Ben Alloway KO's Manny Rodriguez in bizarre finish

In a bizarre finish, Manny Rodriguez was knocked out twice within a matter of seconds during his UFC on FX 6 fight with Ben Alloway. Well, sort of.

The weirdness began late in the first round, when Alloway threw a stinging low kick and Rodriguez crumpled to the mat.

Referee Steve Perceval ran in, and waved his arms, calling a halt to the action. That perked up Rodriguez, who lifted up his head and asked, "What do you mean?" saying that the kick landed below the belt.

Perceval could be heard saying he didn't see the kick land low, and was going to stop the action, calling it a TKO finish.

"I've called the fight," he said. But then, he thought better of it and went to cageside to discuss his decision with an official. He asked the cageside official if it looked like an illegal strike and was told it did. He then asked if he could restart the fight, and was told he could.

So the TKO was taken off the board.

Within 20 seconds, it was over anyway, as Alloway crushed Rodriguez (9-4) with a powerful front kick, and then landed a few ground strikes to finish him off.

The official time of the finish was 4:57.

"F'n sweet," Alloway said of the finish. The win improved him to 13-3.

"He's an unbelievable grappler," he said. "The plan was to keep it up. It didn't go to plan in the first couple of minutes, but I got it on the feet. Whatever works."

Joey Beltran back in win column by upsetting Igor Pokrajac

Joey Beltran came back to the UFC with a new body but the same old fighting spirit. After losing his return fight in July, the newly shaped light-heavyweight had his back against the wall at UFC on FX 6, but responded with one of his best octagon performances.

Battering Pokrajac on the inside for three rounds, Beltran pounded his way to a unanimous decision victory by a series of 30-27 scores.

Beltran continually moved forward during the fight, damaging Pokrajac from the clinch before occasionally switching levels and threatening with the takedown. His strategic shifts had Pokrajac struggling to figure things out, and he could never really get his offense going.

Much to his credit, Pokrajac did take plenty of rights, lefts and kicks along the way and did stay standing. According to FightMetric, he was out-struck by Beltran 206-63.

"He's like me, but from Croatia," a smiling Beltran said after the win.

Beltran had been winless in his last three UFC fights over two tenures with the company. The victory makes him 15-8 overall.

Pokrajac had come into the fight as a favorite of nearly 3-to-1 but looked flat despite coming off a loss in his last bout. The defeat dropped his record to 25-10.

Chad Mendes KO's Yaotzin Meza

Faced with the prospect of fighting a late-notice, little-known replacement, Chad Mendes could have been distracted or uninterested, but instead, he took care of business in short order, dispatching Yaotzin Meza with a blistering overhand right at 1:55 of the first round.

Mendes, who was originally supposed to face rising prospect Hacran Dias before the young Brazilian was knocked out by injury, perfectly timed his finisher, ducking out of the way of a lazy left hook and coming over the top with a power shot that sent Meza crashing to the mat.

Mendes added a few ground strikes for good measure, but the damage was done and the ref stepped in to halt the action.

The featherweight contender tipped his cap to Meza for taking the fight on short notice, but noted that his intensity was raised by what potentially lies beyond this particular fight.

"I'm going after that belt," he said. "I want that belt. I'm on my way, taking it one fight at a time, but I'm coming after it."

Mendes won for the second time since losing a title match to Jose Aldo in January, though neither of his opponents were anywhere near the top 10. He's now 13-1.

Meza was making his organizational debut, and had won seven of his last eight prior to the bout. The loss dropped his record to 19-8.

Hector Lombard crushes Rousimar Palhares, says he wants Michael Bisping

It was the fight everyone expected out of Hector Lombard when he arrived in the UFC, a masterpiece of violence that ended with his opponent splayed out on the mat. It came one fight later than he wanted, but it's a start.

Shaking off the lackluster performance of his July debut, Lombard fought with aggression from start to finish, crushing Rousimar Palhares in a first-round technical knockout.
The finish came at 3:38.

Palhares never really had a chance, as Lombard continually walked him down and Palhares mistakenly circled to his right, and into Lombard's power hand.

Prior to the finish, Lombard knocked Palhares down with a right hook and swarmed for the finish but Palhares was able to cover up and survive. Moments later, Lombard got free and with the fight back standing, he walked Palhares back to the cage and unloaded with a barrage. Palhares bent over, hurt by a left, and Lombard dropped him with a hook, then finished him with a series of ground strikes.

Afterward, he had ideas on his next match.

"I would like to do that to Michael Bisping," he said to a wild ovation.

Lombard is now 32-3-1 with 1 no contest, and back in the contender discussion.

In losing for the second straight time, Palhares dropped to 14-5.

Norman Parke beats Colin Fletcher in TUF: The Smashes lightweight final

Norman Parke, welcome to the UFC.

