UFC targeting Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira for Super Bowl weekend

According to Brazil's SporTV, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will return to the Octagon on Super Bowl weekend and face off with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

While the UFC hasn't officially announced the bout, a source close to the fight confirmed to MMAFighting.com on Wednesday that the bout is under serious consideration for a planned Feb. 2 event in Las Vegas.

If the fight is finalized, it would mark Evans' first bout since losing a unanimous decision to champion Jon Jones on April 21. The loss snapped a four-fight win streak for the 33-year-old Evans (17-2-1).

Nogueira (20-5), meanwhile, has not fought since a first-round stoppage of Tito Ortiz on Dec. 10, 2011. He was slated to meet Alexander Gustafsson in April, but the 36-year-old Brazilian had to pull out of the fight due to a knee injury.

Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar slated for UFC 156 on Super Bowl Weekend

Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar is back on.

According to UFC president Dana White, the highly-anticipated featherweight title fight will take place on the promotion's Super Bowl Saturday card next year, slated for Feb. 2, 2013, in Las Vegas. The news was first reported on FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight."

The card will be dubbed UFC 156, not UFC 157, which has been misreported by other outlets, according to UFC officials.

The 145-pound superfight, as some have called it, was supposed to take place at UFC 153 earlier this month, however, Aldo pulled out due to a leg injury suffered in a motorcycle accident. Aldo (21-1) hasn't fought since he knocked out Chad Mendes at UFC 142 back in January.

Edgar (14-3-1), who will be making his UFC featherweight debut, is coming off two straight lightweight title losses to Benson Henderson earlier this year.

Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva on Super Bowl weekend

So much for Alistair Overeem's immediate title shot.

The sidelined UFC heavyweight star plans on making his return to the Octagon at UFC 156 in Las Vegas, where he'll meet Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, according to a Tuesday report by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The match is contingent upon Overeem being relicensed by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Overeem is suspended in Nevada through Dec. 27 and must apply and be approved for a new fighter's license before the bout can be made official.

Overeem, the former Strikeforce and Dream heavyweight champion who trains with the Blackzilians in Florida, made his UFC debut on Dec. 30, 2011, with a first-round finish of Brock Lesnar. Overeem was scheduled to meet Junior dos Santos for the heavyweight title in May, but he failed an unannounced drug test held at a March press conference promoting the fight.

While serving his suspension, Overeem has agressively lobbied for a title shot with dos Santos upon his returned, but the timing of dos Santos' title defense against Cain Velasquez on Dec. 29 precludes such a fight.

In the Review-Journal report, NAC executive director Keith Kizer explained Overeem will have to appear before the commission in person to apply for his license, then described the procedure.

"The commission can go any way they want to at that meeting," Kizer told the paper. "They could say yes, they could say no, they could say yes with conditions," Kizer told the paper. "All of that will be on the table, but nothing can happen as far as licensure until after (Dec. 27)."

If he's cleared, Overeem (36-11) and Silva (17-4) will meet in what's shaping up to be a strong card on Feb. 2 at Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center. The bout is headlined by a quasi-super fight, as former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar challenges current featherweight champion Jose Aldo Jr.; and Rashad Evans is expected to return and meet Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

For his part, Silva (17-4) snapped a two-fight losing streak with his first-round knockout of previously unbeaten Travis Browne on Oct. 5.

Valt mijns inziens mee dus.

Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia set for UFC 156

Another fight of divisional consequence has been added to UFC 156 on Feb. 2.

Jon Fitch will fight Demian Maia in a welterweight showdown at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on the evening before the Super Bowl.

The bout features two veterans looking to build on recent momentum. Maia (17-4) has won both of his fights since dropping down from middleweight: First a quick win over Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 148 after Kim suffered a fluke injury; then an impressive neck-crank submission win over Rick Story at UFC 153.

Fitch (24-4-1, 1 no-contest), meanwhile, is looking to return to the form which had him ranked in most pound-for-pound polls as recently as two years ago. After enduring an injury-ravaged year and a half, Fitch turned in one of the most impressive performances of his career at UFC 153, as he defeated up-and-coming star Erick Silva with a Fight of the Night-winning unanimous decision.

UFC officials announced the bout on Thursday.

UFC 156 features several bouts of significance in their divisions: Jose Aldo Jr. defends the featherweight title against Frankie Edgar; light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira meet up; and heavyweight Alistair Overeem is expected to face Antonio Silva, if Overeem is cleared by the Nevada Athletic Commission when his suspension ends.

