Miesha Tate Guts Out Win Over Game Julie Kedzie

In her first fight since losing the Strikeforce bantamweight title, Miesha Tate found her way back into the win column, but it wasn't without some pain and drama.

Tate overcame a rough first round and a third-round knockdown by Julie Kedzie, showing her grit in turning the tide and eventually forcing a third-round tapout. The armbar submission came at 3:28 of the final round of their Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman prelim.

Kedzie, a respected veteran, came in like gangbusters, producing her best performance in years, scoring early and often with her striking. Tate tried multiple takedowns in the first round, but Kedzie always seemed one step ahead, and was able to sprawl and defend.

Tate rebounded well between rounds and used her wrestling and ground game to re-establish control in the second, taking Kedzie's back and looking for a rear naked choke and guillotine at various times. While she was unable to secure either one, the effort likely evened the scoring at one round apiece heading into the third.

Kedzie's leg kicks seemed to affect Tate's mobility, and just as the former champion switched stances, Kedzie head kicked her, knocking Tate down. Tate withstood the flurry and threatened with an armbar from the bottom. Kedzie defended at first, but Tate kept working the hold and eventually locked it out, forcing Kedzie to tap.

"I worked a lot of my ground game," Tate said. "It felt good when I got that arm bar and i wasn't going to give it up for anything."

According to statistics shown by Showtime, Kedzie had out-struck Tate 71-24 before the fight-ending finish.

Tate improved to 13-3 with the win while Kedzie fell to 16-11.

Ovince St. Preux Knocks Out T.J. Cook

After two rounds of grinding action, Ovince St. Preux found swift resolution to his Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman fight.

St. Preux knocked T.J. Cook out with his first punch of the third round, a crushing left cross that sent Cook crashing to his back unconscious. The time of the stoppage was :20.

Cook certainly fought competitively up until that point.

St. Preux nearly finished Cook in the first, dropping him with a left hand across the top of the head. He pounded Cook on the ground and ref Mike Beltran took a long look, considering a stoppage at several points. But Cook defended, got back to his feet and then unleashed a swarm of his own, with a big right hook hurting St. Preux. The wild series tired out both men, and St. Preux was able to secure a takedown and score with punches for most of the rest of the frame.

The second got off to a slow start, with both men looking for a bit of a breather early on. St. Preux scored a takedown with two minutes left and scored the most significant strikes of the fight with stinging left hands from full mount. That forced Cook to give up his back, and while St. Preux didn't have enough time to lock in the choke, the flurry likely gave him the round.

"In the first round I kind of exhausted myself trying to finish him," he said. "In the second I was trying to put the pressure on, but in the third, I felt real good."

For St. Preux, it was his first win since losing to Gegard Mousasi last December. He improved to 12-5.

It was the second straight loss for Cook, who is now 12-5.

Anthony Smith Submits Lumumba Sayers

Saturday night was part-business and part-personal for Anthony Smith, and the evening ended as he hoped, in victory.
Smith bloodied Lumumba Sayers up and then locked in a fight-ending triangle, causing a stoppage due to tapout at 3:52 of the first round of their Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman fight.

Smith showed a slick ground game several times during the brief fight, reversing disadvantageous positions with potential submission holds. He later bloodied Sayers with an elbow.

The end came when Smith slipped upon throwing a strike. He couldn't regain his footing and instead fell backwards.

Sayers tried to capitalize on the position by moving into his guard, but Smith quickly worked from his back to gain wrist control, and soon wrapped up Sayers in a triangle.

"That's my trademark," he said after winning.

It was the third straight win for Smith, who improved to 17-8. Sayers fell to 6-3, snapping a two-fight win streak.

The duo had shared some back-and-forth prior to the bout based upon their previous personal experiences, but it was Smith who walked out with bragging rights.

Tarec Saffiedine Tops Roger Bowling, Wants Nate Marquardt Next

If Strikeforce's welterweight division is ready for a top contender, Tarec Saffiedine has officially put up his hand to volunteer.

At Saturday night's Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman, Saffiedine earned his third straight win with a unanimous decision over Roger Bowling, and then he said he was prepared to challenge new champion Nate Marquardt.

"Yes, sir," he said when asked if he was ready. "Who is with me for the title?"

Saffiedine won the fight by scores of 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, though the fight was closer than that.

Bowling initiated the early action, hunting early body shots as Saffiedine took a more stationary position. As the first round went on, Saffiedine looked to gain a comfort level from there while Bowling began looking for the takedown. Despite numerous attempts, Bowling couldn't get it to the mat.

As the second round began, Saffiedine's technical striking seemed to land the crisper shots, but Bowling stayed aggressive with his volume and power, making it a difficult one to judge. Bowling's wrestling though, was completely negated, as Saffiedine stopped him at every turn.

Bowling seemed to tire in the third, and Saffadiene's punches landed in the early going. Bowling tried his last takedown of the fight with about 1:20 left, and the decision proved costly. Saffiedine sprawled and ended up taking Bowling's back, and ended the fight with a rear naked choke applied, putting an exclamation point on the victory.

With the win, Saffiedine improved his record to 13-3.

