What started as a breakfast conversation with a business buddy for Ray Sefo, has turned into a full-blown MMA promotion backed by NBC Sports Network.

Sefo, the former K-1 kickboxer, joked about how a casual conversation more than a year ago led to the World Series of Fighting — MMA’s newest organization, which was announced Thursday during a media gathering at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

"It was a Friday night and I was interviewing with TapouT radio. One of the questions we talked about was an issue within K-1, and I said if I had the right people and the right funding I could do that and take it over," said Sefo, the WSOF president."The very next day my phone rings at 8 o’clock in the morning, a good friend calls (me to talk).

"Long story short, we had breakfast (and talked about ideas for new fighting promotion). The crazy thing is that everything he had in mind, I had in mind. That was the birth of what we have here today."

What the WSOF has now is a handful of former UFC fighters who will compete on its very first card, a Nov. 3 date featuring former World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight champ Miguel Torres headlining against a yet-to-be-named opponent.

The event — like all of the shows that will take place in 2012 will air live on NBC Sports Network from Planet Hollywood — features Gregor Gracie (7-2) taking on Tyson Steel (8-1), along with Ronys Torres (25-4) vs. Brian Cobb (19-7), Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante (16-6) taking on John Gunderson (34-14) and Josh Burkman also fighting on the card. Other notable signings of WSOF include former pro wrestler Bobby Lashley and Ultimate Fighter alum James McSweeney.

"For me it’s a new future, it’s a bright future. Being on NBC Sports is a huge thing for me, and a big deal for all of us," said Torres, who was recently released by the UFC after suffering a first-round knockout loss to Michael McDonald at UFC 145. "I look forward to coming out on November 3 and putting on the best fight, the best main event I can for you guys."

Much like the many opportunities that Torres had to sign with varying MMA promotions, Burkman also felt the WSOF was the right place to call home over other promotions.

"I just came off a fight a week and half ago against Jamie Yager and I won that fight. I was just kind of sitting back and waiting for the right opportunity, waiting for the right phone call," Burkman said.

"Since I came out here and talked to everyone involved and being on NBC and with Planet Hollywood, I know I’m in the right place. We’re gonna make some noise in the MMA community. Ray wants to give the fans the right show and he’s treating the fighters great."

Indeed, if anyone knows how to relate to fighters, it’s the 41-year-old Sefo.

In addition to his decorated kickboxing career, the New Zealander continues to coach fighters in and around Las Vegas, a position he plans to continue holding despite his new responsibilities as WSOF president.

"I love challenges," Sefo said. "Being the president of a company is a huge responsibility and being a coach is a huge responsibility. I feel right now I can wear both hats. As long as I can do that, I’m good with it."

Much like the UFC, WSOF will utilize rules regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, with possible minor changes being introduced prior to or after the inaugural event. However, one major difference from the UFC will be the WSOF’s use of a 10-sided cage compared to the UFC’s octagon.

Sefo says the promotion hopes to put on eight to 10 shows during its first year, which is also the length of the promotion’s contract with NBC — obviously the biggest partner of the WSOF, which also includes MMAWC (a Nevada-based company with longtime combat advocate and marketing guru Sig Rogich leading the way) and Caesars Entertainment.

While plenty of MMA promotions have come and gone in recent years, Sefo believes the fighters, fans, and backing of NBC Sports makes WSOF different.

"Just like anything you got to start from the bottom up," he said. "We believe there’s a lot of talent out there that is not contracted out in the UFC. I understand the goal for every fight out there to get to the UFC, or most fighters I should say. And so they should, as it’s the beast of the MMA world right now.

"But we’re not focusing on that, we’re focusing on what we bring to the table — which is creating more opportunities for fighters."

World Series of Fighting expects sellout in debut show

The card is set, the cage is designed and the marketing for the World Series of Fighting debut is ongoing. Now, the promotion just needs the fans to show up.

According to WSOF president Ray Sefo, they will.

Tickets for the event are moving quickly, he said on a Wednesday conference call, and by the time the event kicks off on the night of Nov. 3, he expects a sellout.

