UFC on FX 5 bonuses: Edwards, Johnson, Nunes and Palaszewski pocket $40,000

Undercard participants Michael Johnson, Diego Nunes, and Bart Palaszewski, and main card fighter Justin Edwards each earned $40,000 in post-fight bonuses for their work at UFC on FX 5. UFC officials announced the bonuses following the event.

After surviving two near finishes in round one, Johnson stormed back in the second frame to drop Danny Castillo with a short left hook and seize ‘Knockout of the Night' honors, marking the first post-fight bonus of his UFC career.

"He caught me in the first round," Johnson said afterward. "Hats off to him. I just had to stay composed. He wasted all his energy. My hands got the best of him and that's a wrap."

‘Fight of Night' went to Nunes and Palaszewski for a knock-down, drag-out 15-minute affair on the FUEL TV preliminary card. Nunes ultimately emerged the winner on the judges' scorecards (30-27, 29-28, 30-27) to earn his third UFC victory.

Lastly, Edwards claimed ‘Submission of the Night' honors by upsetting Josh Neer with a quick first-round guillotine choke. The finish arrived with Neer asleep on the mat just 45 seconds into the bout.

"I thought it was going to be a very exciting fight," Edwards explained. "I thought it would be a fast pace and I didn't think it'd end that early."

Michael Johnson earns comeback KO over Danny Castillo

One-upping Mike Pierce's quick comeback earlier in the night, Michael Johnson pulled of the same trick, overcoming a horrific start to knock out Danny Castillo in the second round.

Johnson got knocked down in the first and was nearly finished on two occasions but was able to survive the round.
As it turned out, the failure at finishing him would come back to haunt Castillo.

Johnson caught Castillo with a short left on the chin early in the second that dropped him and from there, he landed a series of crushing right hands from the top to earn the knockout.

The finish of their UFC on FX 5 match came at 1:06 of the second.

"The left, I caught him slipping," Johnson said. "It was just a good shot. I hit him with the left and saw his eyes roll in the back of his head so I couldn't let him get up."

It was the third straight win for Johnson, who is now 12-6. He said afterward that he was gunning for a top 10 spot in the stacked lightweight division.

Castillo saw a three-fight win streak snapped in falling to 14-5. He nearly finished Johnson with strikes and then looked close to closing it out with an arm triangle in the first, only to see Johnson survive and stun him shortly thereafter.

"He caught me in the first round," Johnson said. "Hats off to him. I just had to stay composed. He wasted all his energy. My hands got the best of him and that's a wrap."

Justin Edwards chokes out Josh Neer

Through his first three UFC fights, Justin Edwards had hardly distinguished himself in the octagon. He lost two of his first three, and had gone to a decision each time.

Somehow, he ended up on the main card of UFC on FX 5, and in his biggest opportunity, Edwards delivered.

The 29-year-old welterweight choked Josh Neer unconscious in a first-round technical submission. The fight took only 45 seconds.

Edwards said he was aware that Neer likes to bait fighters with guillotines, but felt he had the squeeze to close him out. That was the case as they clinched early and Edwards started the choke from a standing position. Neer tried to defend and they fell to the mat, and quickly thereafter, the referee realized Neer was out and the finish was called.

Edwards had come into the UFC with the nickname "Fast Eddy" for his propensity to finish in a flash. All of his six fights before signing with the promotion ended in the first round, with four of them lasting less than a minute.

"I thought it was going to be a very exciting fight," he said. "I thought it would be a fast pace and I didn't think it'd end that early."

Edwards is now 8-2 overall while Neer is now 33-12-1.

John Dodson KO's Jussier Formiga, earns flyweight title shot

The list of Ultimate Fighter alumni who has gone on to win UFC championships is a short one. For now, it only holds three names: Matt Serra, Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans.

John Dodson will have a chance to become the fourth.

The dynamic flyweight will get his opportunity to fight for the flyweight title after knocking out Jussier Formiga in the second round of their UFC on FX 5 bout.

Dodson got the finish at 4:35 of the round.

The two engaged in a slow, drawn-out first as both seemed to be intent on finding the range. Formiga landed early and might have taken the round.

