Although the date and venue haven't been announced, the fight card is taking shape for Invicta Fighting Championships' second event of 2013.

Invicta FC 5 is tentatively planned for April.

Two title fights and a big-name promotional debut will be part of the card, company president Shannon Knapp announced during this past weekend's Invicta FC 4 event.

Recently crowned champion Jessica Penne (10-1) puts her atomweight title on the line at the spring event. The California-based Bellator vet recently won the belt with a submission victory over Naho Sugiyama. Penne, whose only career loss came to Zoila Gurgel, will face an opponent to be announced.

In the night's other title fight, submission specialist Vanessa Porto (15-5), who recently beat veteran Tara LaRosa for her fifth win in five fights, takes on Barb Honchak (7-2), who recently topped Aisling Daly for her sixth straight win. The victor earn Invicta's inaugural flyweight title.

The event also will feature the promotional debut of former Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman (15-2), who fights for the first time since an unsuccessful bid to reclaim the 135-pound title from Ronda Rousey in August. No opponent has been determined for Kaufman, who was slated to fight Kaitlin Young at Invicta FC 3 before she was forced off the card with an injury.

Invicta FC 5 targeted for California, Penne vs. 'Karate Hottie'

After holding its first four events in Kansas City, Kan., Invicta FC is westward bound.

Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp today told MMAjunkie that Invicta FC 5 will be held in California, possibly at Bren Center in Irvine, Calif., with a targeted April fight date.

Additionally, previously announced participant Jessica Penne (10-1) now has an opponent. She'll put her newly won atomweight title on the line against "The Karate Hottie," Michelle Waterson (10-3).

While the title fight initially was targeted for April 13, Knapp said she'll look at other dates since the UFC will host the TUF 17 Finale on the same night.

"For those asking yes, the UFC just announced an April 13th date, so we will adjust that date we were looking at in April," she tweeted (https://twitter.com/shanknapp/status/289493193135882240). "Details coming!"

Broadcast plans for the event have not been finalized. Knapp did not rule out another partnership with Ustream despite a breakdown in the company's paywall system at Invicta FC 4, which resulted in refunds to all who paid $7.95 for the webcast.

In a bittersweet twist to the issue, Ustream's president told MMAjunkie.com Radio that record demand was responsible for the breakdown.

Knapp confirmed a previously reported fight between Vanessa Porto (15-5) and Barb Honchak (7-2) for the inaugural InvictaFC flyweight title.

Knapp said fans can also expect to see the return of promotional vets Bec Hyatt (4-2), Rose Namajunas (1-0) and Veronica Rothenhausler (1-0), as well as the promotional debut of ex-Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman (15-2).

Penne won the atomweight title with a second-round submission of Naho Sugiyama at Invicta FC 3. The Southern California-based fighter has won her past three bouts.

Waterson also appeared at Invicta FC 3, where she earned a split decision over Lacey Schuckman. It was her fourth consecutive win.

Sarah Kaufman vs. Leslie Smith, Kaitlin Young vs. Amanda Nunes added to Invicta FC 5

The upcoming Invicta FC 5 card continues to take shape with the announcement of two high-profile bantamweight bouts.

In the first, former Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman will take on Leslie Smith. The other will see Kaitlin Young face Amanda Nunes.

Kaufman had been penciled in to make her Invicta debut last October before injury kept her off the card. The 27-year-old hasn't competed since her championship loss to Ronda Rousey last August. She holds a career record of 15-2.

Smith is a product of the Cesar Gracie fight team with a 5-2 career record. She is 2-0-1 in three Invicta fights, fighting to a draw with Kaitlin Young in her debut before conquering her in the rematch with a second-round TKO. In her most recent fight, she earned a unanimous decision over Raquel Pennington.

Young (7-7-1) is a noted striker who had a rough 2012, going 1-2-1 with losses against Smith and Liz Carmouche. Her style should match up for a fan-friendly pairing with Nunes, another powerful striker with a 7-3 mark.

Although Invicta FC 5's date and location has not yet been made official, Knapp told MMA Fighting that the promotion is looking at April 5, which will sandwich it on a Friday between April 4's Bellator 95 and April 6's UFC on FUEL 9.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the targeted venue is the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, Missouri.

Knapp declined to comment on that, citing ongoing negotiations.

The event will be headlined by an atomweight title fight pitting Jessica Penne against Michelle Waterson.

Kaufman-Smith, Nunes-Young, Hyatt-Cive added to Invicta FC 5

The next Invicta card continues to take shape with the announcement of several fights, including another title bout.