"The tickets are going great at the moment thanks to the hard work of our team and our partners, so we're very pleased with the way things are moving right now," he said.

The host venue, PH Live at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, is configured to hold about 7,000 fans, and WSOF spokesman Jim Hunter said that number is about what the promotion will be expecting.
If they're right, that would be considered a very strong number for a non-UFC show.

At least in the major MMA world, WSOF will get the night to itself as a previously scheduled Strikeforce card has been canceled. That has left the promotion with hope and excitement that a show that features familiar names like Andrei Arlovski, Anthony Johnson and Miguel Torres will draw.

"This has taken us almost two years to put together," Sefo said. "Just like anything, when you start something, obviously you want to start slow. We've overcome some bumps along the way and I think those bumps have become a blessing in disguise. We were able to sit back and reflect on what needed to change and so on. When things started falling in to place, I think the stars were aligned for us to have the guys we have. The team and myself feel very blessed to have the card that we have because at the end of the day, nothing is possible without these guys."

Tyrone Spong, Anthony Johnson look for Blackzilian synergy at WSOF

Tyrone Spong says he feels no pressure leading into his debut mixed martial arts bout at Saturday night's World Series of Fighting card in Las Vegas.

And really, what reason do we have not to believe him? The 27-year old Spong has fought in high-level kickboxing bouts the world over, so it's not like he's some fresh-faced kid who has never competed in front of a crowd.

"There's no pressure," said Spong, who meets light heavyweight Travis Bartlett on the NBC Sports Network-broadcast main card at Planet Hollywood. "I'm doing this first of all for myself. I'd like to put on a great fight for the fans and all the people who stand behind me. I don't feel any pressure at all."

It helps quite a bit, of course, if you've got a teammate in the same weight class fighting on the same card. Spong's Blackzilians campmate, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, meets D.J. Linderman in the evening's co-main event. With Spong and Johnson boasting distinct strengths and weaknesses, both say they've been able to help push each other and become more well-rounded fighters leading into Saturday night's event.

For Johnson, having Spong around has helped refine his striking game.

"Just working with Tyrone is an honor," Johnson said. "His style of of just being aggressive, putting pressure, the combination of the kicks and the punches, so much power and speed behind everything, it's been a great help to me, it makes me want to fight that way. Just working with him period, one on one, he helped elevate my level of striking."

It's no secret which aspect of Spong's game needs the most work. But having a former national junior college wrestling champion to work with in Johnson is helping to bring him up to speed.

"I've done a lot of training with Anthony, he's well experienced," Spong said. "He's been doing MMA a long time, [has a] wrestling background and everything. Of course everyone knows I need to work on my ground game. So, for him to work with me and find out the things I have focus on and work on, I benefit a lot about it, that's it."

Which leads to an obvious question: Just how much will Spong be tested if the fight hits the ground? For his part, Bartlett, a fighter out of Bangor, ME who has a 7-2 record but hasn't fought since 2010, says he's not afraid to go into Spong's wheelhouse.

"I have no secrets, I fight one way," says Bartlett. "If he stays outside and plays a leg kick game and dances around, if he goes that route, I'll try to take him down, but if he wants to stand and bang, I think it's a fight sport first, not a sport fight first, if he wants to stay in the middle of the ring, I'm game. ... I'm a man of my word, if I have to, if he's keeping his distance the way he wants and playing that game, then I'm going to have to pressure him and go for the shots and do all that. But if he wants to go mano y mano in the middle of the cage, I'll welcome it."

Of course, you can't mention Johnson without discussing his legendary struggles with pre-fight weight cutting. Now that he's fighting at light heavyweight instead attempting to reach welterweight or middleweight, Johnson has settled into a groove, winning three straight fights at 205 since being cut from the UFC early this year.

"I just feel good, I'm just happy I don't have to lose all the weight that I was losing. I'm good. I'm more happy than I've ever been, and uh, I feel more complete as a human being and as a fighter. As long as I'm smiling when I'm cutting weight, everything's good."