Erick Silva vs. Jay Hieron set for UFC 156

Erick Silva will look to get his career back on track on Super Bowl weekend.

According to the UFC Brazil Twitter account, Silva will meet Jay Hieron at UFC 156 on Feb. 2 in Las Vegas.

Silva (14-3, 1 NC) most recently dropped a unanimous decision to Jon Fitch at UFC 153 last month.

Hieron (23-6) also lost via unanimous decision to Jake Ellenberger at UFC on FX 5 last month. The fight marked Hieron's first in the UFC in seven years.

No word on whether the welterweight fight will air on the pay-per-view main card or the prelims just yet.

UFC 156, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar for the featherweight title, will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Update: according to Hieron, the fight will take place on the main card

Dunham-Tibau added to UFC 156; Benavidez-McCall now official

The UFC's Super Bowl weekend card continues to grow with a lightweight bout added to the mix.

Evan Dunham (13-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) is set to meet Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Gleison Tibau (26-8 MMA, 11-6 UFC) at UFC 156 in February. UFC officials recently announced the fight booking.

In addition, a recently reported flyweight bout between Jospeh Benavidez (16-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Ian McCall (11-3-1 MMA, 0-1-1 UFC) has been made official.

UFC 156 takes place Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. The main event is a featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo and former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar.

Dunham in September won his second straight "Fight of the Night" bonus, but it came with a cost – another check in the loss column. Dunham, who started his career 11-0, lost for the third time in five fights when T.J. Grant took a unanimous decision from him at UFC 152 in Toronto. Dunham had been on a two-fight streak, including a doctor's stoppage TKO of Nik Lentz at UFC on FOX 2 that also earned him a fight night bonus.

Dunham lost a controversial split decision to Sean Sherk at UFC 119 – also a "Fight of the Night," then dropped a TKO to Melvin Guillard at the UFC's "Fight for the Troops 2" show nearly two years ago. Back-to-back wins over Shamar Bailey and Lentz had him surging again until Grant beat him in September.

Tibau in October got back in the win column with a unanimous decision victory over Francisco Trinaldo at UFC 153 in Brazil. The win gave him four victories in his past five fights with just a decision loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in July keeping him from perfection over the past two years.

Benavidez topped Yasuhiro Urushitani by TKO in the first round of the UFC's four-man flyweight tournament in March. But in the tournament final at UFC 152, Benavidez suffered a split-decision defeat to Demetrious Johnson, who won the UFC's inaugural flyweight belt with the win.

McCall had won four consecutive fights and claimed Tachi Palace Fights' flyweight title, which ranked him as one of the world's top 125-pounder fighters. But after coming to the UFC, he had an infamous split draw with Johnson in the flyweight tourney's opening round, then lost to him by unanimous decision in their June rematch.

The latest UFC 156 card now includes:
Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar - for featherweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
Jay Hieron vs. Erick Silva
Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall
Evan Dunham vs. Gleison Tibau

Edwin Figueroa-Francisco Rivera booked for UFC 156 in February

A pair of bantamweights has been booked for the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card.

Edwin Figueroa (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will meet Francisco Rivera (8-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 156 in February. UFC officials recently announced the fight booking, saying verbal agreements are in place for the matchup.

Figueroa will return for the first time in a year when he steps back in the octagon. His most recent outing, in fact, came on this past February's Super Bowl weekend card, where he picked up a split-decision victory over Alex Caceres. Caceres was penalized a rare two points in the fight for kicks to the groin, which turned out to be the difference between a win for Figueroa and a loss.

Prior to that, he got back in the win column with a second-round TKO of Jason Reinhardt in August 2011 after dropping his UFC debut in a "Fight of the Night" performance against Michael McDonald.

Figueroa was expected to be back in action against Ken Stone this past June at UFC on FX 4, but an injury forced him out and, coincidentally, he was replaced by Rivera, the man he'll face in February. (Rivera later was forced out of the bout, himself.)

Rivera gets back to work for the first time since July. At UFC 149, he picked up a knockout win against Roland Delorme. But after the fight, he tested positive for a banned substance and his win was overturned to a no contest. Rivera dropped his UFC debut at the TUF 13 Finale against Reuben Duran. But after two wins outside the promotion, he returned in May and picked up a unanimous decision win over Alex Soto.