Made official was Barb Honchak (7-2) vs. Vanessa Porto (15-5) for the promotion's 125-pound title; plus, former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman (15-2) takes on Leslie Smith (5-2-1); Amanda Nunes (7-3) will face Kaitlin Young (7-7); and Bec Hyatt (4-2) takes on Jasminka Cive (5-0). Invicta officials recently announced the four fights.

Invicta FC 5 takes place April 5, likely in Kansas City, Mo., and will be headlined by a 105-pound title fight between Jessica Penne and Michelle Waterson.

Kaufman will look to rebound from her August loss for the Strikeforce women's bantamweight title to champion Ronda Rousey, who now is in the UFC headlining a pay-per-view later this month in California. Before her loss to Rousey, Kaufman's only setback came when she lost her Strikeforce belt to Marloes Coenen in October 2010. Smith is 2-0-1 under the Invicta banner. After a draw with Young at Invicta FC 1, she stopped her with a second-round TKO in their rematch at Invicta FC 3. And at Invicta FC 4 this past month, she outpointed Raquel Pennington.

Nunes is looking to get back on track after losses in two of her past three fights. At Invicta FC 4, she was outpointed by D'Alelio. She beat Raquel Pa'aluhi at Invicta FC 2, but that came after seeing a six-fight win streak snapped with a TKO loss to Alexis Davis in Strikeforce. Young has dropped back-to-back fights after her draw with Smith. At Invicta FC 2, she was submitted by Carmouche in the second round. At Invicta FC 3, she was stopped by Smith in the rematch from their draw this past April. Her resume, however, includes wins over Miesha Tate and Julie Kedzie.

Hyatt made her Invicta debut this past month and lost a five-round unanimous decision title fight to Carla Esparza, who became the promotion's 125-pound champion with the win. The loss snapped a four-fight win streak for "Rowdy," a streak that included three stoppages. Cive brings her unbeaten record to the States from Austria, and she has all five of her wins by stoppage, including four knockouts.

Honchak has been on a tear since 2011, starting with a unanimous decision win over Felice Herrig for the Indiana-based Hoosier Fight Club promotion. Starting with that win, the Missouri-based fighter has won six straight, including back-to-back wins for Invicta. Along with Herrig, notable wins on her resume during the streak include Roxanne Madafferi and Aisling Daley. Porto has won five of her past six. Her lone loss in that stretch came to Sarah D'Alelio at Invicta FC 2. But she rebounded in October at Invicta FC 3 with a unanimous decision win over Tara LaRosa.

With the inclusions, the latest Invicta FC 5 card now includes:

Jessica Penne vs. Michelle Waterson - for 105-pound title
Barb Honchak vs. Vanessa Porto - for 125-pound title
Sarah Kaufman vs. Leslie Smith
Zoila Frausto Gurgel vs. Jennifer Maia
Amanda Nunes vs. Kaitlin Young
Julia Budd vs. Ediane Gomes
Jasminka Cive vs. Bec Hyatt
Alex Chambers vs. Jodie Esquibel
Mollie Estes vs. Veronica Rothenhausler
Lauren Barefoot vs. River Jones

Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos signs to fight Ediane Gomes at Invicta FC 5

Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (10-1) is headed to Invicta Fighting Championship.

The ex-Strikeforce champ's manager, Tito Ortiz, confirmed the move on Friday during a news conference at Punishment Training Center in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Santos' debut is set for Invicta FC 5, where she'll meet Ediane Gomes (10-2) on the main card of the April 5 event at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

Featherweight Gomes was previously linked to Julia Budd in a bout that was expected to crown a No. 1 contender in the promotion's 145-pound division. Budd will now face Fiona Muxlow (6-2), the promotion on Friday announced.

Santos' signing comes after a week of acrimony between Ortiz and UFC parent Zuffa, which held the rights to the fighter's services following the end of Strikeforce. Ortiz this past week relayed Santos' request to be released from her contract after an impasse with the company.

Santos, Ortiz said, wanted to fight bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey at a catchweight of 140 pounds after three bouts, while Zuffa wanted her to fight for Invicta and then return to the octagon for a fight with Rousey, which is widely regarded to be the most bankable women's matchup on the market.

This past week, Santos, who held the Strikeforce women's featherweight title before a positive steroid test stripped her of the belt, gave an interview to MMAjunkie in which she was optimistic about striking a deal with Zuffa.

"Without a doubt, if we make an agreement with the UFC, it wouldn't include an immediate title shot," Santos said earlier this week. "We would face someone else first. But nothing is set in stone.

"The only thing that's for sure is that I am willing to drop to 135. I've sought out a doctor that would assist me in that. I said I'm willing to drop to make this title fight happen. I think it would be a great fight that all the fans are waiting for."

But Ortiz later said Santos, could not make the 135-pound limit without endangering her health. On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White lashed out at the manager and fighter and indicated he had halted negotiations.

