UFC 149 Bonuses: Ryan Jimmo Debuts With Knockout of the Night

Ryan Jimmo couldn't have asked for a better Octagon debut. Fighting on the UFC 149 undercard, Jimmo needed just seven seconds to flatten Anthony Perosh with an overhand right and extend his impressive win streak to 17 straight.

The native Canadian pocketed $65,000 for his ‘Knockout of the Night' performance.

"He's a big, strong guy, so I went at him," Jimmo ecstatically said afterward. "I knew if I throw some heavy leather, he was going to be on the bad end of it."

Undercard fighters Bryan Caraway and Mitch Gagnon, and pay-per-view opener Matt Riddle were the remaining bonus winners.

Both Caraway and Gagnon took home $65,000 for their ‘Fight of the Night' brawl, while Riddle secured his ‘Submission of the Night' bonus with a slick third-round arm-triangle of Chris Clements.

"I made sure I banged a little, but I got back to my roots to get that 'W,'" Riddle later quipped.

Ryan Jimmo Debuts With Seven-Second KO

Ryan Jimmo has waited years to make his UFC debut, but he didn't spend much time in the octagon.

The 30-year-old Canadian made an instant impact, shocking veteran Anthony Perosh and the Calgary fans with a seven-second knockout win during the UFC 149 preliminary card.

The two touched gloves and moments later, Jimmo landed his first punch, an overhand right that sent Perosh crashing down to the canvas. One punch later and it was all over in what will go down as one of the best octagon debuts ever.

"I know I throw some heavy leather," Jimmo said. "He was on the bad end of it."

The UFC announced the time of the KO at 7 seconds and said it tied Duane Ludwig for the fastest KO in octagon history.

However, late last year, the UFC announced that Ludwig's 2006 knockout of Jonathan Goulet had been re-timed and recorded at six seconds.

Todd Duffee had previously had the fastest official knockout, with a seven-second finish of Tim Hague in August 2009.

Regardless of whether or not it actually tied the mark, it was a brilliant first act for Jimmo (17-1), who pushed his win streak to 17 straight.

The Aussie Perosh had a three-fight win streak snapped in the devastating defeat, falling to 13-7.

Nick Ring Outlasts Court McGee in Bloody Fight

The sequel ended with the same winner as the original.
In a bloody, grueling affair, Nick Ring outlasted Court McGee en route to a unanimous decision victory at UFC 149. All three judges scored it 29-28 for Ring.

The two had first faced off during the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter, and Ring won, but was later injured and forced off the season. McGee took advantage of the opening and went on to win the season.

Two years later, Ring won again, but it was no easy fight. Ring looked good early scoring with his straight left hand against the orthodox fighter McGee.

But as he does, McGee turned the bout into a dogfight, and by the end of the second, both fighters were bloodied, and the action started trending his way. A series of straight lefts from Ring late probably won him the second round, which would prove to be pivotal as the third was all McGee. He stalked Ring around the cage and beat him up from the clinch and with dirty boxing.

Ring did his best to hold on, and made it to the final bell before being awarded the victory.

Both fighters had been coming off defeats, so it was Ring who found his way back into the win column quicker, moving to 13-1. McGee's second straight loss gives him a 13-3 record.

Matt Riddle Beats Chris Clements By Submission

Living up to his nickname of "Deep Waters," Matt Riddle dragged Chris Clements into the late rounds of their UFC 149 matchup before earning a third-round submission by arm triangle choke.

Riddle got it locked in while standing and tripped Clements to the ground and into side control, where he immediately tightened it further and got the tap.

The official time of the victory was 2:02 of the third round.

The two had battled back and forth throughout, with Riddle showing his grappling superiority but Clements landing most of the fight's significant standup shots, with the exception of a first-round liver kick which referee Josh Rosenthal mistakenly believed was a low blow.

That blip aside, Riddle seemed as though he could take Clements down whenever he wanted, but chose to exchange with him for short bursts before going back to his bread and better.

"I made sure I banged a little, but I got back to my roots to get that 'W,'" he said.

It was the second straight win for Riddle, who is now 7-3.

In losing, Clements had a five-fight losing streak snapped. The defeat makes him 11-5.

James Head Ends Brian Ebersole's Win Streak In Decision Victory

Brian Ebersole's 11-fight win streak is history, thanks to James Head's strong takedown defense and superior striking.Head outworked and outmuscled the crafty Ebersole throughout the 15-minute fight, eventually earning a split-decision win at UFC 149.

The judges scored it 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

Ebersole spent a lot of time trying to get the fight to the ground, but Head stuffed one attempt after another, particularly in the final round when Ebersole might have sensed he was playing from behind. As a result, the tactical battle wasn't a crowd-pleaser, but it was enough to get Head his second UFC win.

