Food poisoning moves featherweight final to Bellator 84

In one of the most bizarre nights in Bellator Fighting Championships history, food poisoning canceled Friday's night's Bellator 83 main event.

Moments before Rad Martinez (14-2 MMA, 4-0 BFC) and Shahbulat Shamhalaev (11-1-1 MMA, 2-0 BFC) were scheduled to enter the cage at New Jersey's Caesars Atlantic City, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board waved off the fight.

"Unfortunately, Shahbulat Shamhalaev got food poisoning, and he's been throwing up most of the day," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney explained on the evening's MTV2 broadcast. "He was throwing up in the locker room. The commission saw him, and of course it's incumbent upon them to look out for the safety of the fighters."

Cameras showed an obviously dejected Shamhalaev in the locker room. Still, his chance at featherweight tournament gold was not taken away, as the fight has been rescheduled for next week's Bellator 84 event, which takes place at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind.

"[Shamhalaev] is throwing up," Rebney explained. "This is an incredibly tough fight that's probably going to go deep into the third against a world-class guy in Rad Martinez, so the reality is the fight's been canceled for tonight. The good news is that we will be able to do it next week."

Leone takes split over former champ Makovsky

After suffering through a 1-5 stretch, Anthony Leone is now undefeated in his past three appearances and may soon find himself in a Bellator bantamweight tournament after earning a split-decision win over former champion Zach Makovsky.

Makovsky opened patiently from the outside, firing off the occasional kick as he circled at range. An early takedown came with ease, but he was unable to keep the action on the floor. Leone stalked on the restart and landed an impressive flurry with a little more than a minute remaining before coming up short on a takedown attempt. Still, the late action was the best of the frame.

Leone again walked forward in the second round before engaging in a clinch against the cage. It was actually Makovsky who reversed courses and scored a takedown, but Leone again popped right back to his feet before eventually returning the favor. Makovsky then tried to transition to the back in a scramble, but Leone slipped out and established top position. Makovsky scrambled underneath as he looked for submission, but Leone countered well as they returned to the feet, where the round ended.

The action started quickly in the final frame, and Leone immediately secured a guillotine choke and looked to finish the fight. Makovsky survived the hold and briefly scrambled to top position, but Leone again swept to the top and established the dominant position.

The pair returned to the feet in the latter stages of the round, but Leone again found himself on top of his opponent when Makovsky went for a guillotine choke that failed, and his opponent finished the round again in the dominant position. Leone had to sweat through the reading of split results, but he did eventually earn the nod on two of the three judges' cards.

"I love the judges tonight," Leone said after the win. "Usually I don't love them. Tonight I love them."

Leone (12-5 MMA, 2-2 BFC) is now 4-1 in his past five appearances. Makovsky (14-4 MMA, 6-2 BFC) falls short in his first appearance since losing his title to current champ Eduardo Dantas.

Eye stuns Gurgel in 58 seconds

So much for being a groupie.

In a female grudge match, underdog 125-pounder Jessica "Evil" Eye turned in a scintillating performance with an incredible first-round technical-submission win over Bellator 115-pound champion Zoila Gurgel.

The fight started quickly, as the two rivals rushed forward and fired and fired punched with bad intentions. But it was Eye who scored first and dropped Gurgel with a crisp straight. Eye immediately pounced for the finish, but Gurgel somehow recovered and worked back to her feet. Unfortunately for the "Warrior Princess," things then went from bad to worse.

Eye stayed tight to the body and alertly grabbed a standing arm-triangle choke and squeezed for the finish. Gurgel tried desperately to wiggle free, but Eye adjusted and squeezed until her opponent went to sleep just 58 seconds into the fight.

"I spent a lot of time with boxers, and their pace is much different than MMA fighters, so it helped me to set a tone right off the bat," Eye said after the win. "It's either be struck or be the striker."

Eye (9-1 MMA, 3-0 BFC) now boasts a six-fight win streak over the past 15 months. Gurgel (12-2 MMA, 6-1 BFC) sees a seven-fight win streak snapped.