"'Cyborg' is pretty much irrelevant right now," he said. "Go out there and win some fights again, get your name back, stay clean, stay off steroids, get your career back on track and we'll talk. But for her to think that everyone should move around and jump through hoops for her is insane."

Santos hasn't fought since December 2011, when she earned a 16-second TKO over Hiroko Yamanaka. A post-fight drug test revealed the presence of the steroid stanozolol, which netted her a one-year suspension. She claimed a member of her training staff was responsible for the positive test, but was unsuccessful in appealing the punishment. Now she moves on to the all-women's Invicta promotion for what presumably is the next phase of her career. Ortiz at Friday's news conference, which was carried live on AXS TV, said he believes the fight with Rousey will one day happen. Until then, Santos is an Invicta fighter.

"We are thrilled to welcome Cris 'Cyborg,' arguably the top pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, to our rapidly growing roster of world-class athletes," Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp stated. "Cris' incredible performances in front of national TV audiences over the last few years have helped put women's MMA on the radar of the masses and paved the way for others to establish themselves in the sport."

Cristiane Santos meets replacement Fiona Muxlow at Invicta FC 5

With Ediane Gomez (10-2) injured and out of the fight, former Strikeforce champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (10-1) instead will fight Australian featherweight Fiona Muxlow (6-2) at next month's Invicta FC 5 event.

Invicta FC officials announced the change following confirmation of Gomez's withdrawal due to a shoulder injury.

Muxlow initially was slated to fight Julie Budd (4-2) on the card. Officials said Budd will get a new opponent.

Invicta FC 5 takes place April 5 at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. Santos vs. Muxlow is scheduled for the event's main card, which airs via online pay-per-view.

Santos, who signed with Invicta FC after failing to reach terms with the UFC, fights for the first time since December 2011, when the Brazilian earned a TKO win over Hiroko Yamanaka. However, the win was overturned when Santos failed a post-fight drug test (stanozolol). Santos recently concluded a yearlong drug suspension, and at Invicta FC 5, the 27-year-old looks for her 11th straight win.

Muxlow makes her promotional debut on the card. Most recently, she suffered a submission loss to former Strikeforce champ Marloes Coenen at DREAM.18. The defeat snapped a three-fight win streak for the 35-year-old Muxlow, who's earned stoppages in four of her six career wins.

Julia Budd replaces Veronica Rothenhausler, faces Mollie Estes at Invicta FC 5

Four-time Strikeforce veteran Julia Budd (4-2) is replacing an injured Veronica Rothenhausler and now faces Mollie Estes (1-1) at next month's "Invicta FC 5: Penne vs. Waterson" event.

Invicta FC officials today announced the change in the 145-pound matchup. The news first was reported by The MMA Corner.

Invicta FC 5 takes place April 5 at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. Santos vs. Muxlow is scheduled for the event's main card, which airs via online pay-per-view.

Budd was originally expected to face Fiona Muxlow on the card. However, Muxlow was pulled from the matchup and paired up with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, who lost her original opponent, Ediane Gomes, also due to injury. Canadian Budd now fights for the third time under the Invicta FC banner. Her first two outings netted first-round TKO wins over Danielle West and Elina Nilsson.

Meanwhile, Estes returns to action for the first time since Invicta's debut event in April 2012. The 37-year-old "Miss Mollie" was a big underdog in that appearance against Olympic wrestling medalist Rani Miller bought showed great durability and heart in taking the fight to the third frame before losing by TKO.

With the change, the Invicta FC 5 lineup now includes:

MAIN CARD

Champ Jessica Penne vs. Michelle Waterson - for atomweight title
Barb Honchak vs. Vanessa Porto - for inaugural flyweight title
Fiona Muxlow vs. Cristiane Santos
Sarah Kaufman vs. Leslie Smith

InvictaFC 5 april a.s. opgedragen aan Ramon Dekkers!

Marloes Coenen maakte zojuist via haar Facebook account (http://www.facebook.com/marloes.coenen) bekend dat de InvictaFC show van 5 april a.s. wordt opgedragen aan Ramon Dekkers die onlangs op 43-jarige leeftijd is overladen: "Shannon Knapp just told me that the InvictaFC event on April 5th is dedicated to the legacy of Ramon 'the diamond' Dekkers! How awesome is that?! And I'm front row in Kansas. :D" Ook in de Verenigde Staten is het overlijden van Dekkers dus niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Eerder berichten we al dat ook Mike Tyson zijn condoleance uitbracht via zijn Facebook account.

Tijdens het InvictaFC evenement staat onder meer de wellicht sterkste vrouwelijk MMA-vechtster ooit op het programma. Cris Cyborg zal het opnemen tegen Fiona Muxlow.