The latest UFC 156 card now includes:Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar - for featherweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
Jay Hieron vs. Erick Silva
Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall

Strikeforce lightweight Bobby Green meets Jacob Volkmann at UFC 156

Five-time Strikeforce veteran Bobby Green (19-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will make his octagon debut at February's UFC 156 event against nine-time UFC fighter Jacob Volkmann (15-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC).

USA TODAY Sports today learned from sources close to the fighters that both athletes have verbally agreed to the matchup and bout agreements are expected to be finalized shortly.

Green vs. Volkmann is expected to take place on the evening's preliminary card, but UFC executives have yet to make an official announcement.

The booking comes less than 24 hours after Strikeforce officials announced the promotion's Jan. 12 event would be the last to air with broadcast partner Showtime. The promotion isn't expected to host any more events, and Green now joins Strikeforce veterans Derek Brunson, Caros Fodor, Robbie Lawler and Bobby Voelker as Strikeforce athletes booked into UFC fights in the past 24 hours.

A Southern California native, Green was relegated to curtain-jerking status in his final two Strikeforce appearances. Still, he carries a four-fight win streak into his UFC debut. The 26-year-old could be unbeaten in his past six fights were it not for a contentious split-decision loss to Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante in July 2011.

Green has been fighting professionally since 2008, and three of his five career losses have come to fighters who would go on to fight in the UFC.

Meanwhile, Volkmann is a former three-time All-American wrestler at the University of Minnesota who is 5-1 in his past six UFC appearances.

Fighting professionally since 2007, Volkmann has made news on a few occasions for his political criticisms of President Barack Obama. His wrestling-based style hasn't always been well-received by MMA fans, but his winning streak is currently one of the best in the UFC's 155-pound division.

Alistair Overeem applies for Nevada license

The official verdict for sanctioning the scheduled Feb. 2 Alistair Overeem (36-11, 1 no contest) vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (17-4) fight at UFC 156 will come down on Jan. 8 at a hearing before the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer confirmed that Overeem sent in an application Thursday morning for a new license. It was the first day he was allowed to do so after being turned down at a hearing on March 27 for a license because he failed a test for elevated levels of testosterone.

At the March hearing, Overeem claimed that he didn't know that a solution he was given for treatment of a rib injury contained testosterone. The commission's usual protocol is if a license is turned down then the fighter is not allowed to apply again for one year.

Even though Overeem had only been given a conditional license for his previous fight, on Dec. 30, 2011 when he beat Brock Lesnar in the first round, it was contingent on passing several unannounced tests in the upcoming months. The decision was made at the previous hearing to cut his waiting period to nine months. The leniency in punishment drew significant criticism at the time.

The commission had already given approval to UFC to advertise the fight. The heavyweight battle will be the No. 2 fight underneath a Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo Jr., featherweight title match for the show at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The advertising was to note the fight would take place pending commission approval.

Overeem will have to appear at the hearing and answer questions from the commission, similar to his prior hearing.

Overeem had been considered the No. 1 contender for the heavyweight title coming off his win over Lesnar. He was scheduled for a title shot at champion Junior Dos Santos on May 26 in Las Vegas when he tested positive at a surprise test given immediately after a press conference for the fight. He was denied the license due to the positive test. At the time, he was not a licensed fighter in Nevada as his conditional license term had expired.

Since his suspension, Overeem has submitted several clean test results to both the UFC and Nevada State Athletic Commission.

If he is licensed, and beats Silva without suffering a serious injury, Overeem is expected to face the winner of the upcoming Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez fight in the first heavyweight title match of 2013.

Three other fighters on UFC 156 will also be subject to commission approval - Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Demian Maia and Jay Hieron.

All have had to submit to more extensive physicals, which include an EKG, chest X-ray, blood work and a urinalysis because of being born 1977 or earlier. Nevada requires all fighters who will turn 36 during a calender year to undergo more rigorous medicals and get approved at a commission hearing. None of the fighters are required to be at the hearing in person.

Nogueira is scheduled against Rashad Evans in a light heavyweight match, Maia faces Jon Fitch in a welterweight match, and Hieron faces Erick Silva in a welterweight match.

Bobby Green vs. Jacob Volkmann now official for UFC 156

A lightweight bout between Strikeforce vet Bobby Green (19-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and UFC regular Jacob Volkmann (15-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) is now official for UFC 156.

