Daron Cruickshank finishes lopsided win with head kick KO of Henry Martinez

Every fighter has his own personal highlight reel, and Daron Cruickshank added a new clip to his on Saturday night. It was seven minutes and 57 seconds long, the length of his UFC on FOX 5 fight with Henry Martinez.

Cruickshank obliterated Martinez, battering him throughout, and finally finishing with a head kick knockout just past the midway point of round two.

He'd thrown all kinds of offense for the preceding minutes, hurting Martinez badly in several other sequences, including a kick to the body that bent his opponent over and nearly led to the finish.

"I was always taught take out the body and the head will come," he said afterward.
Good advice.

While Cruickshank wasn't able to finish after a barrage against the fence, that was only a testament to Martinez's incredible durability. By the end of the round, however, the rout was on.

The second was more of the same until Cruickshank finished. According to stats provider FightMetric, Cruickshank out-landed Martinez in significant strikes 42-11, but even that was not telling of how one-sided it was.

The win was his second straight since joining the UFC, and he's now 12-2 overall.

Martinez, who missed weight by two pounds, costing him 20 percent of his purse, fell to 9-3.

Yves Edwards KO's Jeremy Stephens

Yves Edwards waited two extra months to face Jeremy Stephens, but made short work of the "Lil' Heathen" when he finally got his opportunity.

Edwards became the first man ever to knock out Stephens, dropping him with a right hook and then finishing with ground strikes en route to a first-round win at UFC on FOX 5.

The finish came at 1:55.

"I feel really good," Edwards said. "Jeremy is a tough guy, we trained for each other for a fight in October. It didn't happen, but we got it done tonight."

Edwards certainly did get it done.

The early seconds saw Stephens moving forward and firing off power strikes, but that approach left him open for the finishing sequence. As Stephens fired off an overhand right, Edwards countered with a short but powerful hook that landed first and on the button. The strike floored Stephens, and Edwards pounced, smashing him with elbows and punches from side control until the ref had seen enough.

Edwards improved to 42-18-1 with the win.

Stephens was fighting for the first time after a bizarre October episode in Minnesota that saw him arrested on the morning of a scheduled bout with Edwards. He was eventually extradited to Iowa, where he is facing two felony charges of willful injury and causing bodily injury or mental illness.

The loss was his third straight, dropping his record to 20-9.

Matt Brown knocks out Mike Swick

There was a stretch in Matt Brown's career when it looked like he didn't belong in the UFC. During that time, he lost four of five, leaving many to wonder if his octagon career was reaching its end. But that time is now safely behind him. After his performance at Saturday night's UFC on FOX 5, Brown is no longer in danger. In fact, he's surging.

The rugged welterweight scored the biggest win of his career, knocking out Mike Swick for his fourth straight win.

The finish came at 2:31 of round two.

Brown had likely won the first round, threatening Swick with a D'arce and later a triangle to go with his power strikes. In the second, Swick looked worn down from constantly defending himself, and Brown continued moving forward unconcerned about Swick's power.

Finally, about midway through the round, Brown landed a crushing left hook, and as Swick was falling to the mat, he landed a right hand behind it. That was all he needed as Swick crashed to the mat and the referee stepped in.

The victory was also Brown's fourth of the calendar year.

He is now 16-11 while Swick fell to 15-5 after suffering his first knockout loss since a 2004 defeat at the hands of Chris Leben.

Rory MacDonald manhandles B.J. Penn, calls out Carlos Condit

Rory MacDonald made a statement before UFC on FOX 5 by warning B.J. Penn that he would hurt him badly, and made one in the fight, following through on his promise.

The 23-year-old rising star couldn't finish Penn, but he spent most of three rounds beating him up en route to a lopsided unanimous decision victory. The judges scored it for him 30-26, 30-26, 30-27.

By the end, the left side of Penn's face was swollen and he had a cut over his right eye.

Fighting for the first time since ending his brief semi-retirement, Penn could never get his offense going, mostly because MacDonald did a masterful job of fighting at distance with kicks and jabs early. The power followed, as MacDonald spent plenty of time wading in with elbow strikes, head kicks and combinations.

He wobbled Penn in the first round with a left elbow near the fence but couldn't finish. In the second, it was body shots that hurt Penn, as he had him hunched over on two occasions. His strike selection was masterful as he turned the fight into target practice for the final few minutes.

According to FightMetric, he landed 116 significant strikes to just 24 landed by Penn.

Afterward, he stated his preference for his next fight.

"There's a guy who humiliated me a couple years ago and I want revenge," he said. "Carlos Condit, let's do it in March, my home territory. I want to get my revenge."

Condit beat MacDonald in June 2010, authoring a stunning TKO comeback win after MacDonald had captured the first two rounds. He hasn't lost since.

The win made it four straight for MacDonald, who is now 14-1.

Penn is now 16-9-2 after a fight that could prove to be his final time in the octagon.

Alexander Gustafsson beats Shogun Rua

Alexander Gustafsson made the leap to contender status on Saturday night, out-striking former champion Mauricio "Shogun"Rua en route to a unanimous decision win in the UFC on FOX 5 co-main event.

The judges scored it 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26 for the young Swede, although it wasn't quite as one-sided as the scores indicated.

Gustafsson certainly was the superior fighter on the night though. He floored Shogun in the early moments of the fight and never really let up, fighting a controlled fight throughout. His best punch was the uppercut, which he landed multiple times throughout the three-round affair, but he also showed good variety in his attack, scoring six takedowns, employing knees and at one point in the third, wobbling Rua with a front kick.

