Jens Pulver earns decision win after gruesome groin kick ends bout early

Jens Pulver earned his way back in the win column on Saturday in Singapore at ONE FC 6, but probably in a way he didn't envision or ever wants to experience again. The former UFC lightweight champion was a unanimous decision after a groin kick in the third round rendered him unable to compete as he writhed in devastating agony on the canvas.

The bout started with some promise. Zhao Ya Fei opened with early inside leg kicks from the orthodox position and while Pulver tried to take center cage, he absorbed several right hands that clearly rocked him and forced him to offensive reset. In the second half of the first frame, Pulver adjusted by securing a double leg takedown, although he was unable to do much with it.

At the start the second round, Pulver began to find his groove and set the offensive tone. He landed a solid left hand as well as several effective leg kicks. He soon rocked Zhau with a crushing left that sent the Chinese fighter crashing to the floor. Pulver pounced and moved into north-south throwing multiple, landing stiff knees to Zhao's head and body.

In the third frame, however, is where matters took an ugly turn. Zhou landed a groin kick early in the round, but it was mostly glancing and only stopped the action momentarily. After the action resumed, Zhou almost immediately landed another only this time with significantly more force and precision. The replay showed the kick to be direct, swift and powerful. Pulver writhed in agony on the canvas trying to alleviate the pain with his allotted five minutes of recovery time, biting a towel to cope with the pain. He was eventually removed from the cage on a stretcher.

Zhou was given a yellow card warning for the illegal kick.

According to ONE FC rules, the bout would be decided by judges decision after Pulver was deemed unable to continue once his injury stoppage time had expired. All three judges, who grade the bout as a whole and not by round, awarded the victory to the injured American.

Soo Chul Kim, Kotetsu Boku become first One FC champions

When it came to handing out title in Singapore at ONE FC 6, it was the unexpected and unheralded who had their day.

Korean Soo Chul Kim and Japanese Kotetsu Boku shocked their respective opponents to become the first One FC bantamweight and lightweight champions, respectively.

Kim, a reasonably talented but journeyman fighter from South Korea, looked eager but outmatched in the first round against Leandro Issa. He had difficulty connecting with strikes, largely letting Issa dictate both the position and complexion of the fight through the first round.

By the time the bell rang to initiate the second frame, Kim charged across the ring and connected with a right straight that sent Issa crumbling to the mat. Kim followed up quickly with a few punches on the prostrate Issa, leaving referee Kenichi Serizawa no choice but to call a halt to the action.

Kim stopped Issa in just 15 seconds in the second round, thereby becoming the One FC bantamweight champion.

Boku's fate at featherweight wasn't very different. Despite rocking Zorobabel Moreira in the first round with a blistering right, he spent the vast majority of the fight on the defensive in virtually every phase of the game.

Moreira was largely the hunter through nearly three rounds, attacking with aggressive strikes (particularly effective leg kicks), controlling cage position and using his superior grappling to leave Boku in throes of near desperation on the mat.

By the late third round, however, lightning struck twice in a bottle for Boku who landed another bruising right hand immediately put Moreira on wobbly legs. Boku fired off several more punches - all of them connecting - while Moreira tried desperately to stay on his feet.

The end came from referee stoppage by Yuji Shimata at 1:02 of round 3. Boku becomes the first-ever One FC lightweight champion.

Shinya Aoki quickly submits Arnaud Lepont, asks for One FC title shot

It didn't take long for Shinya Aoki to do what he does best. The former DREAM lightweight champion ran through brash French challenger Arnaud Lepont at ONE FC 6, submitting him via triangle in just over a minute in the very first round.

The bout wasn't close even for a few seconds.

Within seconds of the bell initiating the action, Aoki clinched with Lepont and used and outside trip/body lock takedown to bring the Frenchman to the mat. Within seconds, the disparity in grappling ability was in glaring display as Aoki moved to mount, grapevined Lepont's legs to secure position, then transitioned to high mount as Lepont struggled helplessly underneath.

A few well-placed hammerfists from Aoki gave him all the opening he needed as he reaped Lepont's left arm as the Frenchman tried to block Aoki's ground and pound. The Japanese fighter then angled for an arm bar, but needed more room as the two fighters were close to the fence.

Lepont tried to roll through as Aoki adjusted, but to no avail. Aoki countered his maneuvering by transitioning to a triangle choke, and subsequently rolled to his own back to finish the submission. Lepont grimaced from the squeeze for a few seconds before going completely unconscious. Referee Yuji Shimata called a halt to the action at 1:25 of the very first round.

Following the win, Aoki grabbed the microphone from ONE FC commentator Jason Chambers and exclaimed to the crownd in attendance at the Indoor Singapore Arena, "I want a title shot!" before falling to his knees, sobbing from relief.