MMAjunkie first reported the bout, and the promotion recently made it official.

UFC 156 takes place Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The event's main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Green vs. Volkmann is expected to be part of the preliminary card, though its exact placement hasn't been determined. Eight fights are now official for the event.

Green joins four Strikeforce athletes on their way to the UFC following the announcement that the smaller promotion is closing shop with a Jan. 12 event in Oklahoma City. During his time in the Strikeforce hexagon, the 26-year-old Green amassed an impressive 4-1 record, and in August he defeated Matt Ricehouse. A contentious loss to veteran Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante was his only setback.

The 32-year-old Volkmann, meanwhile, is on the rebound following a submission win over Shane Roller at UFC on FX 5, which eased the sting of a submission loss to Paul Sass. The defeat snapped a five-fight win streak that had the former welterweight on the verge of title contention.

The current UFC 156 card includes:

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar - for featherweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Bobby Green vs. Jacob Volkmann
Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall
Evan Dunham vs. Gleison Tibau
Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
Jay Hieron vs. Erick Silva

Tyron Woodley replaces injured Erick Silva against Jay Hieron at UFC 156

Another top Strikeforce fighter has been welcomed into the UFC fold. Welterweight contender Tyron Woodley will replace an injured Erick Silva opposite Jay Hieron at UFC 156, promotion officials announced on Wednesday night.

UFC 156 takes place February 2, 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. A featherweight superfight pitting current champion Jose Aldo against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar headlines the night's pay-per-view card.

With the short-notice fill-in, Woodley (10-1) joins an ever-growing list of Strikeforce veterans to transfer over to Zuffa's primary promotion. The 30-year-old racked up an impressive 8-1 record in four years under the Strikeforce banner, culminating in an electrifying loss to Nate Marquardt last July for the vacant welterweight title.

Standing across the cage will be Hieron (23-6), who eyes an elusive first UFC victory in his fourth attempt. Following a successful run through Bellator's season four welterweight tournament, Hieron was scheduled to rematch Jake Ellenberger in the co-main event of UFC 151. That bout ultimately shifted over to UFC on FX 5, where Hieron fell short in the eyes of the judges, losing a unanimous decision.

Yves Edwards vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg added to February's UFC 156 fight card

A lightweight bout between Strikeforce import Isaac Vallie-Flagg (13-3-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and "Thugjitsu Master" Yves Edwards (42-18-1 UFC, 10-6 UFC) is the latest addition to February's UFC 156 event.

UFC officials today announced the new booking.

Featuring a headliner of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (21-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) against former lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar (14-3-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC), UFC 156 takes place Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The evening's main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. UFC officials did not reveal where the Vallie-Flagg vs. Edwards matchup will take place on the evening's lineup.

Flag enters the UFC after earning back-to-back split-decision wins over the Gesias"JZ" Cavalcante and Brian Melancon under the Strikeforce banner. The Jackson-Winkeljohn fighter has fought professionally since 2003 and currently boasts an 11-fight unbeaten streak after opening his career at just 3-3.

Meanwhile, Edwards returns quickly to action after earning a "Knockout of the Night" stoppage of Jeremy Stephens at December's UFC on FOX 5 event. Due to injury and the odd fight-day arrest of Jeremy Stephens at October's UFC on FX 5 event, Edwards fought just once in 2012.

With the new addition, UFC 156 now includes:

Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar - for featherweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
Evan Dunham vs. Gleison Tibau
Bobby Green vs. Jacob Volkmann
Edwin Figueroa vs. Francisco Rivera
Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall
Jay Hieron vs. Tyron Woodley
Yves Edwards vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg

Overeem unanimously granted MMA license by NSAC

Today, Alistair Overeem is meeting with the NSAC to apply for his license as an MMA athlete. He will be asked to present evidence that he has been clean during his suspension and will find out if he is to be licensed today. John Morgan from MMAJunkie is on the scene:
-Blasting through a few reservation dates and grant requests, and now it's time for Overeem.

-Jovial start to Overeem's hearing, as he's questioned about the weather in Florida, his new home.

-Overeem: "We've done everything we can to correct the errors that were made."

-Kizer said Overeem sent in five tests between June and November that were all clean. Additionally, he was tested by NSAC on 11/16 and 12/21.

-Alistair said he's been training during his time off and is actually bigger than he was before.

