was crazy, it was rocking, they were signing autographs all day. I think they got a little caught up in the hype. Guess what? You’re not in the UFC yet. Come out and you have to perform."

Mariano, who goes by the nickname "Jason," won the fight by a trio of 29-28 scores but the fight was marked by some periods of inactivity, though it wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

White did note that he was in a bad mood given the events of the previous night, perhaps referencing the bizarre Clay Guida vs. Gray Maynard fight at UFC on FX 4.

The Mariano-Pepey fight was nothing like that one, but White felt that the combatants didn't show the drive and desire that often comes from two fighters competing for a UFC contract.

"Usually the finale is the best fight of the season," he said. "These guys come out and they go for it. I think because the arena was packed and these guys felt like rockstars all week, they were coming out singing and dancing and s--- like they already had world titles. It was kind of weird."

White's criticism didn't extend to TUF middleweight champ Cezar Ferreira, who survived a battle with Sergio Moraes in a decision win.

"That fight was better," he said. "I was happy with that fight, but not 100 percent thrilled with the night."