The Irish fighter, who competed on the UK vs. Australia edition of The Ultimate Fighter entitled "The Smashes," worked his way on to the roster by defeating Colin Fletcher via unanimous decision.

The fight, which was featured on the UFC on FX 6 main card, was scored his way 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Parke wasn't able to finish but came close on one occasion, nearly locking in a rear naked choke before Fletcher found an escape.

Fletcher fought gamely but wasn't able to sustain his offense enough to make an impact in the judges' minds.

Parke had gone through the tournament by defeating Richie Vaculik and Brendan Loughnane.

Officially, it was his seventh straight win as he improved his record to 17-2.

Fletcher fell to 8-2.

Parke fought a seasoned bout, mixing up his offense well. He was able to land combos from the outside, get in the clinch when he wanted to, and take the fight to the ground occasionally.

Robert Whittaker bests Brad Scott in TUF: Smashes welterweight final

It wasn't Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar, but it was close.
Fighting in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes, Robert Whittaker and Brad Scott went to battle, trading combinations and barrages for three rounds until time ran out on them.

Someone had to walk away with the UFC contract that is awarded to the winner, and it was Whittaker, earning a victory via unanimous decision by a trio of 29-28 scores.

"The contract is a bonus, but the real joy was defending my country and making everyone proud," said the Aussie.

Just 21 years old, Whittaker showed a mature presence, particularly in the third by taking over to ensure the victory after a close second.

He was the more powerful and accurate striker throughout. He knocked Scott down in the first and swarmed for the finish, but Scott covered up and survived the onslaught. He showed good durability throughout, at one point eating a head kick and shrugging it off.

In the second, Scott turned the tide with a takedown. He got Whittaker's back and looked to sink in a choke, but Whittaker was able to work free. That turned out to be Scott's best chance as Whittaker controlled the third, using a standing right elbow strike as his featured weapon.

Whittaker improved to 10-2, while Scott dropped to 8-2.

Ross Pearson knocks out George Sotiropoulos

After a brief drop to featherweight, Ross Pearson returned to where he came from, the 155-pound division, with a challenging match against former lightweight contender Georges Sotiropoulos. The bout had been long simmering, as the two coached against each other on the UK vs. Australia edition of The Ultimate Fighter, and grew a dislike for each other as a result.
Before the fight, Pearson said he would be fighting with anger for the first time, but when it came time to compete in the UFC on FX 6 main event, he fought with self-control, carefully choosing his spots in picking apart Sotiropoulos, chopping him down bit by bit en route to a TKO victory.

The finish came 41 seconds into the third round.

Pearson knocked Sotiropoulos down four times in the fight, at least once in each round. In the previous occasions, Sotiropoulos was able to force a clinch and give himself recovery time, but Pearson didn't also didn't blow his energy reserves trying to force the finish. He showed patience and just continued on methodically, taking complete control of the bout.

"It was just patience," he said afterward. "I knew when I wanted to land. I knew all along I just need to touch him."

Pearson established himself as the superior striker early on with a power right, a punch that left Sotiropoulos on wobbly legs. Pearson dropped him in the second with a left hook, and in the third, finished with a left hook/right hand combo. By that time, Sotiropoulos was bloodied, bruised, and just had enough.

Sotiropoulos did put a scare into the Brit in the last minute of the first round after scoring his only takedown in six tries. After that, he quickly got Pearson's back and worked to sink in the choke. Pearson denied him and got free, and that was really Sotiropoulos' last stand.

In winning his return to lightweight, Pearson improved to 14-6 while Sotiropoulos dropped his third straight and is now 14-5.

UFC on FX 6 bonuses: Prelim fighters sweep awards

By the third fight of the UFC on FX 6 card, the nightly bonuses were decided.
The prelim fighters swept the awards, as Nick Penner vs. Cody Donovan won Fight of the Night, while Ben Alloway took Knockout of the Night honors at the show, which took place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Queensland, Australia.

There was no submissions during the evening, although five of the 10 bouts were finished by KO or TKO.
The winners each received $40,000.

Alloway won for his finish, which came courtesy of a front kick that basically put opponent Manny Rodriguez's lights out. There was plenty of competition, including knockouts from main event fighter Ross Pearson and middleweight powerhouse Hector Lombard.

The Fight of the Night award was no easy decision either, as Pearson and Sotiropoulos put on an exciting bout, as did the co-main event fighters Robert Whittaker and Brad Scott.

The Penner-Donovan fight went less than one round, but was filled with momentum switches. Both men were knocked down at various points of the action-packed fight. Finally, near the end of the round, Donovan clipped Penner with a left that dropped him, and he finished with ground strikes.

(but then again... Wie niet?)

Ik vond hem van het begin al niet goed.

De reden dat hij vast hield in de guard is omdat hij de muziek in zijn hoofd even wilde laten zakken lijkt me. Lombard slaat hard.