-Alistair said he has a new nutritionist and a better medical team to ensure he's always clean.

-Pat Lundvall asking if Alistair has insight on any lessons NSAC can learn from this situation.

-Overeem suggest NSAC needs to address the difficulty of arranging testing internationally.

-Motion is on the table and approved unanimously. Overeem has his license.

Chico Camus vs. Dustin Kimura joins UFC 156 Super Bowl show

A bantamweight bout between Chico Camus (12-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and undefeated promotional newcomer Dustin Kimura (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is the newest addition to next month's UFC 156 card.

UFC officials today announced the bout.

UFC 156 takes place Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Camus vs. Kimura will be part of the prelims.

Camus, a Roufusport fighter based out of Wisconsin, recently made his UFC debut and scored a unanimous-decision victory over well-regarded Dustin Pague at UFC 150. It marked his fourth straight victory, all of which have come via decision. However, seven of his first eight wins came via stoppage.

He now takes on Kimura, a Hawaiian submission specialist who turned pro three-and-a-half years ago. After competing for a handful of Hawaiian promotions, Kimura headed to the Philippines in November for PXC 34, where he defeated Guy Delumeau (16-7-3 at the time) with a third-round knockout.

With the new addition, UFC 156 now includes:

Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar - for featherweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
Evan Dunham vs. Gleison Tibau
Bobby Green vs. Jacob Volkmann

NSAC licenses Alistair Overeem for UFC 156 fight with Antonio Silva

Following a Tuesday hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Alistair Overeem has been cleared to fight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in the co-main event of February's UFC 156 event.

Overeem was required to appear in front of the commission after the NSAC declined to license him (http://www.mmajunkie.com/news/2012/04/alistair-overeem-denied-license-to-fight-may-reapply-with-nsac-on-december-27) for a planned May 2012 fight with Junior dos Santos due to a failed drug screen. During the hearing, he said the ordeal proved educational, and he has since taken steps to ensure he never again fails a drug screen.

"I think we've done everything we could to correct ourselves from the errors that were made, and I'm just ready to get my life back on track," Overeem told the commission. "I'm ready to get back to fighting."

NSAC executive director Keith Kizer revealed Overeem sent in five voluntary testing results between June and November and was also subjected to NSAC-administered blood and urine testing on Nov. 16 and Dec. 21. All results were negative. After hearing Overeem's testimony, the NSAC voted unanimously to approve his application

The massively chiseled Overeem has long been at the center of controversy regarding performance-enhancing drug use accusations. The Dutchman long contended he was a "clean fighter" and the "most-tested athlete in sports." However, he was in 2011 suspended by the NSAC when a a pre-UFC 146 drug test was flagged for a 14-to-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, more than twice the 6-to-1 ratio allowed by the commission.

Overeem maintained his innocence throughout his NSAC hearings and suggested a prescribed injection was responsible for his heightened ratios. Still, the NSAC declined to issue him a license and refused to hear a new application before Dec. 27. With the issue behind him, Overeem said he's ready to move forward with his career and is looking forward to UFC 156.

"Today I went for my license," Overeem told MMAjunkie following the hearing. "I'm very happy to inform you guys that I got licensed to fight Feb. 2 in the UFC against 'Bigfoot' Silva.

"For me, it's now back to work, back to entering the gym. I'm already basically in shape, so it's just a couple more weeks of grinding it, and then it's going to be showtime again."

Overeem said he spent his de facto suspension focused on training and has actually added weight since his most recent appearance, a UFC 141 win over Brock Lesnar in December 2011. Overeem credited work with a new nutritionist and medical team for ensuring his testosterone levels are now within allowable limits.

"I just invested in getting to the next level; 2012 was not a lost year" Overeem said. "It was a year of learning from mistakes and preparing for a better 2013."

UFC 156's Alistair Overeem: 'It's just a matter of time' before title shot

If it's possible for a 6-foot-5, 265-pound former champion to fly under the radar, Alistair Overeem may be doing just that.

The buzz this week around UFC 156 seems to be, and likely appropriately so, on the main event featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo and former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar – a superfight of sorts, and one that has been highly anticipated since this past fall.

But sandwiched in the middle of Saturday's main card on pay-per-view is the return of Overeem, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion who has been on the sidelines for more than a year.

Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets Antonio Silva (17-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a bout that should prove to be pivotal for the UFC's heavyweight division. The two heavyweights will throw down at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, site of UFC 156.