Dodson continued on with his methodical approach in the second, but changed the complexion of the bout three minutes into the round by dropping Formiga with a left. Perhaps wary of the Brazilian's ground game, Dodson didn't engage him there, and Formiga got back to his feet. About one minute later, Dodson crushed him with another left, and this time, he pounced, firing off a series of lefts. Formiga turned his back and took a few shots until the referee stepped in to stop it.

The win sets Dodson up for a date with newly minted UFC flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson.

"Well it's going to be the super-fastest fight you've ever seen," he said. "'Mighty Mouse is going to be just as fast. It's going to be like lighting. Please have it on DVR, rewind it and watch it in slow-motion."

As of now, there is no timeframe on that bout.

Dodson will bring a 14-5 record into the title match.

Meanwhile, Formiga, who was making his UFC debut, fell to 14-2.

Jake Ellenberger edges Jay Hieron

Since arriving in the UFC, Jake Ellenberger has always been in exciting fights. He's had spectacular finishes, fought split decisions and suffered defeat after seeming on the verge of sure victory. Returning after his most bitter loss, a knockout to Martin Kampmann in June, Ellenberger returned with a conservative style at UFC on FX 5.

While his new approach didn't agree with fans, it did win sway with the judges, as he earned a unanimous decision over Jay Hieron by identical scores of 29-28.

The victory avenged the first loss of Ellenberger's career, which came against Hieron while both were in the IFL back in 2006.
Ellenberger never came close to finishing Hieron, using a patient striking style from the outside. He did take Hieron down twice and on one of those occasions, did some damage from the top position with short elbows, leading to a cut on Hieron's face.

Hieron was able to get back to his feet both times, but he had trouble sustaining any offense over the duration of the three-round co-main event. By the final round, the crowd was booing, but the win still had to feel good for Ellenberger.

He's now 28-6.

Hieron was fighting in the UFC for the first time in seven years, but he'll have to wait for another opportunity to earn his first octagon win. With the loss, he fell to 23-6.

Antonio Silva knocks out Travis Browne

Eighteen months ago, Antonio Silva was surging towards the top of the heavyweight division after a stunning knockout of Fedor Emelianenko. But his progress stalled shortly thereafter, with losses to Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez. Faced with the possibility that he could be cut with a third straight loss, Silva was in must-win mode heading into his UFC on FX 5 main event with Travis Browne, and he performed like it.

Silva ended his short losing streak with the help of a crushing right hand, as he floored Browne against the fence and then finished with a series of ground strikes en route to a first-round technical knockout.

The official time was 3:27.

Browne got off to a good start, throwing a wide variety of offense early on with front kicks, spinning back fists and other athletic strikes rarely seen from massive heavyweights. But somewhere along the way, it seemed as though Browne injured his left knee. The first sign of that came when Browne tried to throw a punch, his leg buckled and he nearly fell over.

He kept fighting, and actually landed a stinging right hook at one point. But a short time later, Silva backed Browne against the fence and cracked him with a vicious overhand right. Browne went down and Silva landed a series of ground strikes before the ref stepped in.

Browne immediately tried to get up but fell to the ground again before clutching at his left knee. He needed assistance walking out of the cage.

Silva is now 17-4.

The loss was the first in Browne's pro career, as he fell to 13-1-1.

Injury leads to defeat, but Travis Browne makes no excuses

Fate can be so cruel. You can have a perfect training camp and be filled with confidence, only to have one thing go unexpectedly wrong and everything else unravel. That's exactly what happened to Travis Browne at UFC on FX 5 Fighting in his first UFC main event, Browne came out with a new style that highlighted his athleticism. It was supposed to be his coming-out party as a heavyweight contender, but his body betrayed him.

At some point of the fight -- Browne said it might have been the very first kick he threw -- his left hamstring popped. The extent of the injury isn't known, but it soon became clear he wasn't working on a stable foundation. At one point, his leg nearly gave out and he stumbled before catching his balance. He tried to adjust by switching to a southpaw style. But on one wheel, he was fighting at a disadvantage.

Suddenly, his athletic style was gone. He was shuffling his steps. He was a more stationary target. And not much later, his opponent Antonio Silva caught him. Make no mistake about it, the punch -- a crushing overhand right -- would have rocked Browne no matter how many good working legs he had. It was the beginning of the end, as Silva followed up with ground strikes for the stoppage win.

Browne could hardly walk off on his own, needing help from his corners to leave the octagon. But afterward, when he could have used the injury as an excuse, he refused to do it. Perhaps with two good legs, he would have sidestepped the strike. Perhaps he wouldn't have let himself be trapped against the fence. We'll never know. Taking the classy route, Browne wouldn't let the speculation get very far, anyway. After briefly answering a question about how he'd suffered the injury, Browne put the focus back on the victor.

"Putting that aside," he said, "'Bigfoot' came out and won the fight. Not trying to take anything away from the guy. Come back stronger."

You could tell from the way he spoke and the look on his face that he was beyond disappointed. Somewhere inside, he might have been asking "Why me?" but nothing of the sort ever left his lips.

"I don't want to take anything away from Bigfoot," he said, repeating the same sentiment. "He came out, he capitalized on something that he saw, and he won the fight."

He even blamed himself for not following through on his game plan, as though a strategy based upon movement and angles would be easy to continue on one leg. Browne did land one sharp right hook afterward, but it was his last stand.

The defeat will sting for a while. Prior to the fight, UFC president Dana White said that he believed Browne to be a top 10 heavyweight, and he had come in as a significant favorite. It seemed obvious that his performance was going to be measured against those of Cain Velasquez and Daniel Cormier, both of whom had finished Silva in the first round of their respective bouts. An impressive win would prop him up. A lose would set back his progress. Browne had a lot to gain and a plenty at risk, and he's going to have to go home wondering what would have happened if his hamstring hadn't popped, and Silva was made to chase around his athleticism.

"All this does is motivate the hell out of me," he said, his voice trailing off for a few moments. "I’m just ready to come back and heal up. I’m still the same fighter but I’m going to come back even more pissed off and harder this time. I f------ hate losing."

A defeat is never easily swallowed but at least he suffered his with dignity.

Browne's hamstring begaf het en Browne was daarom een makkelijke prooi voor Bigfoot. Shit happens. Heeft niks met onderschatting te maken maar meer met de Wet van Murphy. Misschien had Browne een slechte warming up?

Today, former UFC lightweight, Dennis Hallman, revealed the mysteries personal issues surrounding his
decision to pull out of UFC on FX 5.

On Thursday, during UFC on FX 5 weigh-ins, reports that Hallman missed weight by a whopping seven pounds began to surface. When the UFC offered his opponent Thiago Tavaras a catch-weight bout and 20% of Hallman total purse, Tavaras agreed to face Hallman, but only if Hallman could come within three pounds of the weight limit.

Reports stated that Hallman couldn't come within the three pound allotment and the fight was subsequently cancelled. However, Hallman denies those claims, stating that the reports are inaccurate and that he was able to make the three pound limit set by Tavaras, but choose not to fight due to personal reasons.

Making matters stranger, UFC president Dana White choose to pay Hallman his show and win purse for the bout, right before releasing the fighter from his UFC contract.White somewhat clarified the matter at the UFC on FX 5post-fight press conference, stating that Hallman is
going through difficult life issues and confirming that
the UFC elected to give Hallman his show and win
purse totaling $60,000. In addition, to paying Hallman
his whole purse, the UFC bought him a plane ticket back
to his hometown where he could take care of his
personal issues. Hallman is expected back in the UFC after he is able to make weight in regional shows a couple times.

Below, Hallman explains in his own words, the sensitive situation which occurred days before his fight which caused him to miss weight andhttp://fiveknuckles.com/mma-news/Video-Dennis-Hallman-reveals-personal-issues-which-forced-him-to-pull-out-of-UFC-on-FX-5-bout.html eventually opted out of his fight at UFC on FX 5:

Monday, the Minnesota Office of Combative Sports released fighter pay information from the UFC on FX 5 event, held on Oct. 5 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