Bowling saw a personal two-fight win streak snapped, and he's now 11-3.

Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza Knocks Out Derek Brunson

The submission master would like the world to know he also has dangerous hands.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, long considered one of the most decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylists in mixed martial arts, scored his first career knockout at SAturday night's Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman. Jacare dropped Brunson with a right hook, then floored him again a moment later with another right and landed a few ground strikes before referee Mike Beltran stepped in to stop it.

It was his first ever, and it came in his 20th pro fight.

"All my training partners talk about my hands," he said afterward. "I come prepared. I do my best. I train with the best gym in the world."

Prior to Saturday night, 15 of his wins had come by way of submission.

With the win, he could possibly become the next man to challenge current 185-pound champion Luke Rockhold.

"I'm very prepared for everyone, anytime," he said. "I'm here for a fight. I'm Strikeforce former middleweight champion, and I'm coming back for more."

Souza is now 16-3 with 1 no contest.

It was the second straight loss for Brunson, though it marks the first time he's ever been finished. He fell to 9-2.

The time of the knockout was 41 seconds of the first round.

Ronda Rousey Wins by Armbar, Challenges Cris Cyborg

"Rousey by armbar."
The three words are quickly becoming a significant entry in the MMA lexicon. The move itself has become so dominant that it's more about when than about if it is coming.

After Saturday night's Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman main event, it's six fights, six first-round armbar submissions by the bantamweight champion, who pulled off the trick in just 54 seconds this time.

Ronda Rousey's latest victim was Sarah Kaufman, a former champion who had been beaten just once in 16 career fights.

Rousey scored a takedown inside of the first 20 seconds and immediately attacked with the armbar. Kaufman defended the initial surge, but Rousey had latched on and wasn't going to let go until she had it. The two played tug of war for what must have seemed like an eternity for Kaufman, but in reality landed just around 20 seconds. And finally, Rousey won, locking out her hips and hyperextending Kaufman's elbow, and the challenger was forced to tap.

"Ronda put on a great performance," Kaufman (15-2) said afterward. "I'm embarrassed by my performance. I don't really know what else to say. Ronda did a great job. She got the armbar, I defended it. She continued with it, I defended it, and she ended up getting it so I'm really disappointed. I really wanted to land some good quality strikes but it didn't happen tonight."

Rousey wasted no time in setting up her next match. Without skipping a beat, she sidestepped interviewer Mauro Ranallo's first post-fight interview question and took matters into her own hands.

"I need to send out a challenge to Miss Cyborg out there," she said. "People want to see the first fair fight of your life. I'm the champ now. The champ doesn't go to you, you go to the champ. Come down to 135 and let's settle this."
Cyborg was reportedly in attendance at Valley View Casino Center.

Rousey will have to wait for Cris Cyborg to come off a steroid suspension later this year for that fight to be set up, but it seems like a no-brainer as long as the former featherweight champion can make the bantamweight limit. She has previously said that she cannot, and that she would have to fight Rousey at 145 or a catchweight of 140.

But that talk is for another time. For now, it is fair to marvel at Rousey's incredible streak of finishes. Six fights, six wins, six first-round armbars.

Top Germaine! Gefeliciteerd!!!!!

SAN DIEGO – Long story short, Hiroko Yamanaka couldn't get the takedown, and Germaine de Randamie made her pay.

In the first of three women's bouts on the card, de Randamie outstruck her Japanese counterpart and posted a shutout unanimous-decision victory.

The featherweight fight was part of the preliminary card of Saturday's "Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman" event at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. It aired on Showtime Extreme prior to the Showtime-televised main card.

The bout saw numerous lulls in action, often when the fighters stalemated in the clinch while against the cage. However, when Yamanaka struggled for takedowns, de Randamie landed some solid punches, including a right hand that become increasingly effective through the first two rounds of the bout.

Yamanaka stood strong and fought back throughout the bout, but she couldn't find an answer for de Randamie's crisp striking and takedown defense. Yamanaka threw caution to the wind and landed a few power punches, but her muay Thai specialist opponent closed out the fight with effective combos and a stiff front kick to the face.

Not surprisingly, the judges awarded de Randamie the unanimous-decision victory via 30-27 scores.

With the win, de Randamie (3-2 MMA, 2-1 SF), who hadn't fought in 14 months, successfully rebounds from a decision loss to Julie Budd in 2011. Yamanaka (12-2 MMA, 0-1 SF), competing for the first time since a December no-contest with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (who failed a post-fight drug test), registers her first official loss in 10 fights.

Up-to-the-minute "Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman" results include: •Germaine de Randamie def. Hiroko Yamanaka via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Ronda Rousey makes a Death Threat towards Kaufman

During the pre-fight press conference for Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman, Ronda Rousey let loose a “death threat” tirade. “Kaufman might not know it, but she should be thanking her lucky stars that MMA is properly regulated in California. If I get her in an armbar, I’m going to try to rip it off and throw it at her corner. If I get her in a choke, I’m going to hold on to it until she’s actually dead. And if I get a knockout, along the way I’m going to try to pound her face into the ground and she’s depending on the competence of the California State Athletic Commission to walk out of that cage alive.”