Overeem may believe a win over "Bigfoot" could lead to a title shot against Cain Velasquez, who recaptured the title just this past month from Junior Dos Santos. But if that doesn't prove to be the case, he said he will keep on pushing forward.

"I just believe even if the title is (a few fights away), I’m always focused on my next battle," Overeem said this past week on a media call for UFC 156. "Winning the next fight is the most important thing."

Overeem has not lost in more than five years, a knockout loss to Sergei Kharitonov in September 2007 in Japan. Since then, he's on a 12-fight unbeaten streak with just a no contest with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic keeping him from perfection.

His next fight after the loss to Kharitonov, he won Strikeforce's first heavyweight title. But he didn't defend it until an easy win over Brett Rogers two and a half years later.

After a controversial exit from Strikeforce and a change in management, he signed with the UFC and beat Brock Lesnar in a title elimination fight at UFC 141, sending Lesnar into retirement. But before he could get his title shot against Dos Santos, which was scheduled for UFC 146, he failed a pre-fight drug screening when his testosterone-to-epitestosterone level came back higher than the Nevada State Athletic Commission's allowable limit.

The result? He was kept from applying for a license to fight for nine months.

But with that hurdle cleared, Overeem said he kept with the NSAC's drug testing requirement while he was away from competition and the fight with Silva is a go.

Even if a title shot doesn't come with a win over Silva – despite most signs pointing to that being the case – Overeem said him getting a crack at UFC gold is inevitable.

"It’s just a matter of time, in my sense," he said. "We still have one more mountain to climb, and that’s Bigfoot. But to be honest, I do not see any problem."

But in Silva, Overeem faces a highly motivated opponent who originally was hopeful for a fight against the elite-level kickboxing champion in Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix. Overeem was removed from that tournament in the semifinals and replaced with Daniel Cormier, who stopped Silva and went on to win the crown against Josh Barnett.

"I don’t care about the title shot now," Silva said. "I think my focus is on Alistair and I want to fight him. I waited for this fight for two years, and my focus is 100 percent on Alistair. After Feb. 2, I’ll think about other fights.

"Yes, he's a tough guy. He’s a great striking. He’s a complete guy. He’s the best striker in the UFC. But this is not kickboxing. It’s MMA. I’m aware and ready for any situation, and I'm going to win this fight."

Overeem plans to 'destroy' Silva at UFC 156, wants Velasquez and Dos Santos

Alistair Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is itching to get back into the cage for the first time in more than a year, and he's got a specific plan: "Demolition Man" wants to "destroy" Antonio Silva (17-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) before chasing down both Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.

"Everybody is dangerous at this level," Overeem told MMAjunkie. "You should not underestimate anybody. That being said, I just need to destroy Antonio in the first or second round and then move on to the next guy."

Overeem, of course, is returning from a year away from the sport after failing a Nevada State Athletic Commission-issued drug screen and failing to receive licensure for a planned UFC 146 bout with then-champion Dos Santos. As a result, he hasn't competed since a December 2011 destruction of Brock Lesnar, but he insists his layoff has actually proved beneficial.

"It wasn't a wasted year," Overeem said. "I'm an optimist, so I always make the best of the situation. That being said, I've been hitting the gym like I had a fight. I improved my game. I moved to Miami. So in that sense, it was not a loss because everything just went on.

"After moving to Miami, I actually had some time off to get to know the city, who's who in town, and if you have fight after fight lined up after each other, you can't do that. So I'm happy that it went the way it went, and I had my time to explore the city. When that was done, I went into fight camp, and now it's time to fight."

The planned matchup with Dos Santos was intriguing not only from a style perspective but also because the Brazilian had a few choice words for Overeem, insinuating his physique was developed in a laboratory.

In the time since then, Dos Santos relinquished his belt to Velasquez, meaning Overeem's title shot, if earned, would come against the new champion rather than the man that had badmouthed him.

Overeem said he's expecting to fight them both.

"Cain proves to be an entirely different challenge than Dos Santos," Overeem said. "That being said, for me, it's fine. I already hold three belts. I'm a three-time world champion. I have the attitude of fighting anybody, anywhere. For me it doesn't matter if it's Dos Santos or Cain.

"I see myself fighting Dos Santos at a later stage. I would have preferred to fight him for the title, but his decisions have made this reality."