Head certainly landed the best standup shots in the battle in improving to 8-3.

Ebersole had taken the fight on short notice, and he never really got his offense going in this one. The loss dropped him to 50-14-1 with 1 no contest, and afterward, he seemed to indicate to UFC announcer Joe Rogan that he would soon be moving down a division to the lightweight class.

Ebersole had been 4-0 in the octagon heading into the match.

Cheick Kongo Defeats Shawn Jordan

The move up to the level of Cheick Kongo was too much, too soon for Shawn Jordan.
The former Louisiana State University football player lasted all 15 minutes, but had little success against the octagon veteran. Kongo won the UFC 149 encounter by scores of 30-28, 30-27, 30-27

Jordan only got the main card slot after Kongo's original opponent Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira determined he wouldn't be healed from an injured arm in time for the fight.

The fight was a largely lackluster affair, with the Scotiabank Saddledome crowd lustily booing long stretch of inaction. While the fight itself was grueling, with long periods of clinchwork, there were hardly the fireworks that usually come with a heavyweight bout.

Kongo had no problem stopping the takedown as Jordan couldn't take him to the mat a single time. Jordan had his sole opportunity late in the second after Kongo made a tactical error and Jordan ended up on top, but he couldn't land anything of significance.

The rest of the fight was mostly Kongo moving him around the cage, and he did land several hard right hands, although nearly every hard punch he scored on was a single strike with nothing else behind it.

In rebounding from his February knockout loss to Mark Hunt, Kongo upped his career record to 18-7-2, while Jordan saw his two-fight win streak snapped, making him 13-4.

Tim Boetsch Upsets Hector Lombard In Split-Decision

Hector Lombard's long unbeaten streak is over. The UFC newcomer came in having not tasted defeat in his last 25 fights, but he left with the bitter taste in his mouth after his UFC 149 co-main event with Tim Boetsch.

The slow-paced fight saw little in the way of significant strikes, but Boetsch seemed to at least control the pace, and two of the judges felt he did enough to earn the decision. They scored it 29-28 for Boetsch while the third scored it for Lombard 29-28, giving Boetsch the upset win.

Making his long-anticipated UFC debut, Lombard looked flat from beginning to end. While he did land a few powerful strikes, Boetsch was never in any sustained trouble, and Lombard never followed up with anything dangerous. His single strikes added up slowly, and in the meantime, Boetsch was landing kicks from the outside.

Neither man truly took control of the action, leaving things in doubt until the final scores were read off.

Lombard -- the former Bellator champion -- had been seen as a possible challenger to long-reigning champ Anderson Silva (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122568/anderson-silva), but now it's to the back of the line for him while Boetsch will move on to greater opportunity.

Lombard's first loss since 2006 makes him 31-3-1 with 1 no contest.

On the strength of a four-fight win streak, Boetsch is now 16-4.

Renan Barao Beats Urijah Faber for Interim Bantamweight Belt

Urijah Faber might have seen his last chance at gold.

"The California Kid" couldn't get it done at UFC 149, couldn't solve Renan Barao's length, couldn't get the fight to the ground, and couldn't sway the judges. Instead, it was Barao fighting from distance with jabs, kicks and long right hands making the impact. As a result, Barao captured the UFC interim bantamweight championship, cruising to a unanimous decision win by scores of 50-45, 49-46, 49-46.

The fight was not the exciting showcase many expected. Both Faber and Barao were somewhat tentative, keeping the action at a respectful distance. Faber's offense was fairly one-dimensional, heavy on a straight right hand. Given his reach disadvantage, that punch had little success, and Barao was able to hit him from the outside.

Later on, Faber tried to adjust by emphasizing his wrestling, but Barao easily stuffed the attempts and kept the fight standing, where he had an advantage.

Barao seemed well schooled for what was to come. At times in the past, he's overexerted himself early in looking for the finish and faded late, but in this one he fought smart and paced himself in anticipation of the 25-minute maximum.

"I came very well prepared for everything," Barao said afterward. "Faber is a great athlete, a great fighter, but I was very well prepared and that's the result."

Barao was overjoyed at the result, but given the lackluster fights that had come before the main event, he and Faber faced heavy boos even though their fight was more tactical battle than snoozer.

Barao will now take his 30-fight unbeaten stretch into a title match with champion Dominick Cruz when Cruz returns from his knee rehabilitation. He's 29-1 with 1 no contest overall.

For Faber, it was a fifth straight loss in major title fights dating back to his WEC days. Afterward, he said that he probably broke a rib during the fight. The loss dropped him to 26-6.

Typisch...
