UFC boss: Junior Dos Santos-Cain Velasquez II targeted for Dec. 29 card in Vegas (http://mmajunkie.com/news/30149/ufc-boss-junior-dos-santos-cain-velasquez-ii-targeted-for-dec-29-card-in-vegas.mma)by Matt Erickson and John Morgan on Aug 12, 2012 at 3:00 am ET
DENVER – Junior Dos Santos may have a bigger bone to pick with Alistair Overeem than with Cain Velasquez, but that will have to wait.

Dos Santos, the UFC's heavyweight champion, is expected to next defend his title Dec. 29 at the promotion's year-end pay-per-view in Las Vegas. UFC President Dana White late Saturday confirmed the planned matchup following the post-event news conference for UFC 150 in Denver.

While the UFC's traditional year-end show has not yet been announced, the heavyweight title tilt will headline what is likely to be UFC 155 at either the MGM Grand Garden Arena or Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Dos Santos (15-1 MMA, 9-0 UFC) was scheduled to face Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) this past May, but Overeem tested for elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone levels and was essentially suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for nine months. At UFC 146, Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir, while Velasquez (10-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) beat Antonio Silva to become the top contender with Overeem unavailable at least until the end of 2012.

Earlier this month, White said at a recent meeting with Dos Santos, the champ told him he would prefer to face Overeem instead of Velasquez.

"He's the nicest guy in the world," White said of Dos Santos. "But he said, 'I have nothing but respect for Cain Velasquez. I like him as a person and as a fighter, and I think he deserves the shot at the title. But I do not want to fight him,' which is not what he said a month ago. He said, 'Alistair Overeem is a punk. He's got a big mouth, and he's been saying lots of bad things about me, and I want to knock him out. I want to knock him out now.'"

Overeem is out until at least Dec. 27, when he becomes eligible to reapply for a license with the NSAC. But Saturday, White said he doesn't believe there's any shot of Overeem getting licensed to fight on the Dec. 29 show – and that Dos Santos-Velasquez II will go down on the card.

Dos Santos this past November knocked out Velasquez to win the title at UFC on FOX 1.

In July, Overeem told MMAjunkie.com (http://mmajunkie.com/) (www.mmajunkie.com) that Dos Santos was afraid to fight him (http://mmajunkie.com/news/29580/alistair-overeem-ufc-heavyweight-champ-junior-dos-santos-is-afraid-to-fight-me.mma) .

"He can talk all he wants," Overeem said. "I know he's very happy that fight didn't happen, and I know he's afraid to fight me. He also knows that I'm the biggest threat out there to him. He knows when he fights me, there's no escape from it.

"He's going to hit and run, or he's going to go down. Either way, he's going to leave that octagon a loser."

That talked riled up Dos Santos, and White said he was at least considering his champion's request. But the original plan that was hatched after UFC 146 will remain intact. Overeem likely will remain sidelined and be given first crack at the winner.

Chael Sonnen to Meet Forrest Griffin in Light Heavyweight Bout on December 29

Chael Sonnen's next fight will be contested at light heavyweight, and it will be against a familiar foe.

Sonnen, the former middleweight title contender, will meet Forrest Griffin in a 205-pound bout on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas. Sonnen announced the fight on Tuesday's episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV. The card, which is expected to be UFC 155, will take place in Las Vegas and will air on pay-per-view.

Sonnen and Griffin squared off on Sept. 6, 2003, at IFC: Global Domination in Denver before either were UFC stars. Griffin won the fight via triangle-choke submission

Since then, both fighters have gone on to become two of the biggest stars in the UFC, although in different weight classes. Sonnen (27-12-1) is coming off a middleweight title loss to Anderson Silva last month at UFC 148, while Griffin (19-7) defeated Tito Ortiz on the same card.

Below is footage of Sonnen vs. Griffin 1.

Joe Lauzon vs. Gray Maynard Added to UFC 155

The UFC's year-end show named one of its supporting bouts on Monday night, when the promotion announced that a lightweight matchup of Joe Lauzon vs. Gray Maynard will be included in the offering.
The show, which will be UFC 155, takes place on December 29 in Las Vegas.

Lauzon has won three of his last four, most recently defeated Jamie Varner in the third round of their UFC on FOX 4 bout, a matchup that will likely earn some consideration as the best fight of 2012.

After a back-and-forth opening two rounds, Lauzon finally closed out the show with a triangle submission. He's 22-7 overall.

Maynard (11-1-1, 1 no contest) will be fighting for the first time since his June win over Clay Guida, a fight that was notable from the controversy that arose due to Guida's unique strategy. In hopes of avoiding Maynard's power, Guida tried to keep the action limited to short bursts, much to the frustration of the audience. Nevertheless, Maynard won via split-decision.

UFC 155 is expected to feature Junior dos Santos defending the UFC heavyweight championship against Cain Velasquez in a rematch of their 2011 bout. In addition, Chael Sonnen will move up to light-heavyweight to face former champion Forrest Griffin.

Matt Mitrione vs. Phil De Fries Slated for UFC 155

Matt Mitrione will have a chance to end a forgetful year on a high note.

Mitrione has agreed to fight Phil De Fries at UFC 155, which takes place Dec. 29 in Las Vegas. Mitrione confirmed the news with MMAFighting.com Friday morning, while De Fries tweeted it, as well. Fighters Only first reported the news.

Mitrione (5-1) hasn't fought since UFC 137 last October when he lost to Cheick Kongo via unanimous decision. Since then, he's battled injuries until he was ready to return this summer. However, his original opponent Rob Broughton had issues securing a visa and their fight was rescheduled three times. The UFC decided to finally pull the plug on that matchup and book Mitrione vs. De Fries.

De Fries (9-1, 1 NC) most recently submitted fellow Brit Oli Thompson via second-round rear-naked choke at UFC on FOX 4.

No word just yet on whether the fight will air on the main card or undercard.

Chris Weidman vs. Tim Boetsch Added to UFC 155

A bout between top middleweight contenders Chris Weidman and Tim Boetsch has been added to the fight card of UFC 155, promotion officials announced on Friday.
Weidman had long been publicly campaigning for a shot against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, however the match-up ultimately failed to come to fruition, with Silva electing to remain on the sidelines until 2013.

"I think I'm the number-one contender in the division but with Anderson not fighting for the rest of 2012, I want to stay busy and keep getting better," Weidman stated. "I think I'm the best middleweight in the world and I'm going to prove it against another top contender."

UFC 155 takes place December 29, 2012 and is headlined by a heavyweight championship rematch between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez. An additional trio of bouts -- Chael Sonnen vs. Forrest Griffin, Gray Maynard vs. Joe Lauzon, and Matt Mitrione vs. Phil De Fries -- have also been confirmed for the year-end card.

The undefeated Weidman (9-0) recently announced his arrival to the 185-pound division's top ranks at UFC on FUEL 4, where he dominated top contender Mark Munoz for two rounds until brutally knocking him out with a standing elbow and flurry of punches. Prior to the win, Weidman earned a unanimous decision victory over Demian Maia on eleven days notice at UFC on FOX 2.

Boetsch (16-4), meanwhile, rides a string of high-profile upsets into the contest after knocking out Yushin Okami and taking a split decision over former Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard. A former light heavyweight, "The Barbarian" is undefeated since dropping down to 185 pounds, racking up a four straight wins inside the Octagon.

Chris Leben to Return From Year-Long Suspension at UFC 155

The light at the end of the tunnel is finally visible for Chris Leben.
His year-long suspension nearing its conclusion, "The Crippler" has agreed to meet Karlos Vemola at UFC 155, promotion officials announced on Wednesday.

UFC 155 takes place December 29, 2012, one month after the expiration of Leben's suspension. A heavyweight title rematch pitting Junior dos Santos against Cain Velasquez is expected to be the night's main event.

Leben (22-8) last fought in November of 2011, falling to Mark Munoz via second-round TKO in the headlining bout of UFC 138. Following the event, the 32-year-old tested positive for prescription painkillers oxycodone and oxymorphone -- the second failed drug test of Leben's career -- leading UFC President Dana White to hand down the one-year penalty.

"I've battled with (drugs and alcohol) for my entire life," Leben admitted in a candid interview on The MMA Hour midway through his suspension. "I've had an issue with being addicted to painkillers for years now. I had some issues with my camp and it was almost a cry for help. I knew I was going to get caught and I just didn't care at the time. I'm extremely embarrassed. I feel like I let down the UFC, but at the same time I think getting caught is probably the best thing to ever happen to me. The UFC has been unbelievable, they sent me to a rehab facility and they really took care of me."

Prior to his relapse, Leben rolled to four victories in five fights, including impressive finishes of Wanderlei Silva, Yoshihiro Akiyama and Aaron Simpson.

Now he'll meet Vemola (9-3), a former light heavyweight sporting a 1-1 UFC record since dropping down to 185 pounds. The Czech wrestling champion defeated Mike Massenzio via second-round rear-naked choke at UFC on FOX 3, before losing to Francis Carmont in the exact same fashion two months later.

Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami Rematch Targeted for UFC 155

A middleweight bout pitting top contender Alan Belcher against Yushin Okami has been agreed to for UFC 155, sources close to the event told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani.
Belcher and Okami are set to face off six years after their initial meeting, when Okami emerged victorious via unanimous decision in the promotional debuts of both men on the undercard of UFC 62.

UFC 155 takes place December 29, 2012. The year-end card is headlined by a heavyweight championship rematch, Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez, and already features a slew of familiar names -- Chael Sonnen vs. Forrest Griffin, Chris Weidman vs. Tim Boetsch, Gray Maynard vs. Joe Lauzon, and the returns of Matt Mitrione and Chris Leben.

Belcher (18-6) hopes to finally capitalize on the momentum gained from his first-round TKO win over Rousimar Palhares at UFC on FOX 3, which pushed the American's winning streak to four straight.

"The Talent" was then booked to fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 153, however Belfort's withdrawal in the wake of UFC 151's cancellation led to Belcher's removal from the card. Surprisingly, the 28-year-old called the shift a "blessing in disguise," revealing that his status was already in question due to a fractured spine.

Okami (27-7), meanwhile, looks to build on his recent TKO victory over Buddy Roberts at UFC 150. Prior to the win, Okami suffered the first losing streak of his career, falling at the hands of Anderson Silva in mid-2011 before crumbling in stunning fashion to Tim Boetsch at UFC 144.

Phil Davis replaces Chael Sonnen, will fight Forrest Griffin

Phil Davis will face former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin at UFC 155 on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas, the UFC announced Friday.

Griffin was originally scheduled to face Chael Sonnen at the year-end event, but Sonnen was tapped to become a coach on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter against Jon Jones.

Davis recently defeated Wagner Prado via an anaconda choke submission in the second round at UFC 153 on Oct. 13. Davis is 4-1 (with one no-contest) in his last six fights.

Griffin hasn't fought since defeating Tito Ortiz via unanimous decision at UFC 148 on July 7, 2012. He is 3-3 in his past six fights.

The fight is slated to be on the main card of the event. A heavyweight clash between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez is expected to be the main event.

Erik Koch vs. Ricardo Lamas, Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland added to UFC 155

Faced with criticism that its events are watered down, the UFC continues piling on to an already stacked event at UFC 155, announcing the additions of two bouts with top ranked featherweights and bantamweights to the year-end show.

Erik Koch was at one time set to take on Jose Aldo for the 145-pound belt. Instead, an injury scrapped the match, and now it appears that he will have to win at least one more time to capture another chance at gold. Instead of facing Aldo, he'll put his four-fight win streak on the line against Ricardo Lamas.

The 24-year-old Koch (13-1) hasn't fought since last September's defeat of Jonathan Brookins. He'll attempt to regain his momentum against Lamas, who has won six of his last seven.

The surging Lamas (12-2) is coming off a pair of significant victories, with an arm triangle submission win over Cub Swanson and a decision win over Hatsu Hioki.

The winner could step into the No. 1 contender slot, though the UFC has not confirmed that.

Meanwhile, the bantamweight division will see Brad Pickett and Eddie Wineland meet up on the same night.

Pickett (22-6) comes off back-to-back finishes of Damacio Page and Yves Jabouin while Wineland (19-8-1) scored a knockout of Scott Jorgensen in his last bout.