First, of course, is Silva. Bookmakers consider Overeem as much as a 4-to-1 favorite, implying he's being given an 80 percent chance of winning. Most pundits and fans seem to be of the same belief, and Saturday's result seems almost a formality.

If that's true, and if Overeem can deliver the type of performance that has earned him the moniker "Demolition Man," then Velasquez and the UFC title should be next in line.

Overeem isn't willing to discuss those plans just yet. Instead, he's anxious to re-establish himself in the UFC's heavyweight division.

"It's 2013, and the world did not come to an end," Overeem said. "This fight is a comeback for me, and it's a new beginning.

"I appreciate the UFC for being very supportive during my time off. What happens next isn't up to me. I just have to get the win."

With title shot dangling for Overeem, tension builds between Dutch star and 'Bigfoot'

You've heard by now that Alistair Overeem has promised to destroy Antonio Silva at UFC 156. "Bigfoot" has heard it, too. And apparently, that has made the giant angry.

Silva had just spent the better part of an hour convincing reporters that he wasn't bothered by Overeem's words, but when the Brazilian got within speaking distance of his opponent, that all changed. The two met for a photo opportunity on Thursday and Silva wasted no time warning Overeem that he had crossed the line.

In a tense moment, Silva and Overeem neared each other and Silva appeared to make contact, with his massive left hand covering most of Overeem's face. Silva then began to jaw at him. As Dana White attempted to step in between the massive heavyweights, Overeem responded and the two exchanged words and glares even as they backed away from each other to give way to the next pairing of fighters.

According to White, the exchange went like this:

Silva: "You better start showing respect."

Overeem: "I'm going to f------ destroy you."

The fight between the two is a long time in coming, and has had personal ramifications in both of their lives. It was originally supposed to happen in the Strikeforce heavyweight world Grand Prix, when both men advanced to the semifinals and were on the same side of the bracket. Fate intervened at that point, as Overeem declined a scheduled date with Silva due to an injury, causing Strikeforce to remove him from the tournament and eventually cut him. Silva went on to lose to replacement Daniel Cormier.

Fast forward to February 2012, and Overeem joined the Florida-based Blackzilians camp, which happened to be the home of Silva. Rather than train alongside Overeem, Silva opted to pick up and move to American Top Team, saying that an eventual bout between them was inevitable.

As it turns out, he was right.

And as it happens, the stakes are high for Overeem. White said that with a win, Overeem will advance to a championship match against Cain Velasquez. But for Silva, there is no such promise. After snapping a two-fight losing skid with a knockout over Travis Browne, Silva is hoping to re-establish his momentum with a win that would be his most significant since beating Fedor Emelianenko about two years ago.

With his words, he said the matchup against Overeem is nothing personal, but with his actions, he said otherwise.

"This is the first time," Silva said when asked if he'd ever been the target of pre-fight trash talk. "I'm very surprised. I don't like that. We are professionals. We need respect. Both guys need respect."

UFC 156 official weigh-in results: Champ Aldo (145), Edgar (144) hit mark

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Feb 01, 2013 at 7:30 pm ET
http://www.mmajunkie.com/files/thumb/51422/0LAS VEGAS – MMAjunkie.com was on scene and reporting live from today's UFC 156 fighter weigh-ins, where headliners Jose Aldo (145 pounds) and Frankie Edgar (144) each made weight.

The festivities took place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, which also hosts Saturday's pay-per-view event.

Edgar, fighting for the first time at 145 pounds, rushed anxiously to the scale and did not appear to be impacted negatively by the move to a new division and said he was ready to make history as just the third man to win a UFC title in two divisions.

"I know he's been a great champion for a while," Edgar said of Aldo. "I feel better than ever at 145

"Nothing you want bad enough is going to be given to you, so I'm ready to take it tomorrow."

Meanwhile, a stoic Aldo also hit the mark and insisted Saturday's result would see Edgar moving back to 155 pounds.

"He's a great fighter, but I'm going to send him back to his weight class," Aldo said through a translator.

The full ceremony was not without a hitch as the first three fighters to hit the scale all missed their required limits. Edwin Figueroa and Francisco Rivera were each given time to lose the additional weight. Dustin Kimura weighed 139.5 pounds for his bantamweight fight with Chico Camus but will not reweigh and will instead forfeit 20 percent of his purse.

The full UFC 156 weigh-in results include:
