UFC on FOX 4 Bonuses: Joe Lauzon Earns $100,000 For Fight, Sub of Night

UFC on FOX 4 turned out one of the best main cards in the recent history of the promotion. All four fights ended with decisive finishes, and three of them were absolute wars. But there are only a few nightly bonus awards to hand out, and Joe Lauzon took two of the big ones.

The Massachusetts-based lightweight who is known for his swarming, exciting style, took both the Submission of the Night and the Fight of the Night, earning himself $100,000 in the process.

Lauzon fought Jamie Varner, and the two threw down in a back-and-forth battle that saw both men in trouble at various times.
Finally, in the third, Lauzon used an impressive sweep on a takedown to set up a triangle, and eventually got Varner to tap out. Though Varner lost, he'll have $50,000 to soothe his pain for Fight of the Night as well.

The Knockout of the Night award went to the returning Mike Swick, who earned an emotional win in his first fight back after 30 months.

Swick KO'd DeMarques Johnson in the second round, taking Johnson down and following him with a booming right hand. His finish was also worth $50,000.

Phil Davis' Eye Poke Leads to No Contest

Phil Davis came to UFC on FOX 4 looking to restart his lost momentum stemming from his recent defeat at the hands of Rashad Evans. Instead, Davis will have to wait even longer.

Early in the first round of his bout with Wagner Prado, Davis reached out with his left hand to push the charging Prado away.

Instead, his fingers raked across Prado's right eye. A timeout was called, but Prado's eye quickly swelled and the referee ruled that Prado could not continue.

The result of the unintentional foul, which came at 1:28 of the round, was a no contest.

The referee's decision was a bit controversial, as Prado immediately protested his ruling to halt the action. UFC broadcasters Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg insinuated that there may have been a language barrier for the Brazilian Prado in communication the extent of his vision issues.

At any rate, the two left with no damage to their personal records.

Davis is 9-1 with 1 no contest, while Prado keeps his unbeaten streak intact at 8-0 with 1 no contest.

Nam Phan Beats Cole Miller in Split-Decision

Nam Phan's reputation as one of the UFC's most exciting featherweights remains intact after his UFC on FOX 4 fight with Cole Miller. The performance got Phan back into the win column as well, as he took a split-decision victory by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

The first round was all Phan, as he showed a superiority in striking by cutting off the cage and working Miller against the fence. Phan did his best work there, especially with repeated combinations that featured hooks to the body and head.

Miller seemed to figure out his problem in the second, keeping the fight centered and using his considerable reach advantage to keep Phan at bay. Miller got a lot more active and a lot more accurate as a result, and got himself back into the fight.

But his comfort factor was quickly erased to start the third when Phan hurt him with a right hand. Phan became the aggressor, chasing Miller around and battering him with power punches. Miller, getting weary of the attack, finally tried the fight's first takedown about 1:30 into the round, but was easily stuffed. Emboldened by that, Phan continued his assault, though Miller came on late in an attempt to steal the round, taking it on one judge's scorecard.

It's the second win in the last three fights for Phan, who improved to 17-11.

It was the second straight loss for Miller, who is now 0-2 as a featherweight, and 18-7 overall.

Mike Swick Knocks Out DeMarques Johnson

Thirty months of frustration came out for Mike Swick on Saturday night.

Thirty months of inactivity, of illness and injury, all reduced to a few moments of violence that should help put the past behind him. After a wild first round, Swick ended things decisively in the second. He caught a leg kick, put DeMarques Johnson on his back, and hammered him with a diving overhand right that knocked Johnson cold. Swick got in two more shots before referee Herb Dean stepped in.

The official stop was at 1:20 of the second round.

"Hey guys, remember me?" he asked to a huge ovation in the seconds after the finish.
The two fought a spectacular first.

Swick opened with a blasting right hand that buckled Johnson, but Johnson weathered the storm and put Swick on his back to gain recovery time. Swick got back to his feet and scored with standing strikes, but Johnson again put the fight on the mat and performed well from the position, drilling Swick repeatedly with rights and lefts, and opening cuts under both of his eyes. It was a close round.

Swick came out looking tired in the second, but perhaps he was just biding his time for the right opportunity, and it came on Johnson's lazy leg kick, and it was over in a violent instant.

"I wanted to get a knockout tonight," he said.

The win was the first for Swick since June 2009, when he beat Ben Saunders at UFC 99. Swick is now 15-4.

Johnson, who lost his second in a row, fell to 16-11.

Joe Lauzon Submits Jamie Varner in Thriller

The year 2012 may not have seen a better fight than the scrap between Joe Lauzon and Jamie Varner at UFC on FOX 4.

The lightweights fought a riveting back-and-forth battle that had a little bit of everything. Momentum swings, power striking, submission threats. And ultimately, it had a finish. It was the dangerous Lauzon who used an incredible sweep to transition into a triangle choke that brought about the tapout at 2:44 of round three.

The end came during a moment where it seemed like Varner was about to take control. He shot in a powerful double leg takedown, and put Lauzon on his back, but Lauzon used his double-overhooks to sweep and ended up on top. As Varner tried to scramble free, Lauzon locked on the triangle choke. Varner tried to adjust his positioning to free his blood flow, but Lauzon readjusted with him and tightened the hold, forcing the tap.

The rest of the fight was just as exciting from the opening bell. Varner brought his usual power striking game, staggering Lauzon on two occasions, and hurting him several other times.

The seasoned Lauzon weathered the storm repeatedly and found his own opportunities, particularly late in rounds when Varner lost some of the steam off his shots.

Lauzon had a great moment late in the second when he got Varner down and worked him over against the mat. He tried an arm triangle near the end of the round but didn't have enough space and abandoned the hold.

The two shared an embrace to start the third, but then went back to war, with Varner flashing more striking threats with a series of elbows before the finishing sequence.

The surefire fight of the night left Lauzon with a 22-7 record while the hard-luck loser Varner fell to 20-7-1 with 2 no contest.

Lyoto Machida KO's Ryan Bader

As the UFC on FOX 4 co-main event wore on, you could sense Ryan Bader getting more and more frustrated. He couldn't navigate the distance necessary to hit Machida, and certainly couldn't get close enough to initiate a takedown. Faced with that quandary, Bader chose to take the direct path and rush him.
Bad move.

Machida perfectly timed the charge, uncoiling a right hand that knocked Bader cold.

The finish came at 1:32 of the second round.

Given UFC president Dana White's pre-fight announcement that the most impressive of the four main card light-heavyweights would earn a title fight, Machida set the bar for Mauricio Rua and Brandon Vera.

"I feel very well," Machida said afterward. "I think it was a great performance. I want to say, 'The Dragon's back.'"

As usual, Machida got off to a slow start, trying to draw Bader in with his feints and hand movement. Bader took his time but occasionally jumped in with wild right hands that missed badly. Machida soon walloped him with a kick to the body that left Bader marked up. By the end of the first round, it was clear that Machida was in control of the standup.

Facing that scenario, Bader tried to initiate action, but his charge was met with extreme resistance.

Fighting for the first time since his loss to Jones, Machida improved his record to 18-3.

Bader had his two-fight win streak snapped, and he's now 14-3.

Shogun Rua Outlasts Game Brandon Vera With 4th-Round TKO

Brandon Vera was supposed to fold in the presence of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. At least, that's what most thought, given the lopsided odds that had Rua favored by as much as 5-to-1 by the time the UFC on FOX 4 main event went off.

It wasn't quite so easy for Rua. In fact, it wasn't easy at all. Vera came to battle, and put a scare in Rua for three-and-a-half rounds, until Rua could finally put him away with a fourth-round knockout

The finish came at 4:09 of the round, after Rua crushed Vera with a left hook. Vera was so stunned that he tried to adjust his mouthpiece, and Rua pounced, savaging him with a series of strikes until Vera went down and Rua added a few more ground strikes before the ref stepped in between them.

"Brandon Vera is a very good fighter, I respect him," Rua said. "I don't give my best today but I'll give my best in the future."
Rua said he was hit by fatigue between the second and third rounds of the fight, and was slowed down by it.

But even before that, Vera let him know that he was in for a true fight. From the beginning, Vera was firing off combinations and exhibiting heart by withstanding Rua's power barrages. At several points, Rua seemed to have him in trouble against the cage, only to see Vera come off and fire back at him.

Vera's best round was in the second when he scored with several elbows. The Staples Center crowd got behind the underdog, chanting his name, and Vera responded by taking Rua down and keeping him there until the end of the round.

But summoning the championship heart that made him both a PRIDE and UFC champion, Rua was able to reassert himself and eventually finish the game challenger.

It was the second straight war for Rua, who was coming off his November 2010 Fight of the Year with Dan Henderson. The win moved him to 21-6. Vera fell to 12-6 with 1 no contest.

Dana White: Lyoto Machida Earns No. 1 Contender Slot After UFC On FOX 4 Win

Before UFC on FOX 4, UFC president Dana White announced that the winner of the Mauricio Rua vs. Brandon Vera main event would be next in the queue to fight for the division's champion. After receiving backlash, he revised his decision, saying the main card light-heavyweight with the most impressive performance would be next.

As it turns out, that change will end up making a huge difference in the life of Lyoto Machida, because after strong finishes by both Machida and Mauricio Rua in main card fights, White had a choice to make.

He ultimately chose "the Dragon."

White made his announcement on FOX, shortly after the main event, saying that Machida's win, which was far more one-sided, got him the shot. He also noted that Machida had been more competitive against current champion Jon Jones, fighting a close first round with him before losing by technical submission the second.

"What I can tell you is he wants it bad," White said in the event's post-fight press conference. "That’s very important to me is how bad a guy wants it, and he wants it bad."

Rua had also previously faced Jones, losing to him in March 2011 in the fight which saw Jones crowned as the champion.

Of course, it's no guarantee that Jones will be the man standing across from Machida when he cashes in his chip. First, Jones will have to defend his belt against former PRIDE two-division champion Dan Henderson in a fight that goes down on September 1.

Whichever man it is, Machida, who is 18-3 all-time, will be waiting.

Shogun Rua Unbothered By Being Passed Over for Title Shot

Once upon a time, all Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had to do was win. All he needed was a simple victory, by even the narrowest of margins, and a title shot was his. But that was before the backlash. The fans weren't on board with the decision, even though it probably had more to do with the possibility that his opponent, Brandon Vera, could also claim a title shot with a win. But UFC president Dana White heard the complaints, and amended his decision.

Instead of the UFC on FOX 4 main event winner getting an automatic pass to fight for gold, the possibility was extended to the co-main eventers. And when both Rua and Lyoto Machida won by knockout, it was Machida who was selected for the shot while Rua is thrown back into the division's general population.

If the decision upset Rua, he did a good job of hiding it.

"It’s OK, I respect the decision," he said during the event's post-fight press conference. "I’ll keep training, and if Lyoto has the chance, good luck, and let’s move on."

Rua has gone 2-1 since losing the belt to Jon Jones in March 2011. Since then, he knocked out Forrest Griffin, then lost a close decision to Dan Henderson in a bout that many considered 2011's fight of the year, and now, he knocked out a resurgent Vera.

Rua is still considered to be in the division's top five by most, but he'll have to win at least one more time before he can hope to find himself fighting for gold again. In the meantime, Jones will fight Dan Henderson on Sept. 1, and then the winner of that fight will face Machida.

Asked what might be in his immediate future, Rua offered no specifics, and said he would wait for direction from his bosses.

"I’m happy fighting, I just want to keep fighting," he said. "Let’s see what UFC decides for me for my future. Let’s see."