The Dec. 29 card continues to take shape but already boasts a UFC heavyweight championship main event between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez, a middleweight contenders bout pitting rising star Chris Weidman against Tim Boetsch, Phil Davis against Forrest Griffin, Gray Maynard vs. Joe Lauzon and Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami.

The event will take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Michael Johnson vs. Myles Jury official for December's UFC 155 event

A lightweight matchup between Michael Johnson (12-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Myles Jury (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is now official for December's UFC 155 event.

UFC officials recently confirmed the booking, which was originally reported in October.

UFC 155 takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main event is a heavyweight title fight rematch between champion Junior Dos Santos and ex-titleholder Cain Velasquez, which headlines the pay-per-view portion of the show.

Johnson vs. Jury is expected be part of the evening's preliminary card, which FX and Facebook carry.

Johnson is coming off a come-from-behind win over Danny Castillo at October's UFC on FX event 5 in Minneapolis. Despite Castillo dropping him in the first round, Johnson rallied in the second for a knockout victory. The KO earned him a $40,000 "Knockout of the Night" bonus, his first in the UFC.

Johnson has won three straight fights since a 1-2 start to his career. "The Ultimate Fighter 12 " runner-up beat Shane Roller by unanimous decision at UFC on FOX 2 in January and then outpointed "TUF 13" winner Tony Ferguson at UFC on FOX 3 in May.

Jury got his UFC start on "TUF 13," but an injury took him off the show after one episode. He returned this past spring, though, for "TUF 15." And though his opening-round fight resulted in a loss to eventual runner-up Al Iaquinta, Jury got a shot at the TUF Live Finale in June. And he took advantage.

Jury stopped fellow Californian and "TUF" housemate Chris Saunders with a first-round guillotine choke. The win kept him unbeaten as a pro through 10 fights – all by first-round stoppage. At four minutes and three seconds long, it was by far the longest fight of Jury's career, which includes seven wins in less than 90 seconds, many coming in KOTC.

With the official confirmation, the UFC 155 lineup now includes:
Champ Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez - for heavyweight title
Phil Davis vs. Forrest Griffin
Tim Boetsch vs. Chris Weidman
Joe Lauzon vs. Gray Maynard
Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami
Chris Leben vs. Karlos Vemola
Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland
Erik Koch vs. Ricardo Lamas
Phil De Fries vs. Matt Mitrione
Michael Johnson vs. Myles Jury
Byron Bloodworth vs. Erik Perez

Leonard Garcia vs. Cody McKenzie added to December's UFC 155 event

A featherweight matchup between fan-favorite slugger Leonard Garcia (15-9-1 MMA, 2-5 UFC) and "The Ultimate Fighter 12" cast member Cody McKenzie (13-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) will take place in December.

UFC officials today announced the contest has been booked for UFC 155.

UFC 155 takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main event is a heavyweight title fight rematch between champion Junior Dos Santos and ex-titleholder Cain Velasquez, which headlines the pay-per-view portion of the show.

UFC officials did not announce where the Garcia vs. McKenzie bout will reside on the evening's fight card, but it is expected to take place on the preliminary portion of the event.

Garcia comes into the bout in desperate need of a win after dropping three-straight fights under the UFC banner. The Team Jackson-Winkeljohn fighter has competed under the Zuffa banner since 2007 and has a penchant for exciting (even if not exactly technical) brawls from start to finish. In fact, four of Garcia's past seven fights have earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus, and his 2010 tussle with Chan Sung Jung in the now-shuttered WEC promotion is widely considered that year's best fight.

Still, Garcia has just one win in his past five fights and could use a victory to stay in his bosses' good graces.

Meanwhile, McKenzie fights for the second time at 145 pounds after a three-fight UFC run at lightweight. His first trip to featherweight was not a success, as the submission ace suffered a knockout loss to Chad Mendes in just 31 seconds. While McKenzie is also no stranger to entertaining tussles, his 12 career submission wins are a clear indicator of where he'll likely hope to take this matchup.

With the latest addition to the card, the UFC 155 lineup now includes:

Champ Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez - for heavyweight title
Phil Davis vs. Forrest Griffin
Tim Boetsch vs. Chris Weidman
Joe Lauzon vs. Gray Maynard
Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami
Chris Leben vs. Karlos Vemola
Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland
Phil De Fries vs. Matt Mitrione
Michael Johnson vs. Myles Jury
Leonard Garcia vs. Cody McKenzie
Byron Bloodworth vs. Erik Perez

Jim Miller steps in for injured Gray Maynard against Joe Lauzon

Wednesday, Gray Maynard became the latest UFC fighter to drop out of an upcoming fight due to an injury.

But in this case, the UFC was quick to find a suitable replacement for his UFC 155 bout against Joe Lauzon, as Jim Miller will take Maynard's place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 29.

The UFC announced the moves on Wednesday.

The injury suffered by Maynard (11-1-1), who was looking for his second straight win after defeating Clay Guida in June, was undisclosed.

Lauzon (22-7), who holds the UFC record for post-fight bonuses with 11, has won three of his past four fights. His most recent bout, a submission win over Jamie Varner at UFC on FOX 4, is on the short list of this year's Fight of the Year candidates.

Miller (22-4), meanwhile, has a golden opportunity to rebound. The well-respected veteran from New Jersey has dropped two of his past three fights, most recently his submission loss to Nate Diaz at UFC on FOX 3 in May.

Shoulder injury forces Chris Weidman out of UFC 155; Teammate Costa Philippou agrees to fight Tim Boetsch

"When it rains, it pours, I guess."

That's how a distraught Chris Weidman tried to make sense of the right shoulder injury that has forced him out of his UFC 155 fight against Tim Boetsch. Newsday.com first reported the news on Thursday. As a result, Weidman's teammate Costa Philippou, who was scheduled to fight Nick Ring this weekend at UFC 154 until Ring wasn't cleared to fight Saturday morning, will replace Weidman in the bout.

According to Weidman, he injured his shoulder while training at Power MMA in Arizona recently.

"My shoulder popped," he said. "I never felt anything like it before. Now I can hardly move my arm."

Weidman said he is awaiting a final diagnosis from his doctor, but the initial report is showing a torn labrum, with a possible shoulder dislocation or separation.

He has been told that following surgery, which will most likely be needed, he'll be forced to sit on the sidelines for at least three-to-six months, however, he said he has yet to talk to his doctor about the recovery process.

The injury comes just weeks after Weidman's Long Island, N.Y., home was ruined by Hurricane Sandy. Since then, Weidman and his family were forced to move in with his parents, and he traveled to Arizona last week to focus on training for Boetsch.

"My biggest fear was something happening to me before this fight," Weidman said. "I wanted this fight so bad, what with the hurricane and our house, and on top of that, it's the biggest fight of my career.

"Everything happens for a reason. Hopefully, this will be blessing."

UFC 155, headlined by Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez 2, will take place Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

Todd Duffee agrees to meet Phil De Fries at UFC 155 in Octagon return

He's baaaaack.

More than two years after he was unceremoniously released from the UFC, Todd Duffee has signed a new deal with the promotion and will fight Phil De Fries at UFC 155 next month in Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Sun first reported the news Wednesday, and it was later confirmed by the UFC.

The 26-year-old Duffee was released in Sept. 2010, almost four months after he was knocked out by Mike Russow at UFC 114. Duffee knocked out Tim Hague in just seven seconds in his Octagon debut at UFC 102 in Aug. 2009.

UFC president Dana White told MMAFighting.com at UFC 119 that the UFC released the heavyweight because of his bad attitude.

"The biggest problem that I have with Todd Duffee is his attitude," White said. "You guys don't see, you don't know. I deal with tons of guys. We have hundreds of guys under contract. I've had thousands of guys under contract over the last ten years, and Todd Duffee, to me, doesn't seem like he wants to be in the UFC. He doesn't like being in the UFC. Let him go fight in the smaller organizations and work his way back up, if he even wants to work his way back up to the UFC.

"He's got a horrible attitude. He can still go back and train and fight in these smaller leagues and work on his skills and attitude."

Apparently, Duffee has done just that.

Since his release, Duffee went 1-1 outside of the UFC. Alistair Overeem knocked him out in 19 seconds at Dynamite!! 2010, and he needed just 34 seconds to TKO Neil Grove at Super Fight League 2 in April.

A slot opened up for the 26-year-old after Matt Mitrione, who was originally scheduled to fight De Fries at UFC 155, agreed to replace Shane Carwin against Roy Nelson at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale next month. De Fries (9-1, 1 NC) is 2-1 inside the Octagon, most recently submitted Oli Thompson at UFC on FOX 4.

UFC 155, headlined by Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez 2, will take place Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

John Moraga vs. Chris Cariaso slotted for UFC 155 in Las Vegas

A flyweight bout between John Moraga (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Chris Cariaso (14-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is the latest addition to next month's UFC 155 event.

It's the 12th fight for the year-end fight card.

UFC 155 takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with a championship headliner between heavyweight titleholder Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez.

The main airs live on pay-per-view, and FX and Facebook are expected to carry the prelims. Moraga vs. Cariaso likely will be part of the prelims.

Moraga looks for his sixth straight win following a UFC-debut knockout win over Ulysses Gomez at UFC on FOX 4 back in August. The Arizona-based ex-collegiate wrestler how has seven stoppages in 11 career victories.

Cariaso, meanwhile, quietly looks for his fourth straight UFC win. Following a UFC loss to top contender Michael McDonald, the WEC vet picked up decision wins over bantamweights Vaughan Lee and Takeya Mizugaki. Then, back in July at UFC on FUEL TV 4, he made the drop to flyweight and picked up a decision win over Josh Ferguson.

The latest UFC 155 card now includes:
Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez - for heavyweight title
Phil Davis vs. Forrest Griffin
Tim Boetsch vs. Constantinos Philippou
Joe Lauzon vs. Jim Miller
Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami
Chris Leben vs. Karlos Vemola
Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland
Phil De Fries vs. Todd Duffee

Injury forces Forrest Griffin out of UFC 155 bout with Phil Davis

A knee injury has forced Forrest Griffin (19-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) out of this month's UFC 155 co-headliner with light-heavyweight contender Phil Davis (10-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC).

UFC President Dana White today announced the news. He made no mention of a possible replacement.

UFC 155 takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Griffin and Davis were part of the pay-per-view main card, which follows prelims on FX and Facebook.

"Forrest Has MCL tear and ACL strain," White tweeted. "20 cc's of blood removed from his knee and the saga continues at the UFC!!"

Griffin originally was scheduled to fight Chael Sonnen on the card. However, Sonnen ultimately was pulled from the fight so he could begin a coaching stint opposite Jon Jones on "The Ultimate Fighter 17."

Griffin beat Tito Ortiz by unanimous decision back in July at UFC 148. Prior to that, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua stopped him at UFC 134 in August 2011. But the win over Ortiz gave him three wins in his past four fights.

Davis got back in the win column against Wagner Prado back in October at UFC 153. It was his first victory since a March 2011 win over Nogueira. In the main event of UFC on FOX 2, Davis dropped a unanimous decision to Rashad Evans. He followed that up in August against Prado at UFC on FOX 4, but an accidental eye poke left Prado unable to continue, and the bout was declared a no-contest.

Derek Brunson vs. Chris Leben now official for UFC 155 in Las Vegas

A middleweight fight between Strikeforce crossover Derek Brunson (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and UFC veteran Chris Leben (22-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) now is official for next week's UFC 155 pay-per-view.

Brunson steps in for an injured Karlos Vemola (9-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) for the short notice fight, news that was first reported by USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie. UFC officials on Wednesday made the fight official.

Brunson-Leben is expected to serve as the opening bout of the pay-per-view's main card. UFC 155 takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The year-end show is headlined by a heavyweight title fight rematch between champion Junior Dos Santos and former champ Cain Velasquez.

Brunson comes to the UFC following back-to-back losses. In August, he was knocked out by former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in just 41 seconds. In June, he lost a controversial split decision to Kendall Grove under the Missouri-based ShoFight banner in a fight outside Strikeforce.

Prior to the consecutive losses, Brunson started his career 9-0 with seven first-round stoppage wins. The North Carolina native went 3-1 with Strikeforce and now will look to start off his UFC career on a high note. His Strikeforce future, along with that promotion's other fighters, remains clouded in doubt with the Jan. 12 event expected to be its last.

Leben makes his return after a yearlong suspension after testing positive for prescription painkillers following his UFC 138 main-event loss to Mark Munoz in England. That was Leben's second career suspension for a failed drug test.

Before that loss, Leben notched a quick knockout win over Wanderlei Silva in just 27 seconds at UFC 132. But he's toggled back and forth with sins and losses after a three-fight win streak that included stoppages of Aaron Simpson and Yoshihiro Akiyama just two weeks apart in 2010.

Two other late changes are expected for next week's card, with the likely addition of a lightweight fight between Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner. That fight was to take place at this past weekend's TUF 16 Finale, but Varner was ill on the day of the fight and not allowed to compete. UFC President Dana White said the fight will be moved to UFC 155, but it has not yet been formally announced. And the promotion is looking for an opponent for featherweight Leonard Garcia, who had Cody McKenzie fall off their bout with an injury just Tuesday.

With the change, the UFC 155 card now includes:

MAIN (Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET)

Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez - for heavyweight title
Joe Lauzon vs. Jim Miller
Tim Boetsch vs. Constantinos Philippou

Max Holloway agrees to replace Cody McKenzie against Leonard Garcia at UFC 155

he MMA injury bug rolls on unabated and this time claims a preliminary card bout for the final UFC show of 2012. UFC lightweight Cody McKenzie is out of his bout with Leonard Garcia at UFC 155. Max Holloway has agreed to replace McKenzie for the contest, the UFC announced on their website.
"With Cody McKenzie injured, Leonard Garcia gets a new opponent in Max Holloway," the statement read. "Verbal agreements are in for that bout as well." The nature of McKenzie's injury was not directly specified.

Holloway, 21, most recently fought at UFC 150 in August of this year, besting Justin Lawrence by TKO in the second round. He is 2-1 in the UFC and 6-1 in professional MMA.

Garcia, 33, is on a three-fight losing skid. He's dropped three consecutive fights to Chan Sung Jung, Nam Phan and most recently Matt Grice at UFC on FX 3 in June of 2012. He is 6-8-1 in UFC competition and 15-9-1 in professional MMA overall.

UFC 155 takes place on December 29th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., and is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Junior dos Santos and challenger Cain Velasquez.

Guillard vs. Varner officially joins UFC 155's FX prelims; bout order finalized

A recently canceled bout between lightweights Jamie Varner (20-7-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Melvin Guillard (30-11-2 MMA, 11-7 UFC) is now official for next week's UFC 155 event, and it's part of the four-fight FX-televised preliminary card.

UFC officials recently set the bout order, which also includes three prelims on Facebook.

UFC 155 takes place Dec. 29 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card, including a heavyweight title between champion Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez, airs on pay-per-view.

Guillard and Varner initially were slated to fight this past weekend at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. However, just prior to the Dec. 15 main-card bout, officials nixed it because Varner had fell ill and was vomiting backstage. The cancellation came mere hours after Guillard said Varner had accused him of greasing up prior to the fight.

Guillard initially said he had no intention of keeping the fight with Varner, but when UFC President Dana White said he planned to rebook it for the following week, he relented.

The fight-night dramatics created plenty of bad blood between the veteran lightweights, but the beef now will be settled next week on FX.

Varner looks for a return to the win column following an August "Fight of the Night" loss to Joe Lauzon at UFC on FOX 4. That defeat came after his major upset win over Edson Barboza – a first-round TKO win at UFC 146 on short notice – in May. Guillard, too, looks to get back on the right side of things after an August "Fight of the Night" knockout loss to former teammate Donald Cerrone at UFC 150. That defeat gave Guillard three first-round losses in his past four fights.

The official UFC 155 card now includes:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET)
Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez - for heavyweight title
Joe Lauzon vs. Jim Miller
Tim Boetsch vs. Constantinos Philippou
Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami

Melvin Guillard vs. Jamie Varner