Rua, as always, showed an incredible chin and an unbending will, refusing to give in during any of the barrages that came his way.

Gustafsson too showed an excellent ability to absorb damage, as he fended off all of Rua's comeback attacks.

According to FightMetric, Gustafsson out-landed Rua 128-51 in the bout, notably turning it on in the third with a 53-11 advantage.

The win could set up Gustafsson with a title match against the winner of April's Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen bout. However, others like Glover Teixeira and Dan Henderson can also make a case for the slot.

Gustafsson has won six fights in a row, moving to 15-1 all-time.

Rua has alternated wins and losses in his last eight fights, dropping to 21-7.

Benson Henderson retains title with dominant win over Nate Diaz

In capturing the UFC lightweight championship and then defending the belt months later, Benson Henderson still could not convince all of the MMA world he was worthy of strapping the gold around his waist.

The doubters will be fewer after Saturday night, after Henderson punched, kicked and wrestled his way to a dominant decision win over Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC on FOX 5 from the Key Arena in Seattle.

The judges scored it in his favor 50-43, 50-45, 50-45.

Henderson authored nearly all of the fights best offensive moments.

In the first, he hurt Diaz with hammer fists and strikes from the top. In the second, he landed a hard head kick that rattled Diaz, then dropped him with a left hand after a series of jabs to the leg. Henderson hurt him in the third moments after Diaz gave him the middle finger, flooring with a right hook. In the fifth, he scooped Diaz up high and slammed him to the mat. In short, it was all Henderson.

According to FightMetric, Henderson landed 124 significant strikes to Diaz's 30. He also completed eight of 12 takedown tries and passed Diaz's guard three times.

Diaz had come into the fight on the best run of his UFC tenure, posting wins over divisional staples Jim MIller, Donald Cerrone and Takanori Gomi. All of those wins had been lopsided, leading many to believe he could upend Henderson.

But when it came time for the fight, his offense was stifled, mostly due to Henderson's ability to control distance through powerful leg kicks and occasional clinches. Diaz could never truly get his hands going, as he finished landing only 36 percent of his significant strikes.

Diaz had his best chances on the ground, at one point in the third threatening with a leg lock and then a toe hold, but Henderson was well prepared for the attacks and worked his way free. All night long, Henderson beat Diaz in the scramble positions, and by midway through the fight, it seemed clear the fight was trending his way.

Diaz left with cuts and bruises on his face while Henderson's face looked unmarked.

The champion is now 18-2 while Diaz is 16-8.

Scott Jorgensen a double bonus winner at UFC on FOX 5

Not only did Scott Jorgensen set a UFC/WEC bantamweight record by scoring his 10th victory in the division on Saturday, but he also picked up a pair of bonuses for his effort.

The veteran from Boise, Idaho scored a dramatic win over local favorite John Albert in the opening bout of UFC on FOX 5 at Seattle's KeyArena. Jorgensen escaped a deep triangle, then won the bout with a rear naked choke, as Albert tapped out a split second before the horn sounded to end the first round.

The UFC was impressed with Jorgensen's performance. They gave him $65,000 for Submission of the Night, then threw in another $65K for Fight of the Night, an award Albert will also pocket for the back-and-forth battle.

Veteran Yves Edwards cashed in as well on Saturday night. His vicious finish of Jeremy Stephens in the first round of their fight earned Edwards Knockout of the Night honors, for which he'll also take home $65,000.

Dana White wants B.J. Penn to retire

For 14 months, B.J. Penn was no longer a part of the world which he helped build, instead choosing a self-imposed exile to his homeland of Hawaii. He returned with thoughts of a future rich with success that would build upon his already established legacy. He left with more heartache. And headache. And ... well, you get the picture.

The former two-division champion was routed by Rory MacDonald at UFC on FOX 5, a beating so physically taxing that Penn had to be transported to a Seattle area hospital for observation, according to UFC officials. While he's expected to be OK, his fight career may not survive. If he was turned off to the idea of fighting by a lopsided loss to Nick Diaz in October 2011, his defeat by MacDonald can only serve to convince him his first instincts were correct.

Since Penn hasn't commented since the loss, that remains to be seen. As for UFC president Dana White, he's seen enough.

Following the event, White said during a FUEL TV interview that he wanted and expected to see Penn hang up his gloves for good.

"He didn't say it tonight but I think BJ is probably going to retire," White said. "I wouldn't mind seeing that. He came back with a fire lit under him. Let me tell you what: That kid looked so good tonight. Rory looked better than he ever looked. The body punches he threw, you dont see punches like that in mixed martial arts. He really put it to B.J. tonight.

"B.J. is a warrior," he continued. "Talk about a guy who doesn't give up, doesn't quit, and just keeps coming. I have so much respect for B.J. I always have, even though the good times and bad times. I‘d like to see him retire.

He’s got plenty of money, he's got a great family that loves him, he's got babies, a beautiful wife ... He has nothing left to prove to anybody, and everybody loves him. You heard the arena here tonight. I'd like to see B.J. retire.
Penn has only won once in his last six fights, a knockout win over Matt Hughes at UFC 123 in November 2010.

He holds a 16-9-2 record, which doesn't look great on paper, but 12 of his 27 career fights took place above his natural 155-pound weight class. Penn is one of only two men who've won titles in two UFC weight classes. The other is Hall of Famer Randy Couture. Penn is likely to earn the same honor, making the only question about his career whether or not he decides to give it one more go.

Wat zal de commissie hiervan zeggen? Lijkt mij illegaal.
